Lagos, Nigeria: Nigeria’s aviation sector is facing mounting operational and financial strain as soaring jet fuel prices and worsening supply shortages trigger widespread flight disruptions, route cuts and growing safety concerns across the country’s domestic airline industry. Industry officials and airline operators say the crisis has intensified in recent weeks despite government intervention efforts and increased local refining capacity from the Dangote Refinery, which began full-scale operations earlier this year. Airlines argue that while domestic production has improved supply volumes, the price of Jet A1 aviation fuel remains prohibitively high under Nigeria’s deregulated fuel market. According to the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), persistent fuel scarcity has caused repeated flight delays, last-minute schedule changes and route cancellations as carriers struggle to secure sufficient supplies for daily operations. The association warned that prolonged disruptions are also forcing extended crew duty periods, raising concerns over fatigue and operational safety in an industry governed by strict rest regulations. NAAPE President Captain Bunmi Gindeh said the shortages were stretching operational planning and placing additional pressure on pilots, engineers and airline personnel. Domestic carriers have reported that jet fuel prices have risen dramatically since February, with some operators stating costs have more than quadrupled in recent months. Airlines say fuel expenses now account for between 30% and 40% of operating costs in Nigeria, significantly above the global average, making several domestic routes commercially unviable. Local airline Rano Air stated that the sustained increase in fuel prices had forced operational adjustments and schedule revisions. Other carriers have reportedly begun cutting unprofitable routes and rescheduling flights to reduce exposure to escalating fuel costs. The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), representing the country’s domestic airlines, had earlier threatened to suspend nationwide flight operations after accusing fuel marketers of imposing “astronomical and artificial” increases in Jet A1 prices. The group warned that the crisis was pushing airlines toward unsustainable losses and could have broader economic implications affecting employment, banking operations and national connectivity. The dispute prompted emergency talks with the Nigerian government in April, leading airlines to temporarily suspend their planned shutdown following appeals from Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo. As part of emergency relief measures, Nigerian authorities introduced temporary price caps on aviation fuel and allowed airlines to purchase fuel on credit for a limited period. Regulators also proposed direct fuel supply arrangements between marketers and airlines, debt relief measures for operators and discussions with Dangote Refinery over pricing mechanisms. Under the temporary framework, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) capped jet fuel prices between 1,760 and 1,988 naira per litre in Lagos and between 1,809 and 2,037 naira per litre in Abuja based on April benchmark pricing. Despite those measures, airlines say market conditions remain volatile. Nigeria’s aviation industry continues to face broader structural challenges including foreign exchange shortages, high aircraft maintenance costs, limited access to spare parts and inadequate airport infrastructure. The crisis has unfolded alongside wider global disruptions in the aviation fuel market linked to escalating tensions in the Middle East and instability surrounding shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz. Airlines worldwide have reported major increases in fuel-related costs.

Hong Kong, China: A Malaysia Airlines passenger flight bound for Kuala Lumpur was forced to abort takeoff at Hong Kong International Airport on 11 May 2026 after the crew encountered a technical issue during the takeoff roll, which was later followed by a tyre burst. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew. The incident involved Malaysia Airlines Flight MH079, operated by a Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The aircraft had begun its scheduled departure from Hong Kong around 8:45 a.m. local time. According to airport and aviation reports, the takeoff appeared normal initially, but shortly after acceleration began, the flight crew detected an abnormal condition accompanied by a loud bang and strong vibration, prompting an immediate decision to reject the takeoff. The pilots executed a Rejected Takeoff (RTO) procedure and brought the aircraft to a controlled stop on the runway. During the deceleration phase, one of the main landing gear tyres reportedly burst. Early reports indicate that the tyre failure occurred after the takeoff was aborted rather than being the initial cause of the rejection. Emergency response teams were deployed immediately as the aircraft came to a stop. The aircraft was safely brought under control and later vacated the active runway with assistance. It was subsequently towed to a parking bay for inspection. All passengers and crew disembarked safely after the aircraft returned to the apron, and no injuries were reported. Following the incident, the south runway at Hong Kong International Airport was temporarily closed for inspection and safety checks. The closure resulted in minor operational disruptions, including short delays and adjustments to flight movements. Normal runway operations resumed shortly after clearance from airport authorities. The Airport Authority of Hong Kong confirmed that the incident involved a technical issue during the takeoff phase and that emergency services responded promptly. Authorities also confirmed that the tyre burst occurred during deceleration after the rejected takeoff, and not as a primary trigger before the decision to abort departure. The aircraft involved was identified as a Boeing 737-800 operating Malaysia Airlines Flight MH079 from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The flight was later cancelled, and the aircraft underwent initial engineering inspection to determine the cause of the malfunction. Preliminary aviation assessments suggest that investigations are focused on possible landing gear stress during the rejected takeoff sequence or a technical tyre failure. The aircraft’s braking and safety systems functioned as intended, preventing further escalation of the incident. Malaysia Airlines has stated that the aircraft has been withdrawn from service pending detailed inspection and engineering evaluation. Aviation authorities and technical teams are continuing to examine the incident as part of standard safety procedures following a rejected takeoff event.

