Geneva, Switzerland: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released its latest World Air Transport Statistics (WATS), offering a detailed overview of global air transport demand, capacity and operational performance through 2025, alongside data on airline fleets, busiest routes, employment and financial performance. The annual statistical collection draws on data from 1,315 airlines included in IATA's Annual Statistics collection, with more than 250 international airlines making specific data contributions to WATS. The report provides a broad picture of how the global aviation industry evolved in 2025, highlighting the continued expansion of premium travel, strong passenger growth in several emerging markets and major shifts in aircraft utilization. International premium-class travel recorded notable growth in 2025. The number of passengers flying business and first class reached 109.7 million, representing a 4.5% increase from the previous year. Premium travelers accounted for 5.5% of all international passengers during the year. Latin America recorded the strongest growth in premium-class travel, with passenger numbers increasing 22.1% to 4.0 million. Europe remained the largest premium travel market, recording 39.7 million premium-class passengers. However, when measured as a proportion of total passenger numbers, North America had the highest premium-class share at 10.4%, followed by the Middle East at 9.5%. Asia Pacific continued to dominate the world's busiest airport-pair rankings in 2025. Jeju International Airport and Seoul Gimpo International Airport in South Korea retained the top position, with 13.3 million passengers traveling between the two airports. The strength of domestic aviation in the region was evident across the rankings. Nine of the world's 10 busiest airport pairs were located in Asia Pacific, while the only route outside the region was the domestic connection between King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. All 10 of the world's busiest airport pairs were domestic routes. At the regional level, Cape Town International Airport and Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport formed Africa's busiest airport pair, carrying 3.4 million passengers in 2025. In Latin America, Bogotá's El Dorado International Airport and Medellín's José María Córdova International Airport ranked as the busiest airport pair, with 3.5 million passengers. Europe's busiest airport connection remained the route between Barcelona's Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport and Palma de Mallorca, carrying 2.1 million passengers. Meanwhile, Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Malmö Airport recorded the fastest growth among European airport pairs, with passenger numbers jumping 85% to 271,031. In North America, New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport were the busiest domestic airport pairs, with 2.2 million passengers. JFK and London Heathrow ranked as the busiest international airport pair from North America, carrying 2.1 million passengers. The United States remained the world's largest passenger market in 2025, recording 890.1 million passengers arriving in or departing from the country. However, passenger numbers grew only 1.6% from 2024, the slowest growth among the world's 10 largest passenger markets. China retained second place with 776.1 million passengers, an annual increase of 4.8%. The United Kingdom ranked third with 269.7 million passengers, followed by Spain with 252.7 million and Japan with 223.5 million. India ranked sixth among the world's biggest passenger markets, recording 218.2 million passengers in 2025, up 3.3% year on year. Italy followed with 187.3 million passengers, while Germany recorded 163.8 million. France and Türkiye rounded out the top 10, with 152.6 million and 129.3 million passengers, respectively. Several Central Asian markets posted particularly strong growth. Kazakhstan recorded a 40% increase in passenger numbers to 18.1 million, making it one of the fastest-growing markets globally. Uzbekistan handled 12.5 million passengers, representing 16.9% growth from the previous year. Outside Central Asia, Vietnam also recorded significant expansion. The country handled 80.9 million passengers in 2025, an increase of 14.8% compared with 2024. IATA's figures count scheduled passengers originating or terminating in each country. Domestic journeys are counted once, while international journeys are counted in both the country of origin and the destination country. The WATS data also highlights changes in the aircraft fleet and how different aircraft types are being utilized. Newer, more fuel-efficient widebody aircraft have expanded their presence in global operations since 2019, while older aircraft types have seen reduced utilization. Boeing 787 operations increased 40.8% between 2019 and 2025, with the aircraft operating 795,000 flights in 2025 compared with 564,000 in 2019. Airbus A350 operations more than doubled over the same period, rising 117.4% from 200,000 to 434,000 flights. In contrast, Airbus A380 operations declined 24.4%, from 119,000 flights in 2019 to 90,000 in 2025. Narrowbody aircraft continued to dominate global airline operations. Boeing 737 aircraft, including all variants, remained the most widely used aircraft family, operating 10.8 million flights in 2025. This was a 12% increase from 2024 and represented a 3.1% increase compared with 2019. The Airbus A320 ranked second with 8.7 million flights in 2025, compared with 8.1 million in 2019, an increase of 7.6%. The Airbus A321 recorded 4.2 million flights, significantly higher than the 2.6 million flights recorded in 2019, representing growth of 61.6%. Embraer's ERJ 170/190 family operated 2.7 million flights in 2025, compared with 2.6 million in 2019, an increase of 2.8%. Meanwhile, Airbus A319 operations fell 34.3%, from 2.1 million flights in 2019 to 1.4 million in 2025. The Airbus A220 recorded one of the most dramatic increases in utilization. The aircraft family operated 530,000 flights in 2025, compared with only 61,000 in 2019, representing a 770.4% increase as the newer-generation narrowbody continued to expand its presence in airline fleets. The latest WATS data points to a global aviation market that continues to evolve across passenger demand, premium travel and fleet composition. While the United States remained the world's largest passenger market and Asia Pacific dominated the busiest airport-pair rankings, rapidly growing markets in Central Asia and Southeast Asia also emerged as important contributors to global traffic growth. At the same time, the rise in Boeing 787, Airbus A350 and A220 utilization, alongside declining Airbus A380 and A319 operations, reflects the industry's gradual shift toward newer aircraft and changing airline fleet strategies.

