Frankfurt, Germany: Lufthansa Group announced on Monday that it plans to eliminate around 4,000 administrative positions by 2030 as part of a wider restructuring strategy aimed at boosting profitability and efficiency through automation, artificial intelligence, and streamlined operations. In recent years, the airline has faced challenges in controlling costs and driving growth amid labor issues. Last year, it issued two profit warnings and the 8% margin target was postponed to 2028–2030. The job reductions will primarily affect back-office, headquarters, and shared service roles in Germany. Flight operations, including pilots and cabin crew, are not expected to be impacted. The decision was unveiled during Lufthansa’s Capital Markets Day, the airline’s first in six years where executives presented new financial targets. The group now aims for an adjusted operating margin of 8 to 10 percent by 2028, annual free cash flow exceeding €2.5 billion, and a 15 to 20 percent return on capital employed before taxes. Alongside workforce cuts, Lufthansa confirmed plans to modernize its fleet with the delivery of more than 230 new aircraft by the end of the decade, including about 100 long-haul planes. Management said the investments, combined with digitalization, will drive efficiency across its airlines: Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, and Eurowings. Chief Executive Carsten Spohr emphasized the need for structural change, noting that consolidation of overlapping functions and the use of digital tools will “make the group more competitive and resilient.” The announcement sparked criticism from German labor unions. Representatives from Ver.di, one of the country’s unions, warned of the social consequences of the cuts and demanded government oversight. Markets, however, reacted positively. Lufthansa’s shares rose nearly 2 percent following the announcement, reflecting investor confidence in the group’s ability to deliver stronger returns. The company stressed that the job reductions will be gradual and spread over five years, easing the transition for employees and giving time to implement retraining or redeployment measures. On the contrary, earlier this year, Lufthansa had announced plans to hire approximately 10,000 new employees throughout 2025. The recruitment drive covered a wide range of roles, including more than 2,000 flight attendants, 1,400 ground operations staff, 1,300 technical experts, 1,200 administrative roles, and around 800 pilot positions. A significant portion of these new jobs was expected to be located in Germany, reflecting Lufthansa’s efforts to strengthen its domestic operations. Among its subsidiaries, Lufthansa Technik alone planned to add over 2,000 staff, while Austrian Airlines and Eurowings each aimed to hire roughly 700 employees. The group reported that in 2024 it had onboarded more than 13,000 new employees and, over a three-year period, had hired over 30,000 staff globally.

This move comes after previous reductions totaling 2 million seats across the summer 2025 and upcoming winter season, affecting mainly regional airports and destinations in the Canary Islands. The airline’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, criticized Spanish airport operator Aena’s decision to raise passenger charges by 6.5% starting March 2026. O’Leary warned that if regional Spanish airport costs remain high, Ryanair may redirect flights to alternative destinations such as Italy, Morocco, Croatia, and Albania, where operational costs are lower. O’Leary emphasized that the airline’s operational strategy prioritizes profitability and cost efficiency, and high airport fees could make certain Spanish routes financially unviable. “We will continue to operate in markets where costs are reasonable. If charges remain high, we will adjust our schedule accordingly,” he said. The Spanish government and Aena have publicly criticized Ryanair’s stance, labeling the airline’s threat of seat reductions as an attempt at “blackmail” and “extortion.” Aena defended the fee increases as necessary for maintaining airport infrastructure and service quality. Officials stressed that these fees are essential to support the growing passenger traffic and investments at regional airports. Ryanair's actions could impact tourism in the affected regions, with potential implications for regional economies dependent on international and domestic travel. Passengers are advised to monitor airline schedules closely and consider alternative carriers for summer 2026 travel.

Warsaw, Poland: LOT Polish Airlines has reported its most successful month in its 96-year history, setting new records in passenger numbers, flight operations, and distance covered in July 2025. The airline transported 1,185,946 passengers, surpassing the previous July 2023 record by over 144,000 travelers. Additionally, LOT operated 11,072 flights, averaging more than 350 per day, and covered a total distance of 15.5 million kilometers, equivalent to approximately 400 trips around the world along the equator or 20 journeys to the moon and back. In July 2025, LOT's aircraft accumulated 25,623 block hours, nearly 1,000 hours more than the previous high in July 2019. This significant increase underscores the airline's capacity to meet rising demand and maintain operational efficiency. European routes to Vilnius, London, and Amsterdam were among the most frequented, reflecting strong demand for both business and leisure travel within Europe. On the long-haul front, flights to Toronto, New York (JFK), and Chicago attracted the highest passenger volumes, indicating a robust appetite for direct connections between Europe and North America. LOT's growth is attributed to its expanding network and strategic route additions. In 2025, the airline launched new services from Kraków to Paris Orly and from Warsaw to Thessaloniki, Malta, Reykjavik, and Lisbon. Further expansion is planned with upcoming routes to Marrakesh and Rovaniemi in the autumn, alongside additional destinations to be announced by the end of the year. Supporting its growth, LOT is enhancing its fleet with the introduction of new aircraft. At the end of 2025, the first of 13 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft ordered by the airline is expected to arrive in Warsaw from the Boeing factory in Seattle. These new planes, along with previously ordered Airbus A220 aircraft, will play a key role in delivering the airline’s 2024–2028 strategic plan, enabling continued network growth and enhanced service for passengers across both European and long-haul routes. LOT's hub at Warsaw Chopin Airport has been instrumental in its success, with nearly 60% of passengers now traveling as transit passengers.
