Women have been breaking barriers in aviation for more than a century. In 1910, French aviator Raymonde de Laroche became the world’s first licensed female pilot, inspiring generations to take to the skies. In the United States, Amelia Earhart made history in 1932 as the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, becoming a global icon for female aviators. In Russia, Marina Raskova emerged as a legendary pilot during World War II, helping form the all-female combat regiments known as the “Night Witches.” Sarla Thukral became the first Indian woman to earn a pilot’s license in 1936 at the age of 21. She trained on a Gypsy Moth aircraft and paved the way for others, including Prem Mathur, who in 1951 became the first woman to fly a commercial aircraft in India. These pioneers laid the foundation for today’s progress, where India now has one of the highest proportions of female pilots globally, far surpassing the world average. Despite these advances, technical and leadership roles in aviation such as aircraft maintenance engineering, ground operations, and senior management have long been male-dominated. Today, however, new milestones in India and Malaysia are demonstrating how women are reshaping every aspect of the aviation industry. India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has inducted its first-ever all-women batch of aircraft maintenance engineers (AMEs). On September 15, 2025, the airline welcomed 33 women technicians who completed a week-long induction program featuring mentoring sessions by senior leaders and female engineers. The initiative reflects IndiGo’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), focusing on placing women in technical and leadership roles beyond traditional cabin crew or customer service positions. IndiGo’s workforce already demonstrates significant female representation, with women making up 44.8% of its employees. The airline employs 791 female pilots, accounting for 15.28% of its total pilot cadre well above the global average of about 5%, according to the International Society of Women Airline Pilots. The airline also posted an impressive Technical Dispatch Reliability of 99.89% in FY25, underlining that diversity initiatives are aligned with operational excellence. This move is particularly significant in India, where aviation is growing rapidly and skilled engineers are in high demand. By positioning women in maintenance and technical operations, IndiGo is not only addressing workforce gaps but also challenging long-standing gender stereotypes in aviation engineering. Just days later, on September 18, 2025, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) made headlines by operating its first all-women flight, MH2610, from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu. The flight was staffed entirely by women across every touchpoint: cockpit crew, cabin attendants, engineers, ground handlers, security, and check-in staff. As reported by Bernama, Malaysia Airlines emphasized that women currently make up 36% of the Malaysia Aviation Group’s workforce, exceeding the IATA 25by2025 initiative target, which calls for at least 25% female representation in aviation leadership roles by 2025. The airline described the all-women flight as a symbolic milestone aimed at inspiring women in the industry and young aspirants considering aviation careers. MAS stated that the initiative demonstrates “the sky has no limits” when it comes to women’s capabilities in aviation. Both IndiGo’s engineering initiative and MAS’s symbolic flight highlight the changing face of aviation, especially in Asia. Traditionally, women in aviation were most visible as cabin crew, while technical and command positions remained male-dominated. But these initiatives show women stepping into areas once considered inaccessible: maintenance hangars, cockpits, engineering bays, and executive offices. Globally, airlines and regulators have struggled to increase women’s representation in aviation. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) launched 25by2025 to push for more female leaders, yet progress remains uneven. The U.S., for instance, has less than 6% female pilots, and Europe records similar figures. India, however, is an outlier. It leads the world with over 15% women pilots, and airlines like IndiGo, Air India have been steadily increasing female participation in technical roles. Analysts suggest that India’s early pioneers like Sarla Thukral created an aspirational path, and the country’s booming aviation sector is now providing opportunities to convert ambition into careers.

