Detroit, United States: A Delta Air Lines Connection flight operating from Madison, Wisconsin, to Detroit, Michigan, declared a medical emergency after the co-pilot briefly lost consciousness during the aircraft’s approach and landing phase, according to airline statements and air traffic control (ATC) communications. The incident occurred on May 23, 2026, aboard a flight operated by Endeavor Air, a wholly owned regional subsidiary of Delta Air Lines. The aircraft departed from Dane County Regional Airport and was arriving at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport when the emergency unfolded. According to ATC audio, the captain informed controllers that the first officer had become incapacitated during the approach. In the transmission, the captain stated: “Declaring a medical emergency, my first officer’s incapacitated.” Air traffic controllers subsequently cleared the aircraft for priority landing. The aircraft landed safely in Detroit without further incident. Delta confirmed that paramedics met the flight after it taxied to the gate and that the first officer had regained consciousness by the time emergency personnel boarded the aircraft. The co-pilot was then transported to a hospital for medical evaluation. Flight tracking data indicated the flight completed the journey in approximately one hour and arrived around 20 minutes ahead of schedule despite the emergency declaration. No passengers or cabin crew members were reported injured during the incident. In a statement, Delta said safety remained its highest priority and praised the crew’s handling of the situation. The airline stated that the professionalism of the Endeavor Air crew and the response of emergency personnel helped ensure the flight concluded safely. The airline did not disclose the medical cause behind the co-pilot’s temporary loss of consciousness. There was also no indication of any technical or mechanical issue involving the aircraft itself. The incident also came days after another unrelated pilot medical emergency involving a Jet2.com flight traveling from Tenerife, Spain, to Birmingham, United Kingdom, which diverted to Porto, Portugal, after one of the pilots reportedly became unwell mid-flight.

Tokyo, Japan: A Skymark Airlines Boeing 737 operating a domestic flight from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport to Fukuoka made an emergency return on Monday after the crew detected a landing gear tire abnormality mid-flight, later confirmed to involve a ruptured tire, according to Japan’s transport ministry and airline officials. The aircraft, carrying 169 passengers and crew, departed Haneda shortly after 3 p.m. local time and proceeded normally for nearly two hours before the flight crew identified a technical issue related to the landing gear system. Following standard safety procedures, the pilots declared an emergency and initiated a precautionary return to Haneda Airport. The aircraft landed safely back at Haneda without any injuries reported among passengers or crew members. The airline confirmed that all onboard remained safe throughout the incident and that the situation was handled in line with established emergency protocols. After landing, inspections conducted by airport authorities and Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism confirmed that one of the aircraft’s tires had ruptured. Officials have not yet determined whether the damage occurred during takeoff, in-flight, or during landing gear operation after departure. Following the emergency landing, Haneda Airport temporarily closed Runway C to conduct safety inspections and remove any possible debris or rubber residue. The runway was later reopened at around 7:40 p.m. local time after checks confirmed safe operating conditions and no structural damage. Skymark Airlines operates a major domestic network from Haneda, connecting key cities across Japan, including Fukuoka, Sapporo, and Okinawa. The airline has not reported any further operational disruptions related to the incident, though the aircraft will undergo a detailed technical inspection before returning to service. Authorities are continuing to review the cause of the tire rupture as part of standard post-incident safety procedures.

