Toulouse, France: Qantas and Airbus are preparing for another major milestone in the airline's long-running Project Sunrise programme, with the first Airbus A350-1000 ULR scheduled to undertake a marathon nonstop certification flight from Toulouse, France, to Melbourne, Australia, later this month. If completed as planned, the journey is expected to last around 22 hours, making it one of the longest flights ever operated by an Airbus test aircraft. The aircraft assigned to the mission is Airbus A350-1000 ULR MSN 707, currently registered F-WULR. It is the first of 12 A350-1000 ULR aircraft ordered by Qantas for Project Sunrise and has been serving as the lead aircraft in Airbus' certification campaign since completing its maiden flight from Toulouse on June 2, 2026. During that first flight, the aircraft remained airborne for 3 hours and 43 minutes, climbed to just over 41,000 feet, and carried extensive flight-test instrumentation. The planned Toulouse–Melbourne sector will cover approximately 17,000 kilometres (about 10,560 miles) nonstop. Unlike a commercial service, the flight will be operated by Airbus' dedicated flight-test crew and engineers to validate the aircraft's performance, fuel consumption, systems and endurance under ultra-long-range operating conditions before certification is completed. Airbus has equipped MSN 707 with specialist flight-test equipment throughout the programme, and the aircraft will later be converted into its final passenger configuration for Qantas. Australian media reports indicate the aircraft is expected to arrive in Melbourne on July 24, subject to Airbus' final operational schedule. Following its arrival, the aircraft is expected to undergo additional evaluations before returning to Europe as Airbus completes the A350-1000 ULR certification campaign. While the arrival date has been widely reported, Airbus and Qantas have not formally announced the schedule. The A350-1000 ULR has been developed specifically for Qantas' Project Sunrise, enabling nonstop flights from Australia's east coast to destinations previously beyond the reach of commercial airliners. Airbus says the aircraft is capable of flying nearly 10,000 nautical miles with flight times of up to 22 hours, allowing direct services from Sydney to London and Sydney to New York. To achieve the additional range, Airbus has incorporated a new 20,000-litre rear centre fuel tank, structural enhancements and revised fuel system architecture unique to the ultra-long-range variant. The aircraft is also fitted with a higher maximum take-off weight and other modifications designed to support the world's longest commercial passenger flights. Qantas ordered 12 A350-1000ULRs in May 2022 as the centrepiece of Project Sunrise. The airline's first production aircraft, named Vega, is scheduled for delivery in April 2027, with the inaugural non-stop Sydney–London service planned for October 2027. A nonstop Sydney–New York service is expected to follow. The customised aircraft will carry 238 passengers, significantly fewer than a standard A350-1000, to maximise range and passenger comfort. The cabin will feature 6 First Suites, 52 Business Suites, 40 Premium Economy seats and 140 Economy seats, along with a dedicated Wellbeing Zone where passengers can stretch, hydrate and move around during flights lasting up to 22 hours. Once Airbus completes certification, MSN 707 will be retrofitted with Qantas' final cabin interior before entering commercial service. The remaining aircraft in the 12-aircraft fleet will be delivered progressively, enabling Qantas to expand its ultra-long-haul network and redefine nonstop travel between Australia and major global destinations.

