Singapore: Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group reported a sharp 57.4 per cent decline in annual net profit for the financial year ended March 31, 2026, as mounting losses at Air India and the absence of a one-time accounting gain from the Vistara merger weighed heavily on the carrier’s bottom line. The airline group posted a net profit of SGD 1.184 billion for FY2025/26, down from SGD 2.778 billion recorded a year earlier. Despite the steep fall in earnings, SIA’s core airline operations remained strong, with the group posting record revenue and higher operating profit driven by sustained passenger demand and network expansion. According to SIA’s earnings report, the biggest factor behind the profit decline was the absence of the SGD 1.098 billion non-cash accounting gain booked in November 2024 following the completion of the Air India-Vistara merger. The previous year’s results had been significantly boosted by that one-off gain after SIA’s stake in Vistara was converted into a 25.1 per cent shareholding in the enlarged Air India Group. At the same time, SIA swung from reporting profits from associated companies last year to posting a SGD 846 million share of losses in FY26, mainly due to Air India’s worsening financial performance. The airline said this year’s accounts reflected a full year of Air India losses, compared to only four months in the previous financial year after the merger completion. Financial disclosures from Singapore Airlines indicated that Air India Group, comprising Air India and Air India Express, recorded losses of approximately SGD 3.56 billion, equivalent to around USD 2.8 billion or more than ₹26,000 crore during FY2025/26. Some reports estimated the losses could be even higher at nearly ₹28,300 crore depending on accounting adjustments and currency conversion methods. The losses mark Air India’s largest annual financial setback since the Tata Group reacquired the airline in 2022. Air India has not yet officially released its standalone FY26 financial statements. Singapore Airlines attributed Air India’s financial pressure to multiple operational and geopolitical challenges, including elevated jet fuel prices, Middle East airspace restrictions, supply-chain disruptions, aircraft delivery delays, and the continued closure of Pakistani airspace for Indian airlines. These factors forced Air India to reroute several long-haul flights, increasing fuel burn and operating costs. The impact of the Iran conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz also emerged as a major concern for SIA itself. The airline warned that higher jet fuel prices resulting from the conflict are expected to weigh more heavily on earnings in the coming fiscal year because fuel costs are reflected on a lagged basis. Air India recently announced significant reductions to its international operations between June and August 2026, including suspending services on several overseas routes and reducing frequencies to destinations in Europe and North America. Routes affected include Delhi-Chicago, Mumbai-New York, and Delhi-Shanghai, while services to Paris, Milan, and Rome are also being reduced. Despite the financial turbulence, Singapore Airlines reiterated its long-term commitment to Air India and described the investment as a “core component” of its multi-hub strategy. The group said its partnership with Tata Sons provides direct access to one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets while complementing SIA’s Singapore hub operations. SIA stated that Air India continues to make progress in its fleet renewal and aircraft retrofit programme, customer experience initiatives, and operational performance improvements despite the difficult environment. While net profit fell sharply, Singapore Airlines’ operational performance remained resilient. Group revenue rose five per cent year-on-year to a record SGD 20.55 billion, supported by strong passenger demand, higher yields, and robust travel flows across Asia and Europe. Operating profit climbed 39 per cent to approximately SGD 2.52 billion, and the airline carried a record 42.4 million passengers during the year. The airline also maintained expansion plans despite industry pressures. Reuters reported that SIA intends to continue adding capacity and launching new services, including flights connecting Singapore and Madrid via Barcelona, while increasing frequencies to Manchester, Milan, Munich, and London Gatwick.