Abuja, Nigeria: Nigeria’s domestic aviation sector has entered a fresh regulatory dispute after the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) placed 11 airlines on a “No-Pay-No-Service” list over alleged unpaid statutory obligations, prompting strong denials from airline operators and raising concerns over potential operational disruptions across the country. The directive, contained in an internal NCAA memo dated May 22, 2026, instructed all directorates and regional offices of the regulator not to provide services to affected airlines without clearance from the Directorate of Finance and Accounts. The memo was signed by Olufemi Odukoya, NCAA’s Director of Finance and Accounts, and copied to the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Capt. Chris Najomo, along with senior officials within the authority. The airlines named in the updated “No-Pay-No-Service” list are: Air Peace Ibom Air Arik Air United Nigeria Airlines Umza Air NG Eagle Max Air Caverton Helicopters Overland Airways Rano Air ValueJet According to the memo, “no directorate should render any service to the above airlines without financial clearance from the Director of Finance and Accounts.” The NCAA argued that the move was necessary because airlines had failed to meet outstanding financial obligations owed to the regulator. At the center of the dispute are the statutory five percent Ticket Sales Charge (TSC) and Cargo Sales Charge (CSC), levies collected by airlines on behalf of the NCAA from passengers and cargo operators. The regulator relies heavily on these remittances to fund safety oversight, inspections, personnel obligations, economic regulation and other administrative responsibilities within Nigeria’s aviation sector. However, the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), representing domestic carriers, rejected the allegations and described reports suggesting airlines were indebted to the NCAA as inaccurate. According to the operators, many NCAA services are already paid for in advance under a “cash-before-service” arrangement, making the regulator’s characterization misleading. The airlines reportedly argued that the disputed amounts relate mainly to the Ticket Sales Charge collection system rather than direct service debts. Industry operators also renewed calls for reforms to Nigeria’s aviation charging structure, urging the government to amend regulations so the NCAA can collect the five percent TSC directly from passengers instead of routing collections through airlines. Carriers argue that the current system exposes them to banking charges, reconciliation complications and financial pressure amid rising operational costs. The latest dispute comes during a difficult financial period for Nigerian airlines, which continue to face mounting economic challenges driven by soaring Jet A1 fuel prices, foreign exchange shortages, high maintenance expenses, airport charges and weak profit margins. In April 2026, domestic carriers had warned of possible operational shutdowns due to escalating fuel costs and debt burdens. Following negotiations with airline operators, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu approved, in principle, a 30 percent reduction or write-off of debts owed by airlines to aviation agencies as part of broader relief measures aimed at stabilizing the sector. The ICIR reported that Tinubu approved the debt relief initiative on April 23, 2026, though implementation had not commenced as of late May. Explaining the delay, NCAA Director-General Capt. Chris Najomo stated that the process required consultations with airlines and aviation agencies before execution. Another aviation consultant, Adeola Fadairo, defended the NCAA’s action, arguing that the Ticket Sales Charge belongs to the regulator and should not be retained by airlines to offset operational shortfalls. He described non-remittance of statutory levies as a serious breach of public trust and corporate responsibility. Meanwhile, United Nigeria Airlines confirmed it had opened discussions with the NCAA regarding the matter, while several other affected airlines had not publicly commented at the time of reporting. However, the NCAA later suspended enforcement of the “No-Pay-No-Service” directive following industry backlash and concerns that the move could disrupt airline operations, licensing processes and other regulatory services. The regulator said the temporary relief would allow further consultations with airlines and aviation stakeholders over the disputed Ticket Sales Charges and outstanding obligations.

Muscat, Oman: An Air India Express Boeing 737-800 operating flight IX712 from Muscat to Kannur suffered significant damage during a nighttime takeoff attempt at Muscat International Airport on May 15 after the aircraft reportedly lined up with runway edge lights instead of the runway centreline, triggering a high-speed rejected takeoff and a formal accident investigation by Omani authorities. The incident came to public attention nearly nine days later, on May 24, after regulatory sources in Oman confirmed details of the occurrence. The 18-year-old Boeing 737-800 had been preparing to depart Muscat for the approximately three-hour service to Kannur on the night of May 15. During lineup for departure from Runway 26L, the aircraft allegedly tracked the right-hand runway edge lights rather than positioning itself on the runway centreline. As the aircraft accelerated for takeoff at approximately 9:10 pm local time after entering the runway via taxiway E7, the Boeing 737 struck multiple runway edge lights, destroying several of them during the takeoff roll. Flight crew reportedly aborted the takeoff after hearing a loud bang and receiving cockpit warnings. The aircraft sustained substantial damage during the incident. Reports stated that the nose landing gear was damaged, at least one tyre deflated, and hydraulic system leaks were observed after the rejected takeoff. Aviation sources also indicated that debris from shattered runway lights may have been ingested into the engines, potentially causing additional engine damage. The aircraft became disabled on the runway following the rejected takeoff, forcing passengers and crew to disembark directly onto the runway surface while emergency teams responded. However, authorities have not officially confirmed all operational details surrounding the evacuation sequence. The aircraft has reportedly remained grounded in Muscat since the incident while technical inspections and investigative work continue. Oman’s Air Accidents Investigation Sector (AAIS) has classified the occurrence as an “accident” rather than a minor incident, underlining the seriousness of the event. Investigators are now examining cockpit procedures, runway lighting conditions, pilot situational awareness, airport surface markings, and other operational factors that may have contributed to the alignment error during nighttime operations.

