New Delhi, India: Three Air India narrow-body aircraft sustained damage at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) after ground support equipment was blown across the apron during sudden strong winds and heavy rain on June 7, 2026. The incident occurred at Terminal 2, where the aircraft were parked on the ground when severe weather conditions struck the airport area. Powerful winds dislodged several pieces of ground support equipment from their designated positions, causing them to collide with the parked aircraft. No injuries were reported and no passengers were on board at the time. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. The damaged aircraft were Air India single-aisle aircraft parked at Terminal 2 when the storm hit. The affected aircraft have been withdrawn from service for inspections and repairs. One aircraft is expected to remain grounded for several days, while the other two could return to operations later this week following technical assessments and necessary repairs. At least three pieces of ground support equipment were involved. These included a passenger step ladder and a trestle that were reportedly positioned near the aircraft stands before the weather deteriorated. The equipment was hurled from its location after strong winds swept across the apron area. Video footage that surfaced online showed a passenger boarding staircase belonging to IndiGo moving uncontrollably across the apron before striking a parked Air India aircraft. The footage quickly circulated on social media and raised questions regarding the securing of movable airport equipment during adverse weather conditions. While it is confirmed that three aircraft were damaged, authorities have not disclosed the registrations of the aircraft or specified which sections of each aircraft were struck. As of June 8, neither Air India nor airport authorities have publicly identified whether the damage occurred to the fuselage, wings, tail, nose section, engines or other structures. Technical inspections are underway to determine the full extent of the damage. The sudden storm brought strong winds and heavy rain to the airport area, creating hazardous ramp conditions within a short period. Following the incident, the damaged aircraft were removed from operational service and subjected to engineering inspections. A probe has been initiated to establish the sequence of events, assess weather-related factors and review ground handling procedures for securing equipment during sudden adverse weather.

Delhi, India: An Air India Airbus A350-900 aircraft operating flight AI101 from Delhi to New York (JFK) suffered significant engine damage early on 15 January 2026 after it ingested a cargo container while taxiing at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) amid dense fog, aviation authorities confirmed. The wide-body aircraft, registered VT-JRB, had taken off from Delhi in the pre-dawn hours but was forced to return shortly after departure due to the temporary closure of Iranian airspace, which disrupted its planned trans-Atlantic routing. Upon landing safely on Runway 28 at approximately 05:25 IST, the jet was taxiing toward its designated parking bay when the incident occurred. According to initial findings by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), a cargo container toppled onto the taxiway intersection of N/N4 after a wheel came loose from a ground-handling tug operated by Bird Worldwide Flight Services (BWFS). The fallen container lay in the aircraft’s path during low-visibility conditions, and the engine sucked the container into its number two (right-hand) engine, resulting in substantial damage to the powerplant. Officials noted that foggy conditions and marginal visibility likely exacerbated the risk, contributing to the ground-handling equipment mishap. Metal debris was cleared from the taxiway before the aircraft was towed to Stand 244 for assessment, the regulator said. Air India confirmed the damage and said the aircraft is grounded for detailed inspection and repairs. In a statement, the carrier said it has positioned the affected jet safely and is assisting passengers with alternative travel arrangements and refunds where required. The airline also warned that the grounding may lead to disruptions on select long-haul routes serviced by its A350 fleet, which includes services to destinations such as London, Newark, and New York. No injuries were reported among the more than 250 passengers and crew aboard the flight, reflecting effective safety protocols despite the rare nature of the incident. The DGCA has initiated a formal investigation into the chain of events that led to the foreign object debris (FOD) incident, focusing on ground-handling procedures, compliance with safety norms, and operations in reduced visibility. Foreign object ingestion events are classified as serious safety occurrences in aviation due to the potential for engine failure.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) confirmed that a malfunction occurred in the airport’s Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS) , a critical platform that generates and distributes flight plans to controllers and pilots. The failure forced the ATC to manually process flight plans, drastically slowing departures through Friday. “The system developed a technical issue late Thursday evening, leading to temporary delays in flight departures,” the AAI said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). “Technical teams are working to restore the system at the earliest.” According to flight-tracking platform Flightradar24, over 800 flights experienced delays, with more than 175 departures affected on Friday morning alone. The average delay was around 55 minutes, but several international routes were held back much longer. Domestic carriers, including IndiGo, SpiceJet and Air India, reported schedule disruptions. IndiGo’s shares dropped 1.5 % in response. An ITA Airways flight to Rome was delayed by nearly two hours, while a Virgin Atlantic service to London took off more than an hour behind schedule. While the AAI has not confirmed the root cause, officials said preliminary checks are underway to determine whether the issue was linked to a possible malware intrusion. A senior aviation ministry source told Reuters that “cybersecurity experts are reviewing the system logs for any signs of tampering or external interference.” Delhi’s IGIA, managed by GMR Airports Limited and overseen by the AAI, handled 78 million passengers in 2024, ranking as the ninth-busiest airport globally according to Airports Council International. AAI technicians and software vendors were still working late Friday to fully restore the AMSS. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been briefed and is monitoring the situation for compliance and safety implications. No cancellations were officially reported, but passengers experienced long queues, rescheduling, and confusion as airlines adjusted flight plans.
