New Delhi: Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) will temporarily limit its airspace every day from January 19 to January 26 between 10:20 AM and 12:45 PM in anticipation of Republic Day 2025, per the most recent NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) issued.
This 2.25-hour closure is expected to impact 1,336 flights over the eight-day period, disrupting both domestic and international operations.
The closures are part of the city’s security measures for the Republic Day parade and aerial flypast, key highlights of the annual celebration held at Kartavya Path. During this time, rehearsals featuring parade participants, military hardware displays, and cultural exhibits will take place.
Flight Disruptions in Detail
According to a Mint report, based on data by aviation analytics company Cirium, the 2.25-hour suspension of Delhi Airport across eight days will affect 1,336 flights. The closures will affect 85 departures and a similar number of arrivals on Sunday, January 19. Other days will see disruptions ranging between 79 to 87 flights.
Key international routes impacted include flights from Toronto, Washington, Tashkent, Kathmandu, and Colombo.
Most flights will be rescheduled, with revised timings shared in advance. However, dense fog in Delhi—common during this time of year—may exacerbate delays and cancellations. As of January 7, thick fog had already delayed 300 flights at Delhi Airport, although no diversions were reported.
How Passengers Can Prepare
Airlines will notify passengers about changes in schedules. Ensure contact details provided at booking are accurate.
Regularly monitor your airline’s website and social media handles for updates.
When possible, schedule flights outside the restricted hours to avoid disruptions.
Be prepared for potential wait times, especially due to challenges of fog and high passenger volumes.
Challenges for Airlines and Authorities
The annual Republic Day airspace restrictions are routine but disruptive. The combination of airspace closures, dense fog, and an increase in passenger traffic makes this period especially challenging for both airlines and travelers.
As Delhi Airport works to handle the situation, passengers are encouraged to remain proactive and plan ahead to minimize inconvenience.
