Aeroflot Moscow To Baku Flight Turns Back After Bird Strike, Lands Safely In Moscow SEO DES: Crew followed safety protocols, landed safely with emergency teams on standby; no injuries. Passengers were assisted, while the aircraft was inspected SOCIAL: An Aeroflot flight (SU1854) from Moscow to Baku returned shortly after takeoff from Sheremetyevo International Airport due to a confirmed bird strike. Initial reports suggested a technical issue, but the airline clarified the cause. The crew followed safety protocols, landed safely with emergency services on standby, and no injuries were reported. Passengers were assisted and later rebooked, while the aircraft underwent inspection. The incident shows standard aviation precautionary procedures during takeoff-related events. Authorities and airline teams continue routine checks to ensure full airworthiness before returning the aircraft to service. Moscow, Russia: An Aeroflot passenger flight bound for Baku was forced to return shortly after takeoff from Sheremetyevo International Airport on March 22, 2026 following a bird strike, prompting a precautionary landing in Moscow. The flight, SU1854, had departed as scheduled but discontinued its climb within minutes, turning back toward the airport in line with standard safety procedures. Early reports from regional media suggested a possible engine malfunction or technical fault, creating initial uncertainty around the cause of the diversion. However, subsequent clarification from the airline and supporting aviation incident data confirmed that the aircraft had encountered birds shortly after departure. The crew, following established safety protocols for such events, elected to return to the departure airport for inspection despite no immediate indication of engine failure. According to available flight data, the aircraft had climbed to a relatively low altitude before reversing course. Bird strikes during this phase of flight are treated with heightened caution due to the potential risk of engine ingestion or hidden structural damage, even when systems appear to be functioning normally. Aviation safety guidance requires crews to prioritize landing at the nearest suitable airport to allow for thorough technical checks. The aircraft landed safely at Sheremetyevo with emergency services on standby as a precaution. The landing was reported to be uneventful, and the aircraft was able to taxi to the stand without assistance. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew. Following the incident, passengers were disembarked and provided assistance by the airline, with arrangements made for an alternative aircraft to continue the journey to Baku. Maintenance teams initiated detailed inspections to assess the extent of any damage resulting from the bird strike.

Govt Removes Fare Caps As Airlines Oppose 60% Seats Free Of Selection Charges SEO DES: Authorities want fair fares, but airlines warn lost add-on revenue may push base prices up, raising concerns over pricing freedom and financial strain SOCIAL: The government’s move to mandate 60% free seat selection and scrap fare caps has drawn strong opposition from airlines, which warn it could lead to higher ticket prices. While authorities have asked carriers to keep fares reasonable and transparent, airlines argue the loss of ancillary revenue may force them to raise base fares, raising concerns over pricing freedom, financial strain, and market impact. The earlier fare caps, which set limits based on distance, have now been withdrawn from March 23, 2026, restoring pricing flexibility to airlines. However, the move signals a shift toward self-regulation, with the government expecting airlines to balance affordability with market-driven pricing. New Delhi, India: A policy push by the government to strengthen passenger rights and enforce fare transparency has triggered sharp resistance from India’s leading airlines, setting the stage for a broader debate over pricing freedom and regulatory oversight in the aviation sector. The Ministry of Civil Aviation, through the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has directed carriers to ensure that at least 60% of seats on every flight are available for free selection, a move aimed at reducing ancillary charges and allowing passengers, particularly families booked under a single PNR, to be seated together without paying extra. The directive comes alongside a broader advisory asking airlines to maintain fares that are “reasonable, transparent and commensurate with market conditions,” even as the government transitions away from direct fare controls. Major carriers including Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet have opposed the 60% free seat selection mandate, arguing that it interferes with their commercial pricing models and could have unintended financial consequences. Represented by the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), these carriers have formally approached the government, stating that seat selection fees form a critical component of ancillary revenues in an industry already operating on thin margins. Airlines contend that such non-ticket income helps offset high operating costs, including fuel, maintenance, and airport charges, and that restricting it would disrupt their financial balance. The