Gundelsheim, Germany: Two people were killed after a two-seat ultralight aircraft crashed and burned in a vineyard near Gundelsheim in Germany’s Baden-Württemberg state on 4 October 2026, shortly before noon.

According to the Heilbronn Police, the crew had contacted the nearby airfield shortly before 12:00 local time and announced that it was preparing to land. For reasons that remain unknown, the aircraft went around during the landing approach before striking a fence and then colliding with a tree. It subsequently crashed into an adjacent vineyard, where it caught fire and was completely destroyed. Both occupants died in the accident. Police said there were no other people aboard.

The crash occurred near Hofgut Hohschön, close to the Gundelsheim airfield. Stuttgarter Zeitung reported that the aircraft came down about 200–300 metres after striking the fence and tree. Firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze. The victims were recovered after specialists confirmed that a pyrotechnic device associated with the aircraft’s whole-aircraft rescue system had already detonated, removing the potential explosion hazard.

The aircraft’s registration was destroyed or rendered unreadable by the fire, initially preventing investigators from establishing its identity and origin. A 5 October update from Deutsche Presse-Agentur, Germany’s national news agency reported that police had subsequently determined that the aircraft had departed from Arnstadt in Thuringia. The identities of the two victims, however, remained unconfirmed at that stage. The wreckage was collected on Sunday evening and taken to a local municipal facility for further examination.

Police said the reason for the go-around and subsequent crash remains unknown. The Heilbronn Criminal Police are investigating the accident, while the Heilbronn Public Prosecutor’s Office has commissioned an expert to assist with the investigation. Specialists from the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police Office also examined the pyrotechnic component of the rescue system.

There is currently no official confirmation of the aircraft’s manufacturer or specific model, operator, registration or a mechanical failure as the cause of the accident. Investigators have not publicly attributed the crash to a technical problem or to the rescue-system activation. The Heilbronn Police said the investigation into how the crash occurred remains ongoing.