North Carolina, United States: A small private plane crashed in a field near Iotla Valley Elementary School in Macon County on Thursday afternoon, killing all three people on board. Authorities have confirmed that the deceased include award-winning Nashville songwriter Brett James, 57. The Cirrus SR22T aircraft (tail number N218VB) went down shortly after 3 p.m. local time on September 18, just west of the school grounds in Franklin. The aircraft is registered to James and had departed from John C. Tune Airport in Nashville, Tennessee, earlier that day, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Macon County Sheriff’s Office and local media reports confirmed the fatalities. Songwriter Brett James, whose career spanned more than two decades, was among those killed. He was known for penning hits including “Jesus, Take the Wheel” (Carrie Underwood) and “When the Sun Goes Down” (Kenny Chesney). James’s passing has sent shockwaves through the Nashville music community, where he was regarded as one of the most versatile and prolific writers of his generation. His songs, often blending country and pop influences, earned him Grammy Awards and recognition from both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. The identities of the two other victims have not yet been officially released. While the crash site was close to Iotla Valley Elementary School, officials confirmed that no students or staff were injured. The Macon County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the wreckage was located in a field adjacent to the school and did not impact school property. Parents and staff were quickly notified, and emergency crews secured the area. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a joint investigation into the cause of the accident. The North Carolina Highway Patrol assisted local law enforcement in securing the crash site. Bangkok, Thailand: Thai Airways International is preparing to retire its First Class service within the next two to three years, opting instead to invest in an upgraded Business Class as part of a sweeping fleet and product modernization plan. The national carrier’s Chief Executive Officer, Chai Eamsiri, confirmed the decision during a recent briefing, framing it as a move toward long-term efficiency and competitiveness. “We plan to eliminate First Class and replace it with enhanced Business Class cabins. It is part of our strategic plan to improve our product consistency and align with passenger demand,” he said. At present, Thai Airways operates a mixed product that includes Economy, Premium Economy, Business (“Royal Silk”), and First Class (“Royal First”) on select Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The airline intends to streamline this into a three-class offering: Economy, Premium Economy, and an elevated Business Class. The airline will gradually refurbish its wide-body fleet, particularly the Boeing 777-300ERs, to remove First Class suites and replace them with a next-generation Business product. This new “Business Plus” concept is expected to include more spacious seating in the front row, enhanced privacy potentially with doors and upgraded amenities. While First Class is being phased out, Thai Airways aims to bridge the gap by enriching its Business Class service.The airline has already begun introducing premium amenities into Business, including caviar service on select routes. This aligns with a wider industry trend in which airlines consolidate luxury offerings into an expanded Business Class product rather than maintaining costly, limited-use First Class cabins. Passenger demand also played a decisive role.The modern Business Class products now rival traditional First Class in terms of comfort and privacy, making the higher-cost cabin less attractive and less financially sustainable for carriers. The airline reported a 22 percent year-on-year increase in passenger numbers compared to August 2024. Its load factor reached 91%, up from 89% in the same period last year, reflecting higher seat occupancy across its network. Between January and August 2025, Etihad carried 14.2 million travellers, an 18 percent rise from the same period in 2024. The average load factor for the year so far has remained strong at 88%, positioning the airline among the most efficient operators in the Middle East. Etihad currently operates a fleet of 112 aircraft, a mix of wide-body and narrow-body jets serving global destinations. In August, the carrier added a new Airbus A321LR to its operations. This long-range narrow-body aircraft is equipped with wide-body-style premium cabins, aligning with Etihad’s strategy to improve comfort while maintaining operational flexibility. The new addition reflects the airline’s focus on sustainability and efficiency, offering the ability to serve medium-haul markets while preserving the premium service standards for which the carrier is known. New Delhi, India: Indian airports may soon face financial penalties for service lapses such as baggage delays, long queues, and unhygienic toilets. The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has issued a consultation paper proposing to link airport tariffs including user development fees (UDF) with measurable service quality standards. The draft framework applies to airports handling more than 3.5 million passengers annually. It sets benchmarks for maximum wait times at terminal entry points, check-in counters, security screening, immigration desks, and baggage belts. Failure to meet these standards could result in reduced tariffs, while airports exceeding them may receive incentives. AERA’s proposal also focuses on the upkeep of basic passenger facilities, including clean washrooms, seating, and trolleys. Adoption of technology, such as Digi Yatra and immigration e-gates, is part of the criteria aimed at improving efficiency and passenger experience. “Introducing a structured service quality framework will ensure passengers receive consistent and improved service levels across major airports,” AERA said in the consultation paper. Independent third-party audits will be carried out to verify compliance, and performance data will be published to maintain transparency. Airports handling over six million passengers annually will be placed in a separate category, recognizing their higher traffic volumes and operational complexity. AERA has invited comments from stakeholders, including airlines and passenger groups, until September 24, 2025.

