Las Vegas, United States: US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a first-of-its-kind Special Airworthiness Market Survey Certificate to BETA Technologies, allowing flight operations with its ALIA eVTOL aircraft, designated A250, for market-survey purposes.

The FAA said the certificate follows a careful review by its safety experts and authorises BETA’s A250 to conduct flight operations with operators and participants for market surveys. It also expands the geographic scope of BETA’s operations, allowing the aircraft to fly in more environments and gather additional data.

The announcement represents the latest move by the Trump administration to advance advanced air mobility (AAM) and support the integration of next-generation aircraft into the US national airspace. The FAA said safe integration of AAM aircraft is essential for maintaining US leadership in aviation innovation, with the technology having the potential to reshape rural and urban transportation, cargo operations, and medical and military transportation.

“Incredible things are happening in aviation thanks to President Trump and his commitment to innovation. The FAA’s special airworthiness certification of BETA’s A250 aircraft is another critical step towards enabling the future of flight in America,” Duffy said.

“I want to thank our incredible safety team at the FAA for their hard work and congratulate BETA on reaching this milestone. From bringing the next generation of aircraft online to modernizing our nation’s air traffic control system we are delivering generational wins for the flying public at record speed,” he added.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the agency would continue working with US innovators while maintaining the safety standards underpinning the country’s aviation system.

“The FAA is committed to working with American innovators to safely integrate these new aircraft into our national airspace, while maintaining the rigorous safety standards that have made the United States a global leader in aviation,” Bedford said.

BETA Technologies Founder and CEO Kyle Clark said the authorization moves vertical flight closer to potential users while building on the company’s previous milestones.

“This authorization brings vertical flight closer to the people and places that will put it to work, building on BETA’s track record of industry firsts. We completed the first crewed eVTOL transition flight in 2024, were first to receive market survey authorization for our CTOL, and now we’re first with our VTOL,” Clark said.

“Operators can now experience the A250 firsthand and begin planning how it fits into their businesses, from connecting communities to moving people and goods at a lower cost. That’s an important step toward commercial adoption, and we’re grateful to the FAA for developing the regulatory framework that makes these operations possible,” he added.

The FAA linked the certificate to the administration’s broader eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), which Secretary Duffy unveiled in March to test advanced air mobility aircraft and their real-world applications. The eight selected projects span 28 states and involve aircraft manufacturers, operators and state partners.

The projects cover urban air taxi services, regional passenger transportation including short takeoff and landing aircraft, cargo and logistics networks, emergency medical response operations, autonomous flight technologies, and offshore and energy-sector transportation.

According to the FAA, the eIPP is a first-of-its-kind initiative outlined in President Trump’s Unleashing Drone Dominance Executive Order. The programme is intended to create one of the world’s largest real-world testing environments for next-generation aircraft, with potential to create jobs, connect communities and strengthen US leadership in aviation.

Duffy was also scheduled to discuss the BETA authorization at the National Business Aviation Association convention in Las Vegas on October 21, where he would highlight the Department of Transportation’s progress in transforming the national airspace.

The FAA said $12.5 billion from the Working Families Tax Cut Act is supporting modernization of the US air traffic control system through new telecommunications lines, radios and radars, and electronic flight strips. The Department said all 13 modernization workstreams are on track.

The FAA further noted that Duffy and the agency launched the nation’s first-ever Advanced Air Mobility strategy last year to unlock the future of flight. The strategy and its accompanying action plan contain 40 recommendations aimed at safely and efficiently supporting AAM operations.

The Special Airworthiness Market Survey Certificate marks a significant regulatory step for BETA’s A250, giving operators and participants an opportunity to conduct market-survey operations across an expanded geographic scope while the FAA continues its work on integrating advanced air mobility aircraft into the national airspace.