London, United Kingdom: UK-based private charter operator Zenith Aviation has entered administration after mounting financial difficulties forced the company to suspend operations, resulting in the loss of 41 jobs and the grounding of its fleet. The company, headquartered at London Biggin Hill Airport, officially entered administration on May 15, 2026, with insolvency specialist Nexus Corporate Solutions appointed to oversee the process. Administrators cited cashflow problems, unpaid debts, and longstanding ownership and management complications as the primary reasons behind the collapse. According to administrator Paul Hargreaves, Zenith Aviation had become insolvent after struggling to recover payments from debtors while also facing operational instability linked to previous ownership transitions. The administrator confirmed that all ongoing operations had effectively ceased while the company’s assets and future options were being evaluated. The collapse immediately affected 41 employees, many of whom are now being assisted with statutory redundancy claims. Administrators stated they are exploring possible rescue packages, restructuring options, or a potential buyout of the company should a viable investor emerge. Although Zenith Aviation operated primarily within the business aviation and executive charter sector rather than scheduled commercial passenger services, the shutdown reportedly disrupted several booked charter operations and left clients seeking alternative operators. Social media reports and aviation community posts indicated that some passengers and charter customers were left stranded following the abrupt halt in flights. The United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) subsequently suspended Zenith Aviation’s Air Operator Certificate (AOC), effectively preventing the airline from conducting commercial flight operations. The suspension involved two aircraft listed under the operator’s certificate, including a 2004-built Bombardier Learjet 40 and a 2016-built Learjet 75. Fleet records show the Learjet 40 had remained operational until late October 2025, while the Learjet 75 last flew in December 2025 between Altenrhein and London Biggin Hill. Another Learjet 45 owned by the company reportedly never entered active service despite joining the fleet in 2025. The administration follows a turbulent ownership period for the operator. In April 2025, OPUL Jets acquired Zenith Aviation in a move aimed at strengthening its UK and European charter capabilities. The acquisition included Zenith’s UK-issued AOC, managed aircraft fleet, and CAA-approved Part-145 maintenance facility. At the time, OPUL Jets described the acquisition as strategically important in the post-Brexit aviation environment. However, OPUL Jets relinquished control of Zenith Aviation in December 2025, after which British national Touseef Tariq was appointed director. Industry reports suggest the transition created additional operational and management complications that contributed to the company’s worsening financial position. Zenith Aviation had built a reputation within the UK business aviation market over more than a decade of operations, specialising in executive charter flights, aircraft management, maintenance services, and private jet operations using Learjet platforms. The collapse comes amid broader pressure across segments of the global aviation industry, particularly among smaller regional and boutique operators facing rising operating costs, fluctuating charter demand, financing challenges, and post-pandemic market instability. Administrators are currently assessing Zenith Aviation’s remaining assets while considering whether portions of the business can be rescued or sold to new investors, with its operating licence suspended and all charter operations halted.

