Nevada, United States: Two people were killed after a single-engine aircraft crashed in a remote desert area southwest of Empire, Nevada, prompting a full-scale investigation by federal aviation authorities, according to local officials. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) confirmed that emergency crews located the wreckage approximately 7.5 miles southwest of Empire following a coordinated search operation on Sunday morning. Both occupants were found dead inside the aircraft upon discovery. Authorities said concerns were raised over a possibly missing aircraft that had earlier departed from Reno-Stead Airport, leading to the incident. The aircraft was later identified as a single-engine private plane, which failed to reach its intended destination for reasons that remain under investigation. At approximately 8:25 a.m. local time, WCSO received a request to assist in locating the aircraft after it was reported overdue. Search and rescue teams from the sheriff’s office, along with Pyramid Lake Fire crews, were deployed across the desert terrain surrounding the Empire. Within hours, responders located the downed aircraft in a remote area, where both individuals onboard were pronounced dead at the scene. Officials noted that the crash site lies in a sparsely populated desert region, where difficult terrain and limited visibility can slow aerial and ground search operations. The area southwest of Empire is known for open stretches of desert land, making it challenging to locate small aircraft wreckage without coordinated search support. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has taken charge of the formal investigation into the accident. Authorities have not yet released the cause of the crash, and it remains unclear what led the aircraft to go down shortly after departure.

Nagpur, India: Employees of AI Engineering Services Limited (AIESL), a Government of India undertaking under the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), have launched protests across multiple Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) bases over what workers describe as a restrictive internal policy linked to resignations, No Objection Certificates (NOCs), and employee retention. Nearly 180 AIESL technicians reportedly submitted resignations while others stopped work in protest over delays in relieving orders and experience certificates. Employees alleged that the company is delaying resignations, withholding relieving orders, and creating obstacles for staff seeking employment opportunities with other airlines and MRO operators. An AIESL employee, while speaking to Aviation Today alleged that the situation has created “mental harassment” among employees and raised concerns over labour practices within the PSU. The latest unrest began after an internal circular dated May 8, 2026, Base Maintenance Manager (Engg.) for the A-320 Major Maintenance unit, announced stringent conditions for workforce mobility. According to the circular, employees were required to: Procure approval from the AIESL CHRO before applying to external companies Obtain management approval before appearing for interviews or written examinations Route resignation and voluntary retirement cases centrally through the CHRO office Comply with the revised procedure before resignation applications would be processed Employees claim the policy effectively restricts their freedom to pursue better career opportunities. On May 14, 2026, the collective FTE Employees of AIESL submitted a formal representation to the General Manager demanding the immediate withdrawal of this "restrictive policy," alongside long-pending salary revisions, Dearness Allowance (DA), and a transparent career progression matrix. The friction prompted an immediate and stern counter-response from the top executive management; on May 15, 2026, AIESL Chief Executive Officer Sharad Agarwal issued a company-wide warning condemning the emerging labor agitation as an illegal misconduct. Citing historical rulings from the Supreme Court and a specific 2025 Delhi High Court injunction, Agarwal emphasized that PSU workers hold no legal right to strike, warning employees that continuing unauthorized absences would result in the enforcement of a strict "No Work, No Pay" mandate and potential termination of service. Workers argue that their original employment agreements only required them to serve a notice period or pay salary in lieu of notice before resignation. They allege that the new NOC requirement was introduced unilaterally and falls outside their signed contractual conditions. The protests initially gained visibility at AIESL’s Nagpur MRO facility, where employees staged a sit-in demonstration outside the General Manager’s office. The protesting employees mainly include aircraft maintenance technicians, certifying staff, support staff, and engineering personnel working at AIESL’s MRO facilities. Several employees have alleged that the company’s practices violate labour protections and Fixed Term Employment (FTE) norms introduced by the Government of India. Workers claim that despite serving notice periods or offering notice pay, some employees were not issued relieving letters or experience certificates in time, affecting their ability to join new employers. According to employees, the issue is not limited to a few resignations but reflects broader concerns over employee mobility, wages, contractual conditions, and workplace treatment. An employee associated with the protest said workers felt they were being “treated like hostages instead of employees” and accused the management of attempting to prevent skilled manpower from leaving the organisation. The matter has