This Christmas Eve, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) will continue its popular tradition of tracing Santa Claus’s flights across the world, enchanting families worldwide with real-time updates and high-tech interactivity.

The operation uses an advanced mix of radar, satellites, and fighter planes. NORAD’s radar detects Santa’s sleigh as it leaves the North Pole. Infrared sensors on satellites detect the heat from Rudolph’s bright red nose, making Santa visible throughout his voyage. If necessary, NORAD fighter pilots will follow Santa’s sleigh into permitted airspace.

Families can track Santa’s trip with NORAD’s special Santa Tracker website and mobile app, which includes interactive maps, festive films, and a live progress indicator. For those who prefer a more personal touch, nearly 1,500 volunteers answer phone calls and emails to communicate Santa’s present position with eager youngsters all around the world.

NORAD’s Santa tracking tradition originated in 1955, when a misprinted phone number in a Sears commercial instructed youngsters to contact the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) instead of Santa Claus. Colonel Harry Shoup, who was on duty at the time, turned the situation into a joyful tradition by responding to callers with updates on Santa’s travels. This charitable effort grew into the well-known yearly event that millions of people now enjoy.

NORAD’s social media sites, including X, are alive with updates and holiday content. Visit the NORAD Santa Tracker or read their most recent updates to stay up to date and share the joy with loved ones.

While Santa’s voyage is the highlight, NORAD adds that this program also showcases the precision and dependability of their advanced tracking technology, which are used for essential military objectives year-round.