Hong Kong, China: A Cathay Pacific Airbus A350-900 operating flight CX156 from Brisbane to Hong Kong encountered severe turbulence during the early hours of May 23, injuring 10 people and forcing emergency medical assistance upon arrival at Hong Kong International Airport. The aircraft, identified as an Airbus A350-941 registered B-LRV, departed Brisbane shortly after midnight and was approximately two hours from landing in Hong Kong when the turbulence struck unexpectedly during breakfast service in the economy cabin. Cathay Pacific confirmed that six cabin crew members and four passengers sustained injuries in the incident. Eight of them were later transported to hospitals in Hong Kong for further medical treatment and observation after the aircraft landed safely at approximately 6:45 a.m. local time, a Cathay spokesman said. Passengers onboard described scenes of panic as the aircraft suddenly dropped in altitude for several seconds. One traveler compared the experience to “free-falling from a drop tower,” while others reported hearing screams throughout the cabin as unsecured items, food trays, coffee cups and mobile phones were thrown into the air. The turbulence reportedly occurred without prior warning while cabin crew were actively serving meals in the aisles, leaving many passengers and crew unrestrained at the time of impact. Several overhead lockers reportedly opened during the violent jolts, while food carts overturned and cabin debris scattered across the aircraft interior. Some reports also indicated that oxygen masks deployed in parts of the cabin following the sudden movement. Photographs circulating on social media after the incident showed extensive cabin disruption, including food-covered aisles, damaged service equipment and scattered personal belongings. One injured flight attendant was reportedly seen being transported in a neck brace after landing. Several passengers said the turbulence appeared to originate from an unexpected weather system or thunderstorm activity encountered during night operations. One passenger said there had been no seatbelt warning prior to the event and speculated that a storm cell may not have been visible on radar in the darkness. However, aviation observers and later reports suggested the aircraft may have encountered severe clear-air turbulence, which can occur suddenly without visible cloud formations or advanced warning to pilots. Medical professionals traveling onboard reportedly assisted injured passengers and crew members for the remainder of the flight until emergency responders boarded the aircraft in Hong Kong. Airport medical teams and ambulances had been placed on standby before arrival after authorities were informed of the turbulence event. Cathay Pacific said the affected passengers and crew received immediate care following the landing and stated that safety remains the airline’s highest priority. The carrier added that it would continue providing assistance to those injured.

Porto, Portugal: A Jet2 passenger flight travelling from Tenerife, Spain, to Birmingham, United Kingdom, was forced to make an emergency diversion to Portugal after one of the pilots suffered a serious medical emergency while the aircraft was cruising at approximately 30,000 feet. The incident involved Jet2 Flight LS1266, operated by an Airbus A321, carrying around 220 passengers and crew. The aircraft departed Tenerife late on May 21 and was en route to Birmingham when the cockpit emergency unfolded during the early hours of May 22. Several passengers later described scenes of panic onboard after the cabin crew suddenly rushed through the cabin asking whether any doctors or medically trained passengers were onboard. According to passengers flashing cabin lights and the rapid descent of the aircraft woke sleeping travellers. Families travelling with children described distress inside the cabin, with several passengers reporting that crying babies and panic among travellers added to the tense atmosphere during the emergency diversion. Some passengers alleged that cabin crew appeared visibly distressed while attempting to assist the incapacitated pilot. The First Officer reportedly took immediate control of the aircraft after the captain became incapacitated. The Airbus A321 then diverted toward Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, where emergency medical teams were already positioned on the runway before landing. The aircraft touched down safely at approximately 2:11 a.m. local time. Medical responders boarded the aircraft immediately after arrival and transported the affected pilot to a nearby hospital for treatment. While several passenger accounts stated that the pilot suffered a heart attack, Jet2 has not officially confirmed the exact medical condition. The airline only stated that one of the pilots became “unwell” during the flight and emphasized that “at no point was safety compromised.” Passengers were reportedly left stranded in Portugal for more than 13 hours following the emergency landing. Some travellers complained about delays in disembarkation, lack of immediate accommodation and limited communication regarding onward travel arrangements. Jet2 later dispatched a replacement pilot from Manchester to continue the journey to Birmingham.

