The unions representing both groups, the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) and the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) voted in favour of revised collective bargaining agreements that will lower key compensation elements and generate approximately $100 million in annual savings, Spirit and union representatives said. Under the terms of the new pilot deal, hourly pay rates will be reduced by about 8 per cent, and employer retirement contributions will be cut in half from 16 per cent to 8 per cent for 2026 and 2027. The agreement also includes scheduled pay restorations, a 4 per cent increase beginning in August 2028 and another 4 per cent in January 2029 contingent on future financial performance. The flight attendants’ agreement preserves base wages and healthcare benefits while reducing incentive overtime pay and eliminating ground holding pay. Changes to overtime thresholds are slated to take effect from mid-2027. Under the revised terms, Spirit will receive $50 million immediately to cover day-to-day expenses, with another $50 million available once it advances plans to either reorganize as a standalone carrier or pursue a sale. Union leaders framed the votes as a strategic choice to keep control of labour terms rather than leave decisions to the bankruptcy court. Ballots were also structured to allow employees to retain their contracts’ core protections and to enable “snapback” of concessions if predefined financial targets are met. Spirit filed for Chapter 11 protection for the second time in a year in August, citing continued losses and cash-flow challenges. The carrier has said it expects to operate at a loss through 2027 and has pursued various cost-cutting measures, including workforce reductions, network cuts and fleet adjustments, to conserve cash. "We continue to provide high-value travel options that benefit American consumers whether they fly with us or not, and look forward to welcoming our guests throughout the holiday season and beyond," CEO Dave Davis said in a statement. The labour agreements still require approval from the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York before they take full effect. The company filed paperwork with the court on Dec. 11 seeking authorisation for the revised contracts. The votes come amid broader operational challenges for Spirit. Earlier restructuring moves included furloughs of flight attendants and pilots, reductions in flight schedules, and the scrapping of further planned pilot furloughs after updated attrition modeling. Spirit has also secured emergency financing to support operations through the holiday travel season and beyond while continuing its restructuring efforts. As the Chapter 11 process continues, analysts say the labour concessions and financial lifelines are crucial to maintaining service and preserving the airline’s viability in a competitive US market characterised by rising costs and stiff competition from larger carriers.

Blue Islands whose fleet consisted of ATR 72 turboprops grounded its aircraft as staff and passengers learned of the closure late on Friday. In its media statement the carrier said it regretted the disruption and advised customers with bookings to contact their booking agent or payment provider for refunds and further guidance. The airline also referred passengers with codeshare bookings to the partner carrier named on their ticket. Local authorities in the Channel Islands said they were urgently assessing the fallout for passengers and staff. The collapse said Blue Islands’ decision followed unsuccessful attempts to secure a last-minute financial lifeline. Reports indicate the Government of Jersey had been unable to provide further support, leaving the airline with no viable option but to suspend operations. Regional operators moved quickly to plug gaps left by Blue Islands. Loganair announced it would operate flights on several former Blue Islands routes and offer special “rescue fares” to help stranded travellers, with services planned between Jersey, Guernsey and key UK airports from as early as the weekend following the suspension. Aurigny and other operators also confirmed they were coordinating to provide additional capacity where possible. Passengers affected by cancellations were advised by the airline and local broadcasters not to travel to airports unless they had confirmed onward travel. Those seeking refunds were told to contact the company they booked through or their card issuer. Industry guidance also suggested passengers on package holidays contact their tour operator. Blue Islands’ collapse comes amid a turbulent period for small regional carriers in the UK market, following other recent failures that have reduced seat capacity on short-haul and island routes. Analysts say a combination of rising operating costs, labour pressures and thin margins for short regional sectors has left several carriers exposed. The immediate priorities for governments and airports will be to restore reliable services for island communities and to manage the economic and employment impact.

