Amsterdam, Netherlands: Amsterdam Schiphol Airport saw a sharp reduction in flight cancellations for Thursday as the prolonged winter storm that crippled Europe’s busiest hub for air travel showed signs of easing, though delay risks remain and residual disruption persists. Airlines and airport officials reported only a small number of scheduled flights affected for 8 January, marking a significant improvement from the previous days of winter chaos that saw hundreds of flights scrapped daily. Officials from Schiphol and Dutch flag carrier KLM Royal Dutch Airlines confirmed that around 60 inbound services scheduled for Thursday had been cancelled by late Wednesday afternoon, largely due to aircraft being unable to return after cancellations earlier in the week. Only a handful of departing flights have been removed from the Thursday schedule. In total, six departures out of 565 scheduled Thursday flights were cancelled by various carriers, and approximately 30 incoming flights were expected to experience delays of varying durations. A spokesperson for Schiphol emphasised that weather conditions were expected to be milder than earlier in the week, and that airlines “do not expect as many cancellations as in recent days”. However, passengers were urged to plan for delays and to check flight status before arriving at the airport. The airport’s operational challenges began on 2 January 2026, when persistent snowfall, strong winds and freezing conditions first caused widespread cancellations. Over the following days, airlines cancelled around 3,500 scheduled flights at Schiphol on average hundreds per day as snow and ice compounded staffing and logistical issues. On 7 January, more than 700 flights were cancelled, again due to heavy snow and high wind, leaving long lines of stranded passengers and disrupted connections across Europe. A major factor behind the cancellation surge was the strain on de‑icing operations. KLM, responsible for most de‑icing services at Schiphol, reported that its supplies of glycol‑based de‑icing fluid were running critically low after days of continuous usage, prompting emergency procurement efforts from suppliers in Germany. Airport ground crews worked around the clock to clear runways and taxiways, but continuous snowfall and freezing precipitation created persistent bottlenecks that reduced the airport’s capacity to handle arriving and departing flights. Travelers faced lengthy delays and cancellations through the week, with many spending nights in airport terminals. Schiphol staff provided cots, blankets, food and beverages for those unable to depart. Although Thursday’s forecast suggests fewer cancellations than earlier in the week, weather warnings including Code Yellow alerts for freezing rain and sleet remained in place for the Netherlands, raising the possibility of renewed disruption, particularly if conditions deteriorate over the coming days.

Birmingham, United Kingdom: A Ryanair Boeing 737‑8 MAX operating flight FR1121 from Birmingham Airport (BHX) to Tenerife South Airport (TFS) was forced to declare an emergency and return to the UK on 28 December 2025 after encountering severe turbulence that resulted in injuries to several passengers mid‑flight. The aircraft, registered EI‑HGO, departed Birmingham at approximately 14:50 GMT, climbing to a cruising altitude of around 35,000 feet over French airspace near Brest, when it suddenly encountered unexpected and intense turbulence. According to passenger reports and aviation tracking data, cabin service was in progress at the time, with service trolleys in the aisle, which likely contributed to the number and severity of injuries on board. In response to the turbulence and injuries sustained, the flight crew declared a general emergency, squawking transponder code 7700, signalling a critical situation to air traffic control. The aircraft then executed a turnaround and descent, initially descending rapidly from cruise before stabilising at around 10,000 feet during the return flight. The flight made a safe landing back at Birmingham Airport approximately 92 minutes after departure. Emergency services, including paramedics, were stationed at a remote stand to provide immediate medical assistance to passengers affected by the turbulence. A Ryanair spokesperson later confirmed that the aircraft “landed normally” and that a small number of passengers received medical attention on the ground. The airline also stated that FR1121 continued its scheduled flight to Tenerife later that evening after the situation was resolved. Details on the exact number and extent of injuries have not been fully disclosed by Ryanair or medical authorities. Eyewitness accounts collected by aviation reporting services indicate that the turbulence was sudden and significant, causing unsecured passengers and objects to be thrown about the cabin. Severe turbulence, especially at cruising altitude, can occur in clear air without obvious visual warning signs, often related to atmospheric phenomena such as jet streams or weather fronts.