Schiphol Airport has warned travelers to brace for delays, cancellations, or changes to their flights, advising passengers to closely monitor flight status before heading to the airport. KLM confirmed that it has already cancelled dozens of flights ahead of the strike to limit the scale of disruption. According to a report in NL Times, the airline has proactively adjusted its schedule after a similar action last week, when a two-hour strike led to the cancellation of over 100 flights and affected nearly 27,000 passengers. Unions representing the workers say the industrial action stems from disputes over wages, workload, and job classifications. New Delhi, India: SpiceJet, one of India’s leading low-cost carriers, has once again delayed salary payments for a significant portion of its workforce, According to the report by PTI senior employees who are earning above ₹55,000 per month are affected. While junior staff reportedly received their August salaries on time, senior employees, including Assistant Managers and above, are facing delays of up to 15 days, according to company sources. The airline has cited a “phased disbursement schedule” as the reason for the delay, stating that payments for higher-earning employees are staggered during lean periods. The delays affect a substantial number of employees, with the airline employing 6,484 staff, of whom 4,894 are permanent employees. Reports suggest that the salary delays predominantly impact employees in managerial and senior technical roles. These delays come at a time when the airline is navigating financial pressures, including a net loss of ₹238 crore reported in the June quarter of 2025. During 2024-25, SpiceJet provided an interest-free advance to Ajay Singh, who is the Chairman and Managing Director, an amount of Rs 32 crore for a five-year period in accordance with the Nomination and Remuneration Committee and board-approved policy of the company, as per the annual report. "The company has adjusted the advance from the salary of subsequent months (April and May 2025), as per the company's policy. Further, this advance is not prejudicial to the interest of the company," the report said. The Airline said that losses are mainly due to costs linked to several grounded aircrafts and expenses for bringing them back into service. It has only 21 aircraft operational out of 56 and 35 grounded. Employees impacted by the delayed payments have expressed concerns over financial planning, especially as the delayed salaries coincide with ongoing personal and household obligations. While junior employees received their payments on schedule, the staggered payments for senior staff have raised questions about employee morale and retention. Last September, the airline raised ₹3,000 crore through a Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP), with plans to use the funds to operationalize grounded aircraft, purchase new planes, invest in technology, and enter new markets. Despite these intentions, progress has been slow, and a substantial number of aircraft remain grounded.

SpiceJet Delays Senior Staff Salaries Amid Financial Strain and Operational Challenges

Washington, United States: The U.S. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed a civil penalty of $3.1 million against Boeing for what it described as “widespread quality system violations” linked to the company’s 737 production line. The enforcement action covers violations identified between September 2023 and February 2024 at Boeing’s Renton, Washington facility and at Spirit AeroSystems’ plant in Wichita, Kansas. According to the FAA, Boeing presented two aircraft as airworthy for certification even though they did not meet all applicable safety requirements, and in some cases pressured employees to approve work to meet production deadlines. “The safety of the flying public is our top priority, and we will hold Boeing accountable for meeting regulatory standards,” the FAA said in a statement, noting that Boeing has 30 days to respond to the proposed penalty. The proposed fine comes months after a highly publicized incident in January 2024 when a door plug panel blew off an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 shortly after takeoff, forcing an emergency landing. One flight attendant and 7 passengers received minor injuries, the captain, the first officer, 3 flight attendants, and 164 passengers were uninjured and the airplane sustained substantial damage. The event triggered a temporary grounding of MAX 9 jets and intensified scrutiny of Boeing’s quality control processes. A detailed FAA investigation uncovered hundreds of quality lapses, including incomplete documentation, improper inspections, and non-compliant parts. The agency also flagged systemic problems within Boeing’s Organization Designation Authorization (ODA) program, which allows company employees to perform certain certification tasks on behalf of the FAA. Boeing, in its response, said it is reviewing the FAA’s notice and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening quality oversight,“We have implemented a comprehensive safety and quality improvement plan, including expanded employee training and enhanced supplier oversight,” a Boeing spokesperson said, adding that the company will continue cooperating with regulators. Boeing has until mid-October to formally respond, after which the FAA could negotiate a settlement or pursue enforcement proceedings. Alongside the regulatory action the FAA has approved Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) Phase 2D for Boeing’s 777-9 model, advancing the aircraft’s certification process. This phase includes community noise tests to be carried out in Glasgow, Montana. So far, the 777X test fleet (including the 777-9) has logged over 1,500 flights and nearly 4,200 flight hours. The next major step TIA Phase 3 will include evaluations of the auxiliary power unit (APU) performance and overall stability, although a start date for Phase 3 has not yet been announced. The 777-9 is currently expected to be delivered first to Lufthansa in mid-2026.
