Vancouver, Canada: Canadian aviation authorities have launched a formal safety probe after an Air India pilot was found to be under the influence of alcohol before operating an international flight from Vancouver, prompting an inquiry and corrective action demands to the Indian carrier. The incident occurred on December 23, 2025, at Vancouver International Airport ahead of Flight AI186, scheduled to operate from Vancouver to Delhi via Vienna. According to a letter from Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA) to Air India officials, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that the pilot, identified as Captain Saurabh Kumar, reported for duty while under the influence of alcohol and was deemed unfit for the flight. Canadian authorities conducted two breathalyser tests that confirmed the presence of alcohol, following which the pilot was advised to leave the aircraft and was subsequently removed from duty at the scene. Transport Canada has characterised the occurrence as a violation of Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs), citing breaches of sections 602.02 and 602.03, which govern crew fitness for duty and alcohol consumption limits, as well as conditions of Air India’s Foreign Air Operator Certificate (FAOC). In its correspondence, Transport Canada has formally asked Air India to investigate the matter under its Safety Management System and submit a detailed corrective action report by January 26, 2026. The regulator indicated that enforcement action by both the RCMP and the TCCA is likely as the review progresses. Air India confirmed that Flight AI186 experienced a last-minute delay on December 23 after the cockpit crew member was offloaded prior to departure “based on concerns raised by the Canadian authorities regarding the pilot’s fitness for duty.” The airline said an alternate pilot was rostered in accordance with safety protocols, resulting in the delayed departure. In an official statement, Air India said it regrets the inconvenience caused to passengers, is fully cooperating with Canadian authorities, and has taken the pilot off flying duties pending the outcome of the inquiry. The airline reiterated a zero-tolerance policy toward violations of applicable rules and regulations, noting that “any confirmed violation will attract strict disciplinary action in line with company policy.” Initial accounts of the incident suggest that the episode first came to light after a duty-free shop employee at the Vancouver airport reported a concern about the pilot either smelling of alcohol or consuming it moments before boarding preparations. This triggered intervention by Canadian authorities and the subsequent breathalyser tests.

Katunayake, Sri Lanka: A Turkish Airlines Airbus A330 operating Flight TK-733 from Colombo to Istanbul made a safe emergency landing early Wednesday morning at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) after the crew detected a technical issue with the aircraft’s landing gear shortly after departure, according to airport authorities and multiple media reports. The wide-body aircraft, carrying 202 passengers and 10 crew members, departed BIA at around 10:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday. Shortly after take-off, the flight crew identified a problem with the landing gear and opted to return to the airport as a precautionary measure. In accordance with standard safety procedures, the aircraft circled over Sri Lankan airspace, including areas near Colombo and Chilaw, to burn excess fuel and reduce landing weight before the emergency return. Airport officials placed the runway on emergency standby, with fire and rescue teams, ambulances, and other emergency response units deployed in anticipation of the aircraft’s return. At approximately 00:28 a.m. local time, the Turkish Airlines flight made a safe touchdown at BIA. All passengers and crew disembarked without injury, and emergency services were subsequently stood down. Officials noted that regular flight operations at the airport continued during the incident and there were no reported disruptions to other scheduled services. Investigations are expected to be carried out to determine the precise cause of the landing gear issue. Passengers aboard the flight were assisted following disembarkation, with arrangements made for onward travel and accommodation as necessary.

Beijing, China: A Beijing court has delivered a significant legal ruling in one of the longest-running civil matters connected to the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, ordering the airline to pay compensation to the families of eight passengers more than 11 years after the aircraft vanished. On 8 March 2014, Flight MH370, a Boeing 777 operating from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, disappeared from radar just under an hour after take-off with 239 people on board. Despite extensive international search efforts in the southern Indian Ocean and intermittent private expeditions, the main wreckage of the aircraft has never been found and the cause of its disappearance remains unresolved. The Chaoyang District People’s Court in Beijing ruled that Malaysia Airlines must pay 2.9 million yuan (approximately US$410,000) to each of the eight families whose relatives were aboard the flight and have now been legally declared dead. The compensation is intended to cover funeral expenses, emotional distress, and other financial losses, according to the court statement. This judgment represents the first formal Chinese court decision awarding damages in MH370-related litigation. A spokesman for the court said that 47 other cases were withdrawn after the families reached out-of-court settlements with Malaysia Airlines and its international arm, while 23 cases remain pending in the Chinese legal system. Most of the passengers on MH370 were Chinese nationals, giving Chinese courts jurisdiction over compensation claims under international air law and domestic regulations. Under the Montreal Convention, airlines are liable for proven damages in international air transport, with additional court proceedings often required to quantify emotional and non-economic damage. Malaysia Airlines has not publicly commented on the ruling at the time of publication. The compensation ruling comes as renewed interest and activity surrounds the ongoing search for MH370’s wreckage. Malaysian authorities have announced plans to restart a seabed search operation at the end of December 2025, focusing on a designated area of the Indian Ocean informed by the latest data and analysis from marine robotics firm Ocean Infinity operating under a “no-find, no-fee” contract. This new search phase underscores the enduring quest for answers from families and aviation experts nearly a decade and a half after the disappearance of the flight, one of the most enduring mysteries in modern aviation history.