reportedly reached labour authorities in Nagpur. According to aviation industry reports, the Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner’s office in Nagpur clarified that resignation is a legal right of employees and that no employer can forcibly retain a worker once notice requirements have been fulfilled. Employees allege that despite such observations, implementation on the ground remains inconsistent and resignation processing continues to face delays. Industry sources indicate that India’s aviation maintenance sector is witnessing increasing demand for trained aircraft maintenance personnel due to airline expansion, fleet growth, and rising MRO activity. Private airlines and independent MRO operators have reportedly been offering significantly higher salaries and improved career progression opportunities compared to legacy PSU structures. Employees claim many skilled technicians are attempting to move to private aviation firms but are facing delays because relieving documents and approvals are not being issued on time. As of now, AIESL management has not issued a detailed public statement addressing the allegations raised by protesting employees. However, according to media reports, officials within the organisation stated that recent procedures require resignation formalities to be processed centrally through the Delhi headquarters. Some officials reportedly argued that experience certificates were not mandatory because new employers may accept candidates without them. Employees involved in the protest say the demonstrations are being organised collectively by affected technical staff and engineers at various MRO bases. The dispute has reignited discussions within the aviation sector over manpower retention, employment conditions, and the future of technical staffing within aviation PSUs. Employees involved in the protest have appealed for intervention from labour authorities, aviation regulators, media organisations, and the Ministry of Civil Aviation. They maintain that the protest is not only about resignations but also about employee rights, career mobility, and implementation of labour protections within a government-owned aviation engineering company.

All four crew members safely ejected before the aircraft crashed. The jets belonged to VAQ-129 and were performing an aerial demonstration when the collision occurred. Emergency crews responded immediately, while authorities locked down the base and launched an investigation. No civilian injuries were reported, and investigators are examining flight data and communications to determine the cause of the rare mid-air accident. Idaho, United States: Two U.S. Navy EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft collided mid-air during an aerial demonstration at the Gunfighter Skies Air Show near Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho on Sunday, forcing all four crew members to eject before the jets crashed to the ground. The collision occurred at approximately 12:10 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time, around two miles from the air base during the final day of the two-day air show, according to U.S. Navy officials. The aircraft involved belonged to Electronic Attack Squadron 129 (VAQ-129), based at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington state. U.S. Pacific Fleet spokesperson Cmdr. Amelia Umayam confirmed that both aircraft were participating in a scheduled aerial demonstration when the incident took place. She said all four aircrew members ejected safely and survived the crash. “The incident is under investigation. More information will be released as it becomes available,” Umayam said. Videos recorded by spectators and widely circulated online captured the dramatic moment the two Growlers made contact in the air before spiraling downward. Footage showed debris falling from the aircraft as parachutes opened seconds later, confirming the successful ejection of the crews. Witnesses at the venue reported seeing four parachutes descending near the crash site. Emergency response teams, including firefighting crews and rescue helicopters, rushed to the area shortly after impact. The crash reportedly sparked a brush fire near State Highway 167, which authorities later closed for several days to secure the wreckage area and support the investigation. Mountain Home Air Force Base was temporarily locked down following the collision, while officials canceled the remainder of the air show. Local law enforcement and emergency management agencies established a large safety perimeter around the crash site. The EA-18G Growler is the U.S. Navy’s primary airborne electronic attack aircraft and is derived from the Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet platform. The aircraft is designed for radar jamming, electronic surveillance and suppression of enemy air defenses. Each Growler typically carries a crew of two: a pilot and an electronic warfare officer. The aircraft involved were part of the Navy’s “Vikings” Growler demonstration team, one of the featured attractions at the Gunfighter Skies Air Show. The event marked the return of the air show after an eight-year gap. The last edition in 2018 ended in tragedy after a hang glider pilot was killed in a separate crash incident. The crews may have remained in controlled flight briefly after impact, giving them enough time to coordinate successful ejections. No civilian injuries or spectator casualties were reported. Investigators from the U.S. Navy are expected to examine flight data, maintenance records, pilot communications and video footage to determine the exact cause of the collision. While no official cause has been identified.