The investigation also identified weaknesses in Voepass's safety culture, flight-data monitoring, technical reporting and regulatory oversight. CENIPA issued several safety recommendations, while ATR and Brazil's ANAC introduced measures following the accident. Vinhedo, Brazil: Brazil's Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention Center (CENIPA) has released its final investigation report into the August 9, 2024 crash of a Voepass ATR 72-212A in Vinhedo, São Paulo, concluding that severe icing, an inoperative airframe de-icing system, failures to follow established procedures and weaknesses in the airline's safety culture combined to cause the fatal loss of control. The ATR 72-212A, registration PS-VPB, was operating Voepass Flight 2283 from Cascavel to São Paulo/Guarulhos with four crew members and 58 passengers. It departed at 14:58 UTC and crashed at about 16:22 UTC in Vinhedo. All 62 people aboard were killed. CENIPA found that the aircraft was dispatched with its Airframe De-Icing system inoperative and that the forecast route conditions were conducive to severe icing. The investigation found that the operator's Operations Control Center, flight dispatcher and captain did not adequately assess the forecast conditions, while the aircraft's de-icing system failure was not properly recorded in the technical logbook. The report also identified a known windshield-wiper failure affecting the first officer. During the flight, the Electronic Ice Detector repeatedly indicated ice accumulation after the aircraft climbed through FL130. The aircraft remained at FL170 and progressively accumulated ice, increasing aerodynamic drag and degrading performance. The Airframe De-Icing system was switched on and off several times, but the prescribed checklist procedure for the failure was not followed. The aircraft's Aircraft Performance Monitoring (APM) system issued eight CRUISE SPEED LOW advisories, followed by DEGRADED PERFORMANCE and, shortly before the stall, INCREASE SPEED alerts. CENIPA found that the crew did not properly respond to these warnings by increasing speed, changing altitude or leaving the icing conditions. The investigation also found that the crew continued the flight despite knowing about the de-icing system failure and the severe icing forecast. The pilots did not request an immediate descent, declare an emergency or take other effective measures to escape the icing environment. CENIPA said informal, non-operational cockpit conversations also reduced the crew's attention to the aircraft's deteriorating condition and cockpit alerts. As the aircraft's performance deteriorated, its angle of attack increased until the Stall Warning System activated. Instead of applying the prescribed stall-recovery procedure, the pilots made nose-up control inputs, further increasing the angle of attack. When the stick pusher activated, opposing control inputs caused the pitch uncoupling mechanism to disconnect the left and right elevators, after which the aircraft lost control. The aircraft entered a flat spin, completing five left-hand rotations over approximately 68 seconds. Its descent rate reached about 14,000 feet per minute, with pitch varying from approximately +10° to -62° and left bank angles from about 10° to 75°. The crew attempted to counter the rotation with right rudder input, but the rudder's effectiveness was severely reduced by the aircraft's extremely high angle of attack. Both engines continued operating normally. CENIPA found no evidence of an engine failure and attributed a brief rise in No. 1 engine temperature during the spin to reduced airflow and mass airflow caused by the aircraft's flight condition. The aircraft struck the ground at high vertical speed and relatively low horizontal speed and was destroyed. A post-impact fire further damaged the wreckage. CENIPA concluded that the accident resulted from a complex chain of technical, human and organizational factors. The identified contributing factors included flight-control handling, attention, pilot attitude, severe meteorological conditions, Crew Resource Management, work-group culture, organizational culture, organizational processes, managerial oversight and deficiencies in regulatory oversight. The report found that repeated APM warnings had become normalized among the operator's pilots. Frequent CRUISE SPEED LOW advisories were increasingly treated as routine, reducing crews' perception of the associated risk. CENIPA also identified previous flights involving airspeed reductions, ice accumulation, de-icing system resets and APM alerts, but found that the company's Flight Data Monitoring information was not systematically used to identify and mitigate these recurring risks. The investigation found broader weaknesses in Voepass's Safety Management System, including inadequate hazard identification, insufficient use of flight-data information, weak formal reporting of technical discrepancies and a practice of verbally reporting problems to maintenance personnel without recording them in the technical logbook. CENIPA said these practices prevented effective corrective action and contributed to the normalization of operational deviations. The investigation also identified shortcomings in ANAC's regulatory oversight. Previous audits had detected technical, maintenance and safety-management weaknesses, but CENIPA concluded that ANAC's risk-management process was insufficient to support the strategic decisions needed to control the risks. CENIPA identified a potential design-related issue with the APM system, classifying the increased speed alert as a caution