Belgrade, Serbia: Low-cost carrier Wizz Air has launched an unprecedented public attack on Serbian authorities, alleging that newly adopted aviation regulations are designed to force the airline to shut down its Belgrade base from November 2026, a move it says would violate European aviation agreements, reduce competition, and threaten jobs. In a strongly worded statement released on June 3, Wizz Air claimed that Serbian authorities are attempting to introduce measures that would effectively prevent foreign airlines from maintaining base operations in the country unless they are Serbian operators. The airline argues that the changes amount to a protectionist policy intended to shield state-backed national carrier Air Serbia from competition. According to Wizz Air, the proposed measures would make it impossible for the airline to continue operating its Belgrade base under its current business model despite having maintained a presence in Serbia for more than 15 years. The airline said it has invested hundreds of millions of euros in Serbia since launching operations in 2010 and has carried more than 14 million passengers to and from the country. Wizz Air currently operates 29 routes linking Belgrade with 26 destinations across 10 countries and maintains one of the largest low-cost carrier networks in the Serbian market. Wizz Air warned that the closure of its Belgrade base would result in the loss of more than 150 direct jobs while also impacting thousands of positions indirectly supported through tourism, hospitality, airport services, and related sectors. The carrier further argued that Serbian travelers would face fewer direct flight options, reduced connectivity, diminished consumer choice, and potentially higher airfares if the measures are implemented. "The measures they plan to use against Wizz Air are illegal," the airline's Chief Corporate Officer, Owain Jones, said in comments accompanying the statement. He accused Serbian authorities of engaging in discriminatory practices and called for the preservation of fair and transparent market conditions for all airlines operating in the country. Central to Wizz Air's argument is the European Common Aviation Area (ECAA) Agreement, often referred to as the "Open Skies" framework, which provides participating countries and airlines with market access rights and seeks to ensure fair competition across European aviation markets. The airline contends that the Serbian government's actions represent a direct breach of the country's obligations under the ECAA Agreement and undermine principles designed to foster competition and connectivity within Europe. Wizz Air has urged Serbian authorities to withdraw the measures and has called on European institutions to intervene. The carrier said it expects Serbia, as an EU candidate country and signatory to international aviation agreements, to uphold its commitments and ensure equal treatment for all operators. The dispute comes at a time of intensifying competition between Wizz Air and Air Serbia at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. Over the past year, both airlines have expanded their networks and increasingly launched competing services on several routes from the Serbian capital. Serbian authorities, however, have rejected Wizz Air's allegations. The Civil Aviation Directorate of the Republic of Serbia has stated that the newly adopted rulebook does not revoke any airline's traffic rights and applies equally to all carriers operating in the country. Officials maintain that the changes are regulatory in nature and do not prevent foreign airlines from serving Serbia or opening new routes in accordance with existing international agreements. Despite those assurances, questions remain over whether foreign carriers will be able to continue maintaining aircraft bases in Serbia under the revised framework. For now, Wizz Air says it remains committed to its Serbian operations and passengers but warns that unless the measures are reversed, its Belgrade base could face closure later this year, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape at one of the Balkans' fastest-growing aviation hubs.

New Delhi, India: India’s largest airline IndiGo has announced a significant revision of pilot allowances, effective January 1, 2026, in an effort to address morale issues, strengthen retention and ensure smoother flight operations following widespread cancellations earlier this month. The allowance revisions were communicated in an internal email sent to IndiGo’s pilots by Ashim Mittra, Senior Vice President for Flight Operations, outlining the updated pay and allowance structure. It increases key components of pilot compensation across a range of duty types, including domestic layovers, deadhead travel, night flying, transit stops and tail‑swap operations. Under the revised structure: Domestic layover allowances for stays between 10:01 and 24 hours have been raised by about 50% captains will receive ₹3,000 (up from ₹2,000) and first officers ₹1,500 (up from ₹1,000). Deadhead travel allowances paid when pilots reposition as passengers have increased to ₹4,000 for captains and ₹2,000 for first officers. Night flying compensation has been standardised to a fixed payment of ₹2,000 per hour for captains and ₹1,000 for first officers. Tail‑swap allowance, a new category for duties involving a change of aircraft mid‑duty, has been introduced at ₹1,500 for captains and ₹750 for first officers. Transit allowances for extended ground halts beyond 90 minutes have also been adjusted upwards. The revisions come after a turbulent December, during which IndiGo cancelled thousands of flights, leaving hundreds of thousands of passengers stranded amid challenges in crew rostering under stricter Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms. According to industry reports, the airline’s failure to sufficiently staff pilots in anticipation of the new regulations led to widespread operational disruptions. In response, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ordered a reduction in IndiGo’s winter schedule and has been engaged in ongoing regulatory oversight. IndiGo, which employs roughly 5,000 pilots and controls around 65% of India’s domestic market, has faced criticism from some pilot groups and aviation analysts for fatigue‑linked rostering pressures and competitive hiring practices by foreign carriers. While the airline has not publicly commented on the revisions, industry experts say the allowance uplift represents a strategic move to stabilise operations ahead of the peak travel season and improve pilot retention amid intensified competition. Malé, Maldives: A Boeing 737 MAX 8 belonging to flydubai was damaged on 4 December 2025 after a ground‑services fuel truck struck the aircraft while it was parked at Velana International Airport (MLE), the airline confirmed. The aircraft registration A6‑FMM, operating flight FZ1025 from Dubai (DXB) had just arrived in Malé when the collision occurred on the apron during routine ground handling at approximately 08:50 local time. Reports indicate that the lower left‑hand winglet sustained damage. flydubai swiftly confirmed that all passengers and crew disembarked safely, with no injuries, fuel spillage or fire risk reported. The airline said affected travellers have been re‑accommodated on the next available flights while the damaged aircraft undergoes inspection and repair. The next scheduled leg, a flight from Malé to Colombo, was cancelled as a result of the incident. Authorities at the Maldives airport are expected to launch a formal investigation into the incident, focusing on apron safety protocols, ground‑handling procedures and vehicle movement controls around parked aircraft. flydubai reiterated that the “safety of our passengers and crew remains our highest priority at all times.” The aircraft will remain grounded until repairs are completed and regulatory standards for airworthiness are satisfied. On 28 November 2025 a Emirates Airbus A380‑842 at Manchester Airport (UK) was struck by a fuel‑truck while parked at a gate, during routine turnaround after arrival from Dubai. The collision damaged the cowling of the engine intake though there was no fuel leak, fire or injuries and forced cancellation of the return flight EK18 to Dubai. The aircraft remained grounded for inspections and repairs, and took off again on 30 November for flight EK20 to Dubai, signalling the damage was deemed repairable.
