Data presented by the Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) of the South African Civil Aviation Authority at the NAC 2026 conference in Gauteng revealed that while total accidents fell to 76, the second-lowest figure ever recorded fatal accidents surged from four to 17 within a year, with fatalities climbing to 24, the highest toll since 2021. The findings paint a troubling picture for Africa’s flight training and general aviation environment, where safety experts say human factors, weak operational oversight and weather-related decision-making failures continue to expose student pilots and low-hour aviators to elevated risk. According to the AIID data, Aviation Training Organisations (ATOs) recorded 19 accidents during 2025/26, down from 26 the previous year and 30 in 2023/24. However, training-related serious incidents rose dramatically from four in 2024/25 to 19 in 2025/26, signalling growing operational stress within the sector. The report identified flight crew and pilot actions as the leading causal factor in 55% of accidents investigated, reinforcing concerns about pilot judgment, risk assessment and airmanship standards. AIID Executive Themba Thabethe warned that the industry’s declining accident numbers should not obscure the underlying severity of recent crashes, particularly in general aviation and training environments where fatal outcomes are rising disproportionately. The presentation highlighted that South Africa averaged more than six accidents per month during the reporting period, while the fatal accident rate increased sharply from 3% to 22%. Investigators said the most persistent safety threats remain concentrated in general aviation, non-type certified aircraft and training operations segments that dominate pilot development pipelines across Africa. The report also showed that non-type certified aircraft and general aviation categories continued to represent the highest-risk operational areas. A series of recent accident case studies presented by AIID revealed recurring patterns involving deteriorating weather, continuation bias, inadequate safety management oversight and pilots pressing into instrument meteorological conditions despite warnings. On 9 June 2025 an accident involving a Piper PA-28-180 operating under Part 91 rules ended in a crash landing near Greytown after pilots departed despite severe weather warnings issued for KwaZulu-Natal. A related aircraft in the formation flight was destroyed, killing three people, including a student pilot. Investigators identified spatial disorientation and poor go/no-go decision-making as central factors. Another fatal October 2025 accident involving a Sling 2 aircraft operated by an ATO highlighted concerns surrounding student-level endorsements and weather risk assessment after the pilot encountered deteriorating conditions over mountainous terrain in KwaZulu-Natal. The pilot was killed after the aircraft crashed near Boston in the Midlands. AIID said the investigations demonstrated “cross-cutting lessons” affecting the wider training environment, including poor pre-flight risk culture, inadequate Safety Management Systems (SMS) oversight and pilots continuing flights incrementally into worsening conditions instead of diverting. The authority further noted that visual meteorological conditions at departure often created a false sense of security for inexperienced pilots, particularly in terrain-heavy regions where weather conditions deteriorate rapidly. While the airline sector maintained a zero fatal accident rate, investigators cautioned that serious incidents involving larger commercial operations under Part 121 regulations increased from one to six cases during the year, warranting “focused monitoring and intervention.” The report nevertheless contrasted the challenges facing general aviation with South Africa’s strong airline safety record. The country has not experienced a fatal airline accident on its soil in more than 59 years, while no fatal accident involving a South African airline operator has occurred in over 39 years. International benchmarking presented by AIID showed South Africa’s fatal accident average of approximately 11% remains broadly comparable with Australia and Canada. However, investigators stressed that the sharp rise in fatal accidents during 2025/26 demands “absolute improvement.” Safety officials said the data highlights a critical challenge facing Africa’s aviation growth ambitions: expanding pilot training capacity while maintaining robust operational discipline and oversight standards. South Africa Reports Surge In Fatal Flight Training, GA Accidents As Death Toll Hits 24

