The twin-engine Beechcraft 1900D turboprop, registered HK-4709, was flying as SATENA Flight 8849 from Camilo Daza International Airport in Cúcuta toward Aguas Claras Airport in Ocaña when it lost radio and radar contact with air traffic control at about 11:54 a.m. local time, roughly 12 minutes into the short domestic service. Search and rescue teams later located the wreckage on a cloud-covered mountainside near Curasica in the municipality of Playa de Belén, confirming there were no survivors among the 13 passengers and two crew members. Among those killed were Diógenes Quintero Amaya, a 36-year-old member of Colombia’s House of Representatives representing the Catatumbo region, and Carlos Salcedo, a candidate in the upcoming congressional elections, according to passenger lists released by SATENA. Colombian authorities and local media also reported that members of Quintero’s team were on board. SATENA said flight crews lost contact with the aircraft shortly before its scheduled landing in Ocaña. The plane’s emergency locator transmitter did not activate, which delayed initial detection of the crash site. Once located, national authorities, including the Civil Aeronautics Authority (Aerocivil), the Colombian Aerospace Force, and military personnel, coordinated search and recovery operations in difficult terrain, hampered by dense fog and rugged mountains. Both were pronounced dead at the scene after emergency responders found the plane engulfed in flames in a wooded area shortly after 5 p.m. on Jan. 18. According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were dispatched to the crash site east of the airport runway near Greer Road after receiving reports of a downed aircraft. Upon arrival, crews from multiple fire departments worked to extinguish the burning wreckage in dense terrain before confirming the fatalities. Sheriff Kenny Dickerson described the crash zone as heavily wooded, which made access difficult for first responders, and said initial observations suggested the aircraft struck a large tree before impacting the ground. Bolden, a resident of Marshall County, was known locally as a flight instructor operating out of the Holly Springs-Marshall County Airport. The scramble for personnel comes amid tighter safety rules on flight duty times and a recent operational disruption at the country’s largest airline. The roster crisis first became widely visible earlier in December, when IndiGo operated by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd cancelled thousands of flights due to crew unavailability following the implementation of stricter Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). These rules, aimed at improving pilot rest and reducing fatigue, require longer rest periods and limit the number of night landings, increasing the number of pilots needed for scheduled services. According to TOI, both IndiGo and the Air India group have entered a fierce competition to recruit experienced captains, with some offers reportedly including joining bonuses of up to ₹50 lakh to attract talent from rivals or international carriers. Such incentives rarely seen at this scale in Indian aviation reflect the acute need for senior pilots capable of leading flight operations across domestic and international routes. Earlier IndiGo has informed the DGCA that it plans to add about 100 pilots in January, while Air India has launched new hiring drives. The allowance revisions were communicated in an internal email sent to IndiGo’s pilots by Ashim Mittra, Senior Vice President for Flight Operations, outlining the updated pay and allowance structure. It increases key components of pilot compensation across a range of duty types, including domestic layovers, deadhead travel, night flying, transit stops and tail‑swap operations. Under the revised structure: Domestic layover allowances for stays between 10:01 and 24 hours have been raised by about 50% captains will receive ₹3,000 (up from ₹2,000) and first officers ₹1,500 (up from ₹1,000). Deadhead travel allowances paid when pilots reposition as passengers have increased to ₹4,000 for captains and ₹2,000 for first officers. Night flying compensation has been standardised to a fixed payment of ₹2,000 per hour for captains and ₹1,000 for first officers. Tail‑swap allowance, a new category for duties involving a change of aircraft mid‑duty, has been introduced at ₹1,500 for captains and ₹750 for first officers. Transit allowances for extended ground halts beyond 90 minutes have also been adjusted upwards. The revisions come after a turbulent December, during which IndiGo cancelled thousands of flights, leaving hundreds of thousands of passengers stranded amid challenges in crew rostering under stricter Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms. According to industry reports, the airline’s failure to sufficiently staff pilots in anticipation of the new regulations led to widespread operational disruptions. In response, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ordered a reduction in IndiGo’s winter schedule and has been engaged in ongoing regulatory oversight. IndiGo, which employs roughly 5,000 