Vietnam Airlines plans to take delivery of the Boeing 737-8 jets between 2030 and 2032. With this expansion, the carrier projects its total fleet will grow to approximately 151 aircraft by 2030, strengthening its ability to serve high-traffic domestic and short-haul international routes. The airline’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Đặng Ngọc Hòa, said the investment underscores a “comprehensive and forward-looking” approach to fleet modernization, financial resilience, and human resource development. He emphasized that the new aircraft will enhance “operational performance and service standards” while deepening the airline’s long-standing partnership with Boeing. The Boeing 737-8 is Boeing’s most versatile narrow-body jet, featuring advanced aerodynamics, CFM International LEAP-1B engines and next-generation winglets that deliver about 20 % better fuel efficiency and lower emissions than older aircraft models. Each jet can accommodate up to 200 passengers with a range of up to 6,570 km (approximately 3,550 nautical miles), making it suitable for VN’s dense short- and medium-haul market segments. Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stephanie Pope said the 737-8 will support Vietnam Airlines as it aligns the 737 MAX family with its existing Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet to enhance connectivity across Asia. Vietnam’s aviation market continues to expand rapidly, driven by robust economic growth and increasing mobility across Southeast Asia. Vietnam Airlines aims to maintain double-digit annual growth in key performance indicators, including passenger and cargo traffic, over the next five years. Industry analysts note that the addition of the 737-8 will diversify Vietnam Airlines’ fleet, which currently consists primarily of Airbus A320 family aircraft in the narrowbody segment and Boeing 787 Dreamliners on long-haul services. The Boeing order is part of a flurry of aerospace contracts signed by Vietnamese carriers in Washington this week. In related deals, Sun PhuQuoc Airways committed to purchasing 40 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners in a US$22.5 billion agreement, and Vietjet Air finalised financing for six Boeing 737-8 aircraft. Vietnam Airlines is also in negotiations with Boeing for an additional 30 wide-body jets worth up to US$12 billion, aimed at bolstering its long-haul international network.

Hanoi, Vietnam: Vietnam’s aviation industry is solidly recovering from the pandemic downturn, with sustained increases in passenger and cargo traffic this year and projections pointing toward double-digit growth in 2026. The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) projects that total passenger throughput for 2025 will reach approximately 84 million, an 11.4% rise over 2024, while air cargo is expected to finish the year at around 1.4 million tonnes. Domestic and international travel continue to expand, reflecting strengthening demand both within Vietnam and from abroad. Passenger volume figures show significant gains across the year: data from the first nine months of 2025 estimate about 64.1 million passengers transported and 1.1 million tonnes of cargo, up 10.7% and 18.7% year-on-year, respectively. The recovery is consistent with earlier data showing a strong first half of the year, when total air passengers reached 41.3 million, recording 10% growth compared with the same period in 2024. New airport initiatives are also underway in secondary regions, such as the civil aviation component for Phan Thiet Airport, approved with significant public investment to serve rising passenger demand in the south-central region. Vietnam’s broader economic resilience bolsters aviation growth. Robust tourism demand and rising consumer travel have contributed to consistent increases in airline traffic. Analysts also note that the return of international markets including resumed flights to Russia and expanded Asian connections is supporting sustained expansion. Market forecasts suggest the sector’s long-term potential remains strong, with industry research forecasting overall passenger and cargo demand to continue rising through 2030. Vietnam’s position within the Southeast Asian aviation market, already among the fastest-growing in the region, is expected to strengthen further as international connectivity increases and infrastructure improves. Despite robust growth, the industry faces operational and capacity challenges. On-time performance and cancellations have drawn scrutiny due to schedule disruptions, while some airports operate beyond designed traffic capacity. Safety and security have also been highlighted as policy priorities. Recent directives from the Prime Minister’s office emphasize that aviation safety systems must meet stringent international standards amid rapid expansion. Building on 2025’s gains, market analysts and CAAV projections suggest that Vietnam’s aviation industry is poised for double-digit growth next year, with passenger numbers and cargo volumes set to expand further as international demand normalizes and new routes come online. New Delhi, India: India’s youngest airline, Akasa Air, has completed three years of commercial operations and unveiled plans to expand its international footprint into South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region in the coming years. The Mumbai-based carrier, which operated its maiden flight on August 7, 2022, has grown into a network covering 28 destinations, 23 domestic and five international cities, including Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Doha, Riyadh, and Jeddah. The airline said it aims to leverage upcoming infrastructure at Navi Mumbai International Airport and Noida International Airport to deepen its domestic network and support long-haul regional routes. Akasa Air has carried more than 19 million passengers since inception, including over 8 million in the last 12 months alone. The airline has recorded a consistent load factor above 87 percent and completed over 100,000 departures more than 3,800 of which were international flights. In addition, the carrier has transported over 131,000 tonnes of cargo and secured partnerships with more than 1,150 corporate clients. The airline currently operates a fleet of 30 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in 189- and 197-seat configurations. Orders include additional Boeing 737 MAX 8, MAX 200, and MAX 10 aircraft, which will be inducted over the next several years. Speaking to The Times of India Akasa Air founder and chief executive officer Vinay Dube said Boeing’s production output is “gradually returning to its historic production strength” after a prolonged slowdown, adding that this will allow the airline to receive deliveries on schedule and support its growth strategy. In the financial year ending March 2025, Akasa Air reported a 49 percent year-on-year increase in revenue and a 48 percent rise in available seat kilometres. The airline has set a target of increasing capacity by over 30 percent in the current fiscal year. The carrier also entered into a codeshare agreement with Etihad Airways in March 2025, enabling passengers to book combined itineraries across both networks. The partnership is expected to strengthen connectivity to the Middle East and beyond, while providing a platform for future route expansions into Southeast Asia. Industry analysts note that Akasa’s measured but ambitious growth contrasts with the more aggressive early expansions attempted by some of its predecessors in India’s low-cost segment. With South and Southeast Asia’s aviation markets projected to grow significantly in the next decade, Akasa Air’s entry into these regions could place it in direct competition with established carriers such as AirAsia, Batik Air, SriLankan Airlines, and Malindo Air. The airline’s leadership maintains that its strategy focuses on disciplined growth and service quality. Akasa Air’s third anniversary underscores its rapid ascent in India’s aviation sector, driven by operational efficiency, prudent fleet expansion, and targeted market entry.
