The unions representing both groups, the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) and the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) voted in favour of revised collective bargaining agreements that will lower key compensation elements and generate approximately $100 million in annual savings, Spirit and union representatives said. Under the terms of the new pilot deal, hourly pay rates will be reduced by about 8 per cent, and employer retirement contributions will be cut in half from 16 per cent to 8 per cent for 2026 and 2027. The agreement also includes scheduled pay restorations, a 4 per cent increase beginning in August 2028 and another 4 per cent in January 2029 contingent on future financial performance. The flight attendants’ agreement preserves base wages and healthcare benefits while reducing incentive overtime pay and eliminating ground holding pay. Changes to overtime thresholds are slated to take effect from mid-2027. Under the revised terms, Spirit will receive $50 million immediately to cover day-to-day expenses, with another $50 million available once it advances plans to either reorganize as a standalone carrier or pursue a sale. Union leaders framed the votes as a strategic choice to keep control of labour terms rather than leave decisions to the bankruptcy court. Ballots were also structured to allow employees to retain their contracts’ core protections and to enable “snapback” of concessions if predefined financial targets are met. Spirit filed for Chapter 11 protection for the second time in a year in August, citing continued losses and cash-flow challenges. The carrier has said it expects to operate at a loss through 2027 and has pursued various cost-cutting measures, including workforce reductions, network cuts and fleet adjustments, to conserve cash. "We continue to provide high-value travel options that benefit American consumers whether they fly with us or not, and look forward to welcoming our guests throughout the holiday season and beyond," CEO Dave Davis said in a statement. The labour agreements still require approval from the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York before they take full effect. The company filed paperwork with the court on Dec. 11 seeking authorisation for the revised contracts. The votes come amid broader operational challenges for Spirit. Earlier restructuring moves included furloughs of flight attendants and pilots, reductions in flight schedules, and the scrapping of further planned pilot furloughs after updated attrition modeling. Spirit has also secured emergency financing to support operations through the holiday travel season and beyond while continuing its restructuring efforts. As the Chapter 11 process continues, analysts say the labour concessions and financial lifelines are crucial to maintaining service and preserving the airline’s viability in a competitive US market characterised by rising costs and stiff competition from larger carriers.

In December 2022, during a severe winter storm, Southwest cancelled nearly 17,000 flights, leaving over 2 million passengers stranded across the United States. The airline’s crew-rescheduling and operations control systems collapsed under pressure. In December 2023, after a formal investigation, DOT imposed a record-breaking US$ 140 million civil penalty on the airline, the largest fine ever issued by the agency to a U.S. carrier for consumer-protection violations. The settlement included US$ 35 million payable to the U.S. Treasury, with the balance to be covered through credits and compensation to affected customers. Southwest had already made two payments of US$ 12 million each in early 2024 and early 2025. The remaining US$ 11 million was scheduled for payment by January 31, 2026. In its updated consent order, DOT cited “significantly improved on-time performance and completion factor” demonstrated by Southwest, attributing this turnaround to the airline’s substantial investments in modernizing its operations. According to DOT, these improvements justified crediting the remaining US$ 11 million rather than demanding payment. Southwest reportedly invested more than US$ 1 billion since the 2022 crisis to upgrade its internal systems, enhance crew scheduling and tracking capabilities, and overhaul its network operations. DOT said the waiver is in the “public interest,” arguing that incentivising airlines to improve reliability and resilience ultimately benefits consumers more than simply collecting a monetary penalty. In a statement, Southwest expressed gratitude, noting that the last two years saw an “operational turnaround” that delivered better on-time performance and lower cancellation rates, directly benefiting passengers.

In a message posted on the company’s website on Monday, Kenai Aviation owner Joel Caldwell said he was “devastated” by the decision but could no longer sustain operations amid mounting debt. “We have to cease all operations immediately. I am devastated,” Caldwell wrote. “Our operations may stop, but this vision continues… I believe that Flight 114 will board again. We need capital, we need partners, we need a lifeline.” Founded in 1959, Kenai Aviation originally supported Cook Inlet’s oil and gas operations before expanding into passenger and charter services across south-central Alaska. Caldwell acquired the company in 2018 and attempted to modernize its fleet and restart scheduled service to underserved communities. The company faced a growing debt burden dating back to the pandemic period, which intensified after its King Air aircraft, a key asset serving the Anchorage Unalakleet route, was grounded for maintenance. With the airline’s exit, the village now lacks a regularly scheduled passenger carrier. According to aviation data provider OAG, total seat capacity in the region now stands 0.5% higher than in 2019, driven primarily by robust domestic markets in countries such as India, China, and Indonesia. Independent aviation analyst Brendan Sobie described the rebound as “delayed but now very strong,” emphasizing that Asia-Pacific’s recovery trailed behind other global markets due to prolonged travel restrictions and uneven reopening policies. However, once borders reopened, pent-up demand for air travel surged, supported by economic resilience and a growing middle-class population. “The younger population and the expanding middle class are fundamental drivers of aviation growth in this region,” Sobie said. “These demographic factors are creating long-term, sustainable demand for air travel.” Domestic travel has been the engine behind the region’s growth. Data from OAG shows that China’s domestic capacity is 14% higher than 2019 levels, while India’s domestic seat capacity is up by 13%, reflecting the strength of internal connectivity and economic activity. Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and China Eastern are leading the growth in international seat capacity. Singapore Airlines is one of three Asia-Pacific carriers that have exceeded their 2019 international capacity, operating 14.1% more seats than in 2024. The other two are Scoot (+13.8%) and EVA Airways (+4.5%). The ticket prices across the region have dropped because of rapid capacity growth and tougher competition. Fares on 17 of the 20 fastest-growing routes have fallen by over 20%, with Bangkok–Shanghai (BKK–PVG) seeing the steepest decline of 71% year-on-year. Even as international capacity continues to recover more gradually, the rapid expansion of domestic networks has allowed airlines to stabilize operations and rebuild financial strength. The recovery is also being shaped by rapid technological transformation across airlines and airports. In Singapore, Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, has embraced digital solutions to improve operational efficiency. The airline’s virtual Operations Command Center (OCC), developed in partnership with OutSystems, enables real-time monitoring of flight operations and proactive disruption management. According to Leonard Tan, Regional Vice President at OutSystems, the system has improved data visibility by 90% and reduced manual processing by 60%, allowing Scoot to respond faster to operational challenges. “By digitizing core operational workflows, airlines can make better decisions, reduce costs, and enhance passenger experience,” Tan explained. The Asia-Pacific region’s aviation growth is now outpacing global averages, reflecting both market resilience and structural shifts toward efficiency. As emerging economies expand and infrastructure improves, analysts expect further growth in capacity and connectivity across the region.