pilots and controls around 65% of India’s domestic market, has faced criticism from some pilot groups and aviation analysts for fatigue‑linked rostering pressures and competitive hiring practices by foreign carriers. Seoni, India: A training aircraft belonging to Redbird Flight Training Academy crashed on Monday evening after its wing struck a 33 kV high-voltage power line near Sukatra village, in the Kurai police-station area of Seoni district. According to police, the incident occurred around 6:25–6:30 pm, roughly 2 km from the Suktara airstrip, as the aircraft was preparing to land. Eyewitness accounts describe sparks and a loud explosion as the plane’s wing contacted the line, after which the aircraft plunged into a nearby field. Authorities identified those on board as the instructor pilot Ajit Anthony and trainee pilot Ashok Chawda. Both sustained injuries and were taken to a private hospital in Barapathar. Officials say they are “out of danger.” Local police and power-company staff, aided by villagers, rescued the two pilots from the wreckage soon after the crash. A preliminary probe indicates that the aircraft may have suffered a “technical snag,” possibly an engine malfunction, causing it to lose power as it descended. The wing then struck the overhead power line of the Badalpar Substation, triggering the crash. The impact caused the 33 kV line to snap, immediately tripping the electricity supply. Roughly 80–90 villages around the substations reportedly experienced a blackout, and repair crews have been deployed to restore power to the affected areas. The district police have launched an official investigation to ascertain the precise cause of the crash. It remains uncertain whether pilot error, mechanical failure, or a combination of factors led to the collision. Final determination will await the outcome of the inquiry. So far, there have been no fatalities. Residents near the Suktara airstrip, however, expressed deep concern, noting that this was not the first incident involving a training aircraft in the area. Earlier in May 2025, a training aircraft operated by Redbird Aviation Pvt. Ltd. overturned during landing at the Suktara airstrip in Seoni district, Madhya Pradesh. The flight was being conducted solo by a trainee pilot. Initial reports attribute the incident to a faulty landing. Fortunately, the trainee escaped without injury and there was no fire. Months later on August 9, 2025 again a trainer aircraft of Redbird Flight Training Centre crash-landed near Baramati Airport in Pune district. During a routine training sortie at around 8 a.m., the trainee pilot realised one of the aircraft’s tyres was damaged. Upon touchdown, the front wheel detached and the aircraft veered off the taxiway, crossing to the far side of the airfield. Despite the abrupt landing and loss of the wheel, the pilot escaped unhurt.

Gulfport, United States: A small instructional aircraft from Apollo Flight Training and Aircraft Management plunged into Lake Pontchartrain Monday night after losing contact with air traffic controllers, authorities and the flight-school owner said. Two people on board a flight instructor and a student working toward their commercial license are presumed dead. The aircraft, a single-engine Cessna, departed from Million Air in Gulfport around 5:45 p.m. Monday, bound for a training approach to New Orleans Lakefront Airport. Radio contact was lost around 6:23–6:40 p.m., roughly four miles offshore over the lake. Search efforts by the United States Coast Guard (USCG), along with local agencies including wildlife and fisheries and parish sheriff’s offices, began shortly after the plane disappeared from radar. A MH-60 helicopter and a 29-foot Coast Guard boat were deployed from the New Orleans station. During the overnight search, crews recovered debris believed to belong to the aircraft including what appeared to be a seat cushion, and later what may have been part of the landing gear. Divers also reported a sonar hit in the search area, and teams observed water discoloration consistent with a crash. The owner of Apollo Flight Training, Michael Carastro, described the crash as “an unimaginable tragedy.” He confirmed the debris matched distinctive characteristics of their Cessna, and said based on maintenance and inspection records, mechanical failure appears unlikely. He also stated no distress call was received prior to the crash. Carastro noted the instructor aboard was “highly qualified,” with between 1,200 and 1,300 flight hours, and the student was working toward a commercial/instrument rating. He added that flying over water, particularly at night, carries additional risks: “you don’t have clear horizons, you get vertigo,” making spatial disorientation a possibility. But Carastro refrained from speculating on the cause until investigators completed their work. At present, the wreckage has not been recovered. The USCG, local agencies, and volunteer organizations continue search operations. Investigations by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been initiated; authorities emphasize it is premature to draw conclusions about the cause of the crash.