The incident occurred on May 10, 2026, and involved United Airlines Flight UA579, operated by an Airbus A320 aircraft. The flight departed Cabo San Lucas carrying 143 passengers and 5 crew members and was operating normally during the initial phase of its journey. However, while en route to Houston, the flight crew detected a mechanical irregularity onboard. Although United Airlines has not publicly detailed the exact nature of the malfunction, the issue was significant enough for the pilots to follow standard aviation safety protocols and declare an emergency as a precaution. Following the emergency declaration, the crew initiated a controlled diversion to Monterrey International Airport in Mexico. The aircraft adjusted its route and began a gradual descent toward Monterrey in accordance with established safety procedures. The decision to divert was made to ensure the safety of passengers and crew while addressing the technical concern on the ground rather than continuing the transborder flight to Houston. The aircraft landed safely at Monterrey International Airport at approximately 5:31 p.m. local time. Airport emergency response teams were on standby, but no emergency intervention was required upon landing as the aircraft touched down without incident. All 143 passengers and 5 crew members disembarked safely, and no injuries were reported. Following the landing, passengers were assisted by ground staff, and United Airlines arranged a replacement aircraft to continue the journey to Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport. The airline ensured that all affected passengers were re-accommodated and were able to complete their travel later the same day. United Airlines has stated that the aircraft will undergo a detailed technical inspection as part of standard maintenance and safety protocols. Amsterdam, Netherlands: A Surinam Airways flight from Amsterdam to Paramaribo suffered a landing gear door malfunction on May 8, creating significant aerodynamic drag and increased fuel burn that forced the aircraft to return to Amsterdam as a precaution. The flight was being operated by Universal Sky Carrier under a wet-lease arrangement using a former Lufthansa Airbus A340-600. After identifying the issue, the crew opted to discontinue the flight and initiated a precautionary return to Schiphol. The aircraft reportedly remained airborne for some time to manage fuel levels before safely landing back in Amsterdam without further incident. No injuries among passengers or crew were reported. Emergency services were positioned as a standard precaution during the aircraft’s return. The disruption resulted in a delay to the Amsterdam-Paramaribo service as the aircraft required technical inspection following landing. The mandatory crew rest requirements and maintenance checks led to the flight being rescheduled for departure on May 10. The incident comes as Surinam Airways continues relying on Airbus A340 aircraft for its long-haul Amsterdam operations amid ongoing fleet and operational challenges. The carrier has operated multiple leased A340 variants over recent years, including aircraft previously sourced from Air Belgium and other operators for the Paramaribo route. The airline has faced earlier operational disruptions involving Airbus A340 aircraft, including flap-related return incidents and temporary aircraft groundings on the Amsterdam sector. Palma de Mallorca, Spain: An Air Europa Boeing 737-800 suffered a landing incident at Palma de Mallorca Airport after an earlier bird strike reportedly damaged the aircraft’s nose landing gear steering system, leading to initial findings that claimed the jet had “lost a wheel” during landing. The incident occurred on May 8 during Air Europa flight UX6079 from Madrid to Palma de Mallorca. The aircraft involved has been identified as a Boeing 737-800 registered EC-MPG. The aircraft sustained a bird strike while on approach to Runway 06L at Palma Airport. The strike reportedly damaged the nose gear steering mechanism before touchdown. The touchdown itself initially appeared normal. However, during the rollout phase, the aircraft gradually veered to the right before exiting the runway area at low speed and coming to a stop near a high-speed turnoff. Early local media reports stated that one of the landing gear wheels detached during landing, with photographs showing the aircraft leaning to one side on the runway surrounded by emergency vehicles. The visible wheel and tyre damage was likely a consequence of the earlier bird-strike-related steering failure rather than an independent mechanical wheel failure. However, authorities have not yet released an official technical conclusion, and the exact sequence of damage remains under investigation. Emergency services responded immediately after the aircraft came to a stop. Passengers were temporarily unable to disembark normally while firefighters and ground personnel secured the aircraft. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew. Several prominent figures from Mallorca’s tourism industry were reportedly onboard the flight after attending an event in Madrid, according to local Spanish media. The aircraft remained grounded for several hours while maintenance inspections were carried out. The aircraft subsequently returned to service after repairs and inspections were completed.

