Mumbai, India: On October 8, 2025, the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) was inaugurated, marking a significant milestone in India’s aviation sector. Built at a cost of around Rs 19,650 crore under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by the Adani Group, the airport is expected to ease congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and enhance the city’s position as a global aviation hub. Phase 1 of NMIA features Terminal 1 and Runway 1, equipped with 10 bus gates and 29 aero bridges. The facility is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually, with plans to expand capacity to 90 million in future phases. Its lotus-inspired architecture includes 12 sculptural columns resembling petals and 17 mega columns supporting the roof, reflecting India’s cultural heritage. Situated in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, about 37 kilometers from South Mumbai, NMIA is integrated with multimodal transport options, including metro, roadways, and public transport systems, ensuring seamless connectivity. The airport also hosts India’s largest aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities, positioning it as a major cargo and logistics hub. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the inauguration ceremony, alongside Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, highlighting the national importance of the project. Chief Minister Fadnavis announced that the first ticket issued from the airport would bear the name of the late D.B. Patil, a prominent farmer leader and legislator. Commercial operations are scheduled to begin in December 2025. NMIA’s advanced facilities, strategic location, and integration with multimodal transport networks are set to transform Mumbai’s aviation landscape. In addition, the 'Mumbai One' app was launched to enhance urban mobility. The platform integrates services from 11 public transport operators across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, allowing seamless travel on trains, metros, buses, monorails, and Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT), which serves around 200,000 passengers daily.

New Delhi, India: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a fine of ₹20 lakh on IndiGo, India’s largest airline, for alleged lapses in its pilot training programme. The regulator found that the airline had used unqualified flight simulators to train pilots operating flights to Category C aerodromes, which are considered challenging due to terrain and approach conditions. According to the filing, the alleged non-compliance relates to the airline’s “failure to use qualified simulators for pilot training at Category C aerodromes.” These airports include Calicut, Mangaluru, Srinagar, Port Blair, Leh, Aizawl, Shimla, and international locations such as Kabul and Kathmandu. Aviation experts said that Category C airports require pilots to undergo specific simulator training replicating the topography and terrain of those airfields. “A qualified simulator must realistically depict the local geography, altitude, and approach pattern. Using a generic simulator can affect pilot readiness for critical airports like Leh or Calicut,” said Captain Anil S. Rao, President of the All India Pilots Association, in comments to The New Indian Express. In its statement, IndiGo said the fine would have no material impact on its operations and that it would contest the DGCA order before the appropriate appellate authority. “We remain committed to maintaining the highest training standards and operational safety,” the airline said. The DGCA’s order, dated September 26, 2025, stated that IndiGo failed to comply with simulator certification standards while conducting recurrent training for pilots assigned to operate at high-risk airports. The penalty was disclosed by IndiGo’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, in its filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The DGCA had earlier issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo on August 11, 2025, for using unapproved Airbus A320 Full Flight Simulators in pilot training. These simulators were reportedly used for critical training functions such as type rating, recurrent training, and proficiency checks without securing the necessary regulatory approval. The DGCA gave IndiGo seven days to respond, warning that failure to do so could have led to enforcement actions, including potential suspension of related training approvals. IndiGo acknowledged the notice and temporarily withdrew the identified simulators pending regulatory clearance. The airline cooperated with the DGCA to ensure all training devices met the required standards.