British Airways Flight Delayed After Accidental Slide Deployment At Heathrow SEO DES: A new British Airways crew member accidentally deployed an emergency slide before takeoff, delaying the Heathrow-Washington flight by 6 hours SOCIAL: A British Airways Boeing 777 flight from London Heathrow to Washington Dulles was delayed over six hours after a newly trained cabin crew member accidentally deployed an emergency evacuation slide during pushback preparations. The incident occurred at Heathrow Terminal 5 when the crew member mistakenly opened an armed Door 3L shortly after the “doors to automatic” command. Passengers were asked to disembark while engineers replaced the slide and inspected the aircraft before it departed later in the evening. Image: N509FZ (Wikimedia) Video: British airways London, United Kingdom: A British Airways transatlantic flight from London Heathrow to Washington Dulles was delayed for more than six hours after an emergency evacuation slide accidentally deployed during departure preparations, triggering a major ground response and forcing passengers to disembark. The incident involved British Airways flight BA217, operated by a Boeing 777-200 aircraft, on May 16 at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5. According to multiple aviation reports, the aircraft had begun pushback procedures when the slide deployed unexpectedly from one of the left-side cabin doors. The incident occurred at approximately 12:35 pm local time while the 26-year-old Boeing 777 was preparing for departure to Washington Dulles International Airport. Emergency services responded to the aircraft after the slide deployment, and passengers were asked to leave the aircraft while maintenance teams assessed the situation. A newly qualified cabin crew member mistakenly opened an armed aircraft door shortly after receiving the standard “doors to automatic” command. That command is used by cabin crew to arm evacuation slides before departure so they deploy automatically if the door is opened during an emergency. The crew member was believed to have been operating only his second flight after completing initial training. Instead of simply arming the door system, the flight attendant allegedly activated the door-opening mechanism, causing the slide to inflate automatically. The emergency slide deployed at Door 3L, the third door on the left side of the aircraft. The activation also reportedly triggered the aircraft’s power-assist door system, which forced the door open during pushback. British Airways later confirmed the disruption and apologised to passengers for the lengthy delay. In a statement, the airline said its teams worked to get customers “on their way as quickly as possible.” The same aircraft was eventually cleared for service following engineering inspections and replacement procedures for the deployed slide. The flight later departed Heathrow at around 7 pm local time, significantly behind schedule.

Delhi Slashes ATF VAT From 25% To 7% For Six Months Amid Rising Fuel Costs SEO DES: Delhi cut ATF VAT to lower airline costs and stabilise fares as fuel forms 30–40% of expenses; annual revenue loss may reach ₹985 crore SOCIAL: The Delhi government has cut VAT on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) from 25% to 7% for six months to support airlines amid rising fuel costs and the ongoing West Asia crisis. The decision was approved by the Cabinet led by Rekha Gupta. Officials said the move aims to reduce airline operating costs and stabilise airfares, as ATF accounts for nearly 30–40% of airline expenses. The tax cut may lead to an estimated annual revenue loss of around ₹985 crore for Delhi. The move follows Maharashtra’s recent ATF VAT reduction. Delhi said lower aviation taxes would strengthen connectivity and support operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport, India’s busiest airport. New Delhi, India: The Delhi government has reduced the Value Added Tax (VAT) on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) from 25 per cent to 7 per cent for an initial period of six months, in a move aimed at easing operational pressure on airlines and stabilising airfares amid rising global fuel volatility linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis. The decision was approved during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. In an official statement issued after the meeting, the Delhi government said, “Delhi government has decided to reduce the value-added tax (VAT) on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) from the existing 25 per cent to 7 per cent, a move which is likely to benefit the airlines and common passengers.” The concessional VAT rate will remain in effect for six months initially, according to the Chief Minister’s Office. Officials said the measure has been introduced against the backdrop of increasing pressure on the aviation industry due to geopolitical instability, fluctuating crude oil prices and operational disruptions caused by tensions in West Asia. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the move as a “major economic decision” taken during a period of “global crisis and rising competition,” adding that the government intends to support aviation growth, tourism, logistics and overall economic activity in the national capital. The Delhi government acknowledged that the tax reduction could result in an estimated annual revenue loss of nearly ₹985 crore. Despite the expected revenue impact, the administration stated that improving connectivity and maintaining Delhi’s competitiveness as India’s largest aviation hub remained a priority. According to official data shared by the government, VAT on ATF currently contributes around ₹1,368 crore annually to Delhi’s revenues and accounts for nearly 19 per cent of the government’s total yearly VAT collection. The government also highlighted that ATF continues to remain outside the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. Although GST has been in force nationwide since 2017, states retain the authority to levy VAT on six petroleum products, including aviation turbine fuel, under the State List of the Constitution. Industry estimates cited by the Delhi government indicate that ATF accounts for nearly 30–40 per cent of an airline’s operating expenses, making fuel one of the largest cost components for carriers. Officials said persistent fuel price pressure caused by geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions and periodic airspace restrictions has significantly affected airline balance sheets and domestic ticket pricing. The announcement came a day after the Maharashtra government reduced VAT on ATF from 18 per cent to 7 per cent for six months, effective May 15. Maharashtra officials stated that the move was aimed at providing relief to airlines and passengers amid rising operational costs linked to the West Asia crisis and elevated crude oil prices. Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu welcomed Maharashtra’s decision and thanked Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for the “timely intervention,” saying the move would help keep airfares under control during a period of rising global cost pressures. Delhi also underlined the strategic importance of Indira Gandhi International Airport, which handled nearly eight crore passengers during FY2024-25, making it the country’s busiest airport. The government said maintaining competitive aviation taxes would help strengthen Delhi’s position as India’s primary aviation, trade and logistics hub. Officials further noted that several states continue to impose significantly higher VAT rates on aviation fuel. According to government data cited in reports, Tamil Nadu currently levies the highest VAT on ATF at 29 per cent, followed by West Bengal at 25 per cent. The aviation sector has been facing mounting operational challenges in recent months, including airspace closures, route diversions and rising fuel costs triggered by escalating tensions in West Asia. Analysts expect the tax reduction measures by Delhi and Maharashtra to offer temporary relief to airlines operating domestic services from major hubs.

Gauteng, South Africa: South Africa’s aviation safety authorities have raised fresh concerns over the state of general aviation and pilot training operations after a sharp rise in fatal accidents and fatalities during the 2025/26 financial year, despite an overall decline in total accidents. Data presented by the Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) of the South African Civil Aviation Authority at the NAC 2026 conference in Gauteng revealed that while total accidents fell to 76, the second-lowest figure ever recorded fatal accidents surged from four to 17 within a year, with fatalities climbing to 24, the highest toll since 2021. The findings paint a troubling picture for Africa’s flight training and general aviation environment, where safety experts say human factors, weak operational oversight and weather-related decision-making failures continue to expose student pilots and low-hour aviators to elevated risk. According to the AIID data, Aviation Training Organisations (ATOs) recorded 19 accidents during 2025/26, down from 26 the previous year and 30 in 2023/24. However, training-related serious incidents rose dramatically from four in 2024/25 to 19 in 2025/26, signalling growing operational stress within the sector. The report identified flight crew and pilot actions as the leading causal factor in 55% of accidents investigated, reinforcing concerns about pilot judgment, risk assessment and airmanship standards. AIID Executive Themba Thabethe warned that the industry’s declining accident numbers should not obscure the underlying severity of recent crashes, particularly in general aviation and training environments where fatal outcomes are rising disproportionately. The presentation highlighted that South Africa averaged more than six accidents per month during the reporting period, while the fatal accident rate increased sharply from 3% to 22%. Investigators said the most persistent safety threats remain concentrated in general aviation, non-type certified aircraft and training operations segments that dominate pilot development pipelines across Africa. The report also showed that non-type certified aircraft and general