Moscow, Russia: Russian air defenses intercepted nearly 60 Ukrainian drones approaching Moscow in the early hours of Monday, prompting the temporary suspension of flights at all four major airports serving the Russian capital before operations were later restored, Russian authorities said. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram that almost 60 drones heading toward the capital were shot down overnight. He did not provide further details on the scale of the attack or potential damage but said emergency services had been dispatched to locations where drone debris fell. Russia's aviation watchdog, Rosaviatsia, temporarily halted operations at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Zhukovsky airports as a safety precaution during the attack. The agency later announced that flight operations had resumed after authorities determined conditions were safe. Officials did not immediately disclose how long the restrictions remained in effect or whether flights were delayed or cancelled. At roughly the same time, Russia carried out drone attacks on Ukraine, including strikes on Zaporizhzhia and Odessa. The Zaporizhzhia Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported on Telegram,“Throughout the night and morning of June 22, 2026, the Russians struck civilian infrastructure in Zaporizhzhia using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). As a result of the enemy shelling, two women, aged 39 and 53, were killed. Another seven people were injured, including an 11-year-old boy.” The attack targeted civilian infrastructure in the southeastern Ukrainian city, with emergency services responding to the scene as authorities assessed the full extent of the damage. Ukrainian officials said the strike formed part of a broader wave of overnight Russian attacks reported across several regions of the country. The latest drone assault comes only days after Ukraine carried out a renewed strike on Moscow's only oil refinery, one of the region's most important fuel-production facilities. The refinery, operated by Gazprom Neft in Moscow's Kapotnya district, was struck for a second time within a week during a major Ukrainian drone offensive on June 18. Industry sources told Reuters that the attack damaged a key processing unit and temporarily halted refinery operations. The Moscow refinery is the capital region's largest fuel supplier and produced 11.6 million metric tons of oil products in 2024, including gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel. The facility has become a recurring target as Ukraine intensifies long-range strikes against Russian energy infrastructure. The June 22 attack reflects an escalating drone campaign by Ukraine aimed at military, energy and logistics infrastructure deep inside Russian territory. Ukrainian officials have previously described such operations as a response to Russia's continuing attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. The attack occurred amid heightened security concerns around Moscow following one of the largest drone assaults on the Russian capital since the war began. During the June 18 offensive, Russia said it shot down hundreds of drones across the country, including around 180 near Moscow. That attack damaged the city's oil refinery, disrupted airport operations and injured at least 16 people in the Moscow region, according to regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov. In response to the growing threat of drone incursions, Rosaviatsia recently announced new restrictions on light aircraft and drone operations in Moscow and several neighboring regions. The measures, which took effect on June 20, establish a minimum operating altitude of 5,200 meters, effectively grounding most private aircraft and drones in affected areas while leaving commercial airline operations unaffected.

The incident began at approximately 6:50 p.m. local time on Friday, June 19, when authorities received reports of a potentially suspicious package at the airport. Police Scotland immediately launched a security response, ordering the evacuation of the terminal building while specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams were deployed to assess the item. A security cordon was established around the airport, and several access roads were closed as bomb disposal experts conducted their investigation. Hundreds of passengers were evacuated from the terminal and directed away from the airport while emergency personnel secured the area. According to Police Scotland, the evacuation was implemented as a precautionary measure following the report of the suspicious package. Several flights reportedly entered holding patterns or altered their routes as the security operation unfolded. Ground transportation services were also disrupted. Coach operator Citylink announced that its airport services were unable to access the terminal because of the ongoing incident. Temporary pickup and drop-off arrangements were established at nearby locations, including the Moxy Hotel and Hilton Hotel bus stops. The airport remained largely shut down for several hours while EOD specialists examined the package. Operations began returning to normal during the early hours of Saturday after authorities completed their assessment and lifted restrictions. The prolonged closure created knock-on effects across airline schedules, with passengers warned to expect delays and operational disruptions as carriers worked to reposition aircraft and recover their networks. As of Saturday morning, airport operations had resumed, although airlines continued to advise travelers to verify the status of their flights before heading to the airport. Police Scotland has not announced any arrests in connection with the incident, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the discovery remain ongoing.