government’s latest stance also marks a significant shift in its fare regulation approach. In its December 6 order, the ministry had imposed fare caps on economy class tickets, limiting prices to ₹7,500 for routes up to 500 km, ₹12,000 for distances between 500 and 1,000 km, ₹15,000 for sectors ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 km, and ₹18,000 for routes beyond 1,500 km, excluding taxes and additional fees. However, with operations now stabilised, the ministry has announced that these caps “shall stand withdrawn with effect from March 23, 2026,” effectively restoring pricing flexibility to airlines while simultaneously cautioning them against excessive or opaque fare structures. Airlines have warned that the combination of removing ancillary revenue streams through mandatory free seat allocation and expecting fare restraint could create financial strain. Industry executives argue that instead of lowering travel costs, the policy may inadvertently push up base fares as carriers attempt to recover lost income. This, they say, could neutralise the intended benefit for passengers and lead to a redistribution of costs rather than an actual reduction in overall ticket prices. The industry has also raised concerns about regulatory overreach, maintaining that fare determination in a competitive market should remain dynamic and driven by demand-supply factors. The market response has reflected these concerns, with airline stocks reacting negatively following the announcement, highlighting investor apprehension over potential revenue impacts. The ancillary revenues, including seat selection, baggage fees, and onboard services, have become an increasingly important part of airline business models globally, and any disruption to this stream could have wider financial implications. For passengers, the new framework promises immediate relief in terms of fewer add-on charges and improved seating convenience, particularly for families and groups. At the same time, the removal of fare caps theoretically allows for more competitive pricing, but also raises the risk of price volatility if not closely monitored. The government’s approach indicates a shift toward a hybrid model, where airlines are given pricing freedom but are expected to exercise self-regulation under regulatory scrutiny.

Image: FL360aero Video: FL360aero Nairobi, Kenya: A Safarilink Aviation passenger aircraft veered off the runway while landing at Wilson Airport on Friday night, triggering fresh scrutiny over safety, infrastructure, and emergency preparedness at one of East Africa’s busiest domestic aviation hubs. The aircraft, operating as Flight 090 from Kisumu to Nairobi, was carrying 39 people onboard, including 34 passengers and five crew members, when the incident occurred at approximately 8:55 PM (2055 hrs). All occupants escaped without injury, authorities confirmed. According to airline and airport statements, the aircraft, a De Havilland DHC-8-100 (Dash 8) operated by ALS Limited on behalf of Safarilink skidded off the runway during landing and came to a stop on a grassy section near a runway intersection. The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) confirmed the runway excursion in an official statement, “An aircraft with thirty nine passengers on board… veered off the runway, all passengers and crew are safe, with no injuries reported.” The aircraft sustained visible damage, including to its nose section, landing gear, and propeller, though no fire or fatalities occurred. Initial details point to adverse runway conditions as a contributing factor. The runway was reported to be wet due to rain, with reduced visibility at the time of landing The aircraft lost directional control during rollout, leading to the excursion Passengers described a sudden and forceful deviation from the runway, turning what should have been a routine landing into a high-risk situation. Among those onboard was Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, who described the incident as a “crash-landing” and credited the flight crew for preventing a catastrophe. “I commend the pilot… for controlling the aircraft and steering it off the runway, causing it to stall an action that averted what could have been a catastrophic fire,” he said. The manoeuvre likely prevented the aircraft from continuing at speed along the runway, reducing the risk of fire or structural breakup. Osotsi, speaking as a survivor, said all onboard escaped safely but highlighted the severity of the situation: “I came out safely from an aircraft accident… I was among the 39 passengers on board.” Passengers experienced a sudden loss of control during landing, followed by an abrupt stop after the aircraft exited the runway. No serious injuries were reported, and all occupants were safely evacuated. Despite the safe outcome, the incident has sparked serious concerns over airport safety systems. Osotsi alleged critical failures in emergency response, stating: No ambulance was present No immediate rescue or emergency team responded Passengers were initially left without assistance “There was no ambulance on site and no emergency response team came to our aid,” he said. Kenya’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Department (AAID) has launched a formal probe into the incident.

