Incheon, South Korea: South Korea’s Incheon International Airport has become the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic for the first time, handling about 38.39 million international passengers in the first half of 2026, according to preliminary Airports Council International data reported on August 13. Incheon International Airport has emerged as the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic, overtaking Dubai’s previous No. 1 position. The latest result represents a major change in the ranking. ACI’s 2025 international passenger ranking placed Dubai first, Heathrow second and Incheon third. The organisation’s July 2026 airport ranking resource likewise listed Dubai as the busiest airport for international passengers based on the latest completed annual dataset. The new Incheon result therefore represents a preliminary H1 2026 shift rather than a completed annual ranking. The ranking shift was partly linked to major changes in global air travel caused by the US-Iran conflict. The disruption weakened the role of Middle Eastern transfer hubs, particularly Dubai, prompting some passengers travelling between Europe and Asia to reroute through Incheon. Dubai’s international passenger traffic fell from 7.4 million in February to 2.5 million in March before recovering to 4.7 million by June. Incheon recorded 4.24 million transfer passengers during the first six months, an 18.1% increase from the same period a year earlier. Transfer traffic on European routes rose 63.2% to about 210,000 passengers, highlighting the shift in connecting traffic toward the South Korean hub. The airport also benefited from stronger tourism demand. Foreign travellers accounted for a record 44.4% of Incheon’s total passenger traffic in the second quarter, with growing visitor flows from markets including China and Japan contributing to the increase. Infrastructure and connectivity have also strengthened Incheon’s position. The airport’s expansion programme has raised its annual passenger-handling capacity to 106 million. It currently serves 101 airlines and 183 cities in 53 countries when passenger and cargo operations are included, while passenger services connect Incheon with 158 international destinations. That compares with 139 international destinations served by Hong Kong, 92 by Shanghai Pudong and 86 by Tokyo Narita, according to the latest reports. The airport opened in 2001 and completed its latest major expansion in 2024. Its growing international network has allowed it to absorb additional connecting traffic while maintaining its position as a major Northeast Asian hub. Incheon International Airport Corporation Acting President Kim Beom-ho credited government support, the public and airport employees for the achievement. He said the airport would continue pursuing service innovation and improving connectivity with regional airports. Kim said: “We’re grateful for the government’s support, the public’s encouragement” and the efforts of airport personnel. The corporation said it plans to strengthen passenger convenience while pursuing service innovation, artificial-intelligence transformation and infrastructure for urban air mobility. It also plans to expand links between Incheon and regional airports as South Korea seeks to increase inbound tourism and improve overseas travel access for passengers outside the Seoul metropolitan area.

The flight, cleared for departure from Runway 07R shortly after 21:00 UTC, taxied toward the runway but instead turned onto a parallel taxiway (identified as E1/V1) and began accelerating as if commencing a normal departure. Flightradar24 data shows the aircraft reached approximately 107 knots (around 198 km/h) before the crew recognised the error and aborted the takeoff, applying heavy braking and reverse thrust to bring the aircraft to a stop near the end of the taxiway and adjacent grassy area. All 135 passengers and crew disembarked safely, and there are no reported injuries. Airport fire and rescue services assisted passengers, who were later rebooked onto alternate flights to Copenhagen. SAS’s Head of Communications, Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji, confirmed the incident to Danish broadcaster TV 2, stating that the flight from Brussels to Copenhagen was canceled due to an “irregularity.” She confirmed the airline’s account of an aborted departure and that passengers were accommodated on subsequent services. Belgian civil aviation authorities have initiated a formal investigation into the circumstances that led to the aircraft taking the wrong surface for departure. Investigators will review air traffic control communications, flight crew procedures, and airport surface signage and lighting, particularly given the complex layout of taxiways and runways at one of Europe’s busiest hubs. The taxiway departures are rare and emphasise the importance of rigorous cross-checks by flight crews and air traffic controllers to ensure correct runway alignment before high-speed acceleration. Mumbai, India: Two commercial aircraft operating at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) were involved in a ground collision involving their wingtips on Tuesday evening, prompting inspections and an immediate probe by aviation authorities. All passengers and crew onboard both flights were unharmed, officials confirmed. The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 pm IST when Air India flight AI 2732, bound for Coimbatore, was taxiing for departure and the IndiGo flight 6E 791 had just landed from Hyderabad and was taxiing toward the terminal. Both aircraft involved were narrow-body Airbus A320s. According to Air India, the right wingtip of its aircraft made contact with the wingtip of the IndiGo aircraft while maneuvering on the taxiway prior to taking off. The airline said the contact resulted in damage to its aircraft’s wingtip, and the aircraft was immediately grounded for technical checks as a precautionary measure. All passengers were safely deplaned, and ground teams began arranging alternative onward travel. IndiGo released a separate statement confirming that the wingtip of its aircraft operating flight 6E 791 touched the wing of another airline’s aircraft while taxiing after landing. The airline said all passengers disembarked safely, and its aircraft is undergoing maintenance inspection in line with standard protocols. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) dispatched a team from its Mumbai office to the site soon after the incident. DGCA officials confirmed both aircraft returned to their respective bays and were taken out of service pending inspection. The regulator has initiated an inquiry to determine the factors leading to the collision, focusing on ground vehicle and aircraft movement controls at the busy international airport. “No injuries have been reported among passengers or crew,” according to civil aviation sources, highlighting that the low-speed nature of the taxiing incident limited the impact to aircraft structures rather than human safety. The airport, which operates parallel runways and heavy traffic movements daily, did not report any significant disruptions to other flights following the incident. Authorities said that routine operations continued while the affected aircraft were inspected.

Washington, United States: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has officially lifted its emergency order requiring airlines to cut scheduled flights at 40 major U.S. airports, ending one of the most disruptive regulatory measures imposed during the recent 43-day government shutdown. The mandate will cease at 6 a.m. ET on Monday, November 17, restoring normal operations for domestic carriers. The flight-reduction order introduced as air-traffic control staffing deteriorated during the shutdown initially authorized cuts of up to 10 percent across the affected airports. Airlines, however, rarely executed the full reductions, opting instead to maintain most of their schedules even as the FAA warned of fatigue-related risks inside control towers. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the agency removed the restrictions after “a sustained, measurable decline” in staffing-triggered incidents and absenteeism. He added that the system is now “stable enough” to resume full commercial operations. Before its termination, the FAA had gradually eased the mandate, lowering the required cuts from 10 percent to 6 percent on November 13, and then to 3 percent on November 14 as more controllers returned to duty following the shutdown’s end. Despite the emergency order, disruptions remained lower than expected. Aviation analytics firm Cirium reported cancellations on Sunday at just 0.25 percent below typical rates for this time of year raising questions about how strictly carriers followed the FAA’s directives. Airlines, which had argued the cuts were excessive, welcomed the full rollback. The removal of constraints also reinstates standard allowances for general aviation and space-launch operations previously curtailed at select airports. The shutdown’s impact on the air-traffic workforce remains a concern. Industry officials say the FAA is still roughly 3,500 controllers short of its staffing goals, a gap that magnified the shutdown’s effect and prompted the emergency mandate. With the order now lifted, major hub airports including those serving New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Atlanta are expected to return to normal scheduling patterns from Monday onward.