The airline said the move marks a major milestone in its ongoing digital overhaul aimed at streamlining airport processes, cutting costs and reducing paper waste. The shift was originally scheduled for 3 November but was pushed to 12 November to avoid peak mid-term travel. From now on, passengers checking in for any Ryanair flight must use the myRyanair mobile app, which generates the only accepted boarding pass format. Ryanair said the first day of the rollout was “a huge success,” with more than 700 flights departing by mid-day and over 98% of passengers using digital passes without issues. The remaining 2%, mostly travellers unable to load the app, were issued printed passes at airport desks free of charge, provided they had already checked in online. CMO Dara Brady said customer feedback was “universally positive” and the digital system helped speed up security and boarding processes. Ryanair confirmed that printed boarding passes will no longer be accepted at any airport unless local regulations require them. Exemptions remain in specific markets such as Morocco, Tirana (Albania) until March 2026. Passengers who lose phone access after checking in due to battery failure or device issues will receive a printed pass at the airport at no additional charge. According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), the levy will apply to tickets issued from April 1, 2026, for flights departing on or after October 1, 2026. The collected funds will be channelled into purchasing sustainable aviation fuel, helping airlines transition away from fossil-based jet fuel. Under the new system, passengers will pay different levy rates depending on destination zones and cabin classes: Band 1 – Southeast Asia: Economy S$1 | Premium S$4 Band 2 – Northeast Asia, South Asia, Australia & Papua New Guinea: Economy S$2.80 | Premium S$11.20 Band 3 – Africa, Europe, Middle East, Pacific Islands, Central & West Asia: Economy S$6.40 | Premium S$25.60 Band 4 – The Americas: Economy S$10.40 | Premium S$41.60 Transit passengers passing through Singapore will be exempt from the levy. The scheme will also cover cargo operators, business aviation, and general aviation flights, which will pay a SAF contribution based on aircraft weight or cargo load. CAAS stated that the initiative is a market-based mechanism designed to accelerate the uptake of SAF in a cost-effective and transparent manner. The authority said the levy would make the cost of cleaner fuel predictable for airlines and travellers while ensuring funds are ring-fenced for SAF purchases. “The SAF levy is a key part of Singapore’s decarbonisation framework for aviation. It enables us to make steady progress towards our targets while maintaining competitiveness as a global air hub,” CAAS said in a statement. Singapore’s aviation decarbonisation roadmap targets at least 1 % SAF usage by 2026, increasing to 3 %–5 % by 2030, depending on supply availability and cost developments. The levy rates could be adjusted in future as the SAF blend ratio rises. Globally, sustainable aviation fuel remains more expensive than conventional jet fuel typically costing two to five times more but is widely regarded as the most immediate tool to cut aviation’s carbon footprint. Singapore’s move follows similar measures adopted in the European Union and Japan, and could set a precedent for other Asian hubs exploring SAF mandates or incentives. The initiative complements broader efforts under the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) CORSIA framework, which aims for net-zero carbon emissions from international aviation by 2050. By creating a structured and transparent levy system, Singapore aims to send a clear demand signal to fuel producers and investors, potentially attracting SAF production and supply-chain projects to the region.

The government is now taking new steps to reduce the problem around airports. Deputy Prime Minister and Civil Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka told Parliament that the airline reported 41 bird strike cases in 2024, compared with 33 in 2023 and 24 in 2022. Four Boeing 737 aircraft were grounded last year after bird strikes, costing the airline about US $19.2 million, while another engine incident this year caused an extra US $4.8 million loss. A major incident took place on October 9, 2025, when Fiji Airways flight FJ450 from Christchurch to Nadi hit a flock of pigeons during take-off. The impact damaged the aircraft’s nose, wings, and both engines. The pilots safely returned to Christchurch Airport. Industry data shows that bird strikes have already cost Fiji Airways more than US $8.4 million in 2024 alone. These costs include repairs, grounded aircraft, and flight delays. Fiji Airports has started a Wildlife Hazard Management Program to stop birds from gathering near runways. This includes mapping bird habitats within five kilometres of airports, using bird deterrent systems, and training airport staff to handle wildlife safely. A new National Wildlife Hazard Management Committee has also been set up to bring together airport operators, environment officials, and local governments. The committee will coordinate actions to reduce bird strike risks across the country. Minister Gavoka said poor waste management, open drains, and fruit trees near airports attract birds. He urged local councils to improve waste control and restrict land use that encourages bird activity. “Safety is our top priority,” Gavoka told Parliament. “We must protect our people and our aircraft from unnecessary danger.” Experts say Fiji’s geography makes bird strikes harder to prevent, as many airports are close to the coast and farmland. Open garbage areas and food waste around Nadi and Nausori airports also draw more birds. Bird strikes usually happen during take-off or landing, when planes are flying low. Even small birds can cause major damage if they hit engines or wings. Authorities are now looking at advanced tools such as bird-detection radar, sound-based deterrents, and public education programs to reduce the risk. Communities living near airports will be asked to help by keeping waste areas clean and avoiding bird feeding near flight paths. Despite the losses, Fiji Airways says safety standards remain high and no passengers or crew have been injured in recent incidents. However, officials agree the issue needs urgent attention to protect both passengers and aircraft.