The incident occurred on May 29, aboard a United Airlines service traveling from Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP). During the flight, a passenger allegedly became disruptive and attempted to move toward the flight deck area, triggering an immediate response from cabin crew and flight personnel. Flight attendants and crew members reportedly intervened to prevent access to the cockpit, while the flight crew coordinated with air traffic control and law enforcement authorities. The aircraft subsequently landed safely, where police and security personnel met the flight upon arrival. Reports indicate that the situation prompted the activation of a heightened security response, with references made to a "Level 4" threat classification. Prosecutors allege Brown traveled to China in December 2023 and stayed until early February 2026, where he trained People’s Liberation Army Air Force pilots and briefed them on U.S. Air Force operations and tactics, violating export control laws under ITAR. A former Major with 24 years of service, Brown previously flew and instructed on several fighter jets, including the F-35. The FBI and Air Force Office of Special Investigations are probing the case, which officials describe as a serious national security concern. Gerald Eddie Brown, Jr., 65, a U.S. citizen known by the call sign “Runner,” was arrested in Jeffersonville, Indiana, and was expected to make his initial appearance before a Magistrate Judge in the Southern District of Indiana on 26 February 2026. Brown has been charged under the Arms Export Control Act (AECA) for providing prohibited defence services to foreign military personnel without a required license from the U.S. State Department. According to the DOJ, Brown “provided and conspired to provide defence services to Chinese military pilots without authorisation,” in violation of U.S. law. Prosecutors say the training he offered falls under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), which require U.S. persons to obtain a licence from the State Department’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls before providing any military training or assistance to foreign nationals or foreign military units. Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg emphasised that Brown was trained by the U.S. Air Force to defend the nation, a role his alleged conduct now reverses. “When U.S. persons, whether military or civilian, provide training to a foreign military, that activity is illegal unless they have a licence from the State Department,” Eisenberg said. “The National Security Division will use all tools at its disposal to protect our military advantages and hold to account those who would violate the AECA.” FBI officials also highlighted the national security implications of the case. Roman Rozhavsky, Assistant Director of the FBI’s Counterintelligence and Espionage Division, stated that Brown’s conduct allegedly aided efforts by the Chinese government to “modernize China’s military capabilities” by exploiting the expertise of former U.S. service members. Rozhavsky added that this arrest is intended to serve as a warning to others who might collaborate with U.S. adversaries. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro for the District of Columbia also condemned the alleged conduct, saying Brown “broke his oath” and “jeopardized the safety of our servicemembers and allies” by offering his training services overseas. Brown served over 24 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1996 at the rank of Major. His military career included commanding sensitive units with responsibility for nuclear weapons delivery systems, leading combat missions, and serving as a fighter pilot and simulator instructor on multiple aircraft including the F-4 “Phantom II,” F-15 “Eagle,” F-16 “Fighting Falcon,” A-10 “Thunderbolt II” and the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter. After leaving active duty, Brown worked as a commercial cargo pilot and later as a contract simulator instructor training U.S. military pilots. According to the criminal complaint, Brown began making arrangements in August 2023 to contract with Chinese military personnel for combat aircraft training, using a co-conspirator to negotiate with Chinese national Stephen Su Bin who previously pled guilty in U.S. federal court in 2016 to conspiring to hack into defence contractor networks to steal sensitive data. Su Bin and his company were added to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Entity List in 2014. Brown allegedly travelled to China in December 2023 to begin the training work and remained there until early February 2026. Once in China, prosecutors say he conducted extensive briefings on U.S. Air Force operations, answered questions about U.S. military tactics, and trained People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) pilots. The DOJ’s announcement explicitly links Brown’s case to an earlier prosecution of a former U.S. Marine Corps pilot, Daniel Edmund Duggan, who was charged in 2017 with similar violations. Duggan was arrested in Australia in October 2022 and is awaiting extradition to the U.S. on comparable AECA charges for providing defence services to the Chinese military. In recent years, U.S. and allied security agencies have warned that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army continues to pursue current and former Western military personnel to bolster its capabilities, a trend that has drawn warnings from NATO and U.S. military leadership about safeguard obligations even after service members retire. The case is being investigated by the FBI’s New York Field Office, with assistance from its Louisville, Indianapolis and Los Angeles field offices, as well as the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Prosecution is being handled by attorneys from the DOJ’s National Security Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, with support from the Southern District of Indiana.