The funding round pushed the company’s valuation to approximately $1.1 billion, making it the first Indian private space startup to cross the unicorn threshold. The round saw participation from funds managed by BlackRock, founders of Greenko Group, Arkam Ventures, Playbook Partners, Shanghvi Family Office and several existing investors. With this latest infusion, Skyroot’s total funding has climbed to nearly $160 million since its founding in 2018. The company said the fresh capital will be used to increase launch frequency, expand manufacturing capacity, accelerate development of its heavier-lift Vikram-2 rocket and strengthen its commercial launch operations globally. Founded by former ISRO scientists Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, Skyroot emerged from Hyderabad’s growing deep-tech ecosystem and became one of the earliest startups incubated at T-Hub. The company was established shortly after the Indian government opened the space sector to private participation in 2020, enabling startups to access ISRO facilities and infrastructure. Skyroot later became the first private Indian company to formally sign an agreement with ISRO for testing and launch support. Skyroot first entered global headlines in November 2022 after successfully launching Vikram-S, India’s first privately developed rocket to reach space. The suborbital mission, named “Mission Prarambh,” was launched from Sriharikota and reached an apogee of nearly 89.5 kilometres, establishing the company as a pioneer in India’s commercial launch industry. The company is now preparing for the maiden orbital launch of Vikram-1, which is expected to become India’s first privately developed orbital launch vehicle. Skyroot has positioned the Vikram series as low-cost, rapidly deployable launch systems designed primarily for the growing global small satellite market. According to the company, the Vikram rockets incorporate extensive use of carbon composite structures, modular architecture and 3D-printed engines to reduce manufacturing timelines and operational costs. Skyroot has repeatedly stated that its long-term objective is to make space launches as reliable, regular and affordable as commercial aviation. Sherpalo Ventures founder Ram Shriram, one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent early technology investors and an early Google backer, is expected to join Skyroot’s board following the investment. Sherpalo had previously invested in the company during earlier funding rounds as well. Skyroot’s rise also reflects Hyderabad’s emergence as a major aerospace and defence innovation hub. Telangana leaders, including former IT minister KT Rama Rao, described the milestone as a validation of the state’s long-term focus on innovation infrastructure and deep-tech incubation through platforms such as T-Hub and T-Works. In recent years, Skyroot has significantly expanded its infrastructure footprint. In 2023, the company unveiled “MAX-Q,” described as India’s largest private integrated rocket development facility near Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The company has also signed agreements with the Telangana government to establish integrated private rocket manufacturing, integration and testing facilities in the state. The startup has additionally developed multiple propulsion technologies under its “Kalam” engine series, named after former President and aerospace scientist APJ Abdul Kalam. Kansas City, United States: An American Airlines regional jet operating as American Eagle Flight 5318 made an emergency landing after smoke was reported inside the cabin while the aircraft was approaching its destination in Kansas City, according to airline officials and air traffic control recordings. The flight, operated by PSA Airlines using a Bombardier CRJ-900 regional jet, had departed from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and was en route to Kansas City with 76 passengers and crew members onboard. The emergency unfolded shortly before landing when the crew detected smoke inside the aircraft. Air traffic control audio captured the pilot declaring an emergency as the aircraft neared the airport. In the transmission, the pilot stated, “Bluestreak 5318, declaring an emergency. We’re landing,” signaling the urgency of the situation. The aircraft was reportedly about two miles from the runway when the emergency was declared. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched and positioned along the runway as the jet prepared for landing. The aircraft landed safely without further incident. Following touchdown, passengers were evacuated onto the taxiway as firefighters and emergency personnel inspected the aircraft. Images and videos shared online showed passengers exiting through overwing exits and standing on the tarmac while first responders surrounded the regional jet. Among those onboard was U.S. Congressman Tracey Mann, who later shared details of the incident on social media. In a video posted after the landing, Mann thanked emergency responders and confirmed smoke had been detected onboard the aircraft. “There was smoke on our aircraft and so we landed and are now sitting on the tarmac,” he said in the video, while also expressing appreciation for airport fire and rescue crews responding to the emergency. Singapore: Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group reported a sharp 57.4 per cent decline in annual net profit for the financial year ended March 31, 2026, as mounting losses at Air India and the absence of a one-time accounting gain from the Vistara merger weighed heavily on the carrier’s bottom line. The airline group posted a net profit of SGD 1.184 billion for FY2025/26, down from SGD 2.778 billion recorded a year earlier. Despite the steep fall in earnings, SIA’s core airline operations remained strong, with the group posting