All 26 passengers and 3 crew evacuated; there are no reported fatalities or serious injuries. Initial reports suggest the aircraft touched down before a displaced threshold on runway 29, which was under maintenance. The Notam issued for Kolwezi Airport indicated that 1,000 metres of the runway were being resurfaced, reducing the effective landing distance. According to the Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Archives, this could have contributed to the gear collapse. Eyewitnesses and social media footage show thick smoke rising from the rear fuselage as passengers escaped, some via overwing exits. Isaac Nyembo, communications adviser to Minister Kabamba, said around 20 people were evacuated before the fire spread, though luggage was damaged. Airbus estimates the need for 69,000 pilots, 64,000 aircraft technicians, and almost 132,000 cabin crew by 2044. The hiring surge aligns with a major increase in aircraft operating in the region. The in-service fleet, currently around 1,480 aircraft, is expected to grow to 3,700 within two decades. Wide-body aircraft will make up 42% of future fleet requirements, more than double the global average. The commercial aviation services market, covering maintenance, training, operations, and air traffic management, is projected to reach US$ 30 billion over the same period. Passenger traffic is forecast to grow at a 4.4% compound annual rate, driven by population growth, expanding tourism, and rising regional trade. Airbus also notes that the Middle East’s population is expected to increase by nearly 240 million people by 2044, further boosting air-travel demand. Airbus executives say the region’s geographic advantage and growing airline networks position it as a future global connector. “The Middle East is becoming the long-haul hub now and into the future,” said Gabriel Semelas, the company’s president for Africa and the Middle East, citing the strong long-range fleet requirements throughout the Gulf. Independent economic studies also highlight how central aviation has become to the region’s future. An Oxford Economics report commissioned by Emirates Group and Dubai Airports shows the sector supported 631,000 jobs in Dubai in 2023 and contributed AED 137 billion to the emirate’s GDP. By 2030, aviation-linked employment is expected to rise to 816,000 jobs, representing nearly one in four positions in Dubai. The airline said the move marks a major milestone in its ongoing digital overhaul aimed at streamlining airport processes, cutting costs and reducing paper waste. The shift was originally scheduled for 3 November but was pushed to 12 November to avoid peak mid-term travel. From now on, passengers checking in for any Ryanair flight must use the myRyanair mobile app, which generates the only accepted boarding pass format. Ryanair said the first day of the rollout was “a huge success,” with more than 700 flights departing by mid-day and over 98% of passengers using digital passes without issues. The remaining 2%, mostly travellers unable to load the app, were issued printed passes at airport desks free of charge, provided they had already checked in online. CMO Dara Brady said customer feedback was “universally positive” and the digital system helped speed up security and boarding processes. Ryanair confirmed that printed boarding passes will no longer be accepted at any airport unless local regulations require them. Exemptions remain in specific markets such as Morocco, Tirana (Albania) until March 2026. Passengers who lose phone access after checking in due to battery failure or device issues will receive a printed pass at the airport at no additional charge. The airline says the digital switch will eliminate over 300 tonnes of paper annually, while nearly 80% of its 200 million passengers were already using digital boarding passes. Ryanair also expects the move to help phase out most airport check-in fees. The myRyanair app now centralizes travel documents and offers new features including “Order to Seat” food and beverage delivery, live gate and delay alerts, and real-time disruption updates.
