Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Stephanie Pope said the 737-8 will complement Vietnam Airlines’ existing 787 fleet to enhance regional connectivity. The order forms part of broader aerospace agreements signed by Vietnamese carriers in Washington, including commitments by Sun PhuQuoc Airways and Vietjet Air. The contract was signed on Thursday in Washington, D.C., during the official visit of General Secretary Tô Lâm to the United States. The deal, witnessed by senior Vietnamese and U.S. officials, marks Vietnam Airlines’ first direct narrowbody acquisition from Boeing and represents a cornerstone of its long-term strategy to expand domestic and regional operations amid rising air travel demand. Vietnam Airlines plans to take delivery of the Boeing 737-8 jets between 2030 and 2032. With this expansion, the carrier projects its total fleet will grow to approximately 151 aircraft by 2030, strengthening its ability to serve high-traffic domestic and short-haul international routes. The airline’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Đặng Ngọc Hòa, said the investment underscores a “comprehensive and forward-looking” approach to fleet modernization, financial resilience, and human resource development. He emphasized that the new aircraft will enhance “operational performance and service standards” while deepening the airline’s long-standing partnership with Boeing. The Boeing 737-8 is Boeing’s most versatile narrow-body jet, featuring advanced aerodynamics, CFM International LEAP-1B engines and next-generation winglets that deliver about 20 % better fuel efficiency and lower emissions than older aircraft models. Each jet can accommodate up to 200 passengers with a range of up to 6,570 km (approximately 3,550 nautical miles), making it suitable for VN’s dense short- and medium-haul market segments. Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stephanie Pope said the 737-8 will support Vietnam Airlines as it aligns the 737 MAX family with its existing Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet to enhance connectivity across Asia. Vietnam’s aviation market continues to expand rapidly, driven by robust economic growth and increasing mobility across Southeast Asia. Vietnam Airlines aims to maintain double-digit annual growth in key performance indicators, including passenger and cargo traffic, over the next five years. Industry analysts note that the addition of the 737-8 will diversify Vietnam Airlines’ fleet, which currently consists primarily of Airbus A320 family aircraft in the narrowbody segment and Boeing 787 Dreamliners on long-haul services. The Boeing order is part of a flurry of aerospace contracts signed by Vietnamese carriers in Washington this week. In related deals, Sun PhuQuoc Airways committed to purchasing 40 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners in a US$22.5 billion agreement, and Vietjet Air finalised financing for six Boeing 737-8 aircraft. Vietnam Airlines is also in negotiations with Boeing for an additional 30 wide-body jets worth up to US$12 billion, aimed at bolstering its long-haul international network.

Hanoi, Vietnam: Vietnam Airlines (HVN) delivered its strongest financial performance in history in 2025, posting record annual revenue and sharply improved profitability, according to its fourth-quarter financial statements released on January 29. In the fourth quarter of 2025, the national flag carrier recorded consolidated revenue of VND 32.34 trillion (approx. US$1.3 billion), an increase of 12 percent year-on-year. Consolidated pre-tax profit reached nearly VND 540 billion during the period. Vietnam Airlines attributed the strong Q4 performance to higher seat occupancy rates and growing passenger and cargo volumes, particularly on international and regional routes. The airline also increased flight frequencies on key international services and optimized fleet utilization to meet strong demand during the year-end peak travel season. Vietnam Airlines reported consolidated revenue of more than VND 21.43 trillion for the full year 2025, marking the highest annual revenue in the company’s history and a rise of about 10 percent compared with 2024. Consolidated after-tax profit exceeded VND 7.71 trillion, with the portion attributable to the parent company reaching VND 5.51 trillion more than double that of the prior year. Beyond operational gains, Vietnam Airlines implemented multiple service upgrades aimed at boosting passenger experience and strengthening competitiveness. These included: Launch of in-flight internet services. Introduction of the carrier’s signature fragrance, “Nha”. More synchronized services at Terminal 3 of Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport. Biometric VNeID check-in capabilities. Expansion and upgrades of Lotus lounges at major airports. According to the airline, these enhancements not only elevated the travel experience but also supported business performance during the critical holiday period. Vietnam Airlines also strengthened its financial foundations in 2025 by successfully issuing 897 million new shares. This helped return both parent and consolidated equity to positive territory by the end of the year. The airline contributed VND 3.29 trillion to the State budget, a 5 percent year-on-year increase, underscoring its expanding role in supporting Vietnam’s broader economic recovery and growth. Looking ahead, Vietnam Airlines plans to build on the momentum of 2025 by enhancing operational efficiency and financial performance. For 2026, the carrier is targeting: 29.07 million passengers, a 13.2 percent increase over 2025. Approximately 13 percent growth in available seat kilometres to tap into rising demand across the Asia-Pacific aviation market. With a strengthened balance sheet and improving profitability, Vietnam Airlines said it is positioning itself for sustainable medium- and long-term growth while progressing toward its goal of becoming a five-star international airline by 2030.