despite its activation near the minimum maneuvering speed in icing conditions. The investigation recommended reassessing the alert classification and considering an upgrade from CAUTION to WARNING. It also recommended reviewing APM alert logic and prioritization, particularly where degraded performance and increased speed alerts could occur together. Other recommendations called for ANAC to review operators' procedures for SPEED BUG adjustments, strengthen oversight of flight-data monitoring and risk management, and disseminate the accident's lessons across commercial aviation. Following the crash, ATR introduced APM software Version 2.0 and initiated maintenance-procedure improvements. ANAC strengthened Upset Prevention and Recovery Training guidance and expanded mandatory Flight Data Monitoring requirements to additional aircraft. The regulator also placed Voepass under intensified surveillance before suspending its Air Operator Certificate and Maintenance Organization Certificate in March 2025. After administrative proceedings, both certificates were revoked on June 24, 2025, with financial sanctions imposed. The CENIPA report is a Final Report, not a preliminary report, although its cover carries the wording "Draft Final Report." It provides the completed investigation findings, contributing factors, safety recommendations and corrective actions. CENIPA's final conclusion is that the crash was not caused by a single failure. Severe icing created the hazardous conditions, while the inoperative de-icing system, inadequate crew response to repeated performance warnings, failure to follow stall-recovery procedures and deeper weaknesses in the operator's safety culture and oversight combined to result in the loss of control and deaths of all 62 people aboard.

According to the government, India currently has 41 DGCA-approved Flying Training Organisations operating across 63 flying bases, with a fleet of more than 400 training aircraft. Under DGCA requirements, FTOs are required to maintain an aircraft-to-instructor-to-student ratio of 1:1:10. Based on the existing infrastructure, the country's approved FTO network has the capacity to train approximately 3,500 students at any given time. Czech Army UH-1Y Venom Crashes At Náměšť Air Base, Killing One Soldier & Injuring Four

Milan, Italy: A LOT Polish Airlines Boeing 737-8 MAX operating from Palma de Mallorca, Spain, to Warsaw, Poland, was diverted to Milan Malpensa early Thursday, July 23, after a pilot reportedly became incapacitated in flight. The aircraft was operating LOT flight LO6212 from Palma de Mallorca to Warsaw. The aircraft, registered SP-LVO, was cruising at approximately Flight Level 360 when the flight crew decided to divert to Milan after the captain reportedly became incapacitated. The aircraft subsequently landed safely on Runway 35R at Milan Malpensa, with the diversion understood to have taken place shortly after 4 a.m. local time. The emergency response was activated at around 4:05 a.m., after the commander suffered a medical problem. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 landed at Malpensa at approximately 4:30 a.m., with ambulances, medical vehicles and firefighters dispatched to meet the aircraft. Reports said one of the pilots had reportedly fainted or lost consciousness in the cockpit shortly after takeoff. The aircraft had been in the air for less than an hour when it diverted to Milan and emergency responders included five paramedics, three ambulances and two medical vehicles. The affected pilot was reportedly assessed by medical personnel and did not require major medical treatment. No passenger injuries were reported. LOT Polish Airlines spokesperson Krzysztof Moczulski confirmed that the aircraft was diverted to Milan for medical reasons, the captain requested medical assistance because of the illness of a crew member. The aircraft reportedly continued beyond the end of Runway 05 during the landing before leaving the runway area. Early reports described the aircraft as having veered into the surrounding area beyond the runway, while images and videos circulating after the incident showed the Embraer E170 off the paved runway surface. Emergency personnel responded to the occurrence, and all passengers and crew were safely evacuated or disembarked. The NSIB confirmed that there were 63 passengers and five crew members on board, correcting earlier media reports that had cited different passenger figures. Enugu Air confirmed the incident in a statement, describing it as a runway excursion after landing. The airline said all passengers and crew had safely disembarked and that there were no injuries or casualties. The incident involved a de Havilland DHC-3 Otter that had departed from Lake Union in Seattle. According to Kenmore Air, the aircraft was involved in an accident in Shallow Bay near Sucia Island at around 5:15 p.m. PDT on July 23, or approximately 0015 GMT on July 24. The U.S. Coast Guard said the aircraft made an emergency landing before catching fire. An image released by the Coast Guard showed the seaplane burning while in the water at the crash site. Sucia Island is part of Washington state's San Juan Islands, an archipelago located north of Seattle and close to the Canadian border. The Coast Guard said multiple assets were deployed to support the rescue effort, with Canadian and local responders also joining the operation. Several people were transported to local hospitals for medical evaluation and treatment. Kenmore Air confirmed that 10 passengers and one pilot were aboard the aircraft. The airline said two injured passengers were transported to medical facilities in Bellingham, while another two injured passengers were taken to Orcas Island for evaluation and treatment. Seven additional passengers were taken to a U.S. Coast Guard base for further evaluation. Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