New Delhi, India: The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a penalty of ₹1 lakh (US$1,160) on SpiceJet Limited for using deceptive digital design practices, commonly known as dark patterns, on its flight booking platform. The authority concluded that the airline's booking interface violated consumer protection laws by enrolling users into services and obtaining marketing consent without their explicit approval. The order was issued by the CCPA, headed by Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare and Commissioner Anupam Mishra, following an examination of the airline's online booking process. According to the authority, SpiceJet's practices breached provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, Rule 4(9) of the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, and the Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, 2023. The CCPA found that consumers booking flights on SpiceJet's platform were automatically enrolled into the SpiceClub Loyalty Programme through a pre-ticked checkbox, without actively opting into the service. It also observed that customers were treated as having agreed to receive promotional communications because the default option for marketing messages had already been selected, requiring no affirmative action from users. According to the authority, even after it issued a notice to the airline, SpiceJet modified the booking interface by replacing the original mechanism with another pre-ticked checkbox for receiving future promotional messages through text messages, WhatsApp and email. The CCPA held that this effectively continued the same practice in a different form rather than eliminating the issue. During the proceedings, SpiceJet stated that the issue had occurred because of a technical error. The airline was subsequently directed to provide an undertaking confirming that the required corrective measures had been implemented and would remain in place permanently. In its order, the CCPA identified multiple categories of prohibited dark patterns on the airline's booking platform. It said the automatic enrolment into the SpiceClub Loyalty Programme through a pre-selected checkbox amounted to "Forced Action." It further held that presenting the company's preferred option as the default selection constituted "Interface Interference", as it influenced consumer decision-making. The authority also found that the use of confusing and negatively worded consent language had the potential to mislead users, classifying it as a "Trick Question." The authority stated that "such practices impair consumer autonomy, undermine informed decision-making and are inconsistent with the principles of fair and transparent consumer engagement." The CCPA further concluded that SpiceJet's conduct amounted to unfair trade practices, unfair contracts and misleading representations under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. It also ruled that the airline had violated Rule 4(9) of the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, which requires consumer consent to be obtained only through explicit and affirmative action, as well as the Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, 2023. Reiterating the legal standard for obtaining consumer consent, the order states that "consumer consent must always be explicit, informed and freely given. Consent obtained through pre-ticked checkboxes, default settings or deceptive interface design is not valid and is contrary to consumer welfare and the provisions of law." The authority also reaffirmed its regulatory approach towards digital commerce, stating that "CCPA remains committed to protecting consumer rights and ensuring that digital platforms conduct business in a fair, transparent and consumer-centric manner." The action against SpiceJet forms part of the CCPA's ongoing efforts to curb deceptive online practices following the introduction of the Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, 2023, which prohibit interface designs that manipulate or mislead consumers into making unintended choices. SpiceJet maintained during the proceedings that the issue resulted from a technical error. However, the CCPA proceeded with the penalty and directed the airline to ensure that the corrective measures are implemented on a permanent basis.

India’s CCPA Penalises SpiceJet US$1,140 For Dark Patterns In Flight Booking Process

New Jersey, United States: The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released its preliminary report into the fatal April 10, 2025 crash of a Bell 206L-4 helicopter (registration N216MH) that broke apart in flight before plunging into the Hudson River near Jersey City, New Jersey, killing all six people on board. The report, published by the NTSB on July 16, 2026, provides investigators' first official reconstruction of the accident while emphasizing that the findings are preliminary and subject to change. The accident involved a Part 91 aerial observation (air tour) flight that departed Downtown Manhattan/Wall Street Heliport (JRB) at about 2:58 p.m. EDT. The helicopter was destroyed, the pilot and five passengers were fatally injured, and investigators continue examining recovered wreckage to determine the cause of the in-flight breakup. According to the preliminary report, ADS-B flight tracking data showed the helicopter initially flew south of the Statue of Liberty in a teardrop pattern before proceeding north along Manhattan's east side of the Hudson River. It continued past the George Washington Bridge, performed a U-turn, and then headed south along the New Jersey side of the river toward Jersey City. During the helicopter's final minute of flight, it approached the Holland Tunnel ventilation towers near Jersey City while flying between 625 and 650 feet above mean sea level. Investigators said the aircraft briefly climbed to 675 feet before entering a rapid descent. ADS-B data ended at 3:14:54.5 p.m., with the helicopter's final recorded altitude at 125 feet. The report states that multiple witnesses heard several loud "bangs" before seeing the helicopter break apart. Investigators also reviewed surveillance video, which captured the aircraft flying south before it suddenly separated into three major sections: the fuselage, including the engine; the main rotor system, including both