Denver, United States: A Frontier Airlines Airbus A321neo struck and killed a trespasser while departing Denver International Airport late on May 8, triggering an aborted takeoff, an engine fire, smoke inside the cabin, and an emergency evacuation that left 12 people with minor injuries, according to airport authorities, Frontier Airlines, the FAA and the NTSB. The aircraft, operating as Frontier Airlines Flight 4345 from Denver International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport, was carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members when the incident occurred at approximately 11:19 p.m. local time on Runway 17L. Officials said the unidentified individual breached the airport perimeter fence and entered the active runway area shortly before the collision. Denver International Airport confirmed the person was not believed to be an airport employee. Authorities stated the trespasser was struck by the aircraft during the takeoff roll and was pronounced dead at the scene. Frontier Airlines said the pilots immediately rejected the takeoff after reporting that the aircraft had struck a person on the runway. The impact resulted in a brief engine fire and smoke entering the cabin, prompting an emergency evacuation using inflatable slides. Official figures released by Frontier Airlines and cited by the NTSB confirmed that 12 occupants sustained minor injuries during the evacuation. Five people were transported to local hospitals for treatment, while the remaining injured passengers were treated at the airport. No fatalities or serious injuries were reported among passengers or crew. “We are gathering information about the emergency evacuation to determine if it meets criteria for a safety investigation,” NTSB spokesperson Sarah Taylor Sulick said early Sunday, adding that the agency might have more details in a few hours. A spokesman for the Denver Police Department said Sunday the investigation into the incident was ongoing and that the identity of the person on the runway will be confirmed and released by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner. The CEO of the Denver airport, Phil Washington, said he knows there are questions still to be answered. “As this is an active investigation with numerous other agencies involved, it is going to take some time as we are still confirming what information we can share at this time,” Washington said in a statement. “This was a horrible and preventable tragedy that has affected many due to the actions of one person who apparently trespassed at an airport and lost their life as a result.” Flight tracking data reviewed by Flightradar24 showed the Airbus A321neo accelerated to approximately 127 knots before braking heavily and stopping on the runway. Emergency crews responded immediately and extinguished the engine fire. Passengers were later transported back to the terminal by bus, and Frontier arranged an alternate flight for most travelers. The affected runway remained closed for several hours before reopening Saturday morning. Federal authorities have launched multiple investigations into both the runway incursion and the emergency evacuation process. The National Transportation Safety Board said it is gathering information regarding the evacuation procedures, while the Federal Aviation Administration, local law enforcement and airport security officials are also examining how the individual gained access to the restricted airside area. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy described the incident as a serious security breach and stressed that unauthorized access to airport movement areas poses extreme danger to both aircraft operations and public safety.

Kathmandu, Nepal: A Turkish Airlines Airbus A330 operating flight TK726 from Istanbul to Kathmandu suffered a tyre fire during landing at Nepal’s Tribhuvan International Airport on Monday morning, triggering an emergency evacuation and temporarily shutting down the country’s busiest airport. According to Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority, the incident occurred shortly after the aircraft touched down at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Airport officials said flames and smoke were seen emerging from the aircraft’s right rear landing gear area moments after landing. Emergency response teams stationed at the airport immediately rushed to the runway and brought the situation under control within a short period. The aircraft involved was an Airbus A330 arriving from Istanbul with 278 passengers and 11 crew members onboard, taking the total number of occupants to 289. All passengers and crew were safely evacuated through emergency exits, and no injuries were reported during the evacuation process. Gyanendra Bhul, spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, told Reuters that the fire originated in the aircraft’s right rear tyre after landing. Officials confirmed that firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze before the aircraft was towed away from the runway to a taxiway area, where it remained grounded for technical inspections. The incident forced authorities to suspend airport operations for nearly an hour because Tribhuvan International Airport operates with a single runway. Several incoming flights were reportedly placed on hold or delayed while emergency teams cleared the runway and investigators initiated preliminary assessments. Nepal’s aviation sector continues to face operational challenges due to mountainous terrain, rapidly changing weather conditions and difficult approach procedures into Kathmandu Valley. A previous incident in 2015 involved a Turkish Airlines aircraft, when another Airbus A330 skidded off the runway at Kathmandu during dense fog conditions. No injuries were reported in that earlier occurrence either. Turkish Airlines had not officially issued a detailed statement regarding the exact technical cause of the tyre fire. Aviation authorities in Nepal are expected to conduct a technical investigation into the incident, including inspections of the landing gear and braking systems. The latest Kathmandu incident comes months after another operational issue involving a Turkish Airlines Airbus A330 in February 2026, when flight THY727 operating from Kathmandu to Istanbul reportedly diverted to Kolkata after the aircraft’s right engine developed a fire indication shortly after takeoff. That flight landed safely with all 236 people onboard, and authorities later launched an investigation into the engine-related emergency.

