Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has called on African governments to prioritise aviation as a core pillar of economic and social development, stressing that the sector must be viewed as essential infrastructure rather than a source of taxation. Speaking at the Focus Africa Conference in Addis Ababa, IATA’s Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, Kamil Alawadhi, said aviation delivers long-term value through job creation, trade facilitation, tourism growth, and regional integration. “Aviation is the economic infrastructure for Africa. Its value lies in the long-term benefits it delivers,” Alawadhi said. “An aviation strategy focused on safety, cost-competitiveness, energy security and sustainability, and ease of doing business will create jobs, enable trade, support tourism, and further regional integration.” He added that the economic benefits generated by aviation “will allow governments to push forward social and economic development more durably than any tax that might be collected from travelers.” IATA acknowledged that Africa has made progress in aviation safety, with accident rates improving between 2024 and 2025. However, it noted that the region still lags behind global standards. The association highlighted that Africa’s accident rate remains significantly higher than the global average, underlining the need for stronger implementation of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and recommended practices. It also pointed to weak accident reporting compliance, urging states to publish timely and complete investigation reports in line with Annex 13 obligations, calling these reports essential for improving aviation safety. IATA raised concerns over the high cost of aviation operations in Africa, stating that taxes and charges imposed by governments and infrastructure providers are approximately 15% higher than the global average. The association warned that increasing charges such as passenger-related fees distort ticket pricing, reduce demand, and weaken air connectivity across the continent. It also urged governments to reverse rising aviation-related API-PNR charges and implement regional decisions aimed at reducing aviation taxes and charges to improve affordability and market access. Another key concern highlighted was the issue of blocked airline funds. IATA reported that African countries account for a significant share of global blocked airline revenues, with funds failing to be repatriated despite international agreements guaranteeing such transfers. The association stressed that inability to access revenues undermines airline operations, forcing carriers to reduce flight frequencies or suspend routes, ultimately affecting connectivity and economic activity. IATA called on governments to comply with international obligations and ensure unrestricted repatriation of airline revenues. The organisation also emphasised the need to improve the ease of doing business in aviation markets across Africa. It highlighted visa restrictions as a major barrier to intra-African travel, noting that nearly half of travel within the continent still requires visas before departure. IATA said easing these restrictions would significantly boost tourism, trade, and regional mobility. It further urged governments to remove operational bottlenecks that hinder airline efficiency and market access. IATA also highlighted Africa’s potential role in sustainable aviation, particularly in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production and carbon markets. The association noted that Africa could supply significant volumes of SAF feedstock by 2050, using agricultural residues, forestry waste, and municipal waste streams. It also encouraged African states to participate in the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), describing it as a key global mechanism for managing aviation emissions while unlocking climate finance opportunities for developing economies. IATA concluded that Africa’s aviation sector has strong growth potential, but structural challenges related to cost, safety, regulation, and financial restrictions must be addressed to fully unlock its economic impact.

Gurugram, India: India’s largest airline, IndiGo, announced on March 31, 2026, the appointment of Willie Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer, following the recent resignation of Pieter Elbers amid operational challenges. Walsh, currently serving as Director General of the International Air Transport Association, will assume the role on or before August 3, 2026, after completing his tenure at IATA on July 31. Elbers stepped down on March 10, 2026, citing personal reasons. However, his departure followed a major operational disruption in December 2025, when IndiGo cancelled over 4,500 flights due to issues linked to pilot duty regulations and crew rostering challenges. The crisis led to regulatory scrutiny and criticism over operational oversight, with the airline acknowledging internal lapses. Despite overseeing significant expansion, including strengthening IndiGo’s international footprint, the disruption accelerated the leadership transition. Walsh brings over four decades of aviation experience to IndiGo. He