Aquidauana, Brazil: A tragic aviation accident occurred on the evening of September 23, 2025, in the Pantanal wetlands of Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. Also killed were Brazilian filmmakers Luiz Fernando Feres da Cunha Ferraz and Rubens Crispim Júnior, and the pilot, Marcelo Pereira de Barros. The aircraft involved was a 1958 Cessna 175, which reportedly lost control and exploded on impact during a landing attempt at Fazenda Barra Mansa. Kongjian Yu was a professor at Peking University and the founder of the landscape architecture firm Turenscape. He was renowned for developing the "sponge city" concept, which integrates natural water management systems into urban environments to mitigate flooding and enhance climate resilience. Yu was in Brazil to film a documentary titled Planeta Esponja (Planet Sponge), focusing on his work in the Pantanal wetlands. Luiz Fernando Feres da Cunha Ferraz was an Emmy-nominated Brazilian documentary filmmaker known for works such as Dossiê Chapecó: O Jogo por Trás da Tragédia and the sports series To Win or To Win for MBC/Shahid. Rubens Crispim Junior was a cinematographer and producer with credits across major networks like Discovery Channel, National Geographic, and TV Globo. Marcelo Pereira de Barros, the pilot and owner of the aircraft, was a seasoned flyer based in Aquidauana. The aircraft was only authorized for daytime visual flights, and the pilot was attempting to abort the landing when the aircraft lost altitude and exploded.
