New Delhi, India: Three Air India narrow-body aircraft sustained damage at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) after ground support equipment was blown across the apron during sudden strong winds and heavy rain on June 7, 2026. The incident occurred at Terminal 2, where the aircraft were parked on the ground when severe weather conditions struck the airport area. Powerful winds dislodged several pieces of ground support equipment from their designated positions, causing them to collide with the parked aircraft. No injuries were reported and no passengers were on board at the time. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. The damaged aircraft were Air India single-aisle aircraft parked at Terminal 2 when the storm hit. The affected aircraft have been withdrawn from service for inspections and repairs. One aircraft is expected to remain grounded for several days, while the other two could return to operations later this week following technical assessments and necessary repairs. At least three pieces of ground support equipment were involved. These included a passenger step ladder and a trestle that were reportedly positioned near the aircraft stands before the weather deteriorated. The equipment was hurled from its location after strong winds swept across the apron area. Video footage that surfaced online showed a passenger boarding staircase belonging to IndiGo moving uncontrollably across the apron before striking a parked Air India aircraft. The footage quickly circulated on social media and raised questions regarding the securing of movable airport equipment during adverse weather conditions. While it is confirmed that three aircraft were damaged, authorities have not disclosed the registrations of the aircraft or specified which sections of each aircraft were struck. As of June 8, neither Air India nor airport authorities have publicly identified whether the damage occurred to the fuselage, wings, tail, nose section, engines or other structures. Technical inspections are underway to determine the full extent of the damage. The sudden storm brought strong winds and heavy rain to the airport area, creating hazardous ramp conditions within a short period. Following the incident, the damaged aircraft were removed from operational service and subjected to engineering inspections. A probe has been initiated to establish the sequence of events, assess weather-related factors and review ground handling procedures for securing equipment during sudden adverse weather.

Delhi, India: An Air India Boeing 777-300ER operating flight AI173 from Delhi to San Francisco was forced to return to Delhi after suffering a technical malfunction mid-flight, remaining airborne for more than eight hours before landing safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport. The incident occurred on May 27 and involved approximately 230 passengers onboard the long-haul flight bound for the United States. According to airline officials and flight-tracking data, the aircraft had already spent over three hours in the air and entered Chinese airspace when the crew decided to discontinue the journey and return to Delhi in accordance with safety procedures. Initial reports stated that the issue involved the aircraft’s Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), a critical airborne safety system designed to prevent mid-air collisions by enabling aircraft to electronically detect and communicate with nearby traffic. The system operates independently of ground-based air traffic control and is considered mandatory for certain long-haul international operations, including trans-Pacific and North Atlantic routes. While Air India did not officially disclose the exact nature of the malfunction in its initial public statement, it is suspected that the aircraft experienced problems linked to the TCAS equipment during the flight. Some aviation reports and social media aviation monitoring pages further claimed that both TCAS channels onboard the aircraft became unavailable, though the airline has not publicly confirmed those specific details. Flight-tracking platforms showed the Boeing 777-300ER reversing course while over Chinese airspace before commencing the lengthy return sector to Delhi. Due to the aircraft’s weight, fuel load, and operational requirements for a safe landing, the jet remained airborne for several additional hours before touchdown. Air India confirmed that the aircraft landed safely and would undergo a detailed technical inspection in line with the carrier’s maintenance and safety protocols. The airline also stated that alternative arrangements were made for affected passengers, including hotel accommodation, refreshments, rebooking support, and rescheduling options. “The aircraft landed safely and will undergo technical inspection in line with Air India’s safety standards,” the airline said in its statement while expressing regret over the inconvenience caused to passengers. No injuries were reported during the incident, and passengers were safely deboarded after the aircraft’s arrival back in Delhi.