Ranchi, India: An IndiGo aircraft operating the Bhubaneswar–Ranchi sector experienced a tail strike while landing at Birsa Munda Airport on the evening of 12 December, officials confirmed. The incident caused a sudden jolt inside the cabin, but all passengers and crew were safe, with no reported injuries. Flight 6E‑7361, an ATR‑72 turboprop carrying about 70 passengers, made contact with the runway with its tail section during touchdown, according to airport authorities. Vinod Kumar, Ranchi Airport Director, confirmed that the impact was jolting but did not endanger passenger safety. “All passengers were safe. The aircraft sustained minor damage and has been grounded pending technical inspection,” Kumar stated. Following the incident, the aircraft was withdrawn from service after preliminary checks indicated it was unfit for further operations. The airline also cancelled the return flight from Ranchi to Bhubaneswar, offering passengers alternative arrangements or rescheduling options. Some passengers were transported by road to nearby destinations. Airport operations remained normal despite the incident. Aviation authorities and IndiGo’s technical team have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the tail strike, including factors such as aircraft configuration, weather conditions, or operational technique. Tail strikes occur when the rear portion of an aircraft contacts the runway during take-off or landing. While typically survivable, such incidents require detailed inspection to ensure structural and system integrity. In recent years, IndiGo has faced increased regulatory scrutiny over operational performance and safety standards, particularly amid widespread flight disruptions across its network. Earlier in March 2025, an IndiGo Airbus A321 operating Flight 6E‑5325 from Mumbai to Chennai also suffered a tail strike during landing at Chennai International Airport, when the aircraft’s empennage made contact with the runway surface. The aircraft was then grounded for technical inspection and necessary repairs, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) launched a formal investigation into the incident to determine contributing factors, including flight operations and aircraft handling.

Istanbul, Turkey: A scheduled flight from Pristina to Istanbul ended in a runway excursion late on December 7 as a Anadolujet (AJet) Boeing 737-800 veered off the newly-opened runway at Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW). The incident has forced closure of runway 06R/24L and triggered widespread flight delays and cancellations across one of Turkey’s busiest air hubs. Flight VF102 registration TC-JZN touched down on runway 24L just before 18:00 local time. According to Initial reports, the aircraft slowed but, while attempting a high-speed turnoff via taxiway A6 roughly 1,850 metres down the runway, failed to make the turn. The plane skidded off the paved surface onto soft ground adjacent to the runway, coming to a halt within the runway protected area. Despite the dramatic nature of the event, all passengers and crew on board were evacuated safely using external stairs and emergency slides were not deployed. There have been no reports of injuries. According to the airline and official statements from the embassy of Kosovo in Turkey, the aircraft’s deviation was not due to a mechanical failure or pilot error, but was triggered by wet and soft terrain following heavy rainfall in the area. Investigators have reportedly launched a probe to verify whether runway surface conditions played a decisive role. The incident forced an immediate closure of runway 06R/24L to allow for safe removal of the aircraft and inspection of the runway and taxiway infrastructure. Aviation authorities recorded flight delays. Flights operated by several major carriers including Turkish Airlines, as well as regional and international airlines were among those severely disrupted. For many passengers, plans for onward travel or hotel reservations in Istanbul and other destinations have been upended. Airport management crews have commenced full inspection of runway and taxiway surfaces, drainage systems, and runway safety features before reopening. Meanwhile, regulatory bodies have signaled that a broader review of weather-related landing protocols and runway maintenance procedures may follow.
