Athens, Greece: A Danish pilot and a Greek fire service liaison officer were killed after two firefighting helicopters collided mid-air while battling a major wildfire west of Athens on Sunday, marking another tragedy as Greece faces multiple fast-moving wildfires amid extreme weather conditions. The collision occurred over the Psatha area near Porto Germeno, west of the Greek capital, where emergency crews were battling a wind-driven wildfire that has been burning since Friday. According to Greek authorities, both helicopters were Bell firefighting helicopters operating on aerial water-dropping missions over the fire zone. Each helicopter carried two crew members. One aircraft crashed following the collision, killing its Danish pilot and a Greek fire service liaison officer. The second helicopter managed to make an emergency landing, and its occupants, a British pilot and a Greek crew member survived with minor injuries. Both survivors were transported to hospital for treatment. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased or the survivors. The exact cause of the mid-air collision remains under investigation. Officials have not indicated whether the helicopters made physical contact during water-dropping operations or while manoeuvring over the wildfire. No preliminary findings have been released, and investigators are expected to examine flight operations, communications and weather conditions in the area. The helicopters were supporting efforts to contain a rapidly spreading wildfire near Porto Germeno, a coastal community on the Gulf of Corinth. Strong, gusting winds significantly complicated firefighting operations, limiting aircraft movements and, at times, preventing helicopters and water bombers from safely collecting seawater for repeated drops. Nearly 500 firefighters supported by 23 aircraft were deployed to combat the blaze. The fire, which ignited near Agios Vasileios on Friday, spread quickly through dry forests toward Porto Germeno and surrounding mountainous terrain west of Athens. Authorities ordered evacuations for the communities of Kandili, Agia Skepi, and Toutouli as flames advanced. Earlier in the emergency, firefighters evacuated 254 people by sea on Friday and another 12 on Saturday, with maritime evacuations becoming the safest option after smoke and flames threatened the limited road access from coastal settlements. Wildfire meteorologist Theodore Giannaros estimated the blaze had affected approximately 40 to 50 square kilometres (15–19 square miles), although Greek authorities had not issued an official burn-area estimate. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed condolences following the accident. "The loss of the Greek coordinator and the Danish pilot at the time they were attempting the major fire in Porto Germeno fills us all with grief," Mitsotakis said in a statement. In a separate message, the Prime Minister also expressed his "deepest sorrow" over the deaths and extended condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of those killed while responding to the wildfire emergency. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also paid tribute to the crews, saying: "It takes a special courage to fly towards the flames." Greek authorities have launched an investigation into Sunday's helicopter collision. Officials are expected to determine the circumstances that led to the accident while aerial firefighting operations continue against multiple active wildfires across the country.

London, United Kingdom: The United Kingdom has launched a major £46.5 million (US$63.3 million) funding initiative aimed at accelerating the deployment of drones and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, marking one of the country’s largest commitments to advanced air mobility (AAM) and autonomous aviation technologies to date. The package, announced on May 5 by the Department for Transport (DfT), Home Office and the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), seeks to streamline drone regulations, support commercial eVTOL operations and strengthen drone security enforcement across British airspace. Under the programme, £26.5 million will be allocated to the CAA to modernise and simplify regulatory approvals for commercial drone operations. The funding is intended to reduce administrative bottlenecks that have slowed industry growth and help integrate drones into routine public and commercial services including emergency response, medical logistics, infrastructure inspections and supply chain operations. The initiative also aims to establish the regulatory framework required to introduce commercial flying taxi services in the UK from 2028. Authorities said drone operators will gain access to a streamlined digital application system designed to significantly reduce approval timelines and improve operational scalability. The move aligns with the UK CAA’s eVTOL Delivery Model published in September 2025, which confirmed SC-VTOL as the certification basis for future air taxi aircraft and outlined operational provisions for both day and night flights under visual and instrument flight rules. The remaining £20.5 million will fund the development of the UK’s first national Hybrid Remote ID system for drones, effectively a digital “number plate” for unmanned aircraft. The technology will broadcast a drone’s identity and live location during flight, allowing nearby compatible receivers and authorised agencies to monitor operations in real time. The system will also maintain historical flight records through a secure online platform, enabling law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute illegal or unsafe drone operators more efficiently. The government said the new identification network is aimed at addressing rising concerns surrounding rogue drone activity near airports, prisons, critical infrastructure and urban areas. Security Minister Dan Jarvis described the initiative as “a numberplate system for the skies,” adding that authorities would be able to identify operators violating aviation laws and remove illegal drones from UK airspace. UK Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Minister Keir Mather said the investment would support British innovation while ensuring safety and public confidence remain central to the expansion of autonomous aviation technologies. He stated that the programme would “unlock barriers to growth,” create jobs, lower emissions and reinforce Britain’s position as a global aviation leader. The company highlighted its ULTRA drone platform, which is already being deployed in challenging operational environments including Ukraine and remote logistics missions across the Scottish Highlands and Islands. The funding package forms part of a broader UK aviation and decarbonisation strategy that includes £2.3 billion for green aircraft development programmes and an additional £63 million for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) initiatives. Officials say the latest investment demonstrates the government’s intention to position Britain as an “aviation superpower” in next-generation aerospace technologies including drones, autonomous cargo aircraft and urban air mobility systems. While the announcement has been widely welcomed by industry stakeholders, analysts note that the UK still faces competition from the United States, China and the United Arab Emirates, all of which are investing aggressively in advanced air mobility ecosystems, certification frameworks and commercial eVTOL infrastructure. Aircraft and Flight Information The aircraft involved was a Beechcraft B200 Super King Air, registered to Netherlands-based Zeusch Aviation. According to flight data and initial confirmations from the operator, the aircraft was conducting a medical transport mission at the time of the crash. The flight was reportedly en route to the Netherlands, having earlier stopped in Greece and Croatia. It was designated as flight SUZ1. The incident occurred moments after the aircraft departed from Runway 05 at Southend Airport in Essex. Witnesses and preliminary flight path data indicate the aircraft became airborne before sharply banking left, inverting, and descending rapidly to the ground, resulting in a fireball and thick black smoke visible from several kilometers away.
