All passengers and crew were safely deboarded, and the alert was later confirmed to be false. The incident involved Flight AI2939, which departed from Indira Gandhi International Airport for Ahmedabad with around 170 people onboard. Moments after take-off, the cockpit crew received a smoke warning from the cargo compartment and immediately followed emergency safety procedures, aborting the climb and turning back to Delhi. The aircraft landed safely without any injuries or technical damage. Air India engineers conducted a detailed inspection after landing and found no trace of smoke or fire, confirming that the alert was a technical false indication. In an official statement, Air India said the flight crew acted strictly as per standard operating procedures and prioritised passenger safety. The airline arranged an alternate aircraft to ferry the affected passengers to Ahmedabad, resulting in a delay of approximately four hours. “Passenger safety is always our top priority. The draft policy includes a 48-hour free cancellation and amendment window and a stricter 21-day refund timeline for all flight bookings. According to the draft released by the DGCA, passengers will be allowed to cancel or modify their tickets within 48 hours of booking without paying any cancellation or change fee, provided that the scheduled departure is at least five days away for domestic flights and fifteen days for international flights. The proposed rules, currently open for stakeholder feedback, are designed to address frequent passenger complaints over steep cancellation fees, refund delays, and lack of transparency in ticket pricing. “This proposal aims to ensure greater transparency and passenger convenience by streamlining refund and cancellation processes,” DGCA Director General Faiz Ahmed Kidwai told The Times of India. Key Highlights of the Proposed Policy 48-Hour Free Cancellation: Passengers can cancel or modify flight bookings within two days of purchase without incurring airline-imposed penalties. Only fare differences, if applicable, will be charged. 21-Day Refund Deadline: Airlines will be required to process refunds within 21 working days, including tickets booked through travel agents or third-party portals. Transparency in Charges: Airlines must clearly disclose cancellation and rescheduling fees before ticket purchase and will not be allowed to impose additional “processing” or “administrative” fees. Refund of Taxes and Fees: Passengers cancelling unused or partially used tickets will be eligible for refunds on all applicable taxes, including user development and airport service charges. Medical and Emergency Cancellations: In the event of medical emergencies or death of a passenger, airlines will be encouraged to provide full refunds or offer credit shells without penalty. Applicability to Foreign Airlines: The DGCA clarified that these rules will also apply to foreign carriers operating flights to and from India, ensuring uniformity across operators. The move comes after growing dissatisfaction among travellers over high cancellation costs and delayed refunds, issues that surged during the pandemic period. Passenger-rights advocates have hailed the proposal as a progressive step toward improving consumer protection and restoring confidence in air travel. A senior airline executive, quoted by The Economic Times, said that while the policy may require operational adjustments, it will “ultimately help build passenger trust and promote advance bookings.” The DGCA has invited feedback from airlines, consumer bodies, and the public before finalising the rules. Once approved, the new provisions will be incorporated into the Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part IV, which governs refund and cancellation regulations in India. The incident occurred as the aircraft was on its final approach to runway touchdown in Chennai. Although the pilots reported no abnormalities in-flight, maintenance teams later discovered signs of impact damage believed to be from a bird strike. The airline subsequently cancelled the return leg to Colombo as a precautionary measure. Following standard safety procedures, Air India arranged an alternate aircraft to fly 137 passengers to Colombo later the same day. Engineers conducted detailed inspections on the affected aircraft after it was grounded for further assessment. A senior airline official told The New Indian Express that a visible mark was found on one of the engine blades during a detailed post-flight examination. “While there were no indications of mechanical issues during the flight, a precautionary inspection was initiated after landing. The aircraft has been withdrawn from service pending a thorough technical evaluation,” the official said. Initial checks in Colombo had reportedly found no visible damage, and the aircraft had been cleared for its scheduled return to India. However, after arrival in Chennai, maintenance teams noticed the engine impact and immediately grounded the plane for safety verification. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident to determine the sequence of events and assess the inspection process that initially cleared the aircraft in Colombo. The airline states that this decision follows a comprehensive review aimed at consolidating operations to enhance service reliability, especially with the introduction of new aircraft like the Airbus A220 and Q400 turboprops. In response, the Transport Workers Union (TWU) has strongly criticized the move, arguing that it prioritizes profits over people and will harm regional communities and staff stability. A survey conducted by the TWU, Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA), and the Australian Federation of Air Pilots (AFAP) found that 68% of affected pilots would need to consider other employment if the bases closed, with one in five already impacted by recent closures in Perth and Cairns. The closures come as QantasLink posted near-record profits of $2.39 billion. The airline was recently fined a record $90 million by the Federal Court for illegally outsourcing 1,800 ground workers. Despite the base closures, Qantas will continue to employ over 120 staff at its Hobart Contact Centre and plans to hire an additional 13 employees soon Political leaders, including Transport Minister Catherine King also criticized the closures, urging Qantas to reconsider and safeguard local jobs. New Delhi, India: SpiceJet, one of India’s leading low-cost carriers, has once again delayed salary payments for a significant portion of its workforce, According to the report by PTI senior employees who are earning above ₹55,000 per month are affected. While junior staff reportedly received their August salaries on time, senior employees, including Assistant Managers and above, are facing delays of up to 15 days, according to company sources. The airline has cited a “phased disbursement schedule” as the reason for the delay, stating that payments for higher-earning employees are staggered during lean periods. The delays affect a substantial number of employees, with the airline employing 6,484 staff, of whom 4,894 are permanent employees. Reports suggest that the salary delays predominantly impact employees in managerial and senior technical roles. These delays come at a time when the airline is navigating financial pressures, including a net loss of ₹238 crore reported in the June quarter of 2025. During 2024-25, SpiceJet provided an interest-free advance to Ajay Singh, who is the Chairman and Managing Director, an amount of Rs 32 crore for a five-year period in accordance with the Nomination and Remuneration Committee and board-approved policy of the company, as per the annual report. "The company has adjusted the advance from the salary of subsequent months (April and May 2025), as per the company's policy. Further, this advance is not prejudicial to the interest of the company," the report said. The Airline said that losses are mainly due to costs linked to several grounded aircrafts and expenses for bringing them back into service. It has only 21 aircraft operational out of 56 and 35 grounded. Employees impacted by the delayed payments have expressed concerns over financial planning, especially as the delayed salaries coincide with ongoing personal and household obligations. While junior employees received their payments on schedule, the staggered payments for senior staff have raised questions about employee morale and retention. Last September, the airline raised ₹3,000 crore through a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP), with plans to use the funds to operationalize grounded aircraft, purchase new planes, invest in technology, and enter new markets. Despite these intentions, progress has been slow, and a substantial number of aircraft remain grounded.

New Delhi, India: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, after an inspection revealed that the carrier had been using certain pilot training simulators without securing the necessary regulatory approval. According to DGCA officials, routine surveillance and compliance checks found that a few Airbus A320 Full Flight Simulators at IndiGo’s training facility were not in line with the mandatory certification standards under Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) for pilot training. These simulators are used for crucial functions such as type rating, recurrent training, and proficiency checks, all of which are mandatory for maintaining a pilot’s operational license. “The operator has been asked to explain why these devices were used for training and assessment without approval. This is a serious compliance lapse,” a senior DGCA official said on condition of anonymity. The notice gives the airline a period of seven days to respond, failing which the regulator may initiate enforcement action, including possible suspension of related training approvals. IndiGo, in an emailed statement to The Economic Times, acknowledged receiving the notice and confirmed it had “temporarily withdrawn the use of the identified simulators pending regulatory clearance.” The airline added that it is “fully cooperating with the DGCA to ensure that all training devices meet the required technical and regulatory standards.” This is not the first time the DGCA has tightened oversight on simulator usage in India’s civil aviation sector. In March 2024, the regulator grounded a simulator at another training organization over discrepancies in calibration, highlighting its zero-tolerance stance on safety compliance. Industry experts note that any gaps in simulator certification can have downstream effects on pilot preparedness and, by extension, flight safety. The DGCA has yet to announce whether further sanctions will be imposed on IndiGo. For now, the matter remains under review pending the airline’s formal response.
