New Delhi, India: An Air India Airbus A320 operating flight AI2379 from Phuket, Thailand, to New Delhi encountered severe turbulence on Tuesday, August 4, leaving several passengers and cabin crew with minor injuries before the aircraft landed safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL). The incident occurred during the flight's final phase, although reports differ on the exact timing. While early media reports said the turbulence struck during the aircraft's descent into Delhi, Air India later clarified that the aircraft encountered turbulence while in cruise, resulting in a brief change in altitude. The Airbus A320, carrying 134 passengers, landed safely shortly after 11:00 a.m. IST. All passengers and crew disembarked normally after arrival, with Air India's airport and medical teams meeting the aircraft at the gate. According to PTI, 12 people, including passengers and cabin crew, sustained minor injuries during the turbulence event. Other reports indicated that around 10 passengers and two cabin crew members were taken to the Medanta medical facility at Delhi Airport for precautionary medical assessment. Seven passengers were later moved to Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj for further evaluation, scans, and observation. Air India said there were no serious injuries. Some early reports stated the aircraft experienced a sudden altitude drop of approximately 300 feet during the turbulence, causing unrestrained occupants to be thrown against the cabin interior and resulting in minor injuries. Air India, however, described the event as a "momentary change in altitude" without confirming the reported altitude deviation. Speaking to news agency ANI, a passenger on board the flight claimed the aircraft experienced a sudden jolt about an hour and a half into the journey while most passengers were asleep. According to the passenger, the aircraft abruptly dropped and swayed violently for nearly two to three minutes, leaving several people injured. In an official statement, Air India said, "The safety and well-being of our passengers and crew remain Air India's highest priority." The airline added that a small number of passengers and crew members requiring medical assessment were taken to the airport medical facility as a precaution and confirmed that it is providing all necessary assistance while cooperating with the relevant authorities reviewing the incident.

New Delhi, India: An IndiGo flight operating from Visakhapatnam to Delhi made a safe emergency landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday morning after suffering a mid-air engine failure. The flight, identified as 6E579, was carrying 160 passengers onboard, sources told PTI though a detailed passenger-crew breakup has not been officially disclosed by the airline. The aircraft encountered a failure in one of its engines during the flight, prompting the pilots to initiate emergency procedures and seek priority landing clearance in Delhi. Despite the technical issue, the crew continued operations using the aircraft’s remaining engine, in line with standard safety protocols for twin-engine jets. Airport authorities declared a full emergency at 10:39 AM, activating all necessary response mechanisms. The aircraft subsequently landed safely at approximately 10:54 AM on Runway 28, with fire tenders and rescue teams positioned on standby as a precaution. The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737, approximately 15 years old, operating under a wet-lease arrangement from Corendon Airlines. Under such agreements, the leasing airline typically provides the aircraft along with crew and maintenance support. All passengers and crew onboard the flight were reported safe, with no injuries or damage recorded. Following the landing, emergency status at the airport was withdrawn, and operations continued without significant disruption. The airport operator of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) confirmed that standard emergency protocols were followed to ensure a safe and controlled landing environment.

Delhi, India: An Air India Airbus A350-900 aircraft operating flight AI101 from Delhi to New York (JFK) suffered significant engine damage early on 15 January 2026 after it ingested a cargo container while taxiing at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) amid dense fog, aviation authorities confirmed. The wide-body aircraft, registered VT-JRB, had taken off from Delhi in the pre-dawn hours but was forced to return shortly after departure due to the temporary closure of Iranian airspace, which disrupted its planned trans-Atlantic routing. Upon landing safely on Runway 28 at approximately 05:25 IST, the jet was taxiing toward its designated parking bay when the incident occurred. According to initial findings by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), a cargo container toppled onto the taxiway intersection of N/N4 after a wheel came loose from a ground-handling tug operated by Bird Worldwide Flight Services (BWFS). The fallen container lay in the aircraft’s path during low-visibility conditions, and the engine sucked the container into its number two (right-hand) engine, resulting in substantial damage to the powerplant. Officials noted that foggy conditions and marginal visibility likely exacerbated the risk, contributing to the ground-handling equipment mishap. Metal debris was cleared from the taxiway before the aircraft was towed to Stand 244 for assessment, the regulator said. Air India confirmed the damage and said the aircraft is grounded for detailed inspection and repairs. In a statement, the carrier said it has positioned the affected jet safely and is assisting passengers with alternative travel arrangements and refunds where required. The airline also warned that the grounding may lead to disruptions on select long-haul routes serviced by its A350 fleet, which includes services to destinations such as London, Newark, and New York. No injuries were reported among the more than 250 passengers and crew aboard the flight, reflecting effective safety protocols despite the rare nature of the incident. The DGCA has initiated a formal investigation into the chain of events that led to the foreign object debris (FOD) incident, focusing on ground-handling procedures, compliance with safety norms, and operations in reduced visibility. Foreign object ingestion events are classified as serious safety occurrences in aviation due to the potential for engine failure.

