Chennai, India: An Air India flight Airbus 320 operating from Colombo to Chennai was forced to undergo a post-landing inspection on Tuesday after a suspected bird strike during its approach. The Airbus aircraft, carrying 158 passengers, landed safely at Chennai International Airport with no reported injuries. The incident occurred as the aircraft was on its final approach to runway touchdown in Chennai. Although the pilots reported no abnormalities in-flight, maintenance teams later discovered signs of impact damage believed to be from a bird strike. The airline subsequently cancelled the return leg to Colombo as a precautionary measure. Following standard safety procedures, Air India arranged an alternate aircraft to fly 137 passengers to Colombo later the same day. Engineers conducted detailed inspections on the affected aircraft after it was grounded for further assessment. A senior airline official told The New Indian Express that a visible mark was found on one of the engine blades during a detailed post-flight examination. “While there were no indications of mechanical issues during the flight, a precautionary inspection was initiated after landing. The aircraft has been withdrawn from service pending a thorough technical evaluation,” the official said. Initial checks in Colombo had reportedly found no visible damage, and the aircraft had been cleared for its scheduled return to India. However, after arrival in Chennai, maintenance teams noticed the engine impact and immediately grounded the plane for safety verification. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident to determine the sequence of events and assess the inspection process that initially cleared the aircraft in Colombo. Air India, in a statement, said that passenger safety remains its top priority and that it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

Mumbai, India: The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has issued its preliminary report on July 21, 2025 runway excursion involving an Air India Airbus A320-neo at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, offering the first official account of what caused the aircraft to veer off course upon landing. According to the report, Air India flight AI 2744 was operating from Kochi to Mumbai with 182 people on board including two pilots and five cabin crew when it touched down during heavy rainfall but failed to stay on the runway centerline. Investigators said the aircraft’s right-hand main wheels and nose gear entered the grassy area adjacent to the runway before the crew was able to steer it back onto the paved surface. Despite the excursion, the aircraft maintained control and continued taxiing under its own power to parking bay K5L, where passengers disembarked safely. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew. The AAIB report detailed significant damage to the aircraft’s undercarriage and engine cowling. Three main tyres numbers 2, 3, and 4 were found deflated with cut marks, likely caused by contact with uneven ground. The right engine fan cowl showed cuts on both sides, while investigators also noted grass ingestion in both main landing gear assemblies and the nose landing gear. The report highlights adverse weather conditions as a contributing factor. Mumbai was experiencing intense monsoon rainfall at the time of landing, which likely reduced runway friction. Airport officials briefly suspended operations following the incident to conduct runway inspections, after which flight movements resumed. Air India deployed maintenance teams to tow the aircraft to its hangar for detailed inspection and repairs. The final investigation report is yet to be released.

The affected flight, Delta Flight 1830, was scheduled to depart for Guatemala City when the collision occurred. According to eyewitness reports and official statements, the Boeing 757 was moving backward away from the gate under the guidance of ground crew when the wing made contact with a parked, unoccupied regional jet. The exact sequence of events is currently under review. Following the collision, Delta promptly disembarked passengers from the damaged aircraft and arranged for their transfer to a replacement plane. The subsequent flight departed later the same afternoon, arriving at its destination over three hours behind schedule. The FAA will examine factors such as ground operations protocols, communication procedures, pilot and ground crew actions, and any systemic issues that may have played a role. Delta and airport authorities have stated their full cooperation with the FAA’s ongoing investigation and underscored their priority on maintaining the highest safety standards. No additional safety concerns or hazards have been reported in relation to the aircraft or airport operations following the event.