record revenue and higher operating profit driven by sustained passenger demand and network expansion. According to SIA’s earnings report, the biggest factor behind the profit decline was the absence of the SGD 1.098 billion non-cash accounting gain booked in November 2024 following the completion of the Air India-Vistara merger. The previous year’s results had been significantly boosted by that one-off gain after SIA’s stake in Vistara was converted into a 25.1 per cent shareholding in the enlarged Air India Group. At the same time, SIA swung from reporting profits from associated companies last year to posting a SGD 846 million share of losses in FY26, mainly due to Air India’s worsening financial performance. The airline said this year’s accounts reflected a full year of Air India losses, compared to only four months in the previous financial year after the merger completion. Financial disclosures from Singapore Airlines indicated that Air India Group, comprising Air India and Air India Express, recorded losses of approximately SGD 3.56 billion, equivalent to around USD 2.8 billion or more than ₹26,000 crore during FY2025/26. Some reports estimated the losses could be even higher at nearly ₹28,300 crore depending on accounting adjustments and currency conversion methods. The losses mark Air India’s largest annual financial setback since the Tata Group reacquired the airline in 2022. Air India has not yet officially released its standalone FY26 financial statements. While net profit fell sharply, Singapore Airlines’ operational performance remained resilient. Group revenue rose five per cent year-on-year to a record SGD 20.55 billion, supported by strong passenger demand, higher yields, and robust travel flows across Asia and Europe. Operating profit climbed 39 per cent to approximately SGD 2.52 billion, and the airline carried a record 42.4 million passengers during the year. The airline also maintained expansion plans despite industry pressures. Reuters reported that SIA intends to continue adding capacity and launching new services, including flights connecting Singapore and Madrid via Barcelona, while increasing frequencies to Manchester, Milan, Munich, and London Gatwick.

Ohio, United States: Two people were killed after a small single-engine aircraft crashed into a residential home in Akron, Ohio, on Thursday afternoon, triggering a massive fire and prompting a federal investigation into the cause of the accident. Authorities confirmed that the victims were the two occupants onboard the aircraft, while a family of four inside the house escaped safely without injuries. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft involved was a Piper PA-28 Cherokee, identified in several reports as a 1963 Piper Cherokee. The aircraft crashed into a home on Canterbury Circle at approximately 3:45 p.m. local time after departing from Akron Fulton Regional Airport, located only a few miles from the crash site. The identities of the two deceased occupants had not been officially released as of the latest updates. Authorities also have not disclosed whether the flight was private, instructional, or recreational. The Akron Fire Department said a couple and their two children were inside the residence when the aircraft slammed into the garage area of the house. All four managed to escape unharmed before flames engulfed parts of the structure. Akron Fire Department District Chief Sierjie Lash confirmed during a press briefing that no one on the ground suffered injuries. “There were a couple and two children that lived there. They were all four home, and they were able to get out with no injuries, so we're very fortunate that they are safe,” Lash said. Emergency responders initially treated the incident as a residential structure fire after receiving multiple calls reporting explosions, heavy smoke and flames. “We got a call that residents saw a plane going down into the house,” Lash said. “We got more calls that people heard explosions.” Residents in the neighborhood described hearing a loud whining sound moments before the impact. Neighbor Christi Gould said power briefly flickered before the crash. “We were sitting there, the power flickered for a few seconds, and then I heard the whining of a plane,” she said, adding that a loud explosion shook nearby homes seconds later. Another resident, Jewell Ulrich, described seeing the aircraft debris scattered between homes after the crash. “That fire was instant,” Ulrich said. “It was so hot.” Her husband, Steve Ulrich, said the aircraft’s tail section remained lodged near the garage area after the impact. Videos circulating on social media showed thick black smoke rising above the suburban neighborhood while flames consumed parts of the residence. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation into the crash. The NTSB will lead the investigation and is expected to release a preliminary report in the coming days. As of now, officials have not confirmed the cause of the accident. No distress call, mechanical failure, weather issue or pilot-related factor has yet been officially identified. Authorities also evacuated at least one neighboring home as a precaution while investigators assessed structural damage to the impacted residence.