rotor blades, transmission and roof-beam structure; and the tail boom with the tail rotor. The helicopter then descended uncontrollably into the Hudson River. The Smithsonian Institution's Feather Identification Laboratory determined that a mixed flock of Brant and Canada geese struck the helicopter's rotor blades and rear section. Investigators also found that a Great Black-backed Gull was struck by debris from the helicopter's tail assembly with enough force to severely damage the bird, causing one of its wings to separate before landing on a rooftop alongside other wreckage. According to the laboratory's report, which forms part of the NTSB's investigation docket, specialists identified the bird remains through comparisons with preserved feather specimens, microscopic examination of distinctive feather characteristics, and DNA analysis. The six victims included the pilot and a family of five from Spain, two parents, both employed by Siemens, and their three children. Investigators documented where the wreckage came to rest. The fuselage was found inverted in approximately 6 feet of water north of the Holland Tunnel ventilation towers. The separated main rotor assembly and tail boom were recovered farther north in approximately 30 feet of water. Additional debris was located floating on the river and on the rooftop of a transit building in Hoboken, New Jersey. The NTSB reported that the Bell 206L-4 was not equipped with onboard video or flight-data recording devices. However, photographs taken before departure showed the pilot wearing computer-augmented smart glasses capable of recording video and audio. Those glasses were not recovered, meaning investigators were unable to obtain any potential recordings from them. The pilot held a commercial pilot certificate with rotorcraft-helicopter and instrument helicopter ratings and possessed a current FAA first-class medical certificate. Records showed he had accumulated 790.2 total flight hours, including 48.6 hours in the Bell 206L-4. The report noted that he had returned to work after 10 days off under a 10-days-on/10-days-off schedule. The accident flight was the eighth sightseeing flight operated by the same pilot that day. Maintenance records reviewed by investigators indicated the helicopter most recently underwent an Event 2 progressive 300-hour inspection and a 100-hour inspection on February 27, 2025. At that inspection, the airframe had accumulated 12,975 hours, while the engine had logged 23,305 hours. By the time of the accident, the helicopter had flown approximately 50 additional hours since that maintenance event. Weather was not considered adverse at the time of the accident. Conditions at Downtown Manhattan Heliport included 10 miles visibility, broken clouds at 7,500 feet, and winds from 150 degrees at 10 knots, gusting to 18 knots, although a peak gust of 36 knots had been recorded about 30 minutes earlier. The flight was conducted under visual meteorological conditions (VMC) without a filed flight plan. The NTSB said the wreckage has been recovered and retained for additional examination as investigators continue to determine what caused the helicopter to break apart in flight. The preliminary report does not identify a probable cause, stressing that the investigation remains ongoing and that the information is subject to revision as further evidence is analyzed. The investigation is being led by Investigator-in-Charge Leah Read with participation from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Bell Helicopter, Rolls-Royce, and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. The NTSB also confirmed that its investigators traveled to the accident scene. The NTSB's investigation docket, comprising more than 2,000 pages of factual material, does not identify the cause of the accident. China Eastern Airlines has forecast a loss of RMB 3.5 billion to RMB 4 billion, while China Southern Airlines expects a loss between RMB 2.7 billion and RMB 3.3 billion. The losses mark a significant reversal from the first quarter. China Southern reported a first-quarter net profit of RMB 1.48 billion ($216 million), recovering from a RMB 747 million loss in the same period last year. Fuel costs emerged as the biggest pressure point for the carriers. Jet fuel remains the largest operating expense for airlines, typically accounting for around 30%-35% of total operating costs. May fuel prices were reported to be twice the level recorded during the same period in 2025. The Middle East conflict that began in March triggered a rapid increase in oil prices. Industry executives highlighted fuel exposure as the primary impact on airline operations, with fuel prices in March reportedly rising sharply compared with January and February levels. Unlike many international carriers that use extensive fuel-hedging strategies to protect against price volatility, Chinese airlines hedge only a limited portion of their fuel consumption. The impact has also been amplified by weaker passenger demand. Analysts noted that China’s slowing economic growth, adverse weather conditions and increasing competition from high-speed rail have affected domestic air travel demand. Domestic travel demand reportedly declined 6.2% in May, marking one of the weakest performances among major aviation markets. The difficult environment has also affected expectations for the summer travel season. July and August passenger numbers are projected to decline 3.6% year on year, while average daily flights and economy-class fares are expected to remain under pressure.

Akasa plans to raise approximately ₹800 crore (US$84 million) through equity and at least ₹250 crore (US$26 million) through debt. The airline has approached both its existing shareholders and two new investors for the equity portion, while simultaneously holding discussions with state-run banks to secure debt financing under the Indian government's special credit line introduced to support airlines affected by the Iran conflict. "There could be up to 69 track-mounted passenger seat assemblies on each 737 MAX plane," according to details cited in the FAA proposal. The FAA estimates the total inspection cost for U.S. operators at up to $2.66 million, while Boeing has indicated that some or all costs associated with the proposed AD may be covered under warranty.