India Aviation Sector Losses Cross ₹24,000 Crore In 3 Years; ₹10,000 Crore More Likely SEO DES: Govt said post-1994 deregulation, airlines independently manage operations and finances based on market conditions without direct government control SOCIAL: India’s aviation sector reported ₹24,819 crore in losses over FY2022–23 to FY2024–25, the government informed Parliament. Losses were ₹18,606.78 crore in FY2022–23, ₹924.39 crore in FY2023–24, and ₹5,289.73 crore in FY2024–25 (provisional). The Ministry of Civil Aviation said the data was based on airline submissions. It also noted industry estimates of ₹9,500–₹10,500 crore additional losses in FY2025–26. The government reiterated that the sector is deregulated, with airlines independently managing operations and pricing, which depends on factors like fuel cost, demand, and capacity. New Delhi, India: India’s aviation sector has incurred cumulative losses of ₹24,819 crore over a three-year period from FY2022–23 to FY2024–25, the government informed the Rajya Sabha, reflecting continued financial strain across the industry. Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, in a written reply, said the loss figures were based on data submitted by scheduled airline operators. According to the government, airlines reported losses of ₹18,606.78 crore in FY2022–23, which sharply narrowed to ₹924.39 crore in FY2023–24, before rising again to ₹5,289.73 crore (provisional) in FY2024–25, taking the total losses over the three financial years to ₹24,819 crore. The information was provided in response to a parliamentary query seeking details on the financial performance of the aviation sector, including loss trends and future outlook. The query also cited industry estimates suggesting that airlines could incur further losses in the range of ₹9,500 crore to ₹10,500 crore in FY2025–26, indicating that financial pressures may persist despite fluctuations in yearly performance. The government reiterated that the aviation sector operates in a deregulated environment following the repeal of the Air Corporations Act in March 1994, allowing airlines to independently take financial and operational decisions based on market conditions. It noted that aspects such as resource mobilisation, capacity planning and restructuring are managed by airlines on commercial considerations without direct government control. On airfare pricing, the minister said ticket rates are not regulated and are determined by airlines depending on several factors, including seat occupancy, fuel costs, aircraft capacity and seasonal demand. This dynamic pricing mechanism enables carriers to adjust fares in response to changing market conditions. Addressing cost structures, the government stated that the price of Aviation Turbine Fuel has been market-determined since April 1, 2001. ATF currently attracts 11 per cent central excise duty, while a reduced rate of 2 per cent applies to flights operating under the Regional Connectivity Scheme. In addition, state governments and Union Territories levy Value Added Tax on ATF at varying rates. Despite the deregulated framework, airlines continue to operate under regulatory oversight and are required to comply with provisions laid down under the Aircraft Rules, 1937, as well as civil aviation requirements issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

US F-35 Jet Makes Emergency Landing After Suspected Iranian Fire; Cause Under Probe SEO DES: If confirmed this may be the first known instance of an F-35 hit by Iranian air defences with major operational and strategic implications globally wide SOCIAL: A U.S. F-35 stealth fighter made an emergency landing at a military base in the Middle East after a combat mission over Iran. The pilot landed safely and is reported to be in stable condition. Initial reports suggest the aircraft may have been hit by suspected Iranian fire, but U.S. officials have not confirmed this. Authorities say the exact cause of the incident remains under investigation. The episode comes amid escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran, with ongoing military operations in the region and rising risks for aerial missions. Iran: A U.S. fifth-generation F-35 stealth fighter jet was forced to make an emergency landing at a military base on Thursday in the Middle East following a combat mission over Iran, with U.S. officials confirming the incident but withholding final conclusions on its cause as investigations continue. According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the aircraft “landed safely” after the mission and the pilot is in stable condition. Officials said the jet had been flying an operational sortie over Iranian territory when the emergency occurred, but stopped short of confirming whether hostile fire was responsible. Iran’s IRGC has claimed it struck the aircraft, but the claim remains unverified as U.S. officials continue to investigate the incident. Multiple U.S. media outlets, citing defence sources familiar with the matter, reported that the aircraft may have been struck by suspected Iranian surface-to-air fire. However, these assessments remain preliminary and have not been officially validated by the Pentagon. If confirmed, the incident could mark the first known case of an F-35 being successfully hit by Iranian air defences during the ongoing conflict, a development that could carry significant operational and strategic implications. The F-35 is widely regarded as one of the most advanced stealth combat aircraft in the world, designed to evade radar detection and operate in heavily defended airspace. Any confirmed damage caused by enemy fire would raise questions about evolving air defence capabilities in the region. The emergency landing comes amid intensifying hostilities between the United States and Iran since the launch of military operations on February 28. The conflict has already seen multiple aircraft losses, including drone shootdowns, a mid-air tanker crash, and friendly-fire incidents involving U.S. fighter jets. According to available data, at least 13 U.S. service members have been killed and around 200 injured since the start of operations, reflecting the high-risk environment in which air missions are being conducted. CENTCOM has stated that a formal investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events, including whether mechanical failure, operational factors, or hostile engagement led to the emergency landing. Until the probe concludes, officials continue to describe the cause as “suspected” rather than confirmed, even as competing narratives from U.S. and Iranian sources continue to emerge.