Muscat, Oman: An Air India Express Boeing 737-800 operating flight IX712 from Muscat to Kannur suffered significant damage during a nighttime takeoff attempt at Muscat International Airport on May 15 after the aircraft reportedly lined up with runway edge lights instead of the runway centreline, triggering a high-speed rejected takeoff and a formal accident investigation by Omani authorities. The incident came to public attention nearly nine days later, on May 24, after regulatory sources in Oman confirmed details of the occurrence. The 18-year-old Boeing 737-800 had been preparing to depart Muscat for the approximately three-hour service to Kannur on the night of May 15. During lineup for departure from Runway 26L, the aircraft allegedly tracked the right-hand runway edge lights rather than positioning itself on the runway centreline. As the aircraft accelerated for takeoff at approximately 9:10 pm local time after entering the runway via taxiway E7, the Boeing 737 struck multiple runway edge lights, destroying several of them during the takeoff roll. Flight crew reportedly aborted the takeoff after hearing a loud bang and receiving cockpit warnings. The aircraft sustained substantial damage during the incident. Reports stated that the nose landing gear was damaged, at least one tyre deflated, and hydraulic system leaks were observed after the rejected takeoff. Aviation sources also indicated that debris from shattered runway lights may have been ingested into the engines, potentially causing additional engine damage. The aircraft became disabled on the runway following the rejected takeoff, forcing passengers and crew to disembark directly onto the runway surface while emergency teams responded. However, authorities have not officially confirmed all operational details surrounding the evacuation sequence. The aircraft has reportedly remained grounded in Muscat since the incident while technical inspections and investigative work continue. Oman’s Air Accidents Investigation Sector (AAIS) has classified the occurrence as an “accident” rather than a minor incident, underlining the seriousness of the event. Investigators are now examining cockpit procedures, runway lighting conditions, pilot situational awareness, airport surface markings, and other operational factors that may have contributed to the alignment error during nighttime operations.

Bangalore, India: An Air India Airbus A321 operating flight AI2651 from Delhi to Bengaluru suffered a tail-strike incident while landing at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport on Thursday morning, prompting the airline to ground the aircraft for detailed technical inspections. The incident occurred during the landing phase of the domestic service arriving from Delhi. According to airline officials and multiple media reports, the aircraft landed safely and all passengers and crew members disembarked normally without injuries. The aircraft encountered wake turbulence while approaching the runway at Bengaluru airport. The turbulence was reportedly generated by a departing wide-body aircraft operating nearby at the time of the approach. As the Airbus A321 approached for landing, the pilots initiated a precautionary go-around manoeuvre after experiencing unstable conditions caused by the wake turbulence. During the manoeuvre, the aircraft’s rear lower fuselage reportedly made contact with the runway, resulting in the tail strike. Air India confirmed the occurrence in an official statement, saying the aircraft “experienced a tail-strike during landing.” The airline added that the aircraft has since been withdrawn from service for comprehensive inspections and engineering assessments. The aircraft involved was a narrow-body Airbus A321 operating the Delhi–Bengaluru sector as AI2651. Flight-tracking data also identified the aircraft as an Airbus A321neo variant typically deployed on high-density domestic routes. The aircraft was carrying 181 people, including crew members onboard during the incident. Following the incident, Air India cancelled the return Bengaluru–Delhi service AI2652. The airline stated that alternative travel arrangements were being made for affected passengers while ground staff in Bengaluru were assisting travellers with rebooking and support services. The airline further said the incident would be investigated in coordination with relevant aviation regulatory authorities and under established operational safety procedures.

Chennai, India: A passenger onboard an Air Arabia flight arriving from Sharjah caused a major security disruption at Chennai International Airport after allegedly opening an emergency exit door while the aircraft was taxiing after landing on Sunday morning. The incident involved Air Arabia flight G9 471 (Airbus A320) which landed in Chennai carrying approximately 231 passengers. According to airport and security officials, the aircraft had safely touched down and was moving along the taxiway towards the terminal when the disruption occurred. As the aircraft proceeded along the taxiway, a 34-year-old male passenger from Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu, reportedly opened one of the emergency exit doors without authorization. In some reports, it is also stated that the passenger exited the aircraft after opening the door, triggering immediate alarm among crew and ground authorities. The pilot responded instantly by bringing the aircraft to a halt and alerting Air Traffic Control and airport security agencies. The action resulted in a temporary suspension of operations on the taxiway and main runway. Personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), along with airport security and police teams, rushed to the aircraft. The passenger was quickly restrained and taken into custody for questioning. Officials confirmed that he was later handed over to local police for further investigation. Authorities are also assessing the passenger’s mental condition and behaviour prior to the incident, with preliminary reports suggesting he may have been unwell during the flight. The passenger had complained of discomfort onboard and had experienced vomiting during the journey, though this is part of ongoing verification. Following the incident, Chennai Airport authorities temporarily shut the main runway and taxi operations for security checks and inspection of the aircraft, especially due to the emergency exit deployment. The affected aircraft was later towed to a parking bay after inspection. Authorities confirmed that no passengers or crew members were injured, no structural damage to the aircraft was reported and the situation was contained quickly by security teams. The pilot has filed a formal complaint, and aviation security officials are investigating. Airport authorities have stated that normal operations resumed shortly after the incident and security protocols remain under review.