START: India is emerging as the fastest-growing aviation market worldwide, yet it faces a significant hurdle: a shortage of trained technical personnel, including pilots, engineers, and technicians. This challenge is expected to become more acute as Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles enter the market within the next year or two, creating an additional need for pilots. The issue stems largely from inadequate planning and foresight by the authorities. Consequently, many aspiring Indian pilots are pursuing training in countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bosnia, Montenegro, and the Philippines. In fact, approximately 700 out of every 1,000 commercial pilot licenses issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are earned abroad. India’s Potential as a Global Hub for Aviation Education Considering India’s expansive geography and favorable weather for flying, the country is ideally suited to be a global hub for aviation education. In the 1980s and 1990s, students from nations such as Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and several African countries came to India for flight training. Today, the trend has reversed, with Indian students going overseas for pilot education. One key reason is the slow pace of domestic training programs and the cumbersome security clearance process for foreign students, which discourages them from enrolling in India. Competition from International Flight Schools Meanwhile, nations like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have established world-class flight schools. Students from neighboring Arab countries now mostly prefer the United States, Canada, and Europe for training, despite these regions lacking ideal weather for primary flight instruction. Domestic regulations further complicate matters. The DGCA allows a flight school to operate only if it meets minimum requirements for aircraft and paid-up capital, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) imposes additional capital requirements. These rules do not guarantee quality education but are often sufficient to prevent many capable entrepreneurs from opening flight schools. By contrast, an Indian entrepreneur started a flight school in New Zealand with a single rented aircraft, which has since expanded to a fleet of over 20 planes and now attracts Indian students. Shortage of Trainer Aircraft The shortage of trainer aircraft is another pressing challenge. In the 1970s, Prof. David Hazen of Princeton University, invited by the Indian government to establish the first aeronautical department at IIT Kanpur, outlined a roadmap for India to achieve self-reliance in aviation training. However, progress has been slow. The DGCA developed the Swati light aircraft, manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), but a fatal accident during testing brought the program to an end. Similarly, the Hansa trainer created by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) was rejected by most flight schools. Lessons from the Pushpak Aircraft A comparison with the Pushpak aircraft is instructive. Manufactured in the 1950s, HAL produced 160 Pushpaks, which served India reliably for over 50 years and maintained an excellent safety record. In 1968, the government gifted one Pushpak each to Singapore and Malaysia to help them establish their flight training programs. The Pushpak’s success was largely due to it being modeled closely on the proven US Aeronca Chief. NAL later developed the next-generation Hansa (NG Hansa), which was showcased at the 2020 Wings India airshow, but production has yet to start, and setting up the necessary infrastructure would still take several years even if action begins immediately. Global Trainer Aircraft Shortages and LSAs The shortage of trainer aircraft is not unique to India. Major manufacturers such as Cessna and Piper had slowed production, underestimating demand, and now struggle to meet global requirements. Other countries have tackled this problem by incorporating Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs) into flight training. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, LSAs are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and widely used in the US and EU for commercial pilot instruction. However, Indian regulations currently do not permit LSAs for commercial pilot training. Despite being equipped with only a magnetic compass, pilots trained on Pushpaks have gone on to fly advanced aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A320. Allowing LSAs in India could reduce aircraft shortages, encourage domestic manufacturing, generate employment, and attract foreign investment. Lack of Experienced Flight Instructors The lack of experienced flight instructors adds another layer of difficulty. Rapid growth in airlines such as Indigo and Air India has led many instructors to leave training schools for better pay, career progression, and recognition in commercial aviation. This high turnover leaves less-experienced instructors teaching students, unlike other professional fields where teachers usually have extensive industry experience. In countries like the US, airline pilots can provide primary flight training in their spare time, giving trainees the advantage of learning from seasoned professionals and ensuring higher safety standards.