aviation categories continued to represent the highest-risk operational areas. A series of recent accident case studies presented by AIID revealed recurring patterns involving deteriorating weather, continuation bias, inadequate safety management oversight and pilots pressing into instrument meteorological conditions despite warnings. On 9 June 2025 an accident involving a Piper PA-28-180 operating under Part 91 rules ended in a crash landing near Greytown after pilots departed despite severe weather warnings issued for KwaZulu-Natal. A related aircraft in the formation flight was destroyed, killing three people, including a student pilot. Investigators identified spatial disorientation and poor go/no-go decision-making as central factors. Another fatal October 2025 accident involving a Sling 2 aircraft operated by an ATO highlighted concerns surrounding student-level endorsements and weather risk assessment after the pilot encountered deteriorating conditions over mountainous terrain in KwaZulu-Natal. The pilot was killed after the aircraft crashed near Boston in the Midlands. AIID said the investigations demonstrated “cross-cutting lessons” affecting the wider training environment, including poor pre-flight risk culture, inadequate Safety Management Systems (SMS) oversight and pilots continuing flights incrementally into worsening conditions instead of diverting. The authority further noted that visual meteorological conditions at departure often created a false sense of security for inexperienced pilots, particularly in terrain-heavy regions where weather conditions deteriorate rapidly. While the airline sector maintained a zero fatal accident rate, investigators cautioned that serious incidents involving larger commercial operations under Part 121 regulations increased from one to six cases during the year, warranting “focused monitoring and intervention.” The report nevertheless contrasted the challenges facing general aviation with South Africa’s strong airline safety record. The country has not experienced a fatal airline accident on its soil in more than 59 years, while no fatal accident involving a South African airline operator has occurred in over 39 years. International benchmarking presented by AIID showed South Africa’s fatal accident average of approximately 11% remains broadly comparable with Australia and Canada. However, investigators stressed that the sharp rise in fatal accidents during 2025/26 demands “absolute improvement.” Safety officials said the data highlights a critical challenge facing Africa’s aviation growth ambitions: expanding pilot training capacity while maintaining robust operational discipline and oversight standards. The AIID concluded that sustained accident reduction will depend on strengthening Safety Management Systems across general aviation and training operations, improving pilot decision-making and continuing aggressive implementation of safety recommendations. 9 11 8 4

Hyderabad, India: Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace has become India’s first space-tech unicorn after raising $60 million in a major funding round led by Sherpalo Ventures and Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC, marking a defining moment for the country’s rapidly expanding private space sector. The funding round pushed the company’s valuation to approximately $1.1 billion, making it the first Indian private space startup to cross the unicorn threshold. The round saw participation from funds managed by BlackRock, founders of Greenko Group, Arkam Ventures, Playbook Partners, Shanghvi Family Office and several existing investors. With this latest infusion, Skyroot’s total funding has climbed to nearly $160 million since its founding in 2018. The company said the fresh capital will be used to increase launch frequency, expand manufacturing capacity, accelerate development of its heavier-lift Vikram-2 rocket and strengthen its commercial launch operations globally. Founded by former ISRO scientists Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, Skyroot emerged from Hyderabad’s growing deep-tech ecosystem and became one of the earliest startups incubated at T-Hub. The company was established shortly after the Indian government opened the space sector to private participation in 2020, enabling startups to access ISRO facilities and infrastructure. Skyroot later became the first private Indian company to formally sign an agreement with ISRO for testing and launch support. Skyroot first entered global headlines in November 2022 after successfully launching Vikram-S, India’s first privately developed rocket to reach space. The suborbital mission, named “Mission Prarambh,” was launched from Sriharikota and reached an apogee of nearly 89.5 kilometres, establishing the company as a pioneer in India’s commercial launch industry. The company is now preparing for the maiden orbital launch of Vikram-1, which is expected to become India’s first privately developed orbital launch vehicle. Skyroot has positioned the Vikram series as low-cost, rapidly deployable launch systems designed primarily for the growing global small satellite market. According to the