Aligarh, India: A training aircraft belonging to a private flying club made an emergency landing in an agricultural field in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district on Sunday after suffering a technical malfunction during a routine training sortie, with both occupants escaping safely, according to the officials and PTI . The aircraft involved in the incident was identified as a Diamond DA-40, a single-engine, four-seater trainer aircraft bearing registration VT-PFB, which was operating from Dhanipur Airport in Aligarh when the crew reported a mid-air technical snag prompting the pilots to carry out a precautionary landing in a field near Changeyri (also reported as Changari) village under the Harduaganj police station area. Officials said the aircraft belonged to the Pioneer Flying Club, one of the pilot training organisations operating from Dhanipur Airport. The incident occurred during a scheduled training exercise on Sunday morning, with reports placing the emergency landing between approximately 9:30 am and 11 am. The instructor pilot and trainee pilot safely exited the aircraft after the landing and did not suffer injuries. Both were later taken to a district hospital for routine medical examination. Eyewitnesses said panic spread among villagers after they saw the aircraft descending suddenly towards the ground. However, the plane landed safely in the field without causing any damage or injuries. Following the incident, local police, fire brigade personnel and district administration officials rushed to the spot. City Magistrate Atul Gupta and Airport Director Satyavrat also inspected the site. Authorities said the pilots managed to bring the aircraft down safely in the agricultural field without causing casualties or significant structural damage to the aircraft. The successful emergency handling prevented what officials described as a potentially serious accident. City Magistrate Atul Gupta confirmed that airport authorities were informed shortly after the incident and emergency response teams were dispatched to the site. Officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) subsequently initiated a probe into the technical malfunction and circumstances leading to the forced landing. Last year, a trainee pilot from Pioneer Flying Club crashed a solo-operated Diamond DA-40 trainer aircraft at Aligarh’s Dhanipur Airstrip after the aircraft reportedly skidded off the runway during landing and slammed into the airport boundary wall. The May 2025 incident occurred during a routine solo training sortie, with trainee pilot escaping unhurt despite the aircraft sustaining heavy damage to its nose and front landing gear. Also, in January 2022, a Cessna 172 aircraft from the same academy made an emergency landing in an agricultural field near Dhanipur airstrip during a night cross-country training session. Both the instructor and trainee pilot survived with minor injuries.

AAIB Flags Civil-Military ATC Coordination Lapses In Air India-Navy Helicopter Near Miss SEO DES: Investigators said poor ATC traffic assessment put both aircraft in conflict, forcing the Navy helicopter crew to take evasive action SOCIAL: India’s AAIB has released its final report into a serious February 2024 near-miss between an Air India A319 and an Indian Navy ALH helicopter near Port Blair airport. Investigators found that inadequate traffic assessment by ATC led both aircraft into conflicting airspace, forcing the helicopter crew to take evasive action after receiving a traffic warning. The report also flagged unnecessary cockpit radio conversations by the Air India crew and raised broader concerns over weak coordination between civil and military aviation authorities at joint-use airports. AAIB has recommended stronger civil-defence coordination, improved ATC procedures and installation of secondary surveillance radar at Port Blair. Image: Sean D Silva (Flickr) Video: Air India | Indian Navy Port Blair, India: India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has released its final investigation report into a serious midair proximity incident involving an Air India Airbus A319 and an Indian Navy Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Mk III near Port Blair airport, raising major safety concerns over coordination between civil and military aviation operations at joint-use aerodromes. The incident occurred on February 2, 2024, at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, a defence-operated airport that handles both military and civilian aircraft movements. The Air India aircraft, operating flight AI788 from Port Blair to Kolkata, came into close proximity with an Indian Navy ALH Mk III helicopter during departure operations, prompting an evasive manoeuvre by the helicopter crew to avoid a potential collision. According to the AAIB final report, the Air India Airbus A319, registered VT-SCV, had departed Runway 04 after receiving clearance from Air Traffic Control, while the Navy helicopter was simultaneously conducting a training sortie in the north-east local flying area. The helicopter crew had been carrying out a localiser approach procedure when the conflict developed between the two aircraft. Investigators stated that the approach controller allowed both aircraft to operate within conflicting airspace during a critical phase of flight, leading to rapidly reducing separation between the departing Airbus and the inbound helicopter. The helicopter subsequently received a Traffic Advisory warning from its onboard collision avoidance system, alerting the crew to the developing risk. The Navy pilots immediately initiated a sharp right turn to avoid crossing the Airbus’ climb path. Following the evasive manoeuvre, the helicopter discontinued its approach and safely recovered back at base, while the Air India aircraft continued its climb and proceeded normally toward Kolkata. The AAIB classified the occurrence as a “serious incident” and launched a full investigation under India’s Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules. In its findings, the bureau concluded that the probable cause of the incident was the “inadequate assessment of the traffic situation by the approach controller,” which resulted in reduced separation and dangerous proximity between the two aircraft. The investigation also identified communication-related concerns involving the Air India cockpit crew. According to the report, the Pilot-in-Command engaged in what investigators described as “undue conversation” with Air Traffic Control during a critical stage of flight, contributing to unnecessary radio frequency congestion. The AAIB recommended that Air India reinforce proper radio telephony discipline among its pilots. Apart from the immediate operational factors, the report highlighted broader systemic concerns regarding aviation safety coordination between civil and military authorities in India. The bureau noted that there is currently no formal framework for regular exchange of safety-related information between the AAIB, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Indian Navy, Indian Air Force and Indian Army, despite repeated recommendations issued after previous military aviation investigations. The report referenced earlier incidents involving aircraft VT-MPQ at Gwalior in 2021 and VT-PTE at Umari in 2023, where similar coordination gaps had already been identified. Investigators observed that several earlier safety recommendations remain pending implementation. To address the risks identified during the Port Blair incident investigation, the AAIB issued multiple safety recommendations. These include establishing a formal civil-defence aviation coordination mechanism, reviewing DGCA Civil Aviation Requirements involving military aircraft and defence aerodromes, improving Air Traffic Control coordination procedures at joint-use airports, strengthening radio communication discipline and installing a secondary surveillance radar system at Port Blair to support safer traffic management as aircraft movements continue increasing in the region. The bureau stressed that stronger integration between civilian and military aviation systems is becoming increasingly important as mixed-use airports handle higher traffic volumes and more complex operations.

Rome, Italy: Italy has signed a contract with Airbus Defence and Space for the acquisition of six A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft, marking a significant upgrade of its aerial refuelling and strategic airlift capabilities. The agreement, valued at approximately €1.4 billion ($1.624 billion USD), was formally concluded on 16 April 2026, according to European procurement records published through the EU’s official tender database. The programme also includes long-term support and logistics services that will extend across the aircraft’s operational lifecycle. The new Airbus A330 MRTT fleet will replace Italy’s existing Boeing KC-767A tanker aircraft, which have been in service since 2011. The decision follows several years of reassessment within the Italian Ministry of Defence regarding future tanker requirements. Italy had earlier explored the possibility of acquiring Boeing’s KC-46 Pegasus as a replacement platform, but the plan was later shelved, leading to a renewed competitive procurement process in which Airbus emerged as the selected provider. The A330 MRTT is based on the Airbus A330-200 commercial airframe and is widely regarded as one of the most capable multi-role tanker platforms in operational service. The aircraft is designed to perform air-to-air refuelling using both boom and hose-and-drogue systems, while also offering strategic transport, cargo movement, and aeromedical evacuation capabilities. With a range of approximately 16,000 kilometres, the aircraft significantly enhances long-range deployment capacity for both national and NATO operations. For Italy, the acquisition is expected to substantially strengthen support for its modern fighter fleet, including Eurofighter Typhoon and F-35 Lightning II aircraft. The new tankers will improve operational endurance, extend mission range, and enhance interoperability with allied air forces. Italy’s participation in NATO operations is also expected to be reinforced, as several alliance members already operate or are transitioning to the A330 MRTT platform, enabling shared training, logistics, and operational compatibility. The procurement also reflects a broader strategic and industrial shift toward European defence manufacturing. Italy’s previous tanker fleet, the Boeing KC-767A, represented a U.S.-origin platform, and early discussions had included potential acquisition of the KC-46 Pegasus. However, evolving operational assessments and procurement reviews ultimately led to a shift in favour of Airbus, strengthening Europe’s defence industrial base and reducing reliance on non-European suppliers for critical aerial refuelling capability. Deliveries of the six aircraft are expected to take place in phases over the coming years, with Airbus managing production and conversion activities through its established facilities in Spain. The programme is anticipated to span nearly a decade, including integration, testing, and full operational readiness. Industry reports also suggest that Airbus is expanding its MRTT conversion capacity to meet growing European and NATO demand for the platform. With this order, Italy joins a growing list of international operators of the Airbus 330 MRTT, a platform that has become central to NATO’s air-to-air refuelling strategy and multinational tanker interoperability initiatives. The aircraft’s widespread adoption across allied air forces reflects its role as a standardised solution for strategic air mobility and extended air operations.

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

Automation Rises, But Are Indian Pilots Being Trained To Keep Pace With The Future?

START: India is emerging as the fastest-growing aviation market worldwide, yet it faces a significant hurdle: a shortage of trained technical personnel, including pilots, engineers, and technicians. This challenge is expected to become more acute as Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles enter the market within the next year or two, creating an additional need for pilots. The issue stems largely from inadequate planning and foresight by the authorities. Consequently, many aspiring Indian pilots are pursuing training in countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bosnia, Montenegro, and the Philippines. In fact, approximately 700 out of every 1,000 commercial pilot licenses issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are earned abroad. India’s Potential as a Global Hub for Aviation Education Considering India’s expansive geography and favorable weather for flying, the country is ideally suited to be a global hub for aviation education. In the 1980s and 1990s, students from nations such as Iran, Jordan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and several African countries came to India for flight training. Today, the trend has reversed, with Indian students going overseas for pilot education. One key reason is the slow pace of domestic training programs and the cumbersome security clearance process for foreign students, which discourages them from enrolling in India. Competition from International Flight Schools Meanwhile, nations like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia have established world-class flight schools. Students from neighboring Arab countries now mostly prefer the United States, Canada, and Europe for training, despite these regions lacking ideal weather for primary flight instruction. Domestic regulations further complicate matters. The DGCA allows a flight school to operate only if it meets minimum requirements for aircraft and paid-up capital, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) imposes additional capital requirements. These rules do not guarantee quality education but are often sufficient to prevent many capable entrepreneurs from opening flight schools. By contrast, an Indian entrepreneur started a flight school in New Zealand with a single rented aircraft, which has since expanded to a fleet of over 20 planes and now attracts Indian students. Shortage of Trainer Aircraft The shortage of trainer aircraft is another pressing challenge. In the 1970s, Prof. David Hazen of Princeton University, invited by the Indian government to establish the first aeronautical department at IIT Kanpur, outlined a roadmap for India to achieve self-reliance in aviation training. However, progress has been slow. The DGCA developed the Swati light aircraft, manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), but a fatal accident during testing brought the program to an end. Similarly, the Hansa trainer created by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) was rejected by most flight schools. Lessons from the Pushpak Aircraft A comparison with the Pushpak aircraft is instructive. Manufactured in the 1950s, HAL produced 160 Pushpaks, which served India reliably for over 50 years and maintained an excellent safety record. In 1968, the government gifted one Pushpak each to Singapore and Malaysia to help them establish their flight training programs. The Pushpak’s success was largely due to it being modeled closely on the proven US Aeronca Chief. NAL later developed the next-generation Hansa (NG Hansa), which was showcased at the 2020 Wings India airshow, but production has yet to start, and setting up the necessary infrastructure would still take several years even if action begins immediately. Global Trainer Aircraft Shortages and LSAs The shortage of trainer aircraft is not unique to India. Major manufacturers such as Cessna and Piper had slowed production, underestimating demand, and now struggle to meet global requirements. Other countries have tackled this problem by incorporating Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs) into flight training. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, LSAs are cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and widely used in the US and EU for commercial pilot instruction. However, Indian regulations currently do not permit LSAs for commercial pilot training. Despite being equipped with only a magnetic compass, pilots trained on Pushpaks have gone on to fly advanced aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A320. Allowing LSAs in India could reduce aircraft shortages, encourage domestic manufacturing, generate employment, and attract foreign investment. Lack of Experienced Flight Instructors The lack of experienced flight instructors adds another layer of difficulty. Rapid growth in airlines such as Indigo and Air India has led many instructors to leave training schools for better pay, career progression, and recognition in commercial aviation. This high turnover leaves less-experienced instructors teaching students, unlike other professional fields where teachers usually have extensive industry experience. In countries like the US, airline pilots can provide primary flight training in their spare time, giving trainees the advantage of learning from seasoned professionals and ensuring higher safety standards. Without urgent, proactive measures, India will continue to rely on foreign nations to fulfill the increasing demand for skilled professionals in its civil aviation sector. https://www.hindustantimes.com/ht-insight/knowledge/flight-training-a-challenge-in-civil-aviation-101727069965710.html
