Calgary, Canada: WestJet flight attendants launched a nationwide strike on Sunday after negotiations between Canada's second-largest airline and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) failed to produce a new collective agreement, triggering widespread flight cancellations during one of the country's busiest summer travel weekends. The strike involves approximately 4,400 cabin crew members represented by CUPE and follows months of contract negotiations centered on wages, compensation for duties performed on the ground, scheduling, and broader quality-of-life improvements. The previous collective agreement expired on December 31, 2025. WestJet said the work stoppage forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights and significantly disrupted operations across its network. According to the airline, approximately 250,000 passengers have been affected by the disruption. Aviation analytics firm Cirium reported that more than 600 flights had been cancelled by Sunday morning, while FlightAware also recorded hundreds of cancellations across the carrier's network. The industrial action began after the union issued a 72-hour strike notice on July 30. WestJet responded with a lockout notice while both sides continued negotiations until shortly before the deadline. Despite last-minute bargaining efforts, no agreement was reached. At the center of the dispute is compensation for work performed before takeoff and after landing. CUPE argues that flight attendants should be paid from the time they report for duty until they complete their shifts, rather than primarily for time when the aircraft is in motion. The union maintains that pre-flight safety checks, boarding, passenger assistance, deplaning and other ground responsibilities deserve dedicated compensation. WestJet disputes the claim that this work is unpaid, stating that its existing "credit hour" compensation model already accounts for flight time, delays and various ground duties through a blended pay system rather than a conventional hourly wage. Following the start of the strike, WestJet publicly released details of what it described as its final contract proposal. The airline said the offer included a 13% wage increase effective October 2026, annual wage increases of 2.5% through 2029, retroactive pay to January 1, 2026, and additional compensation for all hours worked before and after flights, which it said represented an increase equivalent to approximately 12% of salary. The proposal also included higher meal allowances, expanded vacation benefits, annual health-care spending accounts, improved maternity leave provisions, scheduling enhancements, reduced maximum duty periods, additional rest time, and compensation for certain operational disruptions such as reassigned duties and hotel delays. WestJet Group Chief Executive Officer Alexis von Hoensbroech said the airline remained committed to reaching a negotiated settlement, describing the proposal as an industry-leading package that addressed the union's stated priorities while supporting the airline's long-term sustainability. He said the company believed an agreement remained achievable despite the strike. CUPE's WestJet Component President Alia Hussain said the union continued to seek a fair contract that properly recognizes the value of cabin crew work. She stated that members were prepared to return to the bargaining table and emphasized that compensation for unpaid ground duties remains a significant issue alongside broader contractual improvements. The dispute mirrors a wider movement among North American flight attendants seeking compensation for time spent working before aircraft doors close and after flights arrive at the gate. Similar disputes have recently taken place at Air Canada, where cabin crew secured boarding pay earlier this year following industrial action. In recent years, Delta Air Lines became the first major North American carrier to introduce dedicated boarding pay, with American Airlines and Alaska Airlines later implementing similar compensation models. WestJet currently operates under a credit-hour pay system, with compensation varying according to seniority. According to the airline, the structure combines flight hours and several non-flying duties into a single rate of pay rather than paying separately for each duty performed during a shift. The strike comes during a peak summer travel period and a three-day holiday weekend in Canada, increasing its impact on passengers and businesses. WestJet normally operates more than 600 flights daily and transports tens of thousands of passengers across Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, Central America and Europe. The airline holds roughly 30% of Canada's domestic aviation market. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce described the work stoppage as a significant disruption for travellers and businesses, warning that prolonged industrial action could affect tourism, supply chains and economic activity during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Canada's federal government acknowledged the disruption, with Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu expressing disappointment that negotiations failed to reach a settlement while reiterating that durable agreements are generally achieved through collective bargaining. The collision occurred over the Psatha area near Porto Germeno, west of the Greek capital, where emergency crews were battling a wind-driven wildfire that has been burning since Friday. According to Greek authorities, both helicopters were Bell firefighting helicopters operating on aerial water-dropping missions over the fire zone. Each helicopter carried two crew members. One aircraft crashed following the collision, killing its Danish pilot and a Greek fire service liaison officer. The second helicopter managed to make an emergency landing, and its occupants, a British pilot and a Greek crew member survived with minor injuries. Both survivors were transported to hospital for treatment. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased or the survivors. The exact cause of the mid-air collision remains under investigation. Officials have not indicated whether the helicopters made physical contact during water-dropping operations or while manoeuvring over the wildfire. No preliminary findings have been released, and investigators are expected to examine flight operations, communications and weather conditions in the area. The helicopters were supporting efforts to contain a rapidly spreading wildfire near Porto Germeno, a coastal community on the Gulf of Corinth. Strong, gusting winds significantly complicated firefighting operations, limiting aircraft movements and, at times, preventing helicopters and water bombers from safely collecting seawater for repeated drops. Nearly 500 firefighters supported by 23 aircraft were deployed to combat the blaze. The fire, which ignited near Agios Vasileios on Friday, spread quickly through dry forests toward Porto Germeno and surrounding mountainous terrain west of Athens. Authorities ordered evacuations for the communities of Kandili, Agia Skepi, and Toutouli as flames advanced. Earlier in the emergency, firefighters evacuated 254 people by sea on Friday and another 12 on Saturday, with maritime evacuations becoming the safest option after smoke and flames threatened the limited road access from coastal settlements. Wildfire meteorologist Theodore Giannaros estimated the blaze had affected approximately 40 to 50 square kilometres (15–19 square miles), although Greek authorities had not issued an official burn-area estimate. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed condolences following the accident. "The loss of the Greek coordinator and the Danish pilot at the time they were attempting the major fire in Porto Germeno fills us all with grief," Mitsotakis said in a statement. The service later added, "The pilot ejected, was transported to a local medical facility in stable condition for evaluation and treatment of non life threatening injuries." The Marine Corps classified the event as a Class A mishap, the military's most serious accident category. A Class A mishap is designated when an aircraft is destroyed, damage exceeds USD 2 million or a fatality occurs. In this case, the classification reflects the destruction of the aircraft even though the pilot survived. Authorities have not determined or announced the cause of the crash. New Delhi, India: The Airline Pilots' Association of India (ALPA India) has strongly rejected recent remarks by IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia attributing India's pilot shortage to revised flight duty and fatigue management regulations, asserting instead that deeper structural issues within the aviation industry are constraining the country's pilot workforce. In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 29, 2026, ALPA India said the debate surrounding pilot availability should focus on long-standing industry practices rather than the implementation of revised Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL). The pilots' body maintained that India's aviation sector has sufficient interest among aspiring pilots but alleged that barriers within the training and employment ecosystem are restricting the effective supply of qualified flight crew. According to reports by PTI, ALPA India disputed suggestions that enhanced fatigue regulations are responsible for the industry's staffing challenges. Instead, the association argued that three structural issues continue to affect pilot availability: the high cost of cadet training and aircraft type ratings, alleged anti-competitive hiring practices among airlines, and wage-related employment practices that limit pilot mobility. The association urged the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to expedite investigations into these issues, stating that addressing structural barriers would provide a more sustainable solution to pilot shortages than revisiting safety-focused flight duty regulations. The remarks came after Rahul Bhatia co-founder of IndiGo and serves as the Managing Director of InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., the parent company of IndiGo expressed concerns over the implementation of revised DGCA Flight Duty Time Limitations, stating that the changes could intensify pilot shortages and increase operational challenges for airlines. His comments reignited discussion across the aviation sector regarding the balance between operational efficiency and flight safety. Bhatia told PTI, "I think Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) needs a review, and I think there's enough conversation going on with the government. All we want to do is appeal to the government that we must follow the global best practices". Responding directly to Rahul Bhatia's recent comments, ALPA India argued that weakening or delaying fatigue management reforms would not resolve the industry's workforce challenges. Instead, it said policy attention should remain focused on ensuring fair market practices while maintaining internationally accepted flight safety standards designed to reduce pilot fatigue. India's revised FDTL regulations were introduced by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) following recommendations aimed at strengthening pilot fatigue management. The association argued that the financial burden associated with airline cadet programmes and mandatory type-rating training has significantly increased the cost of entering the profession, making commercial pilot careers inaccessible for many aspiring candidates. The pilots' body also alleged that anti-competitive employment practices within the industry have affected labour mobility. It claimed that certain hiring practices discourage experienced pilots from moving between airlines, thereby limiting competition in the labour market and suppressing salary growth. ALPA India said these issues require regulatory scrutiny by the Competition Commission of India. The association further maintained that wage suppression has become another contributing factor behind the industry's pilot supply concerns. According to ALPA India, compensation structures and employment conditions at certain carriers discourage both retention and recruitment despite growing demand for pilots as Indian airlines continue expanding their fleets. ALPA India claimed that airline-backed cadet programmes require aspiring pilots to spend between ₹60 lakh and ₹1.25 crore on training, significantly higher than international type-rating programmes that typically cost around ₹20 lakh. The association further alleged that many cadets are bound by long-term employment agreements despite having no assurance of securing a job. ALPA India reiterated that pilot shortages cannot be attributed solely to duty-time regulations and emphasized that broader structural reforms are necessary. The association said reducing financial barriers for cadet pilots, ensuring competitive hiring practices and addressing employment-related concerns would help strengthen the long-term supply of qualified flight crew in India's rapidly expanding aviation market. Neither the Ministry of Civil Aviation nor the Competition Commission of India had publicly responded to ALPA India's latest appeal at the time of publication.