began his career as a pilot with Aer Lingus in 1979 and later became its CEO, leading a successful turnaround of the airline. He subsequently served as CEO of British Airways from 2005 to 2011, before heading International Airlines Group, the parent company of British Airways and Iberia, where he played a key role in building one of the world’s largest airline groups. Since 2021, Walsh has led IATA, representing airlines globally on industry, regulatory, and policy matters. The figure represents a 2% year-on-year increase from 295 million passengers in 2024, confirming that the sector has not only recovered from the pandemic but has now surpassed previous historic peaks. Commenting on the record-breaking performance, Selina Chadha, Group Director for Consumers and Markets at the CAA, said, “It has never been more popular to fly, and 2025 was officially a record-breaking year. While the sector grows from strength to strength, we continue working with aviation partners to drive even higher safety standards and protect passengers when they fly.” The CAA noted that the milestone is significant, with total passenger volumes exceeding the combined populations of several major European countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands. The latest data highlights a sustained long-term expansion of UK aviation, with passenger numbers having tripled since 1989. Demand is expected to remain strong, supported by consumer sentiment. According to the regulator’s annual survey, 31% of respondents plan to fly more in the coming year, indicating continued upward momentum for the sector. Operational reliability showed improvement during the year, with 73% of flights operating on time in 2025, an increase of six percentage points compared to 2024. However, the CAA noted that punctuality levels still remain below pre-pandemic benchmarks, reflecting ongoing operational pressures across the aviation ecosystem. International travel demand remained concentrated on major leisure and business corridors. The most popular destinations from UK airports in 2025 were: Dublin Alicante Dubai Malaga Palma de Mallorca Among the fastest-growing routes, Milan Linate (+453,000 passengers), Krakow (+326,000), and Malta (+301,000) recorded the largest increases. Regional airport growth also remained strong, with Edinburgh (+8%), Liverpool (+11%), and Newcastle (+7%) leading year-on-year passenger increases. In addition to passenger growth, UK airports handled approximately 3 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, reflecting a 3% increase compared to 2024 and highlighting continued strength in air freight operations. Keir Mather, UK Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Minister, linked the growth to infrastructure priorities, stating, “A record year for passenger numbers underlines the importance of boosting airport capacity. Expansion will unlock more choice for passengers, create highly skilled jobs, and strengthen global connectivity.” From the airline industry, Tim Alderslade, Chief Executive of Airlines UK, said the data reinforces aviation’s economic role,“This data confirms aviation’s role as a growth engine for the UK economy… the desire to travel has never been greater.” Meanwhile, Karen Dee, Chief Executive of AirportsUK, emphasized the sector’s wider societal value, “It is great to see UK aviation continues to grow, enabling connectivity to global markets and supporting both business and leisure travel.” With demand continuing to surge, UK aviation has firmly moved beyond recovery into sustained growth, reinforcing its role as a critical pillar of economic activity and global connectivity. GLOBAL: AirlineRatings.com, a globally recognised authority on airline safety and product performance, has released its 2026 list of the world’s safest airlines, naming Etihad Airways of the United Arab Emirates as the world’s safest full-service airline and the first Gulf carrier to secure the top spot in the history of the rankings. The annual evaluation, published on 13 January 2026, assesses more than 320 global airlines using a comprehensive methodology that incorporates incident and accident rates adjusted for flight frequency, fleet age, pilot training, results from independent safety audits, and participation in turbulence prevention programmes. Etihad’s ascendancy to number one reflects a combination of factors, including a relatively young fleet, a crash-free operational history, advanced cockpit safety systems, and industry-leading turbulence management measures. According to AirlineRatings CEO Sharon Petersen, the statistical differences among the top carriers are extremely narrow, underscoring that all airlines in the Top 25 are world leaders in safety performance. Alongside Etihad’s top ranking, Emirates secured the fifth spot among full‑service airlines globally, reinforcing the UAE’s strong presence in aviation safety. Cathay Pacific of Hong Kong secured second place on the full-service list, followed by Australia’s Qantas in third. New Delhi, India: India’s aviation industry is bracing for a difficult FY2026, with ICRA estimating sector-wide losses to climb to Rs 95–105 billion, almost double the Rs 55 billion loss expected in FY2025. Softening