The Airbus A321neo was being vectored for an Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach when Muscat ATC instructed the crew to descend to 2,200 feet, identified by controllers as a minimum safe altitude suitable for sequencing and terrain clearance in that segment of airspace. The pilot responded that the airline’s company-approved navigation charts did not list 2,200 feet as an acceptable minimum altitude in that sector and that his flight crew could only descend to 3,600 feet in accordance with their procedures and published minimum vectoring altitudes (MVAs). In recorded ATC transmissions that have circulated within aviation safety analysis communities, the exchange became tense as the pilot repeatedly stated he was “unable to accept vectors” below the charted limit. The controller, while asserting that “our minimum safe altitude is 2,200,” urged the flight crew to comply with ATC instructions. Despite the firm tone in radio exchanges, both sides maintained professional conduct, and the disagreement did not escalate into an unsafe operational situation. The pilot proposed alternative vectors that would allow the aircraft to remain at or above 3,600 feet while aligning for the approach sequence. Minimum vectoring altitude and minimum safe altitude figures are critical safety parameters that provide required terrain and obstacle clearance during radar vectoring. Air traffic controllers and pilots derive these altitudes from different sources controllers from their local surveillance and obstacle databases, and pilots from company-approved charts often supplied by third-party aeronautical data providers. International aviation regulations and standard operating procedures emphasise that the pilot in command retains ultimate responsibility for the safety of the aircraft. When an ATC-issued clearance conflicts with a pilot’s verified safety limits, the flight crew may lawfully decline and request clarification or alternative instructions. The Turkish Airlines aircraft remained at or above the altitude the crew could accept until it was safely established on the final approach. There were no reported safety incidents, and the flight landed without further operational disruption.

Kochi, India: An Air India Express flight operating from Jeddah to Kozhikode made an emergency landing at Kochi’s Cochin International Airport on Thursday after a suspected landing gear tyre failure was detected mid-flight, airport and airline officials confirmed. The Boeing 737 aircraft was diverted to Kochi as a precaution after the flight crew received an alert indicating a technical issue related to the landing gear. Emergency response protocols were immediately activated at the airport, and the aircraft landed safely without incident. All passengers and crew disembarked safely, with no injuries reported. Airport authorities said fire and rescue services were deployed along the runway as part of standard safety measures. Post-landing inspections confirmed damage to one of the aircraft’s tyres, following which the aircraft was grounded for detailed technical checks. Air India Express said passenger safety remained its top priority and that alternative arrangements were made to transport passengers to Kozhikode. Some passengers were accommodated on subsequent flights, while others were transported by road. Operations at Kochi airport continued normally after a brief precautionary disruption. JetBlue Flight B6-1112, operated by an Airbus A320, was climbing after departure from Curaçao, a Dutch Caribbean island near the Venezuelan coast, when the flight crew reported a U.S. Air Force air-to-air refueling tanker crossing directly into their flight path at a similar altitude. Air traffic control recordings indicate the commercial jet halted its ascent to maintain separation. In audio released by air traffic control, the JetBlue pilot is heard saying, “We almost had a midair collision up here,” adding that the tanker aircraft had “passed directly in our flight path … they don’t have their transponder turned on.” The absence of a functioning transponder meant the military aircraft was not visible on civilian radar systems, complicating the air traffic controller’s ability to track it. The flight crew followed established safety procedures to avoid the tanker and later reported the incident to federal aviation authorities. In December 2022, during a severe winter storm, Southwest cancelled nearly 17,000 flights, leaving over 2 million passengers stranded across the United States. The airline’s crew-rescheduling and operations control systems collapsed under pressure. In December 2023, after a formal investigation, DOT imposed a record-breaking US$ 140 million civil penalty on the airline, the largest fine ever issued by the agency to a U.S. carrier for consumer-protection violations. The settlement included US$ 35 million payable to the U.S. Treasury, with the balance to be covered through credits and compensation to affected customers. Southwest had already made two payments of US$ 12 million each in early 2024 and early 2025. The remaining US$ 11 million was scheduled for payment by January 31, 2026. In its updated consent order, DOT cited “significantly improved on-time performance and completion factor” demonstrated by Southwest, attributing this turnaround to the airline’s substantial investments in modernizing its operations. According to DOT, these improvements justified crediting the remaining US$ 11 million rather than demanding payment. Southwest reportedly invested more than US$ 1 billion since the 2022 crisis to upgrade its internal systems, enhance crew scheduling and tracking capabilities, and overhaul its network operations. DOT said the waiver is in the “public interest,” arguing that incentivising airlines to improve reliability and resilience ultimately benefits consumers more than simply collecting a monetary penalty. In a statement, Southwest expressed gratitude, noting that the last two years saw an “operational turnaround” that delivered better on-time performance and lower cancellation rates, directly benefiting passengers.

New Delhi, India: In a decisive move to tackle widespread flight cancellations by IndiGo, the Ministry of Civil Aviation announced on 5th December, 2025 that certain Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) enforced by the DGCA have been placed in abeyance with immediate effect. The temporary suspension aims to restore airline operations, relieve passenger distress, and maintain safety standards. IndiGo, India’s largest domestic carrier, cancelled over 1,000 flights across its network over the past five days, affecting major airports including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Hyderabad. On Friday, 5 December, nearly 400 flights were cancelled in a single day, disrupting travel for thousands of passengers. Previously, media reports estimated that cumulative cancellations during the multi-day disruption crossed the 550 flight mark nationwide. The airline’s on-time performance (OTP) fell sharply to 8.5%, 19.7% on Wednesday, 35% of the IndiGo flights operated on time on Tuesday, down from 67.7% in November 2025 before FDTL enforcement. The disruption was triggered by DGCA’s revised Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms, aimed at reducing pilot fatigue and enhancing safety. The stricter Phase 2, effective from 1 November 2025, mandates 48 hours of weekly rest, limits consecutive night duties, and caps night landings and duty extensions The official PIB statement highlighted that the abeyance of FDTL rules is “urgent and proactive” and undertaken “solely in the interest of passengers,” particularly seniors, students, patients, and travellers dependent on timely air services. The government has mandated: Immediate restoration of flight schedules, with normal operations expected within three days. Airlines provide real-time updates, automatic refunds for cancellations, hotel accommodation for stranded passengers, and special assistance for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. A 24×7 control room to monitor airline operations and coordinate corrective measures. A high-level inquiry to examine the causes of the disruption, determine accountability, and recommend preventive measures. While safety-driven, these rules exposed gaps in crew availability, particularly for an airline of IndiGo’s scale. The airline had notified regulators about challenges in roster planning and pilot availability, prompting the government’s intervention. What the Abeyance Means The abeyance is temporary and does not repeal FDTL rules; safety remains a priority. Airlines are expected to take operational measures, including flexible crew rostering, to restore service reliability without compromising pilot rest and safety standards. DGCA will conduct ongoing reviews to ensure compliance and implement corrective actions. Passengers affected between 3–6 December 2025 are eligible for full refunds or rescheduling. The flight, operating as United Airlines Flight UA949, departed London Heathrow Airport for San Francisco International Airport on December 4. Around 90 minutes after takeoff, while cruising over northern airspace, the crew detected a possible technical issue linked to a brake-temperature sensor along with reports of a burning smell inside the cabin. Following standard emergency procedures, the pilots declared a general emergency (squawk 7700) and diverted the aircraft to the nearest suitable airport. The Boeing 777-200ER, registered N74007, landed safely at Edinburgh Airport at approximately 4:35 p.m. local time. Emergency services were positioned on standby as a precaution, but no injuries were reported among the passengers or crew. A total of 162 passengers and 12 crew members were on board at the time of the diversion. United Airlines confirmed the safe landing and said that passengers were provided hotel accommodation and rebooked on alternative flights to continue their journeys. On 28 November 2025 a Emirates Airbus A380‑842 at Manchester Airport (UK) was struck by a fuel‑truck while parked at a gate, during routine turnaround after arrival from Dubai. The collision damaged the cowling of the engine intake though there was no fuel leak, fire or injuries and forced cancellation of the return flight EK18 to Dubai. The aircraft remained grounded for inspections and repairs, and took off again on 30 November for flight EK20 to Dubai, signalling the damage was deemed repairable.
