Dubai, United Arab Emirates: The Middle East is set for one of the fastest expansions in global aviation, with Airbus projecting more than 265,000 new jobs across the sector over the next 20 years. The forecast, released ahead of the Dubai Airshow cycle, highlights the region’s accelerating demand for pilots, technicians, and cabin crew as airlines expand fleets and long-haul networks. Airbus estimates the need for 69,000 pilots, 64,000 aircraft technicians, and almost 132,000 cabin crew by 2044. The hiring surge aligns with a major increase in aircraft operating in the region. The in-service fleet, currently around 1,480 aircraft, is expected to grow to 3,700 within two decades. Wide-body aircraft will make up 42% of future fleet requirements, more than double the global average. The commercial aviation services market, covering maintenance, training, operations, and air traffic management, is projected to reach US$ 30 billion over the same period. Passenger traffic is forecast to grow at a 4.4% compound annual rate, driven by population growth, expanding tourism, and rising regional trade. Airbus also notes that the Middle East’s population is expected to increase by nearly 240 million people by 2044, further boosting air-travel demand. Airbus executives say the region’s geographic advantage and growing airline networks position it as a future global connector. “The Middle East is becoming the long-haul hub now and into the future,” said Gabriel Semelas, the company’s president for Africa and the Middle East, citing the strong long-range fleet requirements throughout the Gulf. Independent economic studies also highlight how central aviation has become to the region’s future. An Oxford Economics report commissioned by Emirates Group and Dubai Airports shows the sector supported 631,000 jobs in Dubai in 2023 and contributed AED 137 billion to the emirate’s GDP. By 2030, aviation-linked employment is expected to rise to 816,000 jobs, representing nearly one in four positions in Dubai. The ongoing expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport is expected to generate 132,000 additional jobs and contribute more than AED 6.1 billion to Dubai’s GDP by the end of the decade. Training academies, maintenance providers, and regulatory authorities will need to scale rapidly to match the demand. The region’s major carriers including Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, and Saudia have already begun large recruitment drives, signalling strong near-term hiring momentum even before long-term growth peaks. The Airbus forecast signals a sustained phase of expansion for Middle Eastern aviation, positioning the region as a global employment engine and one of the most influential long-range aviation markets worldwide.

According to multiple eyewitness accounts and passenger reports, a United Airlines flight arriving from Orlando clipped the tail of another United aircraft that was stationary and preparing for departure to Houston. The collision occurred during a turn into the gate area, causing what passengers described as a “bump” during taxi. “We all felt a bump during taxi, but didn’t know it was another plane until the captain said it was,” one passenger told The New York Post. Both planes immediately halted operations and returned to the gate for inspection. United Airlines confirmed that no injuries were reported among the 328 passengers and 15 crew members aboard the two aircraft. Maintenance teams conducted post-incident assessments to determine the extent of any structural damage before clearing the affected area. The mishap unfolded as LaGuardia faced heavy congestion and high winds, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph. Flight tracking data showed average ground delays exceeding two hours, while some departures were held for more than five hours. Compounding the situation, the U.S. government shutdown has significantly reduced air-traffic control staffing levels, forcing airports to operate with limited resources. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently warned that prolonged shortages could lead to “a real risk of disaster” if the issue remains unresolved. Around 13,000 U.S. air traffic controllers are currently working without pay as the federal government shutdown drags on, raising serious concerns about aviation safety and operational reliability. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed that staffing issues now account for over half of all flight delays, compared to roughly 5% under normal conditions. Controllers, already facing a nationwide shortfall of 3,500 personnel, are reportedly working extended 10-hour shifts and six-day weeks, leading to fatigue and morale problems. The Houston-bound United aircraft was already delayed by about 90 minutes prior to the collision, according to flight records. Ground handling staff at LaGuardia temporarily suspended operations on the affected taxiway while crews assessed the incident. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation to determine whether procedural lapses, environmental factors, or limited ground visibility contributed to the contact between the two planes.

Washington, United States: As the U.S. government entered a partial shutdown at midnight on October 1, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced plans to furlough over 11,000 employees, approximately one-quarter of its workforce due to a lapse in federal funding. This move follows the Department of Transportation's notification that such furloughs would be necessary if the shutdown persisted. Despite the furloughs, more than 13,000 air traffic controllers are required to continue working without pay to maintain air traffic operations. The FAA is also proceeding with hiring and training new controllers, a departure from practices during previous shutdowns. The agency remains approximately 3,800 controllers short of its staffing targets. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has stated that about 25% of its 400 employees would be furloughed. However, the NTSB will continue to launch new investigations into air accidents and other incidents during the shutdown. Meanwhile, about 50,000 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) staff working airport security checkpoints would also continue working without pay. During the 35-day shutdown in 2019, absences among controllers and TSA officers increased as paychecks were missed, leading to longer checkpoint wait times and slowed air traffic in cities such as New York, which put pressure on lawmakers to resolve the funding impasse. Airline trade group, Airlines for America, representing carriers including United, Delta, American, and Southwest, warned that a lapse in funding could force the system to slow down, reducing efficiency and affecting travelers. The U.S. Travel Association, which represents airlines, hotels, car rental companies, and other travel businesses, estimated that even a partial shutdown could cost the U.S. travel sector approximately $1 billion per week. The FAA employs around 45,000 people, and the Transportation Department as a whole would furlough 12,200 of its 53,717 employees, including those at the FAA. The agency confirmed that essential certification activities covering commercial airplanes and engines, as well as commercial space launches would continue to ensure operational safety.
