Dublin, Ireland: The chief executive of Ryanair has warned that a prolonged Iran conflict could push several European airlines into bankruptcy, as surging jet fuel prices and supply uncertainty begin to strain the aviation industry globally. Michael O’Leary said that “two or three European airlines could go bankrupt” by late 2026 if oil prices remain elevated, specifically naming Wizz Air and airBaltic among the most vulnerable carriers. Domestic and international travel continue to expand, reflecting strengthening demand both within Vietnam and from abroad. Passenger volume figures show significant gains across the year: data from the first nine months of 2025 estimate about 64.1 million passengers transported and 1.1 million tonnes of cargo, up 10.7% and 18.7% year-on-year, respectively. The recovery is consistent with earlier data showing a strong first half of the year, when total air passengers reached 41.3 million, recording 10% growth compared with the same period in 2024. Singapore: The Asia-Pacific region has officially surpassed its pre-pandemic aviation capacity, marking a significant milestone in the industry’s recovery from COVID-19. According to aviation data provider OAG, total seat capacity in the region now stands 0.5% higher than in 2019, driven primarily by robust domestic markets in countries such as India, China, and Indonesia. Independent aviation analyst Brendan Sobie described the rebound as “delayed but now very strong,” emphasizing that Asia-Pacific’s recovery trailed behind other global markets due to prolonged travel restrictions and uneven reopening policies. However, once borders reopened, pent-up demand for air travel surged, supported by economic resilience and a growing middle-class population. “The younger population and the expanding middle class are fundamental drivers of aviation growth in this region,” Sobie said. “These demographic factors are creating long-term, sustainable demand for air travel.” Domestic travel has been the engine behind the region’s growth. Data from OAG shows that China’s domestic capacity is 14% higher than 2019 levels, while India’s domestic seat capacity is up by 13%, reflecting the strength of internal connectivity and economic activity. Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and China Eastern are leading the growth in international seat capacity. Singapore Airlines is one of three Asia-Pacific carriers that have exceeded their 2019 international capacity, operating 14.1% more seats than in 2024. The other two are Scoot (+13.8%) and EVA Airways (+4.5%). The ticket prices across the region have dropped because of rapid capacity growth and tougher competition. Fares on 17 of the 20 fastest-growing routes have fallen by over 20%, with Bangkok–Shanghai (BKK–PVG) seeing the steepest decline of 71% year-on-year. Even as international capacity continues to recover more gradually, the rapid expansion of domestic networks has allowed airlines to stabilize operations and rebuild financial strength. The recovery is also being shaped by rapid technological transformation across airlines and airports. In Singapore, Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, has embraced digital solutions to improve operational efficiency. The airline’s virtual Operations Command Center (OCC), developed in partnership with OutSystems, enables real-time monitoring of flight operations and proactive disruption management. According to Leonard Tan, Regional Vice President at OutSystems, the system has improved data visibility by 90% and reduced manual processing by 60%, allowing Scoot to respond faster to operational challenges. “By digitizing core operational workflows, airlines can make better decisions, reduce costs, and enhance passenger experience,” Tan explained. The Asia-Pacific region’s aviation growth is now outpacing global averages, reflecting both market resilience and structural shifts toward efficiency. In recent years, the airline has faced challenges in controlling costs and driving growth amid labor issues. Last year, it issued two profit warnings and the 8% margin target was postponed to 2028–2030. The job reductions will primarily affect back-office, headquarters, and shared service roles in Germany. Flight operations, including pilots and cabin crew, are not expected to be impacted. The decision was unveiled during Lufthansa’s Capital Markets Day, the airline’s first in six years where executives presented new financial targets. The group now aims for an adjusted operating margin of 8 to 10 percent by 2028, annual free cash flow exceeding €2.5 billion, and a 15 to 20 percent return on capital employed before taxes. Alongside workforce cuts, Lufthansa confirmed plans to modernize its fleet with the delivery of more than 230 new aircraft by the end of the decade, including about 100 long-haul planes. Management said the investments, combined with digitalization, will drive efficiency across its airlines: Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, and Eurowings. New Delhi, India: The GST Council on September 3, 2025, announced a revised two-tier GST structure, set to come into effect from September 22, 2025, impacting air travel and luxury services. Under the new system, most goods and services will attract either 5% or 18% GST, while select luxury and “sin” items will be taxed at 40%. For air travel, the changes are as follows: Economy class tickets: Continue at 5% GST, unchanged from previous rates. Premium economy, business, and first-class tickets: Previously taxed at 12% GST, these fares will now attract 18% GST, increasing the cost for premium travelers. For example, a business class ticket booked on September 4, 2025, for travel on September 24, 2025, will attract the old 12% GST, while the same ticket booked on or after September 23, 2025, will incur the new 18% GST. The Finance Ministry clarified under Section 14(a)(i) of the CGST Act, 2017, that GST liability is determined by the time of supply: If goods or services are supplied before the rate change but invoiced afterward, GST depends on the time of supply. Payment after the rate change: time of supply is the earlier of the invoice date or payment receipt date. Payment before the rate change: time of supply is the payment receipt date. The GST on private jets, helicopters, yachts, and pleasure vessels has increased from an effective 31% (28% GST + 3% cess) to a flat 40% GST, eliminating the cess and raising costs for high-end travelers and operators. According to PTI, The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expressed disappointment over the increase in GST on non-economy travel. “Aviation has significant potential to boost India’s economy, both through airline growth and improved connectivity. It is therefore disappointing to increase GST on non-economy travel without clear justification,” said Sheldon Hee, IATA’s Asia Pacific regional vice-president. He added that the tax on premium travel has more than doubled since 2017 and warned that such increases could dampen demand and affect airline profitability, especially since premium travelers often determine a route’s viability. Airlines are expected to pass on the higher GST to passengers, making premium tickets more expensive. Meanwhile, economy travelers benefit from stable fares, with GST unchanged at 5%. The revised structure aims to simplify taxation while ensuring that revenue from luxury and non-essential services contributes to public finances.