Montreal, Canada: Airports Council International (ACI) World has called for a comprehensive overhaul of global aviation policy frameworks, warning that outdated regulatory systems could limit the industry’s ability to manage rising demand, expand infrastructure, and meet long-term sustainability targets. The organisation formally launched its Policy Agenda 2030, positioning it as a strategic roadmap to modernise aviation governance and strengthen the role of airports in global economic development. ACI World said the aviation sector is entering a phase of sustained demand growth, but regulatory and infrastructure systems have not evolved at the same pace. It highlighted that increasing passenger volumes, geopolitical uncertainty, climate pressures, and operational constraints are creating a need for coordinated policy reform at the global level. The organisation stressed that without timely intervention, capacity bottlenecks and inefficiencies could emerge across major airport systems worldwide. At the core of the Policy Agenda 2030 is a call to reposition airports as strategic economic assets rather than purely infrastructure operators. ACI World emphasised that airports play a critical role in driving trade, tourism, investment, and employment, and therefore require governance models that reflect their broader economic importance. The organisation urged governments to adopt policies that enable airports to operate with greater flexibility, competitiveness, and financial sustainability. The framework also places strong focus on airport capacity expansion and operational efficiency. ACI World has called for modernised slot allocation systems, enhanced infrastructure development, and improved passenger facilitation processes to manage future traffic growth. It further highlighted the importance of workforce development and operational readiness as key enablers of efficient airport performance in the coming decade. Safety and security remain central to the agenda, with ACI World advocating for risk-based and globally harmonised regulatory frameworks. The organisation said aviation safety systems must continue to evolve in response to emerging operational challenges while maintaining high international standards and improving efficiency across airport operations. Sustainability is another major pillar of the Policy Agenda 2030. ACI World stressed the need for coordinated global action to address aviation emissions and climate resilience. It called for policies that support decarbonisation while ensuring airports can continue to expand capacity to meet growing demand. The organisation highlighted the role of airports as key contributors to climate action through infrastructure adaptation and long-term environmental planning. ACI World Director General Justin Erbacci underscored that aviation policy must evolve in line with industry growth, stating that airports should be recognised as strategic national infrastructure assets. He noted that enabling policy environments are essential for airports to deliver increased connectivity, economic value, and sustainable development outcomes. The Policy Agenda 2030 aligns with ACI World’s broader strategic direction for 2025–2030 and complements global aviation planning frameworks, including the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) long-term strategy toward 2050. UK Unveils £46.5 Million In Initiative To Fast-Track Drones And Flying Taxis By 2028 SEO DES: The initiative improves regulations, enables wider drone use & strengthens airspace management while streamlining approvals for commercial drone operations SOCIAL: The United Kingdom has launched a £46.5 million funding package to speed up the development of drones and eVTOL aircraft, aiming to support commercial air mobility and flying taxi services by 2028. The initiative focuses on improving regulations, enabling wider drone use, and strengthening airspace management. Part of the funding will streamline approvals for commercial drone operations in sectors like emergency response, logistics, and infrastructure inspection. The rest will establish a national drone tracking system to enhance safety and prevent illegal drone activity. Officials said the move will boost the UK’s position in advanced air mobility, with strong industry support from firms like Vertical Aerospace, as the sector moves toward large-scale commercial deployment. London, United Kingdom: The United Kingdom has launched a major £46.5 million (US$63.3 million) funding initiative aimed at accelerating the deployment of drones and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, marking one of the country’s largest commitments to advanced air mobility (AAM) and autonomous aviation technologies to date. The package, announced on May 5 by the Department for Transport (DfT), Home Office and the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), seeks to streamline drone regulations, support commercial eVTOL operations and strengthen drone security enforcement across British airspace. Under the programme, £26.5 million will be allocated to the CAA to modernise and simplify regulatory approvals for commercial drone operations. The funding is intended to reduce administrative bottlenecks that have slowed industry growth and help integrate drones into routine public and commercial services including emergency response, medical logistics, infrastructure inspections and supply chain operations. The initiative also aims to establish the regulatory framework required to introduce commercial flying taxi services in the UK from 2028. Authorities said drone operators will gain access to a streamlined digital application system designed to