Istanbul, Turkey: Turkish Airlines has announced a major infrastructure investment exceeding $2.3 billion to develop what it says will be the world’s largest air cargo terminal and an integrated in-flight catering facility, marking a significant expansion of its logistics and service capabilities. The project is expected to be located at Istanbul Airport, the airline’s primary hub, although final site details are yet to be formally confirmed. Once completed, the new complex will significantly expand Turkish Airlines’ cargo handling capacity and strengthen Istanbul’s position as a global aviation and logistics gateway connecting Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. According to the airline, the cargo terminal will be designed to handle several million tonnes of freight annually, far exceeding current capacity levels. Turkish Cargo, already among the world’s leading air freight operators, transported close to two million tonnes of cargo annually in recent years, and the new facility is intended to support long-term growth in global air freight demand. Alongside cargo operations, the investment includes the construction of a next-generation in-flight catering facility. The integrated design is aimed at improving efficiency, food quality control, and scalability for Turkish Airlines’ extensive passenger network, which serves more countries than any other airline globally. The airline estimates that the project will create approximately 26,000 jobs, including direct employment and roles across supporting industries such as logistics, ground handling, supply chain services, and catering operations. Turkish Airlines has positioned the investment as both a strategic aviation initiative and a broader economic development project for Türkiye. Industry analysts note that the investment aligns with Turkish Airlines’ wider expansion strategy, which includes large-scale fleet growth plans and continued emphasis on cargo as a key revenue driver. The carrier has been expanding its long-haul and widebody fleet while reinforcing Istanbul Airport’s role as a major intercontinental hub. Turkish Airlines executives have stated that the project will enhance operational resilience, reduce dependency on third-party facilities, and support the airline’s ambition to remain competitive in both passenger and cargo markets amid global supply chain shifts. New Delhi, India: India’s aviation industry is bracing for a difficult FY2026, with ICRA estimating sector-wide losses to climb to Rs 95–105 billion, almost double the Rs 55 billion loss expected in FY2025. Softening passenger growth, upcoming fleet inductions and ongoing global and domestic disruptions are set to pressure financial performance. Even so, ICRA has maintained a stable outlook for the year, supported by steady travel demand, though influenced by cross-border tensions, accident-related caution and tariff-linked challenges on the commercial side. Domestic passenger traffic in October 2025 reached 142.8 lakh, up 4.5% from October 2024 and 12.9% higher than September 2025. Capacity deployment grew 1.7% year-on-year to 99,816 departures, with passenger load factor rising to 84.7%, compared with 82.4% a year earlier. For April–October 2025, domestic traffic stood at 944.5 lakh, a 1.6% year-on-year increase. ICRA expects full-year FY2026 domestic travel to grow 4–6%, reaching 172–176 million passengers. International traffic carried by Indian airlines rose 5.8% year-on-year in September 2025, touching 28.3 lakh, though sequentially down by 5.7%. In H1 FY2026, international traffic reached 175.6 lakh, marking 9.1% growth. ICRA projects further expansion of 13–15% in FY2026. Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) remains a key cost concern. ATF prices in November 2025 were 4.4% higher year-on-year and 0.8% higher month-on-month. FY2025 had seen average ATF prices fall to Rs 95,181 per KL, about 8% lower year-on-year, but recent months have reversed that relief. Fuel constitutes 30–40% of airline operating expenses, while 35–50% of major costs are dollar-linked. The rupee’s depreciation in Q2 FY2026 led to notable forex losses for several carriers, though most remain unrealised. Fleet shortages persist. Pratt & Whitney engine problems and broader supply-chain delays resulted in around 133 aircraft being grounded across various airlines by March 2025, representing 15–17% of total industry capacity. IndiGo had 70 aircraft grounded in March 2024 due to powder-metal contamination, which reduced to about 40 by September 2025. Go Airlines, hit by similar issues, eventually grounded half its fleet in FY2024 and suspended operations. These constraints have increased operating costs through replacement leases, poorer fuel efficiency and higher spot-rental rates. Despite strong PLFs and firmer yields, profitability remains limited. The industry’s interest coverage ratio is expected to remain at 1.5–1.7 times for FY2026. Large carriers benefit from parent backing, while others continue to face liquidity stress and stretched balance sheets. The DGCA has proposed new passenger-centric norms allowing customers to cancel or modify tickets within 48 hours of booking without charges, provided the travel date is beyond five days (domestic) or fifteen days (international). Refunds are to be processed within 21 working days.

