New Delhi, India: India is considering a policy change that could allow airport operators to own and operate airlines, potentially opening the door for major airport companies such as Adani Group and GMR Airports Ltd. to establish their own carriers. The proposal is being discussed within the Ministry of Civil Aviation and could mark a significant shift in India's aviation policy. Under the existing rules, operators of airports in Delhi and Mumbai are barred from holding more than a 10% stake in any airline. Any relaxation or waiver of the ownership restrictions would require legal clearance from the Law Ministry and approval from the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi The potential policy change comes as India's domestic aviation market has become increasingly concentrated around IndiGo and Air India, which together control nearly 90% of domestic capacity. The government is reportedly examining whether allowing airport operators to enter the airline business could bring additional competition and reduce the dominance of the two leading carriers. If the restrictions are eased, the Adani Group, whose airport arm operates Mumbai airport and seven other airports, and GMR Airports, which manages New Delhi airport and four additional airports in India, could potentially establish or acquire airlines. However, the proposal also raises concerns about possible conflicts of interest. Airport operators that also own airlines could potentially give their own carriers preferential access to prime airport slots, creating a new imbalance in the market. The issue of fair and non-discriminatory access to airport infrastructure could therefore become an important consideration if the government proceeds with the policy change. The Ministry of Civil Aviation had not immediately responded to an emailed request for comment at the time of reporting. The discussions come against the backdrop of a major consolidation in India's airline industry over the past decade. The collapse of Jet Airways India Ltd. and Go Airlines India Ltd., along with the merger of Vistara and AirAsia India under the Tata Group, has reduced the number of significant competitors in the market. While Akasa Air, SpiceJet Ltd. and smaller regional airlines continue to operate, IndiGo and Air India have emerged as the dominant players. Concerns about market concentration were further highlighted during IndiGo's operational crisis in December, when the airline, which carries more than 60% of India's domestic passenger traffic, cancelled thousands of flights, mainly because of pilot shortages. The disruption affected air travel across the country and prompted Indian Railways to operate special trains for stranded passengers. Even if airport operators are permitted to launch airlines, aircraft availability could remain a major obstacle for new entrants. A global shortage of commercial aircraft, combined with delivery delays at Airbus SE and Boeing Co., continues to constrain airline expansion plans. Pandemic-era supply-chain disruptions have also contributed to the limited availability of new aircraft. International experience with airport-airline joint ownership offers a mixed picture. In the United States, strict public-ownership rules governing major airports and Federal Aviation Administration revenue-diversion laws effectively prevent local governments from directing airport revenues into airline ventures. In the European Union, joint airport and airline ownership is technically permitted, but strict antitrust enforcement makes such arrangements difficult to operate in practice. The potential policy change comes as India prepares for a major expansion of its aviation infrastructure. The country plans to double its number of airports to 350 by 2047, while the International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecasts an additional 425 million passengers by 2044, which would bring passenger numbers to nearly three times their 2024 levels. The proposal could therefore reshape the competitive landscape of India's aviation sector, but it remains at the discussion stage. Any move to allow airport operators to own airlines would need to address concerns around competition, airport slot allocation and regulatory safeguards before becoming government policy.

The Seattle-based manufacturer said it handed over 160 jets in the fourth quarter alone, with December deliveries accounting for a particularly strong finish. The company’s 2025 delivery tally included 447 Boeing 737 models, 88 787 Dreamliners, 35 777s and 30 767s, a diversified mix that reflects improvement across both narrowbody and widebody segments. Boeing’s 2025 performance represents a substantial year-on-year increase from 348 deliveries in 2024, a year severely constrained by labor disruptions, regulatory scrutiny and ongoing supply chain bottlenecks. The uptick through the calendar year also followed interim monthly gains throughout 2025 as Boeing steadily rebuilt its production cadence. Industry analysts view the 2025 delivery total as a key marker of Boeing’s recovery, even as the company continues to contend with supply constraints and broader market pressures that have affected global aircraft output. On the orders front, Boeing achieved a notable milestone: 1,173 net aircraft orders for 2025, signaling renewed airline confidence in its commercial portfolio and sales execution. This tally places Boeing ahead of Airbus in net orders for the year, the first time the U.S. planemaker has done so since 2018. The surge in booking activity includes major commitments from large global carriers, with dozens of Boeing 737 MAX jets ordered in December as part of one of Alaska Airlines’ largest ever fleet purchases and a significant deal for Boeing 787 Dreamliners from Delta Air Lines. Despite Boeing’s gains, Airbus Boeing’s long-time European rival delivered more aircraft in 2025, with external estimates suggesting approximately 790–800 jets handed over to customers during the year. Airbus had previously adjusted its annual delivery guidance in late 2025 due to quality-related supply delays but subsequently reported figures near or above its revised target. The broader commercial aircraft market in 2025 reflected strong global demand, with both major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) ramping activity toward pre-pandemic production levels. Airbus maintained its leadership in deliveries, but Boeing’s surge in net orders highlights a competitive shift in airline procurement strategies. Manufacturers will now pivot to 2026, where execution on delivery pipelines and fulfillment of multi-year order books will be critical for sustaining momentum.

The initiative, part of BA’s £7-billion transformation programme, promises “lightning-fast, reliable WiFi that feels like home” for every passenger in every cabin, according to the airline’s official announcement. The rollout will extend to both short-haul and long-haul aircraft, enabling gate-to-gate connectivity without usage charges or tier-based plans. The move positions British Airways among the first major global carriers to adopt Starlink’s low-Earth-orbit satellite network at scale. These satellites offer significantly lower latency and stronger performance compared with conventional aviation WiFi systems, aiming to remove the long-standing frustration of slow or unreliable inflight internet. Media reports indicate that parts of the fleet may begin receiving installations as early as late 2025, with full deployment progressing through 2026. However, the airline has not disclosed the exact sequence of aircraft types or routes that will receive the system first. Parent company International Airlines Group (IAG) is also expected to expand Starlink connectivity across its other carriers, including Iberia, Aer Lingus and Vueling, signalling a group-wide shift toward high-performance digital services. BA’s adoption of Starlink comes amid increasing competition in the European market, where carriers are upgrading cabins, lounges and digital platforms to meet evolving customer expectations. Analysts say free, fast internet could become a new industry standard, particularly on short-haul routes where in-flight connectivity has lagged behind long-haul offerings. While British Airways describes the service as completely free for passengers, it has not clarified whether any data caps, device limitations or route-specific restrictions will apply once the network enters full service.