significantly reduce approval timelines and improve operational scalability. The move aligns with the UK CAA’s eVTOL Delivery Model published in September 2025, which confirmed SC-VTOL as the certification basis for future air taxi aircraft and outlined operational provisions for both day and night flights under visual and instrument flight rules. The remaining £20.5 million will fund the development of the UK’s first national Hybrid Remote ID system for drones, effectively a digital “number plate” for unmanned aircraft. The technology will broadcast a drone’s identity and live location during flight, allowing nearby compatible receivers and authorised agencies to monitor operations in real time. The system will also maintain historical flight records through a secure online platform, enabling law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute illegal or unsafe drone operators more efficiently. The government said the new identification network is aimed at addressing rising concerns surrounding rogue drone activity near airports, prisons, critical infrastructure and urban areas. Security Minister Dan Jarvis described the initiative as “a numberplate system for the skies,” adding that authorities would be able to identify operators violating aviation laws and remove illegal drones from UK airspace. UK Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Minister Keir Mather said the investment would support British innovation while ensuring safety and public confidence remain central to the expansion of autonomous aviation technologies. He stated that the programme would “unlock barriers to growth,” create jobs, lower emissions and reinforce Britain’s position as a global aviation leader. Mather added that the advanced air mobility sector could contribute as much as £103 billion to the UK economy by 2050. Industry leaders welcomed the announcement, viewing it as a critical step toward scaling real-world commercial drone and eVTOL operations. Bristol-based eVTOL developer Vertical Aerospace said faster-moving regulation combined with high safety standards would be essential for the UK to lead the global advanced air mobility sector. The company’s VX4 eVTOL aircraft recently completed piloted transition flight testing as it progresses toward certification and commercial deployment targets later this decade. Autonomous cargo drone company Windracers also supported the reforms, stating that targeted investment and practical regulation were necessary to unlock large-scale autonomous aviation operations. The company highlighted its ULTRA drone platform, which is already being deployed in challenging operational environments including Ukraine and remote logistics missions across the Scottish Highlands and Islands. The funding package forms part of a broader UK aviation and decarbonisation strategy that includes £2.3 billion for green aircraft development programmes and an additional £63 million for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) initiatives. Officials say the latest investment demonstrates the government’s intention to position Britain as an “aviation superpower” in next-generation aerospace technologies including drones, autonomous cargo aircraft and urban air mobility systems. While the announcement has been widely welcomed by industry stakeholders, analysts note that the UK still faces competition from the United States, China and the United Arab Emirates, all of which are investing aggressively in advanced air mobility ecosystems, certification frameworks and commercial eVTOL infrastructure. Nevertheless, the latest funding package is expected to accelerate Britain’s transition from experimental drone operations to routine commercial deployment over the coming years.

from Boston to Columbus was forced to make an emergency diversion to Bradley International Airport in Connecticut after the crew reported a cabin pressurization issue shortly after reaching cruising altitude. The aircraft involved was an Embraer E175LR, registration N242JQ, operating as Delta Connection Flight DL5910 and flown by Republic Airways on behalf of Delta Air Lines. The regional jet departed Boston Logan International Airport at approximately 10:48 p.m. EDT on May 7, bound for John Glenn Columbus International Airport in Ohio. Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft climbing to around 37,000-38,000 feet before the crew detected what was later identified as a loss of cabin pressurization. The pilots subsequently declared an emergency and squawked transponder code 7700, the internationally recognized signal for an in-flight emergency. Following the alert, the aircraft initiated a rapid descent to approximately 10,000 feet, which is a standard emergency procedure during depressurization events to ensure passengers and crew can breathe safely without relying solely on supplemental oxygen systems. The flight diverted to Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, where emergency services were placed on standby ahead of arrival. The Embraer E175 landed safely at around 11:45 p.m. EDT, less than one hour after departure from Boston. After landing, airport fire crews and technical teams reportedly inspected the aircraft on a taxiway before it proceeded to the ramp. Initial reports suggest responders examined the engines and airframe for possible structural or mechanical damage associated with the depressurization event. No visible external damage was identified during the initial inspection. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew members. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is expected to investigate the incident to determine the cause of the pressurization anomaly.