Mumbai, India: Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), the much-anticipated second airport for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, is set to commence commercial flight operations on 25 December 2025, with IndiGo and Akasa Air announcing inaugural services. IndiGo plans to connect NMIA to major domestic cities including Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, North Goa (Mopa), Jaipur, Nagpur, Kochi, and Mangalore. Ticket bookings for these routes are now open. Akasa Air will begin flights from NMIA on the same day, starting with Delhi, and will gradually introduce services to Ahmedabad, Goa (Mopa), and Kochi. The new airport, located near Ulwe in Panvel, is designed to complement the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and alleviate congestion in India’s busiest aviation hub. Phase 1 of NMIA features a single terminal and one runway, capable of handling approximately 20 million passengers annually, with expansion plans to increase capacity in subsequent phases. Early fare comparisons indicate a divergence between airlines. For instance, IndiGo’s one-way ticket from NMIA to Delhi is priced around ₹7,350, whereas Akasa Air offers the same route at ₹5,558, reflecting different pricing strategies and user-development fees at the new airport. Industry experts say NMIA’s opening is expected to create significant employment opportunities in aviation, including pilots, cabin crew, and ground staff, while providing passengers from Navi Mumbai and surrounding suburbs with more convenient access to air travel. While the 25 December launch date is confirmed, airlines are expected to release detailed schedules, aircraft types, and frequencies in the coming weeks. Full international operations will be phased in over time, with Phase 1 focused on domestic connectivity.

Sydney, Australia: Australia’s domestic aviation sector is struggling to match seat supply with surging passenger demand, with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) warning that capacity remains below pre-pandemic levels despite a full recovery in travel volumes. According to the ACCC’s Domestic Airline Competition in Australia report released in August 2025, seat capacity in June was 2.8% lower than in June 2019, even though passenger numbers had fully recovered and, in some cases, exceeded pre-COVID benchmarks. In May 2025, Australian carriers transported 5.20 million domestic passengers, up 1.6% compared with May 2019. The mismatch between supply and demand is evident in the load factor, the proportion of available seats actually sold which rose to 80.7% in June 2025 from pre-pandemic averages of about 78%. The ACCC noted that the capacity shortfall has kept airfares elevated. Although jet fuel prices dropped by 12.3% year-on-year, average fares in June 2025 were still higher than the same month last year. The regulator attributed this to limited seating availability, which has reduced the scope for last-minute fare discounts, particularly on peak routes. “The lack of significant competition and constrained supply means consumers are seeing fewer low-fare options,” the ACCC said in its report. The sector has shown notable improvements in operational reliability. April 2025 recorded an on-time arrival rate of 82.4%, the highest in three years and above the long-term average of 80.7%. Cancellations have also remained low, averaging under 2.2% in April and May, with a slight uptick to 2.4% in June. Jetstar and Virgin Australia achieved the best punctuality and cancellation performance, while Qantas reported comparatively higher cancellation rates. The capacity lag stems from a combination of structural and market factors. The collapse of Tigerair in 2020 removed a substantial share of low-cost capacity from the market. New entrants such as Bonza have struggled to establish sustainable operations, and Rex’s expansion on trunk routes has been limited. Global supply chain disruptions and manufacturing delays have also constrained fleet expansion. Aircraft delivery backlogs, driven by production issues at major manufacturers, have delayed capacity growth plans for both Qantas and Virgin Australia. Qantas Group is in the process of receiving additional aircraft, including narrowbody jets redeployed from Jetstar Asia. Virgin Australia expects delivery of six Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft by December 2025. However, much of the incoming fleet will replace older planes rather than significantly expand seating capacity. Industry analysts note that upcoming infrastructure developments could provide relief. Slot reforms at congested airports and the opening of Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport in 2026 are expected to improve access for both existing and new operators. The ACCC has repeatedly expressed concern over the high level of market concentration, with Qantas Group and Virgin Australia controlling more than 98% of the domestic market (The Australian, Aug. 12, 2025). The regulator has urged measures to encourage competition, warning that the duopoly limits consumer choice and pricing flexibility. While passenger demand has fully recovered from pandemic lows, Australia’s domestic aviation market continues to operate with constrained capacity. The ACCC expects gradual improvement as airlines take delivery of new aircraft and as infrastructure projects come online, but warns that pricing pressure may persist in the near term.