New Delhi, India: An Air India flight operating from Delhi to Ahmedabad made a precautionary return to the national capital shortly after take-off on Thursday after a smoke indication alert was triggered in the aircraft’s cargo hold. All passengers and crew were safely deboarded, and the alert was later confirmed to be false. The incident involved Flight AI2939, which departed from Indira Gandhi International Airport for Ahmedabad with around 170 people onboard. Moments after take-off, the cockpit crew received a smoke warning from the cargo compartment and immediately followed emergency safety procedures, aborting the climb and turning back to Delhi. The aircraft landed safely without any injuries or technical damage. Air India engineers conducted a detailed inspection after landing and found no trace of smoke or fire, confirming that the alert was a technical false indication. In an official statement, Air India said the flight crew acted strictly as per standard operating procedures and prioritised passenger safety. The airline arranged an alternate aircraft to ferry the affected passengers to Ahmedabad, resulting in a delay of approximately four hours. “Passenger safety is always our top priority. Our ground team ensured immediate assistance and alternative travel arrangements for all passengers,” an Air India spokesperson said, apologising for the inconvenience. A day before the Delhi-Ahmedabad Air India incident, an Air India Express flight from Guwahati to Hyderabad, IX 2884, was cancelled after being delayed for over four hours due to what the airline termed “unforeseen operational reasons.

New Delhi, India: More than 800 flights were delayed at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) after a technical failure disrupted air traffic control systems on Friday, causing widespread operational chaos at one of the world’s busiest airports. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) confirmed that a malfunction occurred in the airport’s Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS) , a critical platform that generates and distributes flight plans to controllers and pilots. The failure forced the ATC to manually process flight plans, drastically slowing departures through Friday. “The system developed a technical issue late Thursday evening, leading to temporary delays in flight departures,” the AAI said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). “Technical teams are working to restore the system at the earliest.” According to flight-tracking platform Flightradar24, over 800 flights experienced delays, with more than 175 departures affected on Friday morning alone. The average delay was around 55 minutes, but several international routes were held back much longer. Domestic carriers, including IndiGo, SpiceJet and Air India, reported schedule disruptions. IndiGo’s shares dropped 1.5 % in response. An ITA Airways flight to Rome was delayed by nearly two hours, while a Virgin Atlantic service to London took off more than an hour behind schedule. While the AAI has not confirmed the root cause, officials said preliminary checks are underway to determine whether the issue was linked to a possible malware intrusion. A senior aviation ministry source told Reuters that “cybersecurity experts are reviewing the system logs for any signs of tampering or external interference.” Delhi’s IGIA, managed by GMR Airports Limited and overseen by the AAI, handled 78 million passengers in 2024, ranking as the ninth-busiest airport globally according to Airports Council International. AAI technicians and software vendors were still working late Friday to fully restore the AMSS. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been briefed and is monitoring the situation for compliance and safety implications. No cancellations were officially reported, but passengers experienced long queues, rescheduling, and confusion as airlines adjusted flight plans.

New Delhi, India: Over 200 passengers on board Air India’s Singapore-bound flight from Delhi faced a gruelling night after a cabin cooling failure delayed their departure by nearly six hours, forcing them to deplane and wait in the terminal before a replacement aircraft was arranged. The incident occurred on Flight AI2380, operated with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which was scheduled to depart Indira Gandhi International Airport at around 11:00 PM on Wednesday night. Shortly after boarding, the aircraft reportedly experienced faults with its air conditioning system and electrical power supply, resulting in rising cabin temperatures. According to passengers, the situation quickly became uncomfortable as the cabin’s temperature climbed. Several travellers shared videos on social media showing people fanning themselves with newspapers and magazines. Some posts described young children and elderly passengers struggling with the heat during the extended wait. Passengers remained inside the aircraft for close to two hours before crew instructed them to disembark and return to the terminal. The decision was taken after engineers determined the issue could not be resolved on the spot. In a statement, Air India acknowledged the disruption, citing a “cabin cooling issue on ground prior to departure” as the cause. The airline said that its ground teams provided regular updates, refreshments, and meals while travellers waited in the terminal. “We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers. The safety and well-being of everyone on board remain our top priority,” the airline said. With the Dreamliner grounded for repairs, Air India deployed a replacement aircraft. The rescheduled flight finally took off at 5:36 AM IST on Thursday, nearly six hours behind schedule.