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

START: India is emerging as the fastest-growing aviation market worldwide, yet it faces a significant hurdle: a shortage of trained technical personnel, including pilots, engineers, and technicians. This challenge is expected to become more acute as Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles enter the market within the next year or two, creating an additional need for pilots. The issue stems largely from inadequate planning and foresight by the authorities. Consequently, many aspiring Indian pilots are pursuing training in countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bosnia, Montenegro, and the Philippines. In fact, approximately 700 out of every 1,000 commercial pilot licenses issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are earned abroad. India’s Potential as a Global Hub for Aviation Education Considering India’s expansive geography and favorable weather for flying, the country is ideally suited to be a global hub for aviation education. In the 1980s and 1990s, students from nations such as Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and several African countries came to India for flight training. Today, the trend has reversed, with Indian students going overseas for pilot education. One key reason is the slow pace of domestic training programs and the cumbersome security clearance process for foreign students, which discourages them from enrolling in India. Competition from International Flight Schools Meanwhile, nations like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have established world-class flight schools. Students from neighboring Arab countries now mostly prefer the United States, Canada, and Europe for training, despite these regions lacking ideal weather for primary flight instruction. Domestic regulations further complicate matters. The DGCA allows a flight school to operate only if it meets minimum requirements for aircraft and paid-up capital, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) imposes additional capital requirements. These rules do not guarantee quality education but are often sufficient to prevent many capable entrepreneurs from opening flight schools. By contrast, an Indian entrepreneur started a flight school in New Zealand with a single rented aircraft, which has since expanded to a fleet of over 20 planes and now attracts Indian students. Shortage of Trainer Aircraft The shortage of trainer aircraft is another pressing challenge. In the 1970s, Prof. David Hazen of Princeton University, invited by the Indian government to establish the first aeronautical department at IIT Kanpur, outlined a roadmap for India to achieve self-reliance in aviation training. However, progress has been slow. The DGCA developed the Swati light aircraft, manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), but a fatal accident during testing brought the program to an end. Similarly, the Hansa trainer created by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) was rejected by most flight schools. Lessons from the Pushpak Aircraft A comparison with the Pushpak aircraft is instructive. Manufactured in the 1950s, HAL produced 160 Pushpaks, which served India reliably for over 50 years and maintained an excellent safety record. In 1968, the government gifted one Pushpak each to Singapore and Malaysia to help them establish their flight training programs. The Pushpak’s success was largely due to it being modeled closely on the proven US Aeronca Chief. NAL later developed the next-generation Hansa (NG Hansa), which was showcased at the 2020 Wings India airshow, but production has yet to start, and setting up the necessary infrastructure would still take several years even if action begins immediately. Global Trainer Aircraft Shortages and LSAs The shortage of trainer aircraft is not unique to India. Major manufacturers such as Cessna and Piper had slowed production, underestimating demand, and now struggle to meet global requirements. Other countries have tackled this problem by incorporating Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs) into flight training. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, LSAs are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and widely used in the US and EU for commercial pilot instruction. However, Indian regulations currently do not permit LSAs for commercial pilot training. Despite being equipped with only a magnetic compass, pilots trained on Pushpaks have gone on to fly advanced aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A320. Allowing LSAs in India could reduce aircraft shortages, encourage domestic manufacturing, generate employment, and attract foreign investment. Lack of Experienced Flight Instructors The lack of experienced flight instructors adds another layer of difficulty. Rapid growth in airlines such as Indigo and Air India has led many instructors to leave training schools for better pay, career progression, and recognition in commercial aviation. This high turnover leaves less-experienced instructors teaching students, unlike other professional fields where teachers usually have extensive industry experience. In countries like the US, airline pilots can provide primary flight training in their spare time, giving trainees the advantage of learning from seasoned professionals and ensuring higher safety standards.
