According to air traffic control audio reviewed by investigators, the pilot reported a developing issue shortly before the crash. In the transmission, the pilot indicated that the helicopter was experiencing a problem and that an emergency landing in a nearby field was being attempted. "We're going to land here, in one of these fields; we have a problem with the helicopter," a person on board said in the 43-second radio call obtained this Tuesday. Apparently, someone who was listening didn't hear what was said, and another person can be heard explaining the situation. "He said he's going to land in one of the fields; there's a problem with the engine," the other person says. The communication lasted less than a minute before contact was lost. The helicopter subsequently crashed into the roof of a warehouse near South Congress Avenue at approximately 12:30 p.m., as confirmed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Aerial footage from the scene showed parts of the helicopter lodged in the building’s structure, showcasing the force of the impact. Witnesses reported seeing fluid leaking from the wreckage, though no post-crash explosion occurred. Emergency responders quickly secured the area, and access to nearby facilities remained restricted as authorities began their investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has taken the lead in determining the cause of the crash, with assistance from the FAA. Early indications point toward a possible engine malfunction, though officials have not yet confirmed a definitive cause. The aircraft involved was identified as a Robinson R44 helicopter, a commonly used model for training flights. FAA records showed that the helicopter belongs to Palm Beach Helicopters, a flight school in Lantana. The plane identified as a multi-engine Beechcraft 55 came down near mile marker 201 in Cocoa at approximately 5:45 p.m., according to local authorities. The aircraft collided with a 2023 Toyota Camry being driven southbound, causing the car to be crushed against the median and scattering debris across multiple lanes. The Camry’s driver, a 57-year-old woman, was transported to Viera Hospital with what were described as minor injuries. Both the 27-year-old pilot and a 27-year-old passenger aboard the aircraft escaped without injury. Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene. One bystander, who captured dash-cam footage of the crash, said the plane appeared to “drop out of the sky” and impact the rear of the car before sliding to a halt. Others at the scene including two nurses among passing motorists rushed to assist the driver. Authorities including the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched an investigation, with support from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Preliminary findings indicate the aircraft lost power in both engines before the emergency landing. There are no reports of fuel leaks, and traffic on the interstate which had been blocked in both directions for several hours was restored by around 9 p.m. local time. Officials have appealed to anyone with video footage or additional information to contact the NTSB, as investigators continue their probe into what caused the dual-engine failure. This was the second small-aircraft emergency reported in Florida on December 8. Earlier that afternoon, a Cessna 172 made an emergency landing on Jacobs Road in DeLand, about 46 miles north of Orlando. The single-engine plane came down around 2 p.m., according to reports from Fox 13 News. No major injuries were reported in that incident.

Florida, United States: A student pilot and flight instructor were rescued uninjured after their small aircraft crashed in the Florida Everglades during a test flight on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred near Shark Valley, approximately 20 miles west of Miami Executive Airport. According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, the Cessna 172 Skyhawk aircraft took off from Miami Executive Airport at 1:48 PM and circled over the Everglades before encountering issues that led to the crash. Both individuals were uninjured but became stranded in the challenging terrain of the wetlands. They managed to use their cellphones to send their coordinates to emergency responders, enabling rescue teams to locate and extract them safely. Fire rescue units responded to the 12800 block of Southwest 145th Avenue, where the plane had flipped upside down. Both individuals climbed out of the wreckage and stood on the wing while they used their cellphone to send their coordinates to responding officials. They were transported to Miami Executive Airport after being safely removed from the remote area and checked out by paramedics. The student pilot was on a test flight when the aircraft encountered problems that led to the crash.