passenger growth, upcoming fleet inductions and ongoing global and domestic disruptions are set to pressure financial performance. Even so, ICRA has maintained a stable outlook for the year, supported by steady travel demand, though influenced by cross-border tensions, accident-related caution and tariff-linked challenges on the commercial side. Domestic passenger traffic in October 2025 reached 142.8 lakh, up 4.5% from October 2024 and 12.9% higher than September 2025. Capacity deployment grew 1.7% year-on-year to 99,816 departures, with passenger load factor rising to 84.7%, compared with 82.4% a year earlier. For April–October 2025, domestic traffic stood at 944.5 lakh, a 1.6% year-on-year increase. ICRA expects full-year FY2026 domestic travel to grow 4–6%, reaching 172–176 million passengers. International traffic carried by Indian airlines rose 5.8% year-on-year in September 2025, touching 28.3 lakh, though sequentially down by 5.7%. In H1 FY2026, international traffic reached 175.6 lakh, marking 9.1% growth. ICRA projects further expansion of 13–15% in FY2026. Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) remains a key cost concern. ATF prices in November 2025 were 4.4% higher year-on-year and 0.8% higher month-on-month. FY2025 had seen average ATF prices fall to Rs 95,181 per KL, about 8% lower year-on-year, but recent months have reversed that relief. Fuel constitutes 30–40% of airline operating expenses, while 35–50% of major costs are dollar-linked. The rupee’s depreciation in Q2 FY2026 led to notable forex losses for several carriers, though most remain unrealised. Fleet shortages persist. Pratt & Whitney engine problems and broader supply-chain delays resulted in around 133 aircraft being grounded across various airlines by March 2025, representing 15–17% of total industry capacity. IndiGo had 70 aircraft grounded in March 2024 due to powder-metal contamination, which reduced to about 40 by September 2025. Go Airlines, hit by similar issues, eventually grounded half its fleet in FY2024 and suspended operations. These constraints have increased operating costs through replacement leases, poorer fuel efficiency and higher spot-rental rates. Despite strong PLFs and firmer yields, profitability remains limited. The industry’s interest coverage ratio is expected to remain at 1.5–1.7 times for FY2026. Large carriers benefit from parent backing, while others continue to face liquidity stress and stretched balance sheets. The DGCA has proposed new passenger-centric norms allowing customers to cancel or modify tickets within 48 hours of booking without charges, provided the travel date is beyond five days (domestic) or fifteen days (international). Refunds are to be processed within 21 working days.

The milestone was reached as Airbus delivered its 12,260th A320, surpassing Boeing’s 737, which has completed 12,254 deliveries worldwide. According to aviation consultancy Cirium, by 1988, when Airbus began producing its A320, Boeing had already built a strong lead with around 1,500 of its iconic 737 jets delivered. After nearly four decades, Airbus has finally caught up, with the A320 series surpassing Boeing as the world’s most-delivered commercial airliner. The A320’s success reflects Airbus’s strong focus on the single-aisle market and its ability to meet global airline demand for fuel-efficient, short- and medium-haul aircraft. The A320neo family, in particular, has contributed to this growth with modern engines and cabin upgrades that appeal to carriers across the globe. Boeing, meanwhile, continues to contend with the repercussions of past setbacks. The 737 MAX program faced a 20-month grounding following two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019, significantly affecting production and delivery schedules. Combined with ongoing supply chain constraints, these factors have slowed Boeing’s progress relative to Airbus. In September 2025, Boeing delivered 55 jets, including 40 737 MAX aircraft, bringing its year-to-date deliveries to 440. While this represents an improvement over the previous year, production limits and regulatory oversight continue to challenge the US manufacturer’s efforts to catch up with Airbus. As of October 11, 2025, Boeing's stock is trading at $210.73, reflecting a 7% decline over the past month. Despite this short-term volatility, the company has achieved a nearly 40% return over the past year, indicating strong long-term momentum. However, recent developments have brought Boeing's valuation into focus. Additionally, Turkish Airlines is reconsidering a substantial 737 MAX order due to ongoing engine supplier negotiations. These events have intensified scrutiny on Boeing's future prospects. Boeing's shares are trading below their fair value, with a fair value estimate of $252.57, indicating a potential upside from the current trading price. The company's expansion into high-margin, recurring-revenue offerings through Boeing Global Services, such as aftermarket services and parts distribution, positions it for more stable and resilient profitability. However, persistent production delays and reputational challenges could threaten Boeing's earnings recovery and weaken confidence in its long-term outlook.