San Francisco, United States: An Air India co-pilot was denied entry into the United States and deported back to India after allegedly being found in possession of marijuana upon arrival in San Francisco, triggering internal and regulatory investigations. The pilot was travelling from Delhi to San Francisco on Tuesday as a “deadheading” crew member, a standard aviation practice where flight crew travel as passengers to position themselves for operational duty. The co-pilot was scheduled to operate a subsequent return flight from San Francisco to India, reportedly to Kolkata, but was unable to do so following the incident. Upon arrival at San Francisco International Airport, US authorities allegedly discovered marijuana in the pilot’s baggage during routine inspection procedures. Following the discovery, the pilot was deemed “inadmissible” under US laws and was not permitted to enter the country. He was subsequently sent back to India on the next available flight without being allowed to leave the airport premises. Air India confirmed the development in an official statement, saying, “One of our crew members travelling from Delhi to San Francisco on April 14, for positioning to operate a subsequent flight, was found to be inadmissible as per local laws and has been sent back to India.” The airline has since derostered the pilot and initiated an internal investigation into the matter. Reiterating its stance, Air India stated that it maintains zero tolerance for legal violations and will take “appropriate strict disciplinary action” in accordance with company policies. The incident has also been reported to India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which is expected to examine the case under existing safety and conduct regulations. While the full extent of regulatory action remains unclear, the case typically invites scrutiny under strict aviation norms governing substance possession and professional conduct.

Pune, India: Flight operations at Pune Airport were temporarily suspended late Friday night after an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft was involved in a hard landing incident that rendered the runway unusable for several hours, before authorities restored operations early Saturday morning following emergency repair work. The disruption began at approximately 10:25-11:00 PM on April 17, when an IAF fighter aircraft experienced a “hard landing” during arrival. A senior IAF officer said the exact cause of the incident would be established only after a formal court of inquiry. Given Pune Airport operates a single runway under a dual civil-military use model, the incident resulted in an immediate and complete suspension of both arrivals and departures. As per the Airport Director, IndiGo cancelled 31 arrivals and 34 departures, while Air India cancelled three arrivals and three departures. SpiceJet called off two arrivals and three departures, and Akasa Air cancelled two arrivals and three departures. Air India Express also reported five arrivals and five departures being cancelled. Authorities have not officially disclosed the exact aircraft type involved in the incident. However, it has been consistently identified as an IAF fighter aircraft across reports. The aircrew onboard were confirmed safe, with no injuries reported. Officials also confirmed that there was no damage to civilian property or airport infrastructure beyond the runway obstruction. The runway was declared temporarily unavailable late Friday night. All take-offs and landings were halted, affecting numerous scheduled night flights. Airlines were alerted, and multiple flights were cancelled, delayed, or diverted due to the closure. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol confirmed the disruption and estimated that runway restoration would take around five hours. The Indian Air Force, in its official communication, stated, “Pune runway is temporarily unavailable due to an incident involving an IAF aircraft. The aircrew are safe and there is no damage to civil property. Efforts are underway to operationalise the runway and resume normal operations at the earliest.” Minister Mohol added, “Thankfully, the aircrew are safe and there has been no damage to civil property… it may take approximately 5 hours to restore normal runway operations.” Following the incident, airport authorities and the IAF initiated rapid recovery and inspection work “on a war footing” to clear the runway and ensure safety compliance. Authorities confirmed that all necessary safety checks were completed before reopening the airport to commercial traffic. Officials have not released a confirmed cause, and a detailed investigation is underway.
