Melawi, Indonesia: All eight people on board a helicopter were killed after the aircraft crashed in a remote, forested area of Indonesia’s West Kalimantan province, authorities confirmed on Friday, following an overnight search operation that located the wreckage in difficult terrain. The aircraft, identified as an Airbus H130 helicopter operated by Matthew Air Nusantara, lost contact shortly after takeoff on Thursday morning while flying within Melawi district in Borneo island. According to Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the helicopter disappeared from radar approximately five minutes after departure from a plantation helipad and was later found crashed about 3 kilometres from its last known contact point, in a densely forested and hilly area. “The location of the crash or loss of contact is in a densely forested area with steep hilly terrain,” said Mohammad Syafii, head of Basarnas, as quoted by Reuters. Officials confirmed that the aircraft carried six passengers and two crew members, all of whom died in the crash. The 2 crew members were identified as Pilot in Command, Captain Marindra W, and Engineer on Board, Harun Arasyid along with 6 passengers Patrick K, Victor T, Charles L, Joko C, Fauzie O, and Sugito. Rescue teams recovered wreckage, including parts believed to be the tail section of the helicopter, during the search operation involving military and police units. The plantation area from which the helicopter departed is reportedly owned by the palm oil company Citra Mahkota, according to rescue officials cited in international reports. Search and recovery efforts were significantly slowed due to dense jungle terrain and steep hills, forcing rescue teams to rely on combined aerial reconnaissance and ground movement through difficult forest access routes. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash. Investigators are currently examining all possible factors, including mechanical failure and weather conditions, though no official conclusion has been released. “The cause of the crash remains unclear,” Basarnas officials said, confirming that a full investigation is underway.

Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed that the decision followed consultations with domestic carriers, emphasizing that the policy seeks to balance rising operational costs with consumer purchasing power. “This decision was not taken unilaterally, but through coordination and input, particularly from the airlines,” he said during a press conference in Jakarta. The revised surcharge replaces the previous limits set under a 2023 regulation, which capped surcharges at 10% for jet aircraft and 25% for propeller aircraft. The new policy standardizes the cap at 38% across all aircraft types. The move comes amid escalating global energy prices driven by geopolitical tensions, which have significantly increased aviation fuel costs. Indonesia’s Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia noted that domestic jet fuel pricing follows international market mechanisms, with state energy firm Pertamina adjusting rates in line with global trends. Recent data highlights the scale of cost pressures facing airlines. According to the Indonesian National Air Carriers Association (INACA), jet fuel prices at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport rose sharply to Rp 23,551.08 per liter in April, up from Rp 13,656.51 per liter in March, marking a 72.45% increase in just one month. Compared to 2019 averages, prices have surged by nearly 295%. For international operations, fuel prices have also climbed steeply, rising by over 80% to approximately $1.34 per liter, further straining airline operating costs. The single-engine turboprop, registered PK-SNS, had departed from Douw Aturure Airport (NBX) bound for Kaimana Airport (KNG) shortly after noon local time. Shortly after takeoff, the flight crew detected a technical issue with the aircraft’s engine, prompting the captain to attempt a return to the departure airport. With engine thrust diminishing, the pilot executed an emergency landing at the Logpond Kaladiri area, a shallow coastal waterway adjacent to the airport. The aircraft came down at approximately 13:40 WIT (Western Indonesian Time), skidding into the water near Karadiri Beach before finally coming to rest. Jakarta, Indonesia: Search and rescue teams in Indonesia have located the wreckage of a missing Indonesia Air Transport ATR 42-500 aircraft on the slopes of Mount Bulusaraung in South Sulawesi province, officials confirmed Sunday, as efforts intensify to find the remaining passengers and crew. The turboprop aircraft, chartered by Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries for an aerial surveillance mission, lost contact with air traffic control at about 1:17 p.m. local time on January 17 while en route from Yogyakarta to Makassar, authorities said. Rescuers detecting debris from the aircraft on Sunday morning narrowed the search zone to a steep, forested area inside Bantimurung-Bulusaraung National Park. Ground teams located scattered wreckage including what are believed to be parts of the fuselage, tail section and windows around the peak of the mountain at approximately 8:02 a.m. local time. Later in the afternoon, a male victim’s body was recovered from a ravine around 200 meters deep, surrounded by aircraft debris, Makassar’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) announced. The victim is being evacuated via a challenging climbing route amid fog and rain. The initial report said there were 11 people on board, including eight crew members and three ministry officials. However, later revisions by Indonesian authorities indicated 10 individuals were aboard comprising seven crew and three passengers. The identities of those aboard, including crew and ministry personnel, have not yet been publicly released. Among the passengers were government officials conducting fisheries surveillance, a ministry statement confirmed. Rescue operations involve hundreds of personnel from Basarnas, the Indonesian military, police, marine units, volunteers and other agencies. Teams are navigating extremely rugged karst terrain, thick fog and heavy winds that continue to slow progress. Basarnas officials have established a one-kilometer search radius around the crash site and divided the area into multiple search zones to improve coordination. According to aviation data provider OAG, total seat capacity in the region now stands 0.5% higher than in 2019, driven primarily by robust domestic markets in countries such as India, China, and Indonesia. Independent aviation analyst Brendan Sobie described the rebound as “delayed but now very strong,” emphasizing that Asia-Pacific’s recovery trailed behind other global markets due to prolonged travel restrictions and uneven reopening policies. However, once borders reopened, pent-up demand for air travel surged, supported by economic resilience and a growing middle-class population. “The younger population and the expanding middle class are fundamental drivers of aviation growth in this region,” Sobie said. “These demographic factors are creating long-term, sustainable demand for air travel.” Domestic travel has been the engine behind the region’s growth. Data from OAG shows that China’s domestic capacity is 14% higher than 2019 levels, while India’s domestic seat capacity is up by 13%, reflecting the strength of internal connectivity and economic activity. Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and China Eastern are leading the growth in international seat capacity. Singapore Airlines is one of three Asia-Pacific carriers that have exceeded their 2019 international capacity, operating 14.1% more seats than in 2024. The other two are Scoot (+13.8%) and EVA Airways (+4.5%). The ticket prices across the region have dropped because of rapid capacity growth and tougher competition. Fares on 17 of the 20 fastest-growing routes have fallen by over 20%, with Bangkok–Shanghai (BKK–PVG) seeing the steepest decline of 71% year-on-year. Even as international capacity continues to recover more gradually, the rapid expansion of domestic networks has allowed airlines to stabilize operations and rebuild financial strength. The recovery is also being shaped by rapid technological transformation across airlines and airports. In Singapore, Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, has embraced digital solutions to improve operational efficiency. The airline’s virtual Operations Command Center (OCC), developed in partnership with OutSystems, enables real-time monitoring of flight operations and proactive disruption management. According to Leonard Tan, Regional Vice President at OutSystems, the system has improved data visibility by 90% and reduced manual processing by 60%, allowing Scoot to respond faster to operational challenges. “By digitizing core operational workflows, airlines can make better decisions, reduce costs, and enhance passenger experience,” Tan explained. The Asia-Pacific region’s aviation growth is now outpacing global averages, reflecting both market resilience and structural shifts toward efficiency. As emerging economies expand and infrastructure improves, analysts expect further growth in capacity and connectivity across the region.
