Joby Aviation says the files included details on partnership agreements, regulatory strategies, vertiport infrastructure plans, and operational data related to its electric aircraft. A forensic review cited in the lawsuit found that Kivork allegedly emailed dozens of files to his personal account and altered permissions on hundreds more, enabling him to retain access after his departure. Joby Aviation argues that Archer later approached a strategic real-estate developer with insight drawn from the leaked information, attempting to outbid Joby’s existing agreement. According to a regulatory filing by InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) found the airline in breach of rules after it implemented a Standard Instrument Departure (SID) and Instrument Flight Procedure (IFP) that had been internally formulated by the company rather than issued by the Airport Authority of India (AAI), the only authorised body to publish such procedures. The DGCA stated that the airline’s actions violated Rule 133A of the Aircraft Rules, 1937, along with provisions of Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 9, Series C, Part I, specifically paragraphs 2.2 and 2.34, which mandate strict adherence to officially promulgated instrument procedures. InterGlobe confirmed that the communication from the DGCA was received on 17 November 2025. In its exchange filing, the company noted that the penalty would have “no material impact” on its operations or financial position. The latest tragedy claimed the lives of 26-year-old Indian trainee pilot Mayank Prajapati and 35-year-old South African pilot Martin Brown, reigniting serious concerns over safety standards, oversight, and accountability in the country’s flight-training industry. Both pilots were enrolled at Aviation Junction Flying School, based in Secunda, Mpumalanga. On 15 October 2025, they were flying separate Sling 2 training aircraft belonging to the flying school, Mayank Prajapati was flying ZU-PBD, while Martin Brown was operating ZU-PBC. He had earned his fixed-wing pilot licence around 18 months earlier through Aviation Junction Flying School. Both aircraft reportedly took off around the same time for routine training operations. Soon after departure, the two aircraft encountered poor weather, including heavy mist, drizzle, and low visibility, resulting in loss of radio and radar contact. Search and rescue teams later discovered the wreckage in separate areas of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, Brown’s ZU-PBC was found near Nottingham Road, while Prajapati’s ZU-PBD crashed closer to Pietermaritzburg. Brown’s body was recovered the following day, and Prajapati’s remains were transported to Pietermaritzburg Hospital for post-mortem formalities. The twin crashes have intensified calls for stronger oversight and safety reforms within South Africa’s flight-training industry. A family member of Mayank Prajapati speaking exclusively to Aviation Today, alleged that the accident resulted from air-traffic control (ATC) failures and unsafe training decisions. “The visibility that day was extremely poor, yet students were cleared to fly. A light aircraft en route to Wonderboom Airport lost contact and later was found crashed east of Pretoria (Cullinan). Authorities reported the deaths of the flight instructor and the trainee; initial accounts placed the aircraft on a routine general-aviation flight before the accident. February 2024 – Westonaria, Gauteng Province A Cessna 172K registered ZS-FJU operated by Sun Quest Trading under Part 141 training operations crashed during a training flight. Two occupants were killed, flight instructor and student pilot. While investigations into many of these crashes remain ongoing, aviation-safety experts say the pattern is alarming recurring training flights, small aircraft, and adverse-weather decisions. The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has been criticised for reactive oversight and limited enforcement capacity over smaller training schools, especially those operating older piston aircraft. The amendment, issued late last week, comes just months before the regulator’s new fatigue management norms under Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) 2024 are scheduled to take effect. Pilot associations, including the Airline Pilots’ Association of India (ALPA-India) and the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP), have urged the DGCA to immediately withdraw the extension, calling it “a dangerous precedent that undermines scientific fatigue management.” “This change ignores well-documented evidence linking fatigue with reduced alertness and safety margins, especially during long-haul night operations,” ALPA-India said in a statement. “The Boeing 787’s in-flight rest facilities are already inadequate due to seat recline restrictions, and any increase in flight duty time will directly affect pilot alertness.” The union referred to an FAA airworthiness directive that restricted the reclining function of cockpit rest seats on Boeing 787s, limiting proper rest opportunities for pilots during cruise segments. According to the DGCA’s assessment, covering the period from September 1, 2024, to August 31, 2025, none of the 35 evaluated flying schools achieved an “A+” or “A” grade. The rankings placed 13 FTOs in the ‘B’ category and 22 in ‘C’, indicating widespread gaps in operational efficiency, safety practices, and training quality. The grading framework classified institutions based on their overall performance: A+ (85% and above) A (70–84.99%) B (50–69.99%) C (below 50%) A senior ministry official said the upcoming review will focus on identifying systemic shortcomings and developing corrective measures. “The objective is to improve training quality and ensure that India’s flying schools meet international standards in safety, efficiency, and student outcomes,” the official stated. FTOs placed in the “C” category have been directed to undertake self-assessment exercises and submit improvement plans to the DGCA within a stipulated timeframe. The aviation regulator is expected to monitor compliance closely and provide targeted support to address performance deficiencies. Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu has emphasised that the ranking initiative aims to promote transparency and accountability within the pilot training ecosystem. New Delhi, India: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has directed Air India to carry out a comprehensive inspection of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) systems across its entire fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners. This action comes after an incident in which the RAT deployed automatically on one of the airline’s aircraft during landing in Birmingham, UK. Boeing has also requested that other 787 operators report any similar occurrences worldwide. The DGCA has specifically instructed Air India to verify the stowage integrity of the RAT in all aircraft where the Power Conditioning Module (PCM) was recently replaced. The Ram Air Turbine serves as an emergency backup system, providing hydraulic and electrical power if the aircraft’s main engines fail. It operates by using the aircraft’s forward motion to spin a small turbine that extends from the fuselage underside. This ensures critical flight control systems and avionics remain operational during emergencies, such as dual-engine failures or complete electrical system loss. Notably, the RAT deployed during the June 2025 crash of Air India flight AI171 after a dual-engine flameout at Ahmedabad, resulting in the loss of 260 lives. The recent directive stems from an October 4, 2025, incident involving Air India flight AI117, flying from Amritsar (ATQ) to Birmingham (BHX), where the RAT deployed automatically at around 500 feet during descent. The aircraft landed safely, with all electrical and hydraulic systems reportedly functioning normally. According to the DGCA advisory, “Air India has been advised to review the work package of ‘D’ Check for the actions required in view of the change of PCM module, for any discrepancies.” The regulator noted that the RAT is rarely activated during routine operations and is typically reserved for critical failures, making any uncommanded deployment a serious concern. Air India confirmed that despite the unexpected RAT deployment, all onboard systems were stable throughout the flight. Following the incident, the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) requested the DGCA to inspect the electrical systems on all Boeing 787s operating in India. In a letter, FIP President GS Randhawa highlighted that the Aircraft Health Monitoring (AHM) system had detected a fault in the Bus Power Control Unit (BPCU), which could have triggered the RAT deployment. The BPCU is essential for managing electrical power distribution, and any malfunction may activate backup systems. FIP emphasized that this incident points to potential systemic electrical vulnerabilities in the Boeing 787 and called for thorough inspections of all aircraft in the country. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu stated, “The DGCA is already on the job. Once we have more details, we will coordinate with the relevant stakeholders to ensure preventive measures are implemented and such incidents are avoided in the future.” The DGCA has extended its review beyond Air India, requesting Boeing to provide a detailed report on preventive measures and to share information on similar uncommanded RAT deployments globally in recent years.