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

START: India is emerging as the fastest-growing aviation market worldwide, yet it faces a significant hurdle: a shortage of trained technical personnel, including pilots, engineers, and technicians. This challenge is expected to become more acute as Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles enter the market within the next year or two, creating an additional need for pilots. The issue stems largely from inadequate planning and foresight by the authorities. Consequently, many aspiring Indian pilots are pursuing training in countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bosnia, Montenegro, and the Philippines. In fact, approximately 700 out of every 1,000 commercial pilot licenses issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are earned abroad. India’s Potential as a Global Hub for Aviation Education Considering India’s expansive geography and favorable weather for flying, the country is ideally suited to be a global hub for aviation education. In the 1980s and 1990s, students from nations such as Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and several African countries came to India for flight training. Today, the trend has reversed, with Indian students going overseas for pilot education. One key reason is the slow pace of domestic training programs and the cumbersome security clearance process for foreign students, which discourages them from enrolling in India. Competition from International Flight Schools Meanwhile, nations like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have established world-class flight schools. Students from neighboring Arab countries now mostly prefer the United States, Canada, and Europe for training, despite these regions lacking ideal weather for primary flight instruction. Domestic regulations further complicate matters. The DGCA allows a flight school to operate only if it meets minimum requirements for aircraft and paid-up capital, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) imposes additional capital requirements. These rules do not guarantee quality education but are often sufficient to prevent many capable entrepreneurs from opening flight schools. By contrast, an Indian entrepreneur started a flight school in New Zealand with a single rented aircraft, which has since expanded to a fleet of over 20 planes and now attracts Indian students. Shortage of Trainer Aircraft The shortage of trainer aircraft is another pressing challenge. In the 1970s, Prof. David Hazen of Princeton University, invited by the Indian government to establish the first aeronautical department at IIT Kanpur, outlined a roadmap for India to achieve self-reliance in aviation training. However, progress has been slow. The DGCA developed the Swati light aircraft, manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), but a fatal accident during testing brought the program to an end. Similarly, the Hansa trainer created by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) was rejected by most flight schools. Lessons from the Pushpak Aircraft A comparison with the Pushpak aircraft is instructive. Manufactured in the 1950s, HAL produced 160 Pushpaks, which served India reliably for over 50 years and maintained an excellent safety record. In 1968, the government gifted one Pushpak each to Singapore and Malaysia to help them establish their flight training programs. The Pushpak’s success was largely due to it being modeled closely on the proven US Aeronca Chief. NAL later developed the next-generation Hansa (NG Hansa), which was showcased at the 2020 Wings India airshow, but production has yet to start, and setting up the necessary infrastructure would still take several years even if action begins immediately. Global Trainer Aircraft Shortages and LSAs The shortage of trainer aircraft is not unique to India. Major manufacturers such as Cessna and Piper had slowed production, underestimating demand, and now struggle to meet global requirements. Other countries have tackled this problem by incorporating Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs) into flight training. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, LSAs are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and widely used in the US and EU for commercial pilot instruction. However, Indian regulations currently do not permit LSAs for commercial pilot training. Despite being equipped with only a magnetic compass, pilots trained on Pushpaks have gone on to fly advanced aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A320. Allowing LSAs in India could reduce aircraft shortages, encourage domestic manufacturing, generate employment, and attract foreign investment. Lack of Experienced Flight Instructors The lack of experienced flight instructors adds another layer of difficulty. Rapid growth in airlines such as Indigo and Air India has led many instructors to leave training schools for better pay, career progression, and recognition in commercial aviation. This high turnover leaves less-experienced instructors teaching students, unlike other professional fields where teachers usually have extensive industry experience. In countries like the US, airline pilots can provide primary flight training in their spare time, giving trainees the advantage of learning from seasoned professionals and ensuring higher safety standards. Without urgent, proactive measures, India will continue to rely on foreign nations to fulfill the increasing demand for skilled professionals in its civil aviation sector. https://www.hindustantimes.com/ht-insight/knowledge/flight-training-a-challenge-in-civil-aviation-101727069965710.html
