The turbulence continued and on Wednesday airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad collectively reported 200 flight cancellations by afternoon, in addition to hundreds of delayed departures and arrivals. The combined impact of delays and cancellations caused widespread disruption for domestic travellers, leaving passengers stranded, scrambling for alternatives, and highlighting the operational strain on the airline’s network. The aircraft touched down at Wolf’s Fang Runway in Queen Maud Land after departing from Cape Town, South Africa. The historic flight was operated using an Airbus A330-302 registered as 9H-HFI and was commanded by Hi Fly Vice-Chairman Captain Carlos Mirpuri, who has previously led several pioneering polar operations for the airline. The mission was conducted on behalf of luxury expedition operator White Desert Antarctica as part of the 2025–26 Antarctic summer season. Wolf’s Fang Runway is a blue-ice airstrip carved out of glacial ice and used for logistics, scientific operations and high-end tourism. In November 2021, Hi Fly made global aviation history by becoming the first airline to land a widebody commercial jet on an Antarctic ice runway. The joint venture, Beijing Aero Engine Services Ltd (BAESL), will induct its first engine in December 2025, with full commercial operations scheduled for early 2026. The Beijing site will overhaul Trent 700, Trent XWB-84, and Trent 1000 engines, which power A330, A350 and Boeing 787 fleets operated by Chinese carriers. Rolls-Royce said BAESL is designed as a “digitally enabled, next-generation” shop with advanced tooling and automation. According to official Beijing investment authorities, the facility spans more than 80,000 sq. m and will employ up to 800 staff once fully ramped up. It is expected to reach an annual capacity of 250 engine shop visits by the mid-2030s.