Washington, United States: The sharp surge in global jet fuel prices triggered by the Iran conflict and Strait of Hormuz disruptions has pushed airlines worldwide into one of their biggest operational and financial crises since the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing carriers to raise fares, cut capacity, revise earnings forecasts and seek government support as fuel supply chains tighten across Asia, Europe and North America. U.S. airlines alone spent more than US$5 billion on jet fuel in March 2026, marking a 56% increase, or roughly US$1.8 billion higher than February levels, according to data released by the U.S. Transportation Department. Average jet fuel prices climbed to US$3.13 per gallon during the month while overall fuel consumption also rose nearly 20%, significantly worsening airline operating costs. The crisis has been largely linked to escalating geopolitical tensions involving Iran, disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and tightening global refined fuel supplies. The strategic waterway normally carries about 20% of global crude and refined petroleum flows, making it one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints. Since the conflict intensified, tanker movements and crude shipments have been severely disrupted, creating major shortages in aviation fuel markets worldwide. The airlines globally have begun implementing emergency measures to contain mounting fuel expenses. Several carriers have increased ticket prices, reduced flight frequencies and delayed expansion plans as jet fuel costs surged to levels not seen in years. United Airlines warned that fares may need to rise by as much as 15% to 20% to offset fuel-related pressures. European and Asia-Pacific airlines have also been severely affected. Lufthansa projected a €1.7 billion increase in fuel costs, while Qantas stated it was closely monitoring the fuel spike despite maintaining hedging protections. Scandinavian carrier SAS canceled nearly 1,000 flights in response to soaring operational expenses. The impact has extended beyond airline balance sheets into broader aviation markets. Frontier Airlines said it expected to absorb demand from customers displaced after the collapse of Spirit Airlines, whose shutdown was partly attributed to surging fuel costs and failed bailout efforts. U.S. airlines had sought approximately US$2.5 billion in government relief amid the worsening fuel crisis, although Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the industry still had access to liquidity and did not currently require a full-scale federal bailout. Supply-side disruptions have intensified concerns over prolonged instability in jet fuel markets. Reuters columnist Clyde Russell reported that Asia’s refined fuel exports plunged sharply following the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Jet fuel exports from the region fell to about 596,000 barrels per day in April from 1.54 million barrels previously, marking the lowest level since at least 2017. Major declines were recorded from India, China and the United Arab Emirates. Singapore jet fuel prices surged roughly 70% to nearly US$159 per barrel as inventories tightened across the region. Diesel and gasoline exports also dropped to multi-year lows, reflecting widespread refinery disruptions caused by declining crude availability and shipping bottlenecks. Asian refiners have reportedly struggled to secure sufficient crude supplies as imports fell to a 10-year low. The airline and tourism sectors have simultaneously faced operational challenges from rerouting aircraft away from conflict zones in the Middle East. Many airlines suspended or diverted flights across the region while insurance and operating costs climbed sharply. Airline shares in Europe and Asia also fell amid investor concerns over weakening profitability and slowing travel demand.

El Alto, Bolivia: Bolivian authorities have arrested the pilot and co-pilot of a Bolivian Air Force Lockheed C-130H Hercules following an official investigation that concluded the February 2026 crash near La Paz was preventable and largely linked to operational errors during landing. The aircraft crashed on February 27, 2026, while attempting to land at El Alto International Airport, after completing a domestic flight from Santa Cruz. During landing in adverse weather, the aircraft failed to decelerate on the runway, veered off the surface, breached the airport perimeter, and ploughed into a busy roadway, striking multiple vehicles before breaking apart in a densely populated area. The crash resulted in 24 fatalities and at least 43 injuries, with the majority of victims on the ground. Among the dead were civilians, including passengers in public transport vehicles hit by the aircraft. Several crew members were also injured, making it one of Bolivia’s deadliest aviation disasters in recent decades. Initial reports had indicated a lower death toll, but the number rose significantly as rescue teams recovered victims from the wreckage and surrounding impact zone. The situation on the ground quickly descended into chaos after it emerged that the aircraft was transporting a large consignment of newly printed banknotes for the Central Bank of Bolivia. The impact scattered currency across the crash site, drawing crowds of civilians who rushed to collect the money. Authorities deployed police and military units, including the use of tear gas, to secure the area and allow emergency responders to operate. Officials later declared the banknotes invalid, as they had not yet entered circulation, and subsequently destroyed recovered cash. A formal investigation by the Bolivian Air Force, the findings of which were released on April 30, 2026, identified a chain of operational failures rather than a single-point cause. Investigators determined that adverse weather conditions, including a wet runway and reduced braking efficiency, were contributing factors but not the primary cause. Instead, the report placed significant emphasis on pilot handling during the landing phase. According to the findings, the aircraft executed an improper landing sequence, touching down with the nose gear before the main landing gear, a critical procedural error that compromised braking effectiveness and aircraft stability. This technique reduced aerodynamic drag and delayed the full deployment of braking systems, significantly increasing stopping distance on an already wet runway. The report further highlighted inadequate coordination and communication with air traffic control, which may have affected situational awareness during the final approach and landing rollout. Investigators also pointed to failure to execute a go-around despite unstable landing conditions, a decision that could have prevented the accident altogether. Additionally, the probe noted that standard landing protocols and safety margins were not maintained, particularly given the weather conditions. The combination of these factors resulted in a runway excursion at high speed, leaving the crew unable to regain control before the aircraft exited the airfield boundary. Crucially, investigators concluded that the crash was preventable, stating that proper adherence to established landing procedures and timely decision-making would likely have avoided the accident. Based on these findings, Bolivian prosecutors issued arrest warrants for the pilot and co-pilot on April 30, with both taken into custody on May 1, 2026, following questioning. The two are currently being held in pre-trial detention and face charges of involuntary manslaughter, with authorities alleging that negligent handling of the aircraft and failure to follow standard operating procedures directly contributed to the loss of life.
