The deal, witnessed by senior Vietnamese and U.S. officials, marks Vietnam Airlines’ first direct narrowbody acquisition from Boeing and represents a cornerstone of its long-term strategy to expand domestic and regional operations amid rising air travel demand. Vietnam Airlines plans to take delivery of the Boeing 737-8 jets between 2030 and 2032. With this expansion, the carrier projects its total fleet will grow to approximately 151 aircraft by 2030, strengthening its ability to serve high-traffic domestic and short-haul international routes. The airline’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Đặng Ngọc Hòa, said the investment underscores a “comprehensive and forward-looking” approach to fleet modernization, financial resilience, and human resource development. He emphasized that the new aircraft will enhance “operational performance and service standards” while deepening the airline’s long-standing partnership with Boeing. The Boeing 737-8 is Boeing’s most versatile narrow-body jet, featuring advanced aerodynamics, CFM International LEAP-1B engines and next-generation winglets that deliver about 20 % better fuel efficiency and lower emissions than older aircraft models. Each jet can accommodate up to 200 passengers with a range of up to 6,570 km (approximately 3,550 nautical miles), making it suitable for VN’s dense short- and medium-haul market segments. Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stephanie Pope said the 737-8 will support Vietnam Airlines as it aligns the 737 MAX family with its existing Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet to enhance connectivity across Asia. Vietnam’s aviation market continues to expand rapidly, driven by robust economic growth and increasing mobility across Southeast Asia. Vietnam Airlines aims to maintain double-digit annual growth in key performance indicators, including passenger and cargo traffic, over the next five years. Industry analysts note that the addition of the 737-8 will diversify Vietnam Airlines’ fleet, which currently consists primarily of Airbus A320 family aircraft in the narrowbody segment and Boeing 787 Dreamliners on long-haul services. The Boeing order is part of a flurry of aerospace contracts signed by Vietnamese carriers in Washington this week. In related deals, Sun PhuQuoc Airways committed to purchasing 40 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners in a US$22.5 billion agreement, and Vietjet Air finalised financing for six Boeing 737-8 aircraft. Vietnam Airlines is also in negotiations with Boeing for an additional 30 wide-body jets worth up to US$12 billion, aimed at bolstering its long-haul international network.

Reykjavík, Iceland: Icelandic budget airline Play Airlines has announced the immediate suspension of all flights and the cessation of its operations on September 29, 2025. The unexpected shutdown has left roughly 1,750 passengers stranded at destinations across Europe and North America. The airline cited ongoing financial difficulties, declining ticket sales, and internal operational challenges as the main reasons behind the abrupt closure. Around 500 employees have lost their jobs due to the closure, including pilots, cabin crew, and administrative staff. Play Airlines has stated that it is working to provide guidance and support to its workforce during the transition. Founded in 2019 by former executives of WOW Air and Primera Air, Play Airlines launched operations in 2021 with the goal of offering affordable transatlantic flights connecting Reykjavik’s Keflavík International Airport with European and North American cities. While the airline initially gained traction among price-sensitive travelers, it struggled to maintain profitability amid intense competition and rising operational costs. Until Monday morning, Play Airlines operated flights to several European cities such as London Stansted, Amsterdam, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Alicante, and Faro. The final flight from Reykjavik to Stansted landed on time at 10:40 a.m. on Monday. However, the aircraft remains at the airport, and the scheduled return flight to Reykjavik has been cancelled. PLAY Airlines’ shutdown was driven by mounting financial losses that proved unsustainable. At the end of the previous year, the airline reported a loss of $66 million (£49 million), which amounted to roughly £31 per passenger. Although the airline’s most recent financial results in August 2025 projected that profitability might begin in 2026, these expectations never materialized. Aviation analyst Sean Moulton noted that PLAY attempted to replicate WOW Air’s model, linking secondary European cities with the U.S., but faced a limited market and low yields. Even after shifting strategy to focus on point-to-point leisure destinations, the small Icelandic population made it difficult for the airline to succeed independently. The sudden suspension has caused significant disruption for passengers, many of whom are currently stranded abroad. Travelers are advised to contact their credit card providers, travel agencies, or flight insurers for refunds. In addition, some carriers may provide “rescue fares” for affected travelers seeking alternative routes. Play Airlines collapse due to the ongoing challenges faced by low-cost carriers, particularly in the transatlantic market. Iceland has seen multiple budget carriers struggle in recent years, reflecting the volatility and financial pressures inherent in the aviation sector. This move is part of the airline’s strategy to operate an entirely new-generation fleet by 2035. The airline’s board has approved the purchase of 75 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, including 50 firm orders and 25 options for the B787-9 and B787-10 models. Deliveries are scheduled between 2029 and 2034, according to a statement filed with Istanbul's Public Disclosure Platform (KAP). Turkish Airlines is also negotiating with Rolls-Royce and GE Aerospace for engines, spare parts, and maintenance services for the 787 fleet. Additionally, the airline has finalized discussions with Boeing for 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, 100 firm orders and 50 options covering the 737-8 and 737-10 MAX variants. These 737 MAX orders are contingent upon completing engine agreements with CFM International. “Through these acquisitions, our fleet will consist entirely of new-generation aircraft by 2035, enhancing operational efficiency and supporting an estimated 6% annual growth rate,” the airline said. This announcement closely followed President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, where discussions included energy policies and potential easing of U.S. sanctions to facilitate F-35 fighter jet purchases. “Negotiations with Boeing have been successfully concluded, supporting our strategy to rank among the world’s top five airlines with a fleet of 813 aircraft by 2033. Our nation’s pride, Turkish Airlines, is confidently advancing toward this goal,” said Bilal Ekşi, CEO of Turkish Airlines. The new aircraft will replace older models, improve fuel efficiency, enhance passenger comfort, and support the airline’s sustainability objectives.