London, United Kingdom: Thousands of passengers across Europe faced significant travel disruptions during the peak holiday travel period as nearly 1,000 flights were delayed and 20 cancelled at major airports, including hubs in France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Turkey, Norway, Italy, and Germany. Airlines such as Lufthansa, Air France, easyJet, KLM, and Turkish Airlines reported delays affecting both domestic and international services, disrupting schedules during the peak holiday travel period. Authorities and airline operators cited a combination of adverse winter weather, increased holiday traffic, and air traffic control constraints as key factors behind the widespread disruption. Meteorological services reported snow, fog, and high winds across northern and western Europe, which forced delays and limited airport capacity. The most affected airports included: Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG): 226 delayed flights, 6 cancellations London Heathrow (LHR): 96 delayed flights, 8 cancellations Istanbul Airport (IST): 200 delays, 3 cancellations Madrid Barajas (MAD): 99 delayed flights, no cancellations Rome Fiumicino (FCO): 84 delays, 2 cancellations Additional disruptions were reported in Munich, Oslo, Barcelona, and Manchester, where delays caused knock-on effects on connecting flights and ground transport. While outright flight cancellations remained comparatively low, delays affected airline rotations, crew schedules, and passenger connections. Affected travelers faced missed connections, long waiting times, and last-minute rebooking. A spokesperson for one major carrier noted: “We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers. Operations are being prioritized based on safety, and rebooking assistance is being provided at affected airports.” In addition to adverse winter weather and heavy passenger traffic, strike action by airport ground staff and airline cabin crews further exacerbated delays. Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) cabin crew walkouts at hubs like Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo, along with ground handling strikes in Spain and Portugal, contributed to longer check-in times, baggage delays, and operational bottlenecks. These industrial actions, combined with congested airspace and winter storms, created widespread disruption for passengers during one of Europe’s busiest travel periods. Europe’s aviation network has seen recurring disruptions throughout 2025, particularly during winter. Earlier reports indicated that nearly 4,000 flights were delayed and over 200 cancelled during December due to similar weather and traffic pressures. Analysts note that increased passenger demand post-pandemic and constrained air traffic control resources have created systemic vulnerabilities in the European flight network. Passengers affected by delays or cancellations in Europe may be entitled to compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004, except in cases caused by severe weather or air traffic control restrictions. Travelers are advised to check flight status regularly via airline apps or airport information screens, arrive at airports earlier than usual to accommodate potential delays, keep airline contact information handy for rebooking or compensation claims. Industry experts warn that air travel disruptions are likely to continue through the remainder of the holiday season, with weather volatility and high passenger volumes placing additional strain on airport operations and flight schedules. Travelers are advised to plan for potential delays and maintain flexibility in their travel plans.

Istanbul, Turkey: A scheduled flight from Pristina to Istanbul ended in a runway excursion late on December 7 as a Anadolujet (AJet) Boeing 737-800 veered off the newly-opened runway at Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW). The incident has forced closure of runway 06R/24L and triggered widespread flight delays and cancellations across one of Turkey’s busiest air hubs. Flight VF102 registration TC-JZN touched down on runway 24L just before 18:00 local time. According to Initial reports, the aircraft slowed but, while attempting a high-speed turnoff via taxiway A6 roughly 1,850 metres down the runway, failed to make the turn. The plane skidded off the paved surface onto soft ground adjacent to the runway, coming to a halt within the runway protected area. Despite the dramatic nature of the event, all passengers and crew on board were evacuated safely using external stairs and emergency slides were not deployed. There have been no reports of injuries. According to the airline and official statements from the embassy of Kosovo in Turkey, the aircraft’s deviation was not due to a mechanical failure or pilot error, but was triggered by wet and soft terrain following heavy rainfall in the area. Investigators have reportedly launched a probe to verify whether runway surface conditions played a decisive role. The incident forced an immediate closure of runway 06R/24L to allow for safe removal of the aircraft and inspection of the runway and taxiway infrastructure. Aviation authorities recorded flight delays. Flights operated by several major carriers including Turkish Airlines, as well as regional and international airlines were among those severely disrupted. For many passengers, plans for onward travel or hotel reservations in Istanbul and other destinations have been upended. Airport management crews have commenced full inspection of runway and taxiway surfaces, drainage systems, and runway safety features before reopening. Meanwhile, regulatory bodies have signaled that a broader review of weather-related landing protocols and runway maintenance procedures may follow.

Kuwait City, Kuwait: A Kuwait Airways flight bound for Manila was delayed early Friday morning after the aircraft encountered a minor technical malfunction while taxiing for departure at Kuwait International Airport (KWI), authorities confirmed. The incident involved Kuwait Airways Flight KU417, a scheduled service from Kuwait City to Manila. The aircraft suffered a braking system malfunction shortly before takeoff. The fault reportedly caused a brief halt in aircraft movement on the taxiway but did not lead to any injuries or fire onboard. “The situation was brought under control quickly, and no injuries were reported among passengers or crew,” Kuwait’s Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) said in an official statement. “The technical teams carried out immediate safety checks, and the aircraft was secured in accordance with international aviation protocols.” Airport ground crews, fire services, and airline maintenance teams responded promptly to the alert. The aircraft, which had 284 passengers onboard, was towed back to the gate area for inspection. Passengers were deboarded safely and provided refreshments while Kuwait Airways arranged an alternate aircraft to operate the route. A replacement aircraft later departed Kuwait for Manila around 12:20 p.m. local time, several hours after the initial schedule. The airline confirmed that no flight operations or other services at the airport were affected by the incident. The Public Authority for Civil Aviation – Kuwait (PACA) has initiated a standard investigation to determine the cause of the malfunction. Preliminary findings suggest a mechanical issue in the braking system, but officials emphasized that it posed no threat to flight safety. PACA reaffirmed that all safety procedures were executed without delay, adding that the aircraft’s crew followed prescribed emergency checklists effectively. “Passenger safety is our foremost priority. Incidents of this nature are handled in accordance with international standards and in coordination with Kuwait Airways’ engineering division,” the authority said. Kuwait Airways stated that its engineering and safety teams are carrying out detailed inspections on the affected aircraft before returning it to service. The airline added that passengers who missed connecting flights were rebooked and assisted at Kuwait International Airport’s customer service desk. Operations across Kuwait Airways’ regional network reportedly continued without disruption. Aviation tracking services showed regular departures from KWI through the day. The aircraft involved remains grounded pending engineering clearance and PACA certification. No further issues or related incidents have been reported.
