London, United Kingdom: The United Kingdom’s aviation sector recorded its highest-ever annual passenger traffic in 2025, with 302 million passengers travelling through UK airports, according to official data released by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The figure represents a 2% year-on-year increase from 295 million passengers in 2024, confirming that the sector has not only recovered from the pandemic but has now surpassed previous historic peaks. Commenting on the record-breaking performance, Selina Chadha, Group Director for Consumers and Markets at the CAA, said, “It has never been more popular to fly, and 2025 was officially a record-breaking year. While the sector grows from strength to strength, we continue working with aviation partners to drive even higher safety standards and protect passengers when they fly.” The CAA noted that the milestone is significant, with total passenger volumes exceeding the combined populations of several major European countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands. The latest data highlights a sustained long-term expansion of UK aviation, with passenger numbers having tripled since 1989. Demand is expected to remain strong, supported by consumer sentiment. According to the regulator’s annual survey, 31% of respondents plan to fly more in the coming year, indicating continued upward momentum for the sector. Operational reliability showed improvement during the year, with 73% of flights operating on time in 2025, an increase of six percentage points compared to 2024. Regional airport growth also remained strong, with Edinburgh (+8%), Liverpool (+11%), and Newcastle (+7%) leading year-on-year passenger increases. In addition to passenger growth, UK airports handled approximately 3 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, reflecting a 3% increase compared to 2024 and highlighting continued strength in air freight operations. Keir Mather, UK Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Minister, linked the growth to infrastructure priorities, stating, “A record year for passenger numbers underlines the importance of boosting airport capacity. The airline confirmed the milestone in an official statement, noting that installations are progressing “ahead of schedule” across its long-haul fleet. The achievement places Qatar Airways among the world’s leaders in satellite-based onboard Wi-Fi adoption. According to the carrier, more than 30,000 flights have already operated with Starlink connectivity since the first installation in October 2024, offering uninterrupted gate-to-gate high-speed internet across six continents. Over 50 percent of Qatar Airways’ widebody fleet is now equipped, with the Boeing 777 programme fully completed and work on the Airbus A350 fleet advancing rapidly. Executives say the project is being executed at “record speed,” underscoring a strategic push to elevate Qatar Airways’ premium long-haul passenger experience. Built at a cost of around Rs 19,650 crore under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by the Adani Group, the airport is expected to ease congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and enhance the city’s position as a global aviation hub. Phase 1 of NMIA features Terminal 1 and Runway 1, equipped with 10 bus gates and 29 aero bridges. The facility is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually, with plans to expand capacity to 90 million in future phases. Its lotus-inspired architecture includes 12 sculptural columns resembling petals and 17 mega columns supporting the roof, reflecting India’s cultural heritage. Situated in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, about 37 kilometers from South Mumbai, NMIA is integrated with multimodal transport options, including metro, roadways, and public transport systems, ensuring seamless connectivity. The airport also hosts India’s largest aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities, positioning it as a major cargo and logistics hub. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the inauguration ceremony, alongside Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, highlighting the national importance of the project. Chief Minister Fadnavis announced that the first ticket issued from the airport would bear the name of the late D.B. Patil, a prominent farmer leader and legislator. Under the new system, most goods and services will attract either 5% or 18% GST, while select luxury and “sin” items will be taxed at 40%. For air travel, the changes are as follows: Economy class tickets: Continue at 5% GST, unchanged from previous rates. Premium economy, business, and first-class tickets: Previously taxed at 12% GST, these fares will now attract 18% GST, increasing the cost for premium travelers. For example, a business class ticket booked on September 4, 2025, for travel on September 24, 2025, will attract the old 12% GST, while the same ticket booked on or after September 23, 2025, will incur the new 18% GST. The Finance Ministry clarified under Section 14(a)(i) of the CGST Act, 2017, that GST liability is determined by the time of supply: If goods or services are supplied before the rate change but invoiced afterward, GST depends on the time of supply. Payment after the rate change: time of supply is the earlier of the invoice date or payment receipt date. Payment before the rate change: time of supply is the payment receipt date. The GST on private jets, helicopters, yachts, and pleasure vessels has increased from an effective 31% (28% GST + 3% cess) to a flat 40% GST, eliminating the cess and raising costs for high-end travelers and operators. According to PTI, The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expressed disappointment over the increase in GST on non-economy travel. “Aviation has significant potential to boost India’s economy, both through airline growth and improved connectivity. It is therefore disappointing to increase GST on non-economy travel without clear justification,” said Sheldon Hee, IATA’s Asia Pacific regional vice-president. He added that the tax on premium travel has more than doubled since 2017 and warned that such increases could dampen demand and affect airline profitability, especially since premium travelers often determine a route’s viability. Airlines are expected to pass on the higher GST to passengers, making premium tickets more expensive. Meanwhile, economy travelers benefit from stable fares, with GST unchanged at 5%. The revised structure aims to simplify taxation while ensuring that revenue from luxury and non-essential services contributes to public finances.