company, the Vikram rockets incorporate extensive use of carbon composite structures, modular architecture and 3D-printed engines to reduce manufacturing timelines and operational costs. Skyroot has repeatedly stated that its long-term objective is to make space launches as reliable, regular and affordable as commercial aviation. Sherpalo Ventures founder Ram Shriram, one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent early technology investors and an early Google backer, is expected to join Skyroot’s board following the investment. Sherpalo had previously invested in the company during earlier funding rounds as well. Skyroot’s rise also reflects Hyderabad’s emergence as a major aerospace and defence innovation hub. Telangana leaders, including former IT minister KT Rama Rao, described the milestone as a validation of the state’s long-term focus on innovation infrastructure and deep-tech incubation through platforms such as T-Hub and T-Works. In recent years, Skyroot has significantly expanded its infrastructure footprint. In 2023, the company unveiled “MAX-Q,” described as India’s largest private integrated rocket development facility near Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The company has also signed agreements with the Telangana government to establish integrated private rocket manufacturing, integration and testing facilities in the state. The startup has additionally developed multiple propulsion technologies under its “Kalam” engine series, named after former President and aerospace scientist APJ Abdul Kalam. Among its milestones were successful tests of the Kalam-5 and Kalam-100 rocket motors, both intended for use in the Vikram launch vehicles. The company has claimed these systems represent some of the largest privately developed rocket stages tested in India. Skyroot’s unicorn milestone comes amid growing momentum in India’s private spacetech sector, with companies such as Agnikul Cosmos, Pixxel, Bellatrix Aerospace and Dhruva Space also attracting increasing investor interest and international partnerships. Analysts believe the country’s lower launch costs, engineering talent base and expanding satellite market position India as a major future player in the global commercial space industry. Chief executive Pawan Kumar Chandana recently said global demand for satellite launches and international customers would become a major long-term revenue driver for the company as commercial launch requirements continue rising worldwide.

Kansas City, United States: An American Airlines regional jet operating as American Eagle Flight 5318 made an emergency landing after smoke was reported inside the cabin while the aircraft was approaching its destination in Kansas City, according to airline officials and air traffic control recordings. The flight, operated by PSA Airlines using a Bombardier CRJ-900 regional jet, had departed from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and was en route to Kansas City with 76 passengers and crew members onboard. The emergency unfolded shortly before landing when the crew detected smoke inside the aircraft. Air traffic control audio captured the pilot declaring an emergency as the aircraft neared the airport. In the transmission, the pilot stated, “Bluestreak 5318, declaring an emergency. We’re landing,” signaling the urgency of the situation. The aircraft was reportedly about two miles from the runway when the emergency was declared. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched and positioned along the runway as the jet prepared for landing. The aircraft landed safely without further incident. Following touchdown, passengers were evacuated onto the taxiway as firefighters and emergency personnel inspected the aircraft. Images and videos shared online showed passengers exiting through overwing exits and standing on the tarmac while first responders surrounded the regional jet. Among those onboard was U.S. Congressman Tracey Mann, who later shared details of the incident on social media. In a video posted after the landing, Mann thanked emergency responders and confirmed smoke had been detected onboard the aircraft. “There was smoke on our aircraft and so we landed and are now sitting on the tarmac,” he said in the video, while also expressing appreciation for airport fire and rescue crews responding to the emergency. American Airlines later issued a statement emphasizing that passenger and crew safety remained the airline’s highest priority. The carrier apologized to customers for the disruption and said maintenance teams would inspect the aircraft to determine the source of the smoke indication. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed it has opened an investigation into the incident. Smoke or fumes inside an aircraft cabin are treated as serious in-flight emergencies because they can indicate electrical malfunctions, overheating systems, or other onboard hazards that may escalate rapidly if not contained. No injuries were immediately reported following the emergency landing, and passengers were later assisted by airline personnel at the airport while arrangements for onward travel were being made.

