New Delhi, India: In the ongoing investigation into the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171 earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal has reported that the aircraft’s emergency power system, a Ram Air Turbine (RAT) was deployed shortly after takeoff, indicating a serious failure onboard. Meanwhile, India’s aviation regulator has completed a thorough inspection of Air India’s Boeing 787 fleet, and flight operations continue to be impacted by a combination of post-crash safety protocols and escalating global tensions. According to a detailed report by The Wall Street Journal, the RAT, an emergency device that supplies backup electrical and hydraulic power was automatically activated soon after the aircraft departed from Ahmedabad. This system typically deploys in the event of a dual engine failure or a complete loss of electrical/hydraulic systems, highlighting the severity of the malfunction that likely occurred minutes into the flight. The revelation aligns with preliminary flight data and technical assessments being examined by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) of India, supported by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), Boeing, and GE Aerospace. Both the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR) have been recovered and are currently under analysis. Authorities have emphasized that while the RAT deployment is a significant lead, the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation. A final report is expected within 12 months, with interim findings anticipated in the coming weeks. Fleet-Wide Inspections Completed; No Major Faults Detected In response to the crash, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ordered comprehensive inspections of Air India’s entire fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners. As of June 18, the DGCA confirmed that all inspections have been completed and no major safety concerns were found. The regulator reviewed over 30 aircraft, focusing on engine performance data, recent maintenance logs, flight control systems, and emergency power units. Minor issues identified during the checks were resolved immediately, and the fleet has been cleared for regular operations. Air India’s Boeing 777 aircraft were also subjected to additional checks as a precautionary measure, and similar clearances have now been granted. Flight Cancellations Linked to Post-Crash Measures and War Tensions Despite the clearance, Air India has voluntarily reduced international widebody operations by 15% through mid-July. This reduction is attributed to the temporary unavailability of select aircraft during inspections and maintenance adjustments. Additionally, the airline has faced widespread flight cancellations and delays due to rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and regional airspace restrictions. Conflict-related curfews and route adjustments have impacted operations across long-haul destinations including London, Paris, Toronto, Vienna, and Dubai. In the past week alone, over 80 widebody flights have been either cancelled or rescheduled, affecting both Indian and overseas passengers. Air India has assured travelers of full refunds, free rebooking, and alternate routing where available. The airline is also operating Friends and Relatives Assistance Centres at major hubs to support families of victims and assist disrupted passengers. Regulatory Oversight Continues Amid Global Collaboration The Indian aviation regulator continues to coordinate closely with international investigative bodies. Boeing and GE have provided technical support in both the investigation and post-incident diagnostics. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has also been notified and is monitoring developments. Authorities reiterated that while early indicators suggest a rare systems failure, there is no evidence of a design flaw affecting the Dreamliner series as a whole.