The move comes after a safety review following growing concerns over lithium-ion battery incidents in aviation. The airline has outlined specific guidelines to ensure compliance and passenger safety: Prohibited Usage: Passengers are not allowed to use any power bank to charge devices during flights. Carry-On Allowance: Travelers may carry one power bank per person with a capacity under 100 watt-hours (Wh). Charging Restrictions: Power banks cannot be recharged using aircraft power outlets. Storage Guidelines: Power banks must be stored in the seat pocket or under the seat, and are not permitted in overhead compartments. Checked Baggage: Power banks remain strictly prohibited in checked luggage. Emirates confirmed that in-seat charging ports remain available on all aircraft. Passengers are advised to fully charge their devices prior to departure, especially on long-haul flights. Lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in power banks, have been linked to thermal runaway incidents, where batteries can overheat or catch fire if damaged, overcharged, or improperly handled. Although such events are rare, Emirates cited passenger safety as the primary reason for the new restriction. Emirates’ decision aligns with a global trend in the aviation industry toward stricter regulations on portable lithium-ion batteries. The airline states that this decision follows a comprehensive review aimed at consolidating operations to enhance service reliability, especially with the introduction of new aircraft like the Airbus A220 and Q400 turboprops. In response, the Transport Workers Union (TWU) has strongly criticized the move, arguing that it prioritizes profits over people and will harm regional communities and staff stability. A survey conducted by the TWU, Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA), and the Australian Federation of Air Pilots (AFAP) found that 68% of affected pilots would need to consider other employment if the bases closed, with one in five already impacted by recent closures in Perth and Cairns. The closures come as QantasLink posted near-record profits of $2.39 billion. The airline was recently fined a record $90 million by the Federal Court for illegally outsourcing 1,800 ground workers. Despite the base closures, Qantas will continue to employ over 120 staff at its Hobart Contact Centre and plans to hire an additional 13 employees soon Political leaders, including Transport Minister Catherine King also criticized the closures, urging Qantas to reconsider and safeguard local jobs. The unexpected shutdown has left roughly 1,750 passengers stranded at destinations across Europe and North America. The airline cited ongoing financial difficulties, declining ticket sales, and internal operational challenges as the main reasons behind the abrupt closure. Around 500 employees have lost their jobs due to the closure, including pilots, cabin crew, and administrative staff. Play Airlines has stated that it is working to provide guidance and support to its workforce during the transition. Founded in 2019 by former executives of WOW Air and Primera Air, Play Airlines launched operations in 2021 with the goal of offering affordable transatlantic flights connecting Reykjavik’s Keflavík International Airport with European and North American cities. While the airline initially gained traction among price-sensitive travelers, it struggled to maintain profitability amid intense competition and rising operational costs. Until Monday morning, Play Airlines operated flights to several European cities such as London Stansted, Amsterdam, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Alicante, and Faro. The final flight from Reykjavik to Stansted landed on time at 10:40 a.m. on Monday. However, the aircraft remains at the airport, and the scheduled return flight to Reykjavik has been cancelled. PLAY Airlines’ shutdown was driven by mounting financial losses that proved unsustainable. At the end of the previous year, the airline reported a loss of $66 million (£49 million), which amounted to roughly £31 per passenger. Although the airline’s most recent financial results in August 2025 projected that profitability might begin in 2026, these expectations never materialized. Frankfurt, Germany: Lufthansa Group announced on Monday that it plans to eliminate around 4,000 administrative positions by 2030 as part of a wider restructuring strategy aimed at boosting profitability and efficiency through automation, artificial intelligence, and streamlined operations. In recent years, the airline has faced challenges in controlling costs and driving growth amid labor issues. Last year, it issued two profit warnings and the 8% margin target was postponed to 2028–2030. The job reductions will primarily affect back-office, headquarters, and shared service roles in Germany. Flight operations, including pilots and cabin crew, are not expected to be impacted. The decision was unveiled during Lufthansa’s Capital Markets Day, the airline’s first in six years where executives presented new financial targets. The group now aims for an adjusted operating margin of 8 to 10 percent by 2028, annual free cash flow exceeding €2.5 billion, and a 15 to 20 percent return on capital employed before taxes. Alongside workforce cuts, Lufthansa confirmed plans to modernize its fleet with the delivery of more than 230 new aircraft by the end of the decade, including about 100 long-haul planes. Management said the investments, combined with digitalization, will drive efficiency across its airlines: Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, and Eurowings. This move is part of the airline’s strategy to operate an entirely new-generation fleet by 2035. The airline’s board has approved the purchase of 75 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, including 50 firm orders and 25 options for the B787-9 and B787-10 models. Deliveries are scheduled between 2029 and 2034, according to a statement filed with Istanbul's Public Disclosure Platform (KAP). Turkish Airlines is also negotiating with Rolls-Royce and GE Aerospace for engines, spare parts, and maintenance services for the 787 fleet. Additionally, the airline has finalized discussions with Boeing for 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, 100 firm orders and 50 options covering the 737-8 and 737-10 MAX variants. These 737 MAX orders are contingent upon completing engine agreements with CFM International. “Through these acquisitions, our fleet will consist entirely of new-generation aircraft by 2035, enhancing operational efficiency and supporting an estimated 6% annual growth rate,” the airline said. The aircraft, designated “Great Ocean Road” (VH-OGA) and “Outback Way” (VH-OGB), commenced service on 25 September, initially operating the Sydney–Melbourne and Sydney–Perth routes. The names reflect the airline’s tradition of celebrating Australia’s iconic landscapes. Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson noted the scale of preparation required for the launch: “Preparing for these commercial flights has taken an enormous effort, with nearly 350 training flights and more than 40,000 hours of training completed, as well as thousands of pieces of equipment deployed across our network.” Beyond its domestic deployment, the A321XLR’s extended range opens up new possibilities. Notably, the number of Business seats has increased by 66 percent over earlier models. The A321XLRs are powered by Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan engines. Looking ahead, Qantas expects to receive a third A321XLR in November 2025, bringing the total in service to seven by June 2026. In August 2025. Earlier Qantas placed an order for 20 more A321XLRs, pushing its total commitment to 48 aircraft. These aircraft form a key component in Qantas’s largest-ever fleet renewal program, which totals more than 200 firm orders plus additional purchase options from both Airbus and Boeing.

The storm, also called Typhoon Nando in the Philippines, first struck the country’s northern provinces, leaving behind fatalities, flooding, and structural damage. It has since barreled toward Taiwan before sweeping into the Pearl River Delta region, where Hong Kong and Guangdong authorities raised the No. 8 storm signal. Schools and businesses shut down, public transport was suspended, and millions of residents were moved to safer locations in Guangdong province to prepare for storm surges and flash floods. At Hong Kong International Airport, more than 700 flights have been cancelled since Tuesday evening. The suspension began at 6:00 p.m. on September 23 and is set to last until at least 6:00 a.m. on September 25, affecting nearly all passenger and cargo operations.