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

START: India is emerging as the fastest-growing aviation market worldwide, yet it faces a significant hurdle: a shortage of trained technical personnel, including pilots, engineers, and technicians. This challenge is expected to become more acute as Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles enter the market within the next year or two, creating an additional need for pilots. The issue stems largely from inadequate planning and foresight by the authorities. Consequently, many aspiring Indian pilots are pursuing training in countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bosnia, Montenegro, and the Philippines. In fact, approximately 700 out of every 1,000 commercial pilot licenses issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are earned abroad. India’s Potential as a Global Hub for Aviation Education Considering India’s expansive geography and favorable weather for flying, the country is ideally suited to be a global hub for aviation education. In the 1980s and 1990s, students from nations such as Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and several African countries came to India for flight training. Today, the trend has reversed, with Indian students going overseas for pilot education. One key reason is the slow pace of domestic training programs and the cumbersome security clearance process for foreign students, which discourages them from enrolling in India. Competition from International Flight Schools Meanwhile, nations like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have established world-class flight schools. Students from neighboring Arab countries now mostly prefer the United States, Canada, and Europe for training, despite these regions lacking ideal weather for primary flight instruction. Domestic regulations further complicate matters. The DGCA allows a flight school to operate only if it meets minimum requirements for aircraft and paid-up capital, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) imposes additional capital requirements. These rules do not guarantee quality education but are often sufficient to prevent many capable entrepreneurs from opening flight schools. By contrast, an Indian entrepreneur started a flight school in New Zealand with a single rented aircraft, which has since expanded to a fleet of over 20 planes and now attracts Indian students. Shortage of Trainer Aircraft The shortage of trainer aircraft is another pressing challenge. In the 1970s, Prof. David Hazen of Princeton University, invited by the Indian government to establish the first aeronautical department at IIT Kanpur, outlined a roadmap for India to achieve self-reliance in aviation training. However, progress has been slow. The DGCA developed the Swati light aircraft, manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), but a fatal accident during testing brought the program to an end. Similarly, the Hansa trainer created by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) was rejected by most flight schools. Lessons from the Pushpak Aircraft A comparison with the Pushpak aircraft is instructive. Manufactured in the 1950s, HAL produced 160 Pushpaks, which served India reliably for over 50 years and maintained an excellent safety record. In 1968, the government gifted one Pushpak each to Singapore and Malaysia to help them establish their flight training programs. The Pushpak’s success was largely due to it being modeled closely on the proven US Aeronca Chief. NAL later developed the next-generation Hansa (NG Hansa), which was showcased at the 2020 Wings India airshow, but production has yet to start, and setting up the necessary infrastructure would still take several years even if action begins immediately. Global Trainer Aircraft Shortages and LSAs The shortage of trainer aircraft is not unique to India. Major manufacturers such as Cessna and Piper had slowed production, underestimating demand, and now struggle to meet global requirements. Other countries have tackled this problem by incorporating Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs) into flight training. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, LSAs are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and widely used in the US and EU for commercial pilot instruction. However, Indian regulations currently do not permit LSAs for commercial pilot training. Despite being equipped with only a magnetic compass, pilots trained on Pushpaks have gone on to fly advanced aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A320. Allowing LSAs in India could reduce aircraft shortages, encourage domestic manufacturing, generate employment, and attract foreign investment. Lack of Experienced Flight Instructors The lack of experienced flight instructors adds another layer of difficulty. Rapid growth in airlines such as Indigo and Air India has led many instructors to leave training schools for better pay, career progression, and recognition in commercial aviation. This high turnover leaves less-experienced instructors teaching students, unlike other professional fields where teachers usually have extensive industry experience. In countries like the US, airline pilots can provide primary flight training in their spare time, giving trainees the advantage of learning from seasoned professionals and ensuring higher safety standards. Without urgent, proactive measures, India will continue to rely on foreign nations to fulfill the increasing demand for skilled professionals in its civil aviation sector. https://www.hindustantimes.com/ht-insight/knowledge/flight-training-a-challenge-in-civil-aviation-101727069965710.html