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

START: India is emerging as the fastest-growing aviation market worldwide, yet it faces a significant hurdle: a shortage of trained technical personnel, including pilots, engineers, and technicians. This challenge is expected to become more acute as Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles enter the market within the next year or two, creating an additional need for pilots. The issue stems largely from inadequate planning and foresight by the authorities. Consequently, many aspiring Indian pilots are pursuing training in countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bosnia, Montenegro, and the Philippines. In fact, approximately 700 out of every 1,000 commercial pilot licenses issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are earned abroad. India’s Potential as a Global Hub for Aviation Education Considering India’s expansive geography and favorable weather for flying, the country is ideally suited to be a global hub for aviation education. In the 1980s and 1990s, students from nations such as Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and several African countries came to India for flight training. Today, the trend has reversed, with Indian students going overseas for pilot education. One key reason is the slow pace of domestic training programs and the cumbersome security clearance process for foreign students, which discourages them from enrolling in India. Competition from International Flight Schools Meanwhile, nations like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have established world-class flight schools. Students from neighboring Arab countries now mostly prefer the United States, Canada, and Europe for training, despite these regions lacking ideal weather for primary flight instruction. Domestic regulations further complicate matters. The DGCA allows a flight school to operate only if it meets minimum requirements for aircraft and paid-up capital, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) imposes additional capital requirements. These rules do not guarantee quality education but are often sufficient to prevent many capable entrepreneurs from opening flight schools. By contrast, an Indian entrepreneur started a flight school in New Zealand with a single rented aircraft, which has since expanded to a fleet of over 20 planes and now attracts Indian students. Shortage of Trainer Aircraft The shortage of trainer aircraft is another pressing challenge. In the 1970s, Prof. David Hazen of Princeton University, invited by the Indian government to establish the first aeronautical department at IIT Kanpur, outlined a roadmap for India to achieve self-reliance in aviation training. However, progress has been slow. The DGCA developed the Swati light aircraft, manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), but a fatal accident during testing brought the program to an end. Similarly, the Hansa trainer created by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) was rejected by most flight schools. Lessons from the Pushpak Aircraft A comparison with the Pushpak aircraft is instructive. Manufactured in the 1950s, HAL produced 160 Pushpaks, which served India reliably for over 50 years and maintained an excellent safety record. In 1968, the government gifted one Pushpak each to Singapore and Malaysia to help them establish their flight training programs. The Pushpak’s success was largely due to it being modeled closely on the proven US Aeronca Chief. NAL later developed the next-generation Hansa (NG Hansa), which was showcased at the 2020 Wings India airshow, but production has yet to start, and setting up the necessary infrastructure would still take several years even if action begins immediately. Global Trainer Aircraft Shortages and LSAs The shortage of trainer aircraft is not unique to India. Major manufacturers such as Cessna and Piper had slowed production, underestimating demand, and now struggle to meet global requirements. Other countries have tackled this problem by incorporating Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs) into flight training. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, LSAs are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and widely used in the US and EU for commercial pilot instruction. However, Indian regulations currently do not permit LSAs for commercial pilot training. Despite being equipped with only a magnetic compass, pilots trained on Pushpaks have gone on to fly advanced aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A320. Allowing LSAs in India could reduce aircraft shortages, encourage domestic manufacturing, generate employment, and attract foreign investment. Lack of Experienced Flight Instructors The lack of experienced flight instructors adds another layer of difficulty. Rapid growth in airlines such as Indigo and Air India has led many instructors to leave training schools for better pay, career progression, and recognition in commercial aviation. This high turnover leaves less-experienced instructors teaching students, unlike other professional fields where teachers usually have extensive industry experience. In countries like the US, airline pilots can provide primary flight training in their spare time, giving trainees the advantage of learning from seasoned professionals and ensuring higher safety standards. Without urgent, proactive measures, India will continue to rely on foreign nations to fulfill the increasing demand for skilled professionals in its civil aviation sector. https://www.hindustantimes.com/ht-insight/knowledge/flight-training-a-challenge-in-civil-aviation-101727069965710.html
