Missouri, United States: A small aircraft crashed and burst into flames north of the Midwest National Air Center on Wednesday morning, killing both people on board. Authorities confirmed the victims as Mark and Vickie Spelts, a couple from Chico, California, who owned Spelts Wealth Management. The aircraft, a Cessna C340, went down in a soybean field near Excelsior Springs around 10:30 a.m. First responders arrived within minutes to find the wreckage engulfed in flames. Despite rapid emergency response, neither occupant survived the impact and fire. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said deputies and local fire crews secured the crash site and worked to extinguish the blaze. “It was fully involved when crews got here,” one official noted, emphasizing the intensity of the fire. As a precaution, the Midwest National Air Center temporarily closed to all air traffic while investigators examined the site. Flights resumed later in the evening around 5 p.m. after safety checks were completed. Family members and business associates confirmed that the victims were Mark and Vickie Spelts. The couple were well-known in northern California for their financial advisory firm and for their community involvement. Their deaths prompted an outpouring of condolences from clients and friends in Chico. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have taken over the investigation. The FAA said the twin-engine plane departed from a nearby airport before the crash, though the purpose of the flight has not been disclosed. Investigators are expected to analyze flight data, weather conditions, and maintenance records to determine the cause.

Algeria, Africa: A civil protection surveillance aircraft crashed on Tuesday during a routine training exercise at Ferhat Abbas Airport in Algeria’s northeastern Jijel province, killing all four occupants on board. Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the cause of the fatal incident, which has drawn national and international attention due to the presence of a foreign national among the victims. According to Algeria’s Civil Protection Service, the aircraft involved was a Zlin‑type reconnaissance plane, a light aircraft commonly used for aerial surveillance, wildfire monitoring, and training flights. The crash occurred while the aircraft was performing training maneuvers at the airport, located approximately 350 kilometers east of the capital, Algiers. Emergency responders rushed to the crash site but confirmed that all four individuals onboard had died instantly. The victims were identified as two Civil Protection officers, a flight instructor from the Civil Protection Aviation School, and a Chilean national who was reportedly an aviation company manager. The Civil Protection Service confirmed that an investigative committee has been established to examine the crash. Technical experts have been deployed to the crash site to recover debris and secure flight data for analysis. Initial findings suggest no immediate signs of foul play, and weather conditions were reported to be clear at the time of the accident, though investigators have not ruled out technical failure or human error as potential causes. The state news agency APS, cited by Reuters, reported that the aircraft was conducting a training sortie when it experienced what appeared to be a sudden loss of control before hitting the ground. Witnesses from the airport staff have been interviewed, and a preliminary safety bulletin is expected in the coming days. The Civil Protection Service emphasized in a statement that its surveillance and training flights are critical to supporting national emergency response and wildfire monitoring. The agency expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and pledged full transparency as the investigation continues.
