Air China expects a first-half net loss of RMB 2.1 billion to RMB 2.6 billion ($293 million-$363 million). China Eastern Airlines has forecast a loss of RMB 3.5 billion to RMB 4 billion, while China Southern Airlines expects a loss between RMB 2.7 billion and RMB 3.3 billion. The losses mark a significant reversal from the first quarter. China Southern reported a first-quarter net profit of RMB 1.48 billion ($216 million), recovering from a RMB 747 million loss in the same period last year. Air China posted a RMB 1.71 billion profit compared with a RMB 2.04 billion loss a year earlier, while China Eastern recorded RMB 1.63 billion profit after a previous-year loss of RMB 995 million. Fuel costs emerged as the biggest pressure point for the carriers. Jet fuel remains the largest operating expense for airlines, typically accounting for around 30%-35% of total operating costs. The escalation in international crude oil prices pushed domestic jet fuel prices significantly higher, with April prices exceeding the previous record reached in July 2022. May fuel prices were reported to be twice the level recorded during the same period in 2025. The Middle East conflict that began in March triggered a rapid increase in oil prices. Industry executives highlighted fuel exposure as the primary impact on airline operations, with fuel prices in March reportedly rising sharply compared with January and February levels. Unlike many international carriers that use extensive fuel-hedging strategies to protect against price volatility, Chinese airlines hedge only a limited portion of their fuel consumption. Domestic travel demand reportedly declined 6.2% in May, marking one of the weakest performances among major aviation markets. The difficult environment has also affected expectations for the summer travel season. July and August passenger numbers are projected to decline 3.6% year on year, while average daily flights and economy-class fares are expected to remain under pressure.

If fuel prices remain near current levels, passengers purchasing tickets during that period are expected to benefit from lower fuel surcharges. The surcharge increase comes as international travelers to Japan are already facing higher travel-related costs introduced on July 1. Japan increased its international departure tax from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 (approximately US$18) per passenger, while visa fees rose from ¥3,000 to ¥15,000 (around US$92), marking the first increase in visa charges since 1978. The increase in female pilots forms part of broader workforce diversity objectives outlined by the SIA Group. Singapore Airlines had set a target of achieving a 25% increase in female pilots from FY2020-21 levels by FY2025-26, while Scoot established a similar target using 2021 as its baseline. According to the latest sustainability report, Singapore Airlines achieved its target, whereas Scoot did not fully meet its corresponding goal. The airline also established leadership diversity targets. Scoot achieved its objective of increasing women in director-level and higher positions by at least 25% from 2021 levels. However, Singapore Airlines fell short of its goal of having women comprise at least 25% of vice-president-level and above leadership positions by the end of FY2025-26, citing staff attrition and internal workforce movements. SIA emphasised that recruitment and promotion decisions continue to be based on a holistic assessment of role requirements, candidate capability and overall suitability, rather than quotas. The gradual rise in female pilots has been supported by pioneering aviators who entered the profession through unconventional routes. Among them is Captain Vanessa Khaw, who began her aviation career as a Singapore Airlines cabin crew member in 2004. Inspired by time spent observing flight operations from the cockpit during meal service, she later self-funded her commercial pilot training, joined Tigerair in 2010, transitioned to Scoot following the airlines' merger, and now serves as an Airbus A320/A321 captain and flight instructor training new pilots. Another example is Senior First Officer Lim Wen Shan, who previously flew C-130 transport aircraft with the Republic of Singapore Air Force before transitioning to commercial aviation in 2019. Despite steady progress, aviation continues to face a significant gender imbalance globally. The policy change came just two weeks after the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced, on June 11, that it was investigating whether Ryanair's mandatory family seating fee amounted to an unfair contract term under UK consumer law. The regulator questioned whether parents were effectively being charged for the airline to meet its own obligations under aviation safety and disability rules, since Ryanair's own conditions required at least one parent to sit with children between the ages of two and eleven. The CMA also noted that additional fees could significantly increase the cost of holidays for families already budgeting carefully for travel. A CMA spokesperson said the regulator would examine whether Ryanair's updated policy fully complies with consumer law. The authority added that while the revised policy appears to benefit families by removing mandatory seating charges, it does not change the fact that passengers had previously been required to pay for so-called mandatory family seats. The watchdog confirmed that Ryanair chose to amend its policy voluntarily and that the ongoing investigation will continue assessing the legality of the airline's previous practices.
