Jersey, Channel Islands: Blue Islands, the Channel Islands regional carrier, suspended trading and cancelled all future flights with immediate effect on 14 November 2025, the airline confirmed in a statement posted to its website. The airline said it was “considering its options” and warned passengers not to travel to airports unless they had made alternative arrangements. The sudden halt ended more than two decades of operations for the airline that connected Guernsey and Jersey with airports across the UK and parts of Europe. Blue Islands whose fleet consisted of ATR 72 turboprops grounded its aircraft as staff and passengers learned of the closure late on Friday. In its media statement the carrier said it regretted the disruption and advised customers with bookings to contact their booking agent or payment provider for refunds and further guidance. The airline also referred passengers with codeshare bookings to the partner carrier named on their ticket. Local authorities in the Channel Islands said they were urgently assessing the fallout for passengers and staff. The collapse said Blue Islands’ decision followed unsuccessful attempts to secure a last-minute financial lifeline. Reports indicate the Government of Jersey had been unable to provide further support, leaving the airline with no viable option but to suspend operations. Regional operators moved quickly to plug gaps left by Blue Islands. Loganair announced it would operate flights on several former Blue Islands routes and offer special “rescue fares” to help stranded travellers, with services planned between Jersey, Guernsey and key UK airports from as early as the weekend following the suspension. Aurigny and other operators also confirmed they were coordinating to provide additional capacity where possible. Passengers affected by cancellations were advised by the airline and local broadcasters not to travel to airports unless they had confirmed onward travel. Those seeking refunds were told to contact the company they booked through or their card issuer. Industry guidance also suggested passengers on package holidays contact their tour operator. Blue Islands’ collapse comes amid a turbulent period for small regional carriers in the UK market, following other recent failures that have reduced seat capacity on short-haul and island routes. Analysts say a combination of rising operating costs, labour pressures and thin margins for short regional sectors has left several carriers exposed. The immediate priorities for governments and airports will be to restore reliable services for island communities and to manage the economic and employment impact.

Anchorage, United States: Regional carrier Kenai Aviation has announced an immediate shutdown of all operations, citing severe financial distress and aircraft maintenance issues that have rendered continued service impossible. The abrupt closure has left several Alaska communities without scheduled passenger air service, raising concerns over rural connectivity in the state. In a message posted on the company’s website on Monday, Kenai Aviation owner Joel Caldwell said he was “devastated” by the decision but could no longer sustain operations amid mounting debt. “We have to cease all operations immediately. I am devastated,” Caldwell wrote. “Our operations may stop, but this vision continues… I believe that Flight 114 will board again. We need capital, we need partners, we need a lifeline.” Founded in 1959, Kenai Aviation originally supported Cook Inlet’s oil and gas operations before expanding into passenger and charter services across south-central Alaska. Caldwell acquired the company in 2018 and attempted to modernize its fleet and restart scheduled service to underserved communities. The company faced a growing debt burden dating back to the pandemic period, which intensified after its King Air aircraft, a key asset serving the Anchorage Unalakleet route, was grounded for maintenance. The setback severely affected the carrier’s ability to maintain service reliability and cash flow. “Kenai Aviation has been struggling to keep up with the cost of operations in an environment where rising fuel, maintenance, and insurance expenses are hitting small regional carriers hardest,” the ADN report stated. Earlier in 2025, the airline’s performance had already been under scrutiny when data showed that only about 45% of scheduled flights between Anchorage and Unalakleet were completed during a three-week span starting in July. The shutdown is a major blow to Unalakleet, a western Alaska community that relied on Kenai Aviation for passenger travel and cargo. With the airline’s exit, the village now lacks a regularly scheduled passenger carrier. Kenai Aviation’s departure could disrupt essential mobility for residents and delay medical, educational, and commercial travel. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is expected to reassign the Essential Air Service (EAS) contract for the affected route, though no replacement operator has yet been confirmed.

Reykjavík, Iceland: Icelandic budget airline Play Airlines has announced the immediate suspension of all flights and the cessation of its operations on September 29, 2025. The unexpected shutdown has left roughly 1,750 passengers stranded at destinations across Europe and North America. The airline cited ongoing financial difficulties, declining ticket sales, and internal operational challenges as the main reasons behind the abrupt closure. Around 500 employees have lost their jobs due to the closure, including pilots, cabin crew, and administrative staff. Play Airlines has stated that it is working to provide guidance and support to its workforce during the transition. Founded in 2019 by former executives of WOW Air and Primera Air, Play Airlines launched operations in 2021 with the goal of offering affordable transatlantic flights connecting Reykjavik’s Keflavík International Airport with European and North American cities. While the airline initially gained traction among price-sensitive travelers, it struggled to maintain profitability amid intense competition and rising operational costs. Until Monday morning, Play Airlines operated flights to several European cities such as London Stansted, Amsterdam, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Alicante, and Faro. The final flight from Reykjavik to Stansted landed on time at 10:40 a.m. on Monday. However, the aircraft remains at the airport, and the scheduled return flight to Reykjavik has been cancelled. PLAY Airlines’ shutdown was driven by mounting financial losses that proved unsustainable. At the end of the previous year, the airline reported a loss of $66 million (£49 million), which amounted to roughly £31 per passenger. Although the airline’s most recent financial results in August 2025 projected that profitability might begin in 2026, these expectations never materialized. Aviation analyst Sean Moulton noted that PLAY attempted to replicate WOW Air’s model, linking secondary European cities with the U.S., but faced a limited market and low yields. Even after shifting strategy to focus on point-to-point leisure destinations, the small Icelandic population made it difficult for the airline to succeed independently. The sudden suspension has caused significant disruption for passengers, many of whom are currently stranded abroad. Travelers are advised to contact their credit card providers, travel agencies, or flight insurers for refunds. In addition, some carriers may provide “rescue fares” for affected travelers seeking alternative routes. Play Airlines collapse due to the ongoing challenges faced by low-cost carriers, particularly in the transatlantic market. Iceland has seen multiple budget carriers struggle in recent years, reflecting the volatility and financial pressures inherent in the aviation sector